ANOTHER set of defibrillators will be on hand for emergencies in the Wantage and Grove area in the New Year. Wantage charity champion Wa Ray Collins has donated the money for a mobile set of the mone shockers – which will be in the shoc back b k of a neighbourhood police vehicle. Two sets of the devices, which cost just shy of £1,000, were installed earlier this year in Waitrose and the Bear Inn. “It’s a massive thing for someone who needs it,” said Mr Collins. “When they came to me and asked, I was more than happy to help out, because it’s a vital, life-saving piece of equipment, and you feel obliged to do all you can. “You kind of hope they never get used, but if they do get used and they save one life then

money doesn’t come into it. They’re there if needed.” A defibrillator gives the heart a controlled electrical shock if a person goes into cardiac arrest. Installing the defibrillators has been the brainchild of Wantage and Grove PCSO Sue Harris. “I’ve always had particular interest in fi rst aid, when I’ve done the training,” she said. “And unfortunately there’s been a couple of people who I have dealt with who had heart attacks in town. “So I thought the town needed them. “It keeps getting driven home to us how important it is to get one through to someone really quickly. “So the nearer you have them, Like us on the better chance you have in saving their life. “They’re there, and if peofacebook.com/OxfordshireGuardian

ple do need them, please use them.” PCSO Harris added that people do not need to be trained to use the equipment, as it is installed with the facility that talks you through the procedure. Waitrose donated most of the money for their set, with the rest made up by Wantage and Grove Volunteers. Staff in the shop in Wallingford Street have all been trained and briefed by St John’s ambulance on how to cope in an emergency situation. And the defibrillators at the Bear Inn, on the Market Place, was entirely funded by charity Unicorn. PCSO Harris added: “It has been a pleasure to work with Waitrose, Unicorn, Wantage and Grove Volunteers and Ray Collins to raise enough money for the defibrillators.” A separate set of defibrillators were installed earlier this year in East Hanney, after a fundraising drive by villagers.
