AUGUST 25-26

Taylors First Baptist Church “This conference is such a ray of hope for those times we feel that we’ve blown it and such inspiration for the years and issues to come.” Conference Participant $35/person | Register: www.taylorsfbc.org/married Childcare provided if registered by 8/7. Registration Open through August 20

Dear Church Family, I just returned from London where our mission team relied on our feet and public transportation for days. Americans, I then realized, have a love affair with their cars. We practically live in them when you think of the amount of time we spend in them. And regardless of the make or model or how old it might be, all car owners have one thing in common: they require continual maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations and major repairs when those inevitable malfunctions occur. Whether the car you see at the light next to you is running smoother than ever or is about to break down on the side of the road, it costs you something to keep it going for the long haul. So it is with our marriages and families. They are in need of continual spiritual maintenance and repair. And that is why I'm so excited about the initial response and potential impact of our Marriage Conference weekend on August 25 and 26. Tim Kimmel from Family Matters, who spoke to Taylors recently, will be leading a conference for husbands, wives, singles and anyone concerned about their homes, families and children. Then, following the conference, we will launch an 8-week small group time for those who desire to take those next steps in strengthening their marriages and relationships. Please don't wait to register and don't hesitate to reach out to those who need this conference centered on the gospel and grace of Jesus. His glory through His design for your life and home is well worth the cost and the investment of this weekend. Cheri and I are looking forward to growing with you during this great weekend and beyond.

For All Single Adults Ages 24 and Up This fall we will kick off Singles Fellowship. Singles Fellowship will provide special events for singles of all ages, to gather together throughout the year. Any single within the body of Taylors FBC is encouraged to take part. Two examples will be a Bible study offered on Wednesday nights (details on page three) and periodic Sunday lunches. Watch for more about this special fellowship as its mission and purpose unfolds. Be sure to join us for our first event! Singles Fellowship Lunch: Sunday, August 13, 11:45 am, in Building C Welcome Area, $5 per person The concept of the new symbol is based on the idea of three cords, knotted together - represented by the orange, blue, and green circles. Ecclesiastes 4:12 - "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

“Although initially hesitant, I’m glad I agreed to be part of a D-Group here at Taylors FBC. The friendship, growth, and encouragement I’ve received through the group have been for me, an amazing gift. The Deceiver likes to trick us into thinking we are alone dealing with problems no one else is facing, that everyone else’s families, self-image, friendships, finances, jobs, vacations, and devotional lives are perfect. However living in close community through my d-group, growing together through the study of Scripture over an extended period of time, continually rebalances and reminds me that this journey is difficult for all, that we need each other, and that the truth of Scripture is still relevant, still transforming, still life-giving, still absolutely vital.” Laurie Buck "D-groups has given imperfect men a time to come together, remove the mask, study the Bible, dive into Scripture and go deeper in the mercy and grace of a perfect God." Alex Hyman, Taylors Men Coordinator "Read Scripture, meditate on Scripture, memorize Scripture and share Scripture. These are the spiritual disciplines that I have desired in my life. Being in a D-Group makes it happen for me on a weekly basis. My prayer for my D-Group is this: 'Open our eyes that we may behold wondrous things from your Word' Psalms 119:18." D-Group Participant

Celebrating Dr. Jose Delgado’s 10th Anniversary as Pastor of Iglesia Bautista Betania

(2007-2017) This month marks the tenth year Dr. Jose Delgado has served as the Pastor over our church plant, Iglesia Bautista Betania. We want to thank the Delgado family for their continued service to the Hispanic community in Taylors and faithfulness to the Kingdom of God. Historical Overview of Iglesia Bautista Betania In the early 2000s, Dr. Frank Page, former pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church, and Larry Bateman expressed to the South Carolina Baptist Convention their vision of supporting a Hispanic ministry in Taylors, SC. A partnership between the SCBC and Taylors FBC formed to financially support a Hispanic church plant, Iglesia Bautista Betania. In 2006, Dr. Jose Delgado was invited by Dr. Page to be the pastor of Betania. Dr. Delgado officially began as Lead Pastor of Betania in August 2007. Dr. Víctor Prieto, associate professor in linguistics and Spanish at North Greenville University, was later added as the Minister of Praise and Associate Pastor. Today, the church meets at the former Southern Bleachery Church just down the road and averages sixty each week in attendance. Congratulations and Praise God!

ENGAGE THE WORLD. Alaska Team Report from the Field Greetings from Alaska—the Last Frontier! Your Taylors FBC teams spent most of July working with the Bodolosky family under the umbrella of Child Evangelism Fellowship and Fireweed Ministry. Each day we served alongside the 12-member “Bodo” family and their friends from their church, Alliance Christian Fellowship, in two public parks in Eagle River, Alaska. We were identified by yellow T-shirts and lanyards as a Christian ministry, and we offered crafts and games in the parks from 10:30 am - 4 pm each day. Around mid-day, we served a free bag lunch to any child or adult who wanted one, and we shared a Bible lesson from the Child Evangelism Fellowship (Good News Clubs) curriculum. Then, through one-on-one conversations with kids and adults, we were able to build relationships and share about Christ.

Single Mom's Oil Change August 19 Sign up to serve at the REACH desk or in your Life Group. Help our neighbors by bringing school supplies for these families. Find bins in the Connection Center or Welcome Center.

Over the last few years, this ministry has grown by leaps and bounds. For example, the Parks and Rec Department in Eagle River saw what a positive impact the ministry has had in one park and called the Bodoloskys to see if they would consider taking on another park. Our church was able to send two teams this year and we were able to be in two parks over two weeks, so our church’s impact has actually quadrupled over what we were able to do last year. It has been amazing for our team members who were on last year’s team to see families they met for the first time last year in the park now involved in ministering to others in the park! Our teams were made up of Taylors folks of all ages—from children to senior citizens—and everyone played a role! The children and teens were able to connect with the other kids in the park, playing everything from Capture the Flag to swings and bouncy house. They would draw other park kids to participate and eventually hear the gospel. Adult women were able to engage with the moms in the park, and adult men were able to talk with the dads and older teens who came to play basketball or just hang out. One of the parks has been notorious for drug activity, and having a Christian presence there has helped to cut down on illicit activity. The Lord has even allowed the Bodoloskys to minister in Christ’s name to some of those involved in drug use. Four of our older Taylors FBC teenagers have served this summer as interns with the Fireweed Ministry. They have worked every day serving in the parks, helping with meal preparation, cleaning the student apartments at the University of Alaska where the ministry teams are housed, and playing with the children. They have stepped up to serve in every way and have grown in faith and maturity in Christ. Both teams would like to thank the Taylors family for sending us on this mission. Not only were we able to encourage and support our own missionary family, but we were also able to connect with the families in town and plant more seeds for the Kingdom. Please continue to pray for the Bodoloskys and for the people of Eagle River, that the work being done would yield a rich harvest of new Christ-followers. –Chelle Evette and Shannon Keating 6 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG

Mom to Mom: Inside Out Parenting

Wednesdays, September 13-November 29 & January 10-March 28 | 9-11 am in The Loft

Mom to Mom is designed around the Titus 2:4 concept of older women teaching and encouraging younger women in their role as a wife, mother, and daughter of God. Together we will take a look at what God’s word has to say about our missions as moms—and what that looks like for 21st Century moms. As we explore God’s word together, we will gain godly mom-confidence in a confused world, learn to create contagious Christian community amidst a chaotic culture, and grow in our ability to build Christ-like character in our kids. Parenting is much more about who we are than what we do. Good parenting happens from the inside out! During our time together, you will receive biblical guidance on parenting, join in small group discussion, and enjoy the interaction with other moms in a similar season of life. What could be better than participating in God’s plans and purposes as He changes us--and our kids--from the inside out! Cost: $20

Lord, Change my Attitude by James MacDonald Wednesdays, September 13-November 15 | 9-11 am in Room B132-133 Mondays, September 18-November 20 | 6:30-8 pm in Room B129 What does God think about attitudes? This updated study uses examples from the Israelites’ journey out of Egypt to show that attitudes can affect whether someone stays in the wilderness or enjoys the blessings of the Promised Land. Learn how you can put off attitudes God hates and put on those He honors, from complaining to thankfulness, coveting to contentment, doubting to faith, and more. Cost: $20

Take Heart for the Journey Wednesdays, August 23-October 4 | 6:30 pm | Room B132-133 The Bible is like a treasure chest filled with valuable contents waiting to be discovered when we make our way into the secret place of the presence of God. It is there we find unsearchable, endless, indescribable riches that He longs for us to have---the more we have the more there is to have. Each week we will open the treasured Word of God uncovering precious gems for the pocket of our hearts, enabling us to Take Heart for the Journey.

Experiencing Discipleship Wednesdays, September 13-November 15 | 9-11 am in Room B128 Are you interested in joining a Discipleship Group (D-Group) but don’t quite know where to start? In our first meeting, we will provide basic training for women interested in learning more and trying out a group. Training will include testimonials from women who are currently participating in a D-Group of their own. New groups will then be formed to study the book of John together for the next ten weeks. We hope this “trial” will whet your appetite for the on-going experience of studying God’s Word while building intimate relationships with a small group of women. Discipleship Groups for Women are part of our “Pathway” to Discipleship at Taylors and are one step in our mission to Equip Believers. D-Groups for women are designed to meet together weekly to intentionally study the Word, pray for one another, and build more intimate relationships as we sharpen one another in our walk with the Lord. To learn more, join the "Experiencing Discipleship" class on Wednesday mornings or participate in the D-Group informational meeting on October 1 (see details on page two).

Fall 2017 Kickoff | September 7

Friends, Food & Frames Speaker: Wendy Duke Soup, Salad & Dessert 6-8:30 pm Fellowship Hall

Wendy Duke and her husband Scott serve in world missions through the non-profit ministry they founded in 2006, Impact Sports. This year, they will lead fifteen international projects using their expertise in sports to share the gospel in countries that are hostile or closed to Christianity. Between international trips, they take teams into state and federal prisons to play sports and share their faith with the inmates they meet. Wendy writes a blog called "All Over the Map" about how God shows up in her crazy, eclectic life. Her first book, Grace in the Middle, was published in 2015 and chronicles her family's physical and spiritual struggles when their daughter was born with cancer and serious birth defects. When the Dukes aren’t traveling overseas or playing ball with prison inmates, they live an "ordinary" life in the metropolis of Spartanburg, South Carolina. Please bring an unchurched friend, neighbor, coworker for a fun, relaxed evening and a winsome story of how God can make a beautiful picture of our lives.
