Conclusion

London Overview • Before the Romans arrived some 2000 years ago there is no evidence of London existing as any sort of thriving town or village. When the Romans arrived they quickly chose the London area as the HQ for all activities in their new island colony perhaps because the area between present day Cannon Street Station and the Tower of London, on the north bank of the River Thames made an ideal port and with quick access to high ground. An ideal place to make a settlement. • London was the largest trading center in England with trade at that time being dominated by the sale of fine English wool (from Sheep) to Antwerp mainly where it was woven into cloth. Clothes were also made locally in Antwerp. • Many say today London is a swinging, cosmopolitan, safe, fashionable capital city. Traffic is appalling but no worse than any other similar urban centre. London is also dirty but is much cleaner than it was 25 years ago. (The English are simply fun loving dirty people compared with the Swiss and the Swedish.) • The popular things spoken of in London are the transportation, population & housing, shopping, and theatre. http://www.historyofengland.net/london-history#london_today

Paris Overview

•Paris is more than 2,000 years old. Gauls of the Parisii tribe settled there between 250 and 200 BC and founded a fishing village on an island in the river that is the present-day Ile de la Cité ; the center around which Paris developed. •Paris today maintains its importance, character, and charm, though its appearance is being transformed by structures such as the BEAUBOURG and by the ambitious grands projets building program carried out under the presidency of François Mitterrand. •In addition to the La Défense arch and the Bastille Opéra, Mitterrand's projects have included the renovation of the Louvre by architect I. M. Pei, the La Villette complex on the northeastern edge of the city, and, in the southeast, the Bibliothèque de France, a great computer-age library. http://www.discoverfrance.net/France/Paris/Paris_history.shtml

London’s influence in Fashion •

London’s peek on influence in fashion was in the 80s; the decade that knew no bounds and ran wild, exploring individualistic styles and identities, pushing the envelope repeatedly.

“The 80s were an important decade for London fashion because this is when the industry became professionalized,” says Claire Wilcox, curator of the exhibition. “The industry received increased government funding and backing with receptions at Downing Street and support from Margaret Thatcher.”

Paris’ influence in Fashion • Paris became the fashion capital back in the 18th century. • Haute Couture began in the 18th century, but the French had been looked to with admiration or disdain in their dress sense well before that. In the 16th century, Anne Boleyn was famous for wearing a French-style hood, which showed her hair and had a generally provocative style. Even then, the French were famous for their liberal attitude towards sexuality. • Influence from Paris : London, New York and Milan. The famous designers during this time were Chanel, Dior, & Yves Saint Laurent. The most important fashion shows still take place in Paris and more aspiring designers go to the city to learn and showcase their work than they do London, New York or Milan. • Paris is known for the Golden Triangle, a shopping district in Paris dedicated exclusively to high fashion clothes and accessories. http://womens-fashion.lovetoknow.com/Why_is_Paris_the_Capital_of_Fashion

London’s Economic & Politics •

With a GDP of $731 billion in 2012, London is Europe’s largest metropolitan economy.

London’s economy is 9% larger than that of Paris, Europe’s second-largest urban economy, and 41% larger than third-ranked Moscow.

London is being governed in a collaboration, with positions of power occupied by politicians from different parties. This form of governing has been happening for the past decade, receiving support from the general public and politicians.

The mayor of London is Boris Johnson and was elected by Londoners. The Mayor is responsible for transport, planning and development, policing, fire services, environmental issues and the general economic well-being of the city, and has a total budget of less than £2 billion.

Currency: The UK's currency is the pound sterling (£ / GBP). Despite being a member of the European Union, the UK has not adopted the euro. There are 100 pence (p) to the pound (£). Notes come in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50.

Paris’ Economic & Politics •

Paris is not only the political and cultural capital of France but also its major financial and commercial center. Despite some pockets of poverty, it is a very wealthy city, home to many vast private fortunes, both French and foreign.

The economy is comprised of high finance, banking, and luxury tourist goods.

The President of the French Republic represents the power of the state and plays the central role in the institutions of the Fifth Republic. Elected by universal suffrage, the president is a key character in French political life. Under the constitution of the 5th Republic, the pre-eminent place of the president is established and protected by his statute.

Currency: The franc, the former official currency of France, is no longer accepted, however, you may see that some price tags in France give the price both in Euro and in francs, to help those who still think in terms of francs. There are 8 different Euro coin denominations and 7 different Euro bill denominations in circulation.
