RRR

Respond, reimagine, reintegrate is a grass roots project that aims to restitch the community and the surrounding neighborhoods to create a healthier living environment. Located within the Jonestown and Washington Hill neighborhoods of Baltimore city, this project focuses on three major aspects of a healthy community, education, commerce, and public health.

The Community Health Zone is the part of the proposal that strives to bring the community together through positive activity space and recreation space for both adults and youth. The community health zone also looks to spread health education through its health clinic.

The Education zone aims to provide the community with a very holistic adult and young adult education experience through the addition of the trade school. This zone also looks to provide much needed community education and resources to its residents through the addition of the community resource center while also trying to bring the community together through cultural education.

The Commercial Zone strives to provide retail amenity to the community as well as bring mo ney to the neighborhood. The Commercial Zone is envisioned to provide spaces that are family friendly as well as space for adults and young adults to hangout.

5000 Drawings

This mini project is a series of abstract drawings taken from real works of art such as paintings, photographs, and still frames. The objective of this project is to see beyond the initial image in order to portray the emotion or story of the work of art through a singular or series of sketches.

SOCIAL EXCHANGE:

REINVIGORATING THE MEANING OF PUBLIC SPACE This project reimagines the traditional piazza as a modern three-dimensional place for the public to gather. Keeping in mind the intended goals of the original design and bringing it to the 21st century, this project studies the type of programming and activity in the space to fill the large voids in the existing structure that tend to be dead zones for activity. With two very distinct programmatic uses the proposed structure helps to create a richer public environment providing opportunity for the government and the public to interact on an informal level.

Regenerative Design

Historic Research In many countries’ piazzas are creating spaces and moments of exchange, for people to congregate and share whether it be for business, leisure or in celebration. Historically home to a variety of programs including government, shopping, artists exhibitions, performances, public displays, and cultural celebrations the piazza has quickly become the hub of public life. One of history’s most popular piazzas is Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, Italy. Designed in 1538-1650 by Michelangelo, Pizza del Campidoglio is designed to be a connection between the surrounding government buildings and public life. Similarly, Chicago’s James R Thompson Center also looks to connect its government with its people, however in true postmodernist fashion it does this by implementing a replica of the original Piazza del Campidoglio in the center of the building. The Thompson Center’s current design and security restrictions has created a huge juxtaposition between the lower and upper floors of the building. A contrast of public versus private, government versus public, and formal versus informal. Metaphorically the building fails to display a sense of the connection and transparency of government but instead displays a notion of power with the government being inaccessible and existing above the general public.

Spontaneous Programing

Proposed Programming In keeping with the principles of a historic piazza this project seeks to create multiple places of exchange. By incorporating the programing of the Chicago Remix Project, the space becomes flooded with new and diverse activities that give opportunity for social interaction. Through the exchange of programmatic space this project brings both cultural and the typically private government space to the forefront of the atrium creating a sense of transparency as well as a physical connection as public spaces begin to rub up against government spaces.

Iterative Design This project uses iterative design techniques to test ways of abstracting the patterns from the piazza design into three-dimensional spaces that can fill the voids within the buildings programming, flooding theses spaces with public life.

Remix Design This project aims to reimagine the traditional piazza not as a twodimensional plane but by abstracting the patterns and shapes in the existing replica of the Piazza Campidoglio to form a threedimensional multilevel space that is to be inhabited and filled with activity. The design uses a dodecahedron shaped shutter system that highlights the spaces of public programming and is operable to provide privacy and sun shading when needed.

Chicago Bath House This mini project is a storytelling exercise to help envision and design fluid interior space. Through a series of collages one can walk through the experience of an urban bath house.

Narrative Design

A Bit of peace and quiet in the hustle and bustle of the city. A place that is relaxing, interacts/surrounds the user in nature and gives the feeling of solitude. A mental escape. A lagoon in the city. A Chicago hot spring.

Jaz has had a long week at work and needs a personal care day. She has been moving from place to place having meetings, running errands, attending social events, community service, and networking events. Jaz decides to go to the Chicago Bath House. As Jaz walks down the hall to her bath of choice, she goes through a series quiet soft lit spaces that have different instances and openings for light to shine through almost creating a somewhat spiritual experience. As she looks up to the ceiling of the space, she can see the sky and the beauty of the old structure. She can hear the continuous flow of water as she breathes in the fresh and relaxing aroma of the essential oils and nature. As she bathes, she starts to forget her troubles and stresses of the week. She feels as though she is on a vacation to a natural hot spring outside the city.

John is an avid swimmer he goes to the Chicago bath house to practice his strokes and diving skills. He practices here because it’s the closest pool to him the serenity allows him to focus on his craft.

Jess is an art student from a nearby school. She has a history project coming up and needs to do some research. She needs a library that carries the material she is looking for but is also close to her house. Jess chooses the Chicago bath house library because it meets her criteria as well as gives her a quiet relaxing space that allows her to interact with nature, so she doesn’t feel cooped up.

As a child Jen learned to swim at her local pool, The Chicago Bath House. Her love for swimming inspired her to join her school swim team. Jen’s swim team along with other Illinois schools host swim meets at The Chicago Bath House’s Olympic pool. Now that Jen is older, she is training as a professional swimmer. She trains and practices at the Chicago Bath House because of her long connection at this pool as well as the pools ability to provide a calming space for her to focus.

Jim likes to work out outside, but the weather is bad. So instead, he goes to the Chicago bath house gym to get the convenience of being sheltered but the benefits and feeling of being outside with fresh air, and the surrounding nature. People take yoga and work out classes at the gym with a river view.

Architectural Expressions: The Language of Public Space

Architectural Expressions: The Language of Public Space is a visual dictionary defining a taxonomy of elements aimed at public interpretation, involvement, and interaction. This project focuses on the impact and development of the public realm to create and activate public spaces that foster inclusivity and interactivity building a sense of belonging and community. To create more inclusive public space, we must first understand the relationship between design and the human experience to decipher the language of current public spaces. Architectural Expressions: The Language of Public Space deconstructs, reimagines, and reconstructs the physical elements of architecture creating new public space typologies that encourage nuance in the urban fabric and tackle inclusivity through form, access, and transparency.

Human Centered Design

MORPH (FORM) There is freedom in flexible form. A freedom that fosters fellowship. A freedom that creates familiarity. A freedom void of social conformity. There is freedom in form. Form that is vivacious. Form that is fluid. Form that is extant. Form that is indiscriminate. Form that is universal. Form that is friendly. There is a form of freedom.

CHUTES AND LADDERS (ACCESS) I miss the buildings I’ve never been, the places I cannot reach, and the souls I do not meet. The experiences I cannot have, the views I cannot see, and the city ever so sweet seemingly created for the elite. Existing on the edge, pushed into the street. My isolated city a place full of many. You are obsolete.

NOLLI (TRANSPARENCY) Was this your vision? Is this your dream? A monotonous city in which we seem, to move through blind isolated from other being. I’m not surprised that you cannot imagine how life should be, because we cannot be what we cannot see. Shaped by forces that are external from me, ones that I cannot see. Searching for the soul of our city, longing for the playful fluttering of activity. Puppeteered is our identity. So, who are we?
