Opening Title Sequences The art of the film title

V

isual Culture can be described as the connection between filmmaking and graphic design. One of the most underrated typographic movements in visual culture is the evolution of type in cinema. The opening title sequences of films have become more elaborate and spectacular over time. Beginning during the silent film era (circa 1895-1929), type became a prominent aspect to keep the audience entranced in the action of the film. During this time, there was no one position in charge of the graphics though. Lettering artists would collaborate with the scriptwriter and director so the audience could follow what they were seeing. Type was used for the titles and inter-titles in the beginning and throughout the film as well. Around 1927, sound was introduced to film and artists began to focus on how the typography would set the tone for the movie, instead of using it throughout. The first known film with synchronized sound is Warner Brother’s production The Jazz Singer, which used sound-on-disc systems. As artists began to experiment, suggestive elements began to predict the style of the movie. For example: black letter font suggested horror, ribbons and floral patterns suggested love, and type resembling “wanted” posters symbolized western. In 1928, Disney released Steamboat Willie, known as the first animated film to feature synchronize sound. Disney’s famous character design Mickey Mouse was the star but was also featured in an earlier cartoon Plane Crazy. The title sequences for these movies remained similar and plain in design to make easy edits into different languages.

ontinuing down the Walt Disney Studio film timeline was the release of one hundred movies between 1929 and 2000, each evolving between cartoon, live action, fantasy, and reality. Meanwhile, Oskar Fischinger, an avant-garde animator and German painter, began the research of the relationship between visual effects and music. His exploration was first conceived in his film Studies in the mid 1950’s. Graphic designer, Susan Bradley, then revolutionized it in 2001 with her work in Monsters, Inc., which introduced motion graphics into title design. Susan Bradley continued with the Walt Disney Company for six years where she became the manager of the “Title Graphics Department” and contributed to the sequences of Toy Story and WALL-E. Her most impressive work however was in the 2006 release of Ratatouille. Inspired by the slab-serif typeface “Rockwell”,Bradley hand drew the main typography as well as the cursive font in the title sequences at the beginning and end of the film.

“The hand-drawn cursive in the beginning credits was a variation on some sketches from Harley [Jessup] so we’d feel like we were in Paris. The serif typography in the end cards I drew initially in pencil inspired by a slab serif typeface called Rockwell. They were scanned and re-painted in photoshop.”

“I think the biggest mistake is seeing the title sequence as separate from its film.” Interview with Susan Bradley, ThunderChunky.co.uk

Disney purchased Pixar and it’s animated studio leader Steve Jobs for $7.4 billion in 2006.
