THE PERSISTENCE OF THE PALESTINIAN QUESTION ESSAYS ON ZIONISM AND THE PALESTINIANS Joseph A. Massad, Columbia University, USA ‘Massad is no practitioner of political correctness and one may not agree with everything he says. But his critique of Zionist ideology and practise is thoroughly researched, powerfully argued and often brilliantly insightful.’ - Walid Khalidi, formerly of Harvard University, USA ‘Joseph Massad’s The Persistence of the Palestinian Question insightfully probes contemporary politics within a broader historical framework. Looking into the contradictions around and within Palestine, the essays illuminate the complex shaping of the diverse and even conflicting Palestinian positions. This timely and engaging volume makes an invaluable contribution to the ongoing debate over Zionism and Palestine.’ - Ella Shohat, New York University, USA ‘This is a thought provoking book that forces us to reverse our conventional images and perceptions about Palestine’s history and future. This is a courageous intellectual exercise, long needed, in an often overburdened and repetitive field of inquiry.’ - Ilan Pappé, University of Haifa, Israel In this erudite and ground-breaking series of essays, renowned author Joseph Massad asks and answers key questions, such as, What has been the main achievement of the Zionist movement? What accounts for the failure of the Palestinian National Movement to win its struggle against Israel? What do anti-Semitism, colonialism and racism have to do with the Palestinian/Israeli ‘conflict’? Joseph Massad offers a radical departure from mainstream analysis in order to expose the causes for the persistence of the ‘Palestinian Question’. He proposes that it is not in de-linking the Palestinian Question from the Jewish Question that a resolution can be found, but by linking them as one and the same question. All other proposed solutions, the author argues, are bound to fail. Deeply researched and documented, this book analyzes the failure of the ‘peace process’ and proposes that a solution to the Palestinian Question will not be found unless settler-colonialism, racism, and anti-Semitism are abandoned as the ideological framework for a resolution. Individual essays further explore the struggle over Jewish identity in Israel and the struggle among Palestinians over what constitutes the Palestinian Question today. ROUTLEDGE STUDIES IN MIDDLE EASTERN POLITICS NEW PALESTINIAN REFUGEE REPATRIATION GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES Edited by Michael Dumper, University of Exeter, UK The repatriation of Palestinians is a highly topical issue, and a critical component of any future peace process for Israel/Palestine. Until now, the mechanics of repatriation have not been dealt with in detail. This book explores the notion that the Palestinian refugee case is exceptional through the comparative study of refugee repatriation, and asks:

NEW THE INTERNATIONAL POLITICS OF THE PERSIAN GULF A CULTURAL GENEALOGY Arshin Adib-Moghaddam, University of Cambridge, UK Adib-Moghaddam examines the causes and consequences of conflict in one of the most important regions of the world. Bridging the gap between critical theories of international relations and the empirical study of the Gulf area, this book expands on the many ideologies, cultural inventions and ideational constructs that have affected relations in the past three decades. Key issues explored include: • the rise and fall of Arab and Persian nationalism • the international repercussions of the Islamic revolution in Iran • the events surrounding the three Gulf Wars • the ‘mindset’ of terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda

• To what extent can the Palestinian case be said to be unique?

• why US neo-conservatism is threatening regional order.

• Where are the divergences, the overlaps and points of similarity with other refugee situations?

Provocatively written, persuasively researched and conclusively argued, The International Politics of the Persian Gulf presents the first comprehensive analysis of international relations in the Gulf from an explicitly multidisciplinary perspective.

• What lessons can be drawn from these comparisons? • How can these lessons inform refugee organizations, the donor community and policy-makers? Select Contents: 1. FORTHCOMING GLOBALIZATION AND THE GULF

NEW IN PAPERBACK

IRAN ENCOUNTERING GLOBALIZATION PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS Edited by Ali Mohammadi, Nottingham Trent University, UK ‘This study effectively highlights how the tensions between international globalisation and Islamisation have grown.’ - Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law

Edited by John W. Fox, American University of Sharjah, UAE, Nada Mourtada-Sabbah, American University of Sharjah, UAE and Mohammed Al Mutawa, United Arab Emirates University, UAE

With new material and up-to-date information, this book examines the current state of Iran, exploring a wide range of areas including the economy, finance, politics, the media, and the position of women and migration.

For centuries, the Arabian Gulf has been a crossroads where seafaring people and Bedouins alike travelled great distances transacting business. Events of the past few years, both good and bad, have directed the world’s attention to the Arabian Peninsula, where a rich cultural tradition is rapidly incorporating the latest innovations from around the world. This is the process of globalization.

Iran Encountering Globalization discusses the uneasy balance between the theocratic conservatism, modernization and globalization. This is a key tension in Iran - one which has arisen following the revolution of 1979, since the regime has worked to Islamicize the country, while at the same time international globalization forces have been pulling in a different direction. Concluding that forces for change in Iran are currently building up, this is an extremely topical book that makes an important contribution to current debates surrounding democracy in Iran.

New economies create enormous potential, but it will require great care for the people of the region to steer through a period of profound change. Political and economic interests intent on maintaining the flow of petroleum products on one hand, and people in the Gulf region who assess their won interests from quite a different perspective, on the other, exert pressures from conflicting directions. Reconciling these interests in a time of rapid globalization poses enormous challenges.

Brought together by the American University of Sharjah and the Sociological Association of the UAE, the contributors reflect on both the process of globalism and on the traditions of Gulf society and culture, and they offer views on how these trends interact within the global system.

Cohen and Jaid, trace the development of contemporary Morocco in the Islamic world of North Africa, which is currently at the forefront of the clash between Western-style development and the politicized Islam that now pervades the Arab world. By applying globalization theory to detailed accounts of everyday life in an Arab society, the book is uniquely suited to students. Morocco in particular is a good place to look at this extremely important confrontation. It is among the most liberalized Islamic states, yet it is also in the midst of a revival of politicized Islam, which has its own globalizing agenda. The authors detail how this clash pervades Moroccan culture and society, and what it can tell us about the effects of globalization on the Arab world. Morocco is extremely close to the West in terms of physical proximity, and it is a favoured spot for Western tourists. Yet its closest neighbours in social terms are Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia, all of which have directly experienced the effects of politicized Islam in the quarter century.

A NET ASSESSMENT

This IISS ‘Strategic Dossier’ on Iran’s weapons programmes provides an objective technical assessment of Iran’s nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons capabilities, as well as its ballistic missile programme. The dossier evaluates what is known and what is not known about these capabilities and projects potential future developments. In addition, the dossier provides a history of democratic efforts over the last three decades, to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability and examines different options for current diplomatic efforts. Each chapter has been written and reviewed by recognized international experts in their respective fields. The IISS does not advocate any particular policy option for dealing with the Iranian nuclear issue. The objective of Iran’s Strategic Weapons Programmes: is to assess, as accurately and dispassionately as possible, Iran’s capabilities and evaluate the pros and cons of different policy options in order to foster a well-informed policy debate. NEW LIBYA AND NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION STEPPING BACK FROM THE BRINK Wyn Q. Bowen, Defence Studies Department, King’s College London, UK Series: Adelphi Papers

This Adelphi Paper examines the motives behind Libya’s pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability, from Gadhafi’s rise to power in 1969 through to the end of 2003. It also assesses the proliferation pathways that the regime followed during this period, including early dependence on Soviet technology and assistance, subsequently relying on technological infusions from the A.Q. Khan network. Wyn Q. Bowen clearly analyzes the decision to give up the quest for nuclear weapons, focusing on the main factors that influenced the Gadhafi regime’s calculations, including the perceived need to re-engage, both politically and economically, with the international community, particularly the United States. It explores the process of dismantling the nuclear programme and the question of whether Libya constitutes a ‘model’ for addressing the challenges posed by other proliferators. May 2006: 234x156: 144pp Pb: 0-415-41238-2 ISBN 13 978-0-415-41238-4: £14.99

IRAQ’S FUTURE THE AFTERMATH OF REGIME CHANGE Toby Dodge, Queen Mary College, UK Series: Adelphi Papers

It is hard to over estimate what is at stake in Iraq today. The removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime in April 2003 has proved to be the beginning, not the culmination, of a long and very uncertain process of state-building. This Adelphi Paper examines this process from a military, political and sociological perspective. Possible futures for Iraq are charted, first by studying the evolution of the criminal and politically-motivated violence that has come to dominate the everyday lives of ordinary Iraqis. The paper then details the strengths and weaknesses of the political structures built after the fall of Saddam’s regime, from the formation of the Iraqi Governing Council in 2004 to the elections of January 2005, and traces the forces driving political mobilization in post-Saddam Iraq. It concludes by analyzing the ramifications of regime change for US policy and the wider Middle East.

Andrew Mango, Formerly BBC World Service, author and consultant on modern Turkey Since the 1970s, Turkey has suffered 35,000 deaths through terrorism, yet the PKK terror group was only recognized as such by the European Union in 2002. The realization that terrorism poses a worldwide threat is now forcing a keen reassessment of the struggle which Turkey has had to wage with terror for over thirty years while the world looked on. Terror is clearly now a key part of the international agenda and this authoritative account details and establishes the Turkish experience. This chronological account of terrorist attacks inside Turkey and against Turkish targets outside the country, places them in the global setting. This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of international relations, terrorism and security studies. Select Contents: 1. Terror Declares War on Turkey 2. INTERNATIONAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS

Christopher Kinsey, Defence Studies Department, King’s College London

Edited by Sten Rynning, Department of Political Science, University of Southern Denmark and Bertel Heurlin, Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen

This book examines the controversial role of private security companies (PSCs) in the reconstruction of Iraq.

US missile defence policy plays a crucial part on the international scene and is typically studied from US perspectives. This book is different. It delivers sharp analyses of regional and national variations and integrates them with US viewpoints. This book shows that the global ramifications of US missile defence policy are contingent upon distinct regional and national variations. Select Contents: Introduction 1. FORTHCOMING ISLAMIC LIBERATION THEOLOGY RESISTING THE EMPIRE Hamid Dabashi This book is a radical piece of counter-intuitive thinking on the clash of civilizations theory and global politics. The author argues that after 9/11 we have not seen a new phase in a long running confrontation between Islam and the West, but that such catergories have collapsed. The West is no longer a unified actor and Islam is ideologically exhausted in its confontation with colonialism. Rather we are seeing the emergence of the US as a lone superpower, and a confrontation between a form of imperial globalized capital and a new Islamic theodicy.
