01 blue charette
2
CHARETTE The first project for Design 252 was creating something for the Charette which had the theme “BLUE”. This was an ambiguous project with endless possibilities. After brainstorming, sketching and reading for days, I decided to look at reflections of light through blue water.
I looked at a whole lot of clear objects to use for this project. The idea wasn’t so much about the objects that held the water as much as the light penetrating them and projecting onto the ground. I came up with the idea of using light bulbs because they are a source of light. I hollowed them out, filled them with blue water and hung them in Art and Arch.

These are the first objects I experimented with to create the blue light effect I was looking for. I filled see through objects with water and then added food coloring to them until they were blue enough to photograph.
The Ball jar (left) is very interesting in the way it projects light because of all of the raised marks on the glass. The mini fish tank (right) was a little more straight forward because it is flat and see through. Both created something interesting to look at.

The color palette I randomly picked was Soft Sapphire. Pantone: 653C 路 RGB: 33, 87, 138 路 HEXADECIMAL: 21578A
/How would you describe your color visually and perceptually? /Address hue, value, and saturation. Where does it exist on the color wheel? /How would you describe your color psychologically and emotionally? /What does it feel like?
/What general connotations does your color carry? (ex. green > nature)
14
/Are there specific objects that are related to your color? /Does your color also carry any specific connotations? /Does it carry any cultural, social, or historical references? /Is there poetry, music, films or readings that relate to your color? /If you had to name your color, what would you call it?

PATTERN I had an idea in mind when I started designing this pattern. I didยนt want to just get a stock pattern off of ColourLovers.com or anything like that. SO, I thought I would design one a pattern with something I have always been intersted in, lightning bolts!

DUO TONE For this image I used a reverse 50mm Nikor lens to get a close up view of a Sour Patch Kid. This project was a new experience for me, I had no idea you could make a duo tone so easily in Photoshop.

DUO TONE This image was taken with the same 50mm Nikor lens, only it was not reversed. I was just playing around with my camera one day and I thought this picture of my girlfriend would be interesting as a duo tone.

TYPOGRAPHY This was my attempt at merging type with my color and pattern. The feelings I got from my color were calm and I tho
30
hought that I should try out what I felt as well as what I did not. I decided to go in a different direction because it was a little too bland.
32
After Caryยนs discovery of a pattern when my type was folded, I started to build a CD cover as well as a poster. When I sampled my friends who are very into music, I concluded that the band would have to be an electronic/indie sort of band. The Depreciation Guild seemed to fit perfectly.

JUXTAPOSITION
Using the inside cover of the book Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, I juxtaposed the idea of someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder chilling out. While not everyone has read or come in contact with the book, I feel like the overly tired feeling eye should convey something different (is not opposite) from CHILL.
38
Everyone freaks out about the Olympics, even the winter Olympics... I decided to make something to express my annoyance in my juxtaposition. I used the Olympic torch design from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games designed by Leo Obstbaum. I think the idea of putting a cool color and the word “CHILL next to fire was a clear juxtaposition.
40
MEANINGFUL CONTEXT 1 The Duotone project is something that I used in my book cover design and is something that I had always wondered how to do. This project is something I can apply to a whole slew of different ideas to give them a certain mood or make them pop. Even though we did not spend too much time on this project, I kept coming back to it over and over again.
42
MEANINGFUL CONTEXT 2 The Juxtaposition project was a lot of fun for me because even though I did not get one perfect design, I got a bunch of different iterations that helped me brainstorm, I realized while doing this the importance of looking at other designers and designs for inspiration. If I had not picked up Fight Club to read last semester I would not be where I am now.
44
MEANINGFUL CONTEXT 3 The pattern part of this section was by far my favorite because I got to build a brand new pattern. I think the coolest part of the process was seeing it o from my moleskin to so many different things. I can see this in the background of illustrations, packages and wallpaper. I think the colors I used were hilarious because in almost every application the colors hurt my eyes. This is something I think I can come back to again and again.

POSTER My original poster design was geared toward minimalism. It was made up of 2 colors, grey and orange, which played a little into the location, UT Knoxville.

TYPE INVESTIGATION after the original design was scrapped due to a lack of design. I started investigating the idea of using the letters and words as part of the actual design. Previously, my thoughts were to have an abstract background with text on top to tell people the specifics.

I used the German word “Schnell” for my Word to Word .gif file. Schnell translated means fast, rapidly, quickly, speedily, swiftly. I used the translation of “Fast” for this project. I ended up doing three different iteration of this animation. (left, bottom and next page)
