2ND EDITION
Sport: A Wider Social Role?
Sports Development
Who’s Keeping the Score?
Policy, Process and Practice
Fred Coalter, Stirling University, UK
Edited by Kevin Hylton and Peter Bramham, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK
sport.
Sport is perceived to have the potential to alleviate a variety of social problems and generally to improve both individuals and the communities in which they live. Sport is promoted as a relatively cost effective antidote to a range of social problems ñ often those stemming from social exclusion - including poor health, high crime levels, drug abuse and persistent youth offending, educational under-achievement, lack of social cohesion and community identity and economic decline. To this end, there is increasing governmental interest in what has become known as sport for good.
Now in its second edition, Sports Development has been updated to include contemporary debates about mass participation, community sports development, social inclusion, coaching and talent development, PE and school sport, working and volunteering in sports development, elite performance and the Olympic Games, research and policy evaluation.
Sport: A Wider Social Role? presents the political and historical context for this increased government interest in sports potential contribution to a range of social problems. The book explores the particular social problems that governments seek to address through sport, and examines the nature and extent of the evidence for sports positive role.
Sports Development represents an invaluable resource for university and further education students, researchers and those working in sports development and should be essential reading for all those wanting to prove themselves effective in this area.
The book illustrates that, in an era of evidence-based policy-making, the cumulative evidence base for many claims for sport is relatively weak, in part because research into the precise contribution of sport faces substantial methodological problems. Drawing on worldwide research, the book explores the current state of knowledge and understanding of the presumed impacts of sport and suggests that we need to adopt a different approach to research and evaluation if sports researchers are to develop their understanding and make a substantial contribution to sports policy.
Sports Development provides a detailed, authoritative and dependable guide to all aspects of the subject. This popular course text examines the roles of those working in and around sports development and explores how professionals can devise better and more effective ways of promoting interest, participation or performance in

Australian Sport - Better by Design?
A Critique of High-Performance Sport
The Evolution of Australian Sport Policy
Rob Beamish, Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada and Ian Ritchie, Brock University, Ontario, Canada
Bob Stewart, Matthew Nicholson, Aaron Smith and Hans Westerbeek
Series: Routledge Critical Studies in Sport A critical exploration of the use of drugs and other performance-enhancing practices in sport, tracing the development of the situation today through its socio-political history. The authors draw together research from around the world to present a challenging and rigorous critique of the use of athletes as representatives of political regimes, and the constant striving for medals that has altered the ethos of the Olympic Games from its earnest beginnings to the multi-million pound multi-media extravaganza seen today. Broadening the debate about drugs to include the systemic use of performance-enhancing techniques, this book offers a refreshing and controversial perspective on the modern Olympics, and its straightforward style will appeal to under- and post-graduate students as well as scholars of sports ethics and history, policy makers and anyone interested in the changing nature of sport. 2006: 234x156: 208pp eBook: 0-203-96785-2 ISBN13: 978-0-203-96785-0 Hb: 0-415-77042-4 ISBN13: 978-0-415-77042-2: £75.00 Pb: 0-415-77043-2 ISBN13: 978-0-415-77043-9: £22.99
’Given Australia’s prominence as a global sporting success story and the lack of specific policy-related material that maps out the evolution of federal government involvement in this story, the book should appeal to academics, undergraduate students, policymakers and sport development practitioners.’ - Mick Green, European Sport Management Quarterly

Sport in the Australian Culture Revisited Saturday Afternoon Fever II Edited by Brian Stoddart, La Trobe University, Australia Series: Sport in the Global Society Twenty years ago, Saturday Afternoon Fever told us the story of the central place that sport can hold in both a personal and a national identity. Since the 1980s, however, much has changed, and this special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport re-examines the position of sport in the hearts and minds of Australians, comparing the cultural history and analysis that emerged from the original classic text with the subsequent developments that have at once transformed Australian sport and established certain unchangeable qualities within it.

An Introduction
Elite Sport Development addresses important sport policy questions in this unique text that explores the emergence, development and current status of elite sport development policy with detailed examination of Australia, Canada and the UK in swimming, track and field athletics, and sailing. The book looks at the problems faced in establishing an elite sport development infrastructure covering facilities, coaching, sports science and competition. Likewise, full-time athletes are considered and the tensions that a pre-occupation with elite achievement generates within the sports is also examined. Topics covered Include: •why governments invest heavily in elite sport •the relationship between Government and NGB’s •the impact of elite investment on ’sport for all’ •the selection of individual sports for priority funding. This detailed text will be of interest to students, researchers and professionals working in sports development and policy.
Nigel Thomas and Andrew Smith, Chester University, UK This book fills a need for a critical examination of disability sport, in the context of growing media coverage and academic interest. Providing a sound introduction to the central issues and exploring the complexities involved in an inclusive approach to disability sport, this text brings together perspectives from sociology, philosophy of sport, and politics as well as considering the complex relationships between them. Outlining and questioning key concepts, theories and terms, this book ultimately concludes that if we are to understand and explain how disability sport operates, we must develop a more detached analysis of its role. Selected Contents: Introduction 1. Key Concepts and Theories in Disability Sport 2. Sport Policy and Disability Policy: The Making of Disability Sport Policy 3. Series: Routledge Critical Studies in Sport As the Paralympic Games mirrors the development of the mainstream Olympics and now constitutes a commercially successful sporting festival, this book questions the Games’ development as a positive one and whether or not it is justified to describe the Games as a vehicle for empowerment of the disabled community. Using cutting-edge ethnographic research methods, David Howe investigates the economic, social and political processes shaping the Paralympic movement on a local and global scale, and develops a new theory of the relationship between sport, the body and the culture of disability. This book also addresses a range of topics that are central to the study of contemporary sport in general, such as the use of technology, commercialism and professionalization, the international politics of sport, and the use and abuse of power. By critiquing contemporary attitudes to disability within sport and within society more generally, and by challenging the orthodox view of the Paralympics as a vehicle for empowerment, this book raises important questions and debates crucial to the study of sociology and sports studies. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Investigating Disability in a Sporting Context: Conceptual Considerations 3. Social History of Disabled Sport 4. Positive Youth Development Through Sport
Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport
Edited by Nicholas L. Holt, University of Alberta, Canada Series: International Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport This book brings together high profile contributors from diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways in which sport can be and has been used to promote youth development. Young people are too frequently looked upon as problems waiting to be solved. From the perspective of Positive Youth Development (PYD), young people are understood to embody potential, awaiting development. Involvement with sport provides a developmental context that has been associated with PYD, but negative outcomes can also arise from sport participation and school PE. Sport itself does not lead to PYD; rather, it is the manner in which sport is structured and delivered to children that influences their development. Selected Contents: Introduction 1. Positive Youth Development 2. Positive Psychosocial Development Through Sport 3. Toward an Integrated Model of Positive Youth Development Through Sport 4. Sport and Responsibility with Inner-City Youth 5. Factors Associated with Children’s Positive and Negative Experiences in Sport 6.Teaching Life Skills Through Sport 7. Sport in Education 8. Sport for Peace 9. Research Issues for PYD through Sport August 2007: 234x156: 152pp eBook: 0-203-94478-X ISBN13: 978-0-203-94478-3 Hb: 0-415-77152-8 ISBN13: 978-0-415-77152-8: £75.00
Edited by Ian Wellard, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK Series: International Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport Much writing on gender and sport is focused upon the negative impact of girls’ exclusion from the arena, suggesting by inference that current practice in sport and physical education offers an uncomplicatedly positive sport experience for boys, and that gender, in and of itself, offers a simple starting point for research into young people’s experience of sport. Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport seeks to articulate certain themes which, it is suggested, might contribute to broadening and furthering discussion in the area of gender, youth sport and physical activity. This collection considers a number of themes relating to gender in sport, including: •the body •competence, ability and school physical education •cultural change and diversity •gendered spaces •human rights and well-being. Authoritative writers have contributed thought provoking chapters which will prompt the reader to re-think the ways in which gender is understood within the context of youth sport.

With advances in cable, digital and online technology in recent years we have seen unprecedented changes to the regulations, demand for and value of sports broadcasting. Ever-greater budgets and sponsorship deals continue to raise the stakes. It is the broadcasting machine that has been the force behind the expansion in value of the sports industry, and understanding the economics of sports broadcasting is now central to understanding today’s sporting world. This book will be central to the development of this understanding.
Sports sponsorship has exploded in value over the last decades, and is now a multimillion pound industry. This text provides a must have, detailed guide to the successful management of sports sponsorship. It explores the development of a sponsorship strategy as well as the practical implementation of sponsorship operations including targeting and negotiating with sponsors, signing a deal, and providing a quality service to sponsors. Illustrated throughout with sport specific case studies, this Routledge Handbook of Sports Sponsorship presents a wide range of perspectives on sports sponsorship including that of the sports organization, the event manager, the athlete and the commercial sponsor. TEXTBOOK
The Role of Sport in Economic and Social Regeneration
Physical Activity and Health
Edited by Chris Gratton and Ian Henry
Adrianne Hardman and David Stensel
Sport has become a major industry as well as a major cultural preoccupation in the contemporary world. Cities are increasingly using major sporting events and activities to re-image themselves, promote urban development and fund economic growth and regeneration. Including casestudies from the Sydney Olympics to urban school sports, Sport in the City looks closely at how sport has been used in contemporary cities across the world, and evaluates policies, strategies and management. Five key areas are examined: •sport and urban economic regeneration •sports events: bidding •planning and organization
The Evidence Explained This textbook deals exclusively with the benefits of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of various health conditions which are of growing concern worldwide. In each chapter the authors describe the cause of the conditions and then discuss the role of physical activity in its prevention or improvement, drawing on research literature to help students evaluate the quality and extent of this. Hazards and benefits of exercise are discussed with critical appraisal of current recommendations for physical activity. The emphasis throughout is on topics relating to major health issues in western societies - cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, the insulin resistance syndrome, osteoporosis - as well as including new and developing research areas. Designed to be user-friendly, this book includes:
•urban sports tourism • sport and urban community development
•chapter overviews and summaries plus information boxes
•urban politics and sports policy.
•study activities and tasks for self evaluation
Sport in the City represents an essential resource for urban policy makers and the sports policy community. It is invaluable reading for sports studies students and urban geographers.
•suggested further reading including landmark papers

The Politics of Sports Development
Kevin Hylton Challenging dominant orthodoxies and providing an accessible, cohesive framework for debates often shifted to the periphery of undergraduate teaching because of their sensitivity, the book opens critical race theory to a wide readership of students and researchers, offering a genuinely cutting edge review of this field. Race and Sport includes: •analysis of the tensions inherent in popular key terms in ’race’ theory
Development of Sport or Development Through Sport?
•the question of ’Whiteness’ and the perpetuation of a hegemony of white privilege in sport
Barrie Houlihan and Anita White ’Essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of sport, sports development and leisure policy.’ - The British Journal of Teaching Physical Education
This text traces the evolution of sports development in the UK in the context of broader shifts in sport and social policy. It explores the emergence of sports development from the early years of public policy for sport in the 1960s to the contemporary era. This analysis is set against a background of policy initiatives, from ’Sport For All’, ’Action Sport’ and CCT, to the National Lottery and the contemporary emphasis on sport as a factor in the social and cultural well-being of the nation. Incorporating original material from major case studies and the national governing bodies of hockey, rowing, rugby union and tennis, the book examines the reality of ’doing sports development’ within this changing social and political policy climate.
•the power of the media in the construction of racialized identities •challenge to the assumptions underpinning popular approaches to antiracism. Developing the debate throughout the field Critical Race Theory in Sport breaks down concepts including ’race’, ethnicity, social Darwinism, social constructionism, racialisation, universalism, genetics and scientific racism, identity and citizenship, social capital, equality. Each of these concepts presents a challenge for academics, policy makers and practitioners in the way they approach the development of their ideas, policies and practical interventions. Blowing the Whistle Culture, Politics and Sport, Revisited
Transnational and Comparative Research in Sport
Garry Whannel, Luton University, UK
Globalisation, Governance and Sport Policy
Series: Routledge Critical Studies in Sport
Ian Henry, Loughborough University, UK and Institute Of Sport and Leisure Policy
’Whannel is a foundational figure in the study of sports and the media. For twenty years his writing has set a high standard and it remains an inspiration to many’ - Toby Miller, Professor of Cultural Studies, New York University, USA
Garry Whannel’s text Blowing the Whistle: The Politics of Sport broke new ground when it was first published in 1983. Its polemical discussion brought sports as cultural politics into the academic arena and set the agenda for a new wave of researchers. Since the 1980’s sport studies has matured both as an academic discipline and as a focus for mainstream political and public policy debate. In Blowing the Whistle: Culture, Politics and Sport, Revisited, Whannel revisits the themes that led his first edition, assessing their 1980’s context from our new millennium perspective, and exploring their continued relevance for contemporary sports academics. This revisited volume will appeal to undergraduate students and researchers in sports and cultural studies and sociology. In recent years there has been a growing recognition that comparative and transnational research has been weighed down by theoretical and methodological constraints. These include the wider adoption of a postmodern understanding of truth and knowledge, an acceptance of the prevalence of Orientalism inherent in much Western research and the diminished significance of the ’local’ within the rhetoric of globalization. Transnational and Comparative Research in Sport addresses these difficulties in the context of sport studies, with the aim of developing a series of typologies which can be adopted to help establish meaningful transnational and comparative research. The book covers theoretical and substantive contexts and introduces four typologies for comparative research, each supported by case studies and full discussion.
