REACH TEAM UPDATE We sent two teams to Alaska in June — the Alaska REACH Team and the Regeneration Student Choir.
ALASKA REACH TEAM JESSICA LEPPARD, TEAM MEMBER During the Alaska REACH trip of 2021 we partnered with Fireweed Ministries and the Bodolosky family. We served in a park in Eagle River, near the city of Anchorage. Leading up to the trip, our team planned games, crafts, and activities to engage kids in each of the parks. We also helped to do two park parties with Fireweed while we were there. David and Chelle Evette led our team from Taylors. They are great team leaders and helped each of us to be prepared for what we were going to be doing. Their many years of experience leading this team helped to unify us and use all of our team's talents to serve the Lord effectively. Our team worked well together and was unified in everything that we did. We had many different personalities on our team and God used each one of us to connect with many different people. We were able to share the gospel with many children and adults. We also met other believers that we were able to encourage in their walk with the Lord. God’s plan is perfect and he knew exactly the people we would encounter. Alaska is a beautiful place where you can undoubtedly see the intricate details of God’s creation. Mountains in South Carolina cannot compare to the many mountains surrounding the area where we were. In the evenings we spent time together as a team seeing the beautiful landscape and growing closer as a team. Our team was blessed to go to Alaska to engage the people there for Christ. It is apparent that there is much spiritual darkness in the cities there. The people of the cities there need much prayer for the chains of sin to be broken by the Gospel of Jesus. The Bodolosky family engages these cities on a daily basis and needs prayers of encouragement to fulfill the Great Commission just as Jesus calls each one of us. Matthew 28:19
FAITH LEPPARD, TEAM MEMBER Going to Alaska was my first REACH trip, and it is one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. There were many different kinds of kids in the parks that have different backgrounds and family circumstances. One of my greatest experiences on the trip was when I shared the wordless book and went over John 3:16 with a little girl. I believe one day she will accept Jesus into her heart. I am very thankful I got to go to Alaska and minister to children. 6 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG
REGENERATION STUDENT CHOIR REACH TRIP JAMES BODOLOSKY, OUR REACH PARTNER AT FIREWEED MINISTRY The week the Regeneration Choir served with Fireweed Ministry in Alaska was such a blessing! We had challenges before the team arrived and it was clear satan did not want the team to succeed on the mission God had set before them. Twenty-four hours before the team was to arrive, the housing we had set up fell through and we had to find a housing solution for 65 people. Then their flights were cancelled and the airline‘s new plan had the team arriving in waves throughout the night. What the world may have seen as chaos we eventually saw as God’s perfect plan being played out before our eyes. The team hit the ground running, ministering to people in three parks through a soccer camp and park ministry. The most incredible thing we saw was how God re-opened the Fairview community that had been closed since the COVID restrictions began. Initially we asked the team to prayer walk in this community, but that led to all-day ministry with children that would continue for the rest of the summer. We saw with the Regeneration Choir that God is faithful when we say, “Here I am Lord! Send me.”
KEZIA DEIGHTON, 8TH GRADE I loved ministering to and building relationships with the children. This was the first time I’ve ever taught a children’s class or shared the Wordless Book. It was an amazing experience to have 10 sets of eyes fixed intently upon you, waiting for more, eager to sing with us, and jumping at the chance to make Wordless Book bracelets. It amazed me when they could quote what each color of the Wordless Book meant, and would be so careful to not wrinkle their books as they put them in their pockets. Our team wasn’t anything special — just an ordinary 65 people who loved God. But it’s the ordinary people that God uses to do miraculous things. Two names have been added to God’s Book of Life, and many more seeds have been planted. I loved studying the Bible with the Bodos and realized just how much more there is to the Bible. They gave us a book, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. It really makes you think about where you are in your spiritual life and how you can improve it. TAYLORSFBC.ORG | 7
GRACE HARTSELL, COLLEGE Alaska is an incredibly beautiful state. We did much more than sightseeing. As we went into the communities around Anchorage and spent time with kids there, I found that Alaska is a whole different world. Underneath the extraordinary scenery lies brokenness and darkness. Several kids I met were in situations that I’d never even dreamed of. Yet many of them were still filled with joy. Hearing about their situations humbled me and made me very grateful for what I have. Not only that, but I’ve learned through their joy. Every time it seemed like we had a plan for the trip, something would fall through, whether it was housing or flights or sickness. This trip taught me to be flexible more than ever, and to be joyful and grateful in the midst of stressful times. The flights did not work out as originally planned, but everyone got there safely. The house we were supposed to stay in was full of bugs, but everyone still had a place to sleep. God has been continually teaching me how to rejoice and find comfort in him in all circumstances, and this trip really drove that point home. Going forward, I’ll take the joy I learned from the children and apply it to my own life. I may not struggle in ways they do, but I still will thank God for everything he’s done for me and everything he’s given me.
HUNTER SWANGER, 12TH GRADE I initially joined the Regeneration Student Choir because of my interest in the mission trip to Alaska. Being a teenage boy, I was hesitant at first to put myself out there and join the choir, but I knew I had to push myself out of my comfort zone. Little did I know this trip was going to not only help me grow stronger in my faith, but have a greater impact on the kids I was going to be working with in Alaska. I had the pleasure of meeting a young child there during park ministry. I was really able to take the circumstances we both have in common regarding our fathers, and relate to him on a more personal level. With this, he soon opened up to me informing me he had never been told who Jesus is. After days of playing in the park together and getting to know him more, I finally sat down with him to explain what happens after we die. As a result of our time together that week, we prayed and he told me that he wanted to accept Christ into his heart. Sometimes I like to think that I had a great impact on the kids we served, but I was entirely wrong. They made me realize that they impacted me way more than I could have ever helped them. As a result of this, I had wished that I had joined the student choir a long time ago. It has been an amazing, fun and unforgettable life experience altogether!
TYLER NORMAN, 7TH GRADE Park Ministry is a great way to connect with the Alaskan community. One activity we did to get kids to join was a game called King’s Square. In King’s Square, there are two people in each square, so we would team up with the kids to help them play and connect with them. After we played some games we would have lunch and share a story from the Bible. I really enjoyed helping the kids paint a craft that went along with the Bible story we shared that day. 8 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG
SARAH CATHERINE SULLIVAN, 11TH GRADE Alaska is truly the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Not just beautiful in its appearance — the mountains, glaciers, and sunrises - but in its people. Although we encountered a lot of diversity and brokenness, we experienced a lot of love in Alaska, and for me it was specifically in Palmer where we held a soccer camp for kids. The soccer camp was filled with stretches, drills, games, LOTS of duck duck goose, coloring, lunches, Bible stories, VBS songs, and awards! We had the opportunity to spread the love and hope of Jesus Christ and pour our hearts into so many kids during the week, but hearing their stories was the most moving part for me. I will never forget feeling so heartbroken hearing the story of one of the five year-old girls in my soccer camp group. The way she talked about her past and the abuse she witnessed in her home, the wall in her bedroom beaten down, finding her parents overdosed on the bathroom floor, moving to foster care and sharing her wish to be home on her birthday (which is not going to happen). I just wanted to cry, but in that moment I prayed for her and thanked God for the life and the parents I have been given. Over the 10 days in Alaska, I fell in love with it, but I also fell in love with God more and more because of how GOOD HE IS! He loves His children, provides just what we need, and never leaves or forsakes us. God is with us; He’s with the little girl in my group, and He never stops providing and fighting for us.
REFLECTIONS FROM ADULT LEADERSHIP • "Be more than flexible, be fluid so you can change and adapt as needed." was our challenge from James Bodolosky. "Fluid" is what we all became and it was beautiful. • Satan tried to stop us but God showed up! • Our students did a wonderful job sharing their love for Jesus! Though there were many things I loved about Alaska, what stands out to me the most was observing a little girl being walked through the plan of salvation by one of our very own students and becoming a Christian. • We had many kids that participated and had opportunities to love on them while sharing the gospel through word and song. • To watch students rise to the challenges of the week was rewarding. God is teaching and using them. He is also teaching me.
• [At FBC Palmer Soccer Camp] I was able to watch our people jump in, love on these children, play with them, teach them, and share Jesus with them. • ...we broke up into groups: Palmer Soccer Camp, Eagle River Park, and Fairview Park. In each of these groups we had stories from the gospel ... and even had two salvations at the Fairview Park Ministry. • In the park we witnessed a homeless mom being reunited with her children after not having seen them for two years. Even though she was encouraged to come home with family, she returned to the streets. I don’t know their names, but God does. Praying for restoration. • ...thanks to the people of Taylors First Baptist Church. Your generosity and our church’s desire to see the gospel taken throughout the world made this trip possible for many.

R E F U G E sports WALK TO REFUGE — A WALK IN A REFUGEE’S SHOES Saturday October 9 | Taylors Rec Ballfields and Picnic Shelter
Join us for an interactive experience depicting difficulties and dangers faced by people fleeing persecution, wars, and death – seeking refuge, struggling to survive. You'll experience an eye opening, mind, and heart changing, one kilometer, reality fact-check. This is the real story! At last year’s Walk to Refuge, walkers were powerfully impacted by what happened at the end of their "refugee journey" as they were met at an airport by World Relief volunteers. No spoiler alerts. You have to come out and see for yourself. The Area Director for Mission Increase, a national organization that works with non-profits, attended our Walk to Refuge event last year and was so moved by its impact that he shared photos and video of the Walk with the organization’s national leaders and they will be using our Walk to Refuge as a model in their 2022 nationwide training program. Join us Wednesday, August 25, at 7:30 pm in Room B132/133 for an interest meeting where we will be recruiting volunteers (the cast and crew). Watch for additional details at refugesports.org. 10 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG
Love Taylors is what we do at Taylors FBC for our community – we serve our neighbors, build on-going relationships, and share the love of Jesus.
GRIEF SUPPORT FOR SPOUSES Wednesdays, September 8 - October 27 | 6:15 - 7:45 pm | Room B132/133 Grief is a life experience that needs equipping tools and encouragement to walk in an unfamiliar and difficult season. Even mature followers of Christ can find themselves somewhat “lost” in the fog of grief that comes with the loss of a spouse. In 1995, Kathy Sams was a new widow with young children who needed support in her unexpected path. She didn’t know of a group to help widows manage a new life journey and approached a Taylors FBC team member. Together they, and several other recent widows and widowers, began a grief support group specifically designed to meet the needs of grieving spouses. Now twenty-six years later, Grief Support for Spouses continues. The facilitators, members of Taylors FBC, are not trained counselors, financial, or legal advisors, but each has walked the path of losing a spouse. They desire to share the comfort they have experienced in their loss to others, and serve, following a mission statement found in 2 Corinthians 1: 3-5 (NIV): “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” You’re invited to join us to hear from speakers such as a trained counselor, pastor, and other widows and widowers. Discussions center around new struggles, learning new skills, managing personal and individual loss, and moving toward strengths, in a confidential environment. In the reality of suffering, Grief Support will help you find biblical perspective on who God is in loss and how to draw closer to Him. Grief Support is not a “fix” or a solution, but one way to connect with others and share in a safe place. One former participant says, “It took a while but helped me move along in this sometimes difficult journey.” Others have said, “It is comforting to know I am not alone.” Many derive encouragement from insight about dealing with holidays or hearing others voice their same challenges. If you are ready to attend our group or know of someone who is, sign up at taylorsfbc.org/events or in the Church Center App. You will be warmly welcomed!

Chad and Tammie Lingerfelt Joined October 2020 When Chad and Tammie relocated to Greenville and purchased a house in Taylors, a local Pastor recommended visiting Taylors FBC. They began visiting with us in person in September of 2020 at a time when we were still dealing with the transitions related to COVID 19.
What made you return after your first visit?

When we visited in September, simply put... the love of the people and how mission-minded they are. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, explaining the mission of the church and answering all of our questions. Another main reason we came back was the message and the Word, and of course we love the worship.
Why did you decide to join Taylors FBC?

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
One definition of community is described as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Taylors College has been blessed with a community that rallies around Jesus, the Gospel, and an embracing Christlike community. Consistency has been key. Over the past several months our college students began a journey digging into the book of Mark, chapter by chapter, on Sunday nights. Learning how to study God’s Word together is foundational for any believer, young adults are no exception. We have been asking simple questions of the text: What is God saying or doing in this passage? Does this passage reveal anything special about God’s Character? Is there a promise in these verses? And more. Through the plain reading of the text and this simple method, we are seeing a closer-knit body within Taylors College. More importantly, an attraction to God’s Word. A desire to be together pressed further than Sunday night. As summer approached we began working with Taylors Rec in rehabbing our sand volleyball courts. This has been awesome! On June 9 we hosted our first night of sand volleyball with over 30 people showing up. Again, consistency is key. Every Tuesday night we have welcomed recent high school graduates, college students, and young professionals to our sand volleyball court. This has become a rhythm for our ministry that birthed from a study of God’s Word. What a testimony! As we look toward the fall, we are excited to see our out-of-town college students return and commission our “home” students to their campus. We encourage you to pray for our college students and young professionals. Specifically, that they would be attracted to study God’s Word and build a Gospel-centered community wherever they go. USHER MINISTRY
We’re excited to add the Usher Ministry to our Guest Services Teams and to introduce our new Usher Team Leaders, Brian Applewhite and Tyler Brown. We’ve also added a number of new Ushers who will serve on a rotating basis for our worship services, so please look for these new faces and welcome those who have agreed to serve. Our Usher Teams will be responsible primarily for greeting and seating people and are an integral part of serving both guests and members. Many thanks go to Ronnie Davis who has served in the role as Leader for Ushers for many years. Ronnie will continue to serve in other ways, as well as leading the Ushers for funerals. He has been an invaluable resource to us in making this transition and will continue to give support as needed.
