PASTOR'S PAGE Over the next few weeks, as we usher in the fall season, we have some incredible opportunities to grow spiritually together. I've included just a few of the upcoming events and speakers on this page as a sample of how we are trying to create an environment of discipleship at Taylors. Our annual time with our church wide leadership on August 11 kicks things off -- a wonderful time of celebrating what God is already doing here but also a time to challenge us to an even greater level of loving and serving people. Then, as this page and newsletter shows, there are a number of people and platforms through which we can learn to imitate Jesus and invest in others to do the same. Join in — I don't want you to miss out on what Jesus might be calling you to this fall. — Paul

The SBC's Voice, August 11 Women's Bible Study BEGINS IN SEPTEMBER This fall, we are bringing all women's Bible study groups together for a meaningful study called Ezer. Throughout this study on womanhood, we hope to unite our women in a deeper understanding of their God-given design and how that can be lived and modeled in today's culture. see page seven

I am thrilled that Dr. Russell Moore, our newlyappointed President of the Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission, will be preaching in all three services. Dr. Moore is the voice of Southern Baptists in Washington, DC, and is uniquely gifted to speak to the cultural issues of our day from a gospel-centered perspective. You won't want to miss him.

Outdoor Baptism SEPTEMBER 8, 4:30 PM Join us for our annual church wide celebration of new life in Christ! The annual Outdoor Baptism is a beautiful picture of a disciple’s obedience. see page three 2 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG

In this study we will address the question: What did Jesus mean when He said “Follow Me”? In following Him, you will find the purpose you were created for which is to bring glory to God by sharing the Gospel and to make disciples who in turn make disciples. A whole slate of additional Journey classes will be offered on Wednesday evening. see page five

Welcome Henry Blackaby AUGUST 21, 6:30 PM I am also so excited to welcome Dr. Henry Blackaby to help us launch our Wednesday evening fall programming. Dr. Blackaby's influence on the kingdom has been enormous through books and studies like Experiencing God. We look forward to how he will instruct and inspire us to greater discipleship among the generations at Taylors. see page four

Fall 2013 Schedule

Session One: September 4 – October 9

Follow Me

Measure of a Man

Keys to Abundant Living

Author David Platt wants to know: “What did Jesus really mean when He said, ‘Follow me’?” For many Christians, following Jesus is seen as best done from a distance. We want to be disciples as long as doing so does not intrude on our lifestyles, our preferences, and even our religion. But what if we really took the time to look Jesus in the eye and see who He truly is? What if we really listened to Jesus’ words and heard what He is truly saying?

The Measure of a Man is an image of what a godly church leader, husband, father, businessman, or young man should strive to become. With the Apostle Paul as our guide, The Measure of a Man will guide us in our journey toward male Christian maturity and discipleship.

Our Lord must have really trusted us to give us a full set of keys when He said, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 16:19) It’s time we unlock the door of truth and learn more about who God created us to be as His female image bearer. Our identity, as women, is first and foremost to be found in Jesus Christ.

What is the Ezer study

that everyone is talking about? Pronounced “eh-zair,” this new women’s ministry focus was founded upon the quest for scriptural truth for women. Women were created in the image of God. Here at Taylors, our heart’s desire is to provide women with freedom and clarity on what that means according to God’s Word and apart from cultural and religious expectations. Guilt and unrealistic expectations do not reflect God’s heart for women. Throughout Scripture, women are referred to as an “ezer-kenegdo” or an essential counterpart – as one who gives inherent strength. Everything about what it means to be a woman is essential and valuable. Being an ezer is the core of who a woman is, regardless of her role, marriage, job or life circumstance. It is “not what a woman does, but who she is created to be. It is her God-given design, thereby reflecting the image and glory of God in uniquely female ways.” Many opportunities are offered for you to join us: Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm beginning September 4, Wednesdays 9-11 am beginning September 11, and Mondays 7-8:30 pm beginning September 16. All Bibles studies, including Mom to Mom and Encounter, will join together for this eight week study to learn, laugh and experience life change together. God’s Mission Being Fulfilled Through Taylors FBC by Jeremy Thompson

One year ago I laid a blank sheet of paper on my desk and began asking the Lord to fill it with His vision and mission for the Taylors FBC Missions Ministry. God has been faithful. He has filled the paper and given us His direction. I share the following with a heart of thanks and expectancy--thankful to the Lord for His direction and expectant of all that God is going to do in and through Taylors FBC, for the glory of His Name among all nations.

Why does the Missions Ministry of Taylors FBC exist? We exist to equip and send the members of Taylors FBC to make disciples of all nations.

Why will we equip and send Taylors FBC to make disciples of all nations? To fulfill the Great Commission. Jesus’ last words to His disciples before ascending to heaven were, “Go and make disciples of all nations

baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all I have commanded you” Matthew 28:19-20.

Why all nations? God will receive nothing less for His Son than the worship of every tribe, tongue and nation as seen in Revelation.

Why do we equip the saints? In Ephesians 4, Paul says that “he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and the teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry” Ephesians 4:11-12. Therefore, the role of the Missions Ministry of Taylors FBC is to equip the saints for the work of ministry or missions.

How will we equip Taylors FBC to make disciples of all nations? We will equip the saints of Taylors FBC through the teaching of the Word of God, that they may be obedient to all He has commanded and able to teach others to do the same. We will also train in biblical and culturally appropriate models of disciple making. This fall we will offer a Journey course – Missions 101 – to begin this process of equipping the saints for the work of missions.

Jesus said to His disciples, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” John 20:21. As Jesus was sent by the Father, He then sent out His disciples and us to “go and make disciples” Matthew 28:19. The church also followed the same example by sending out Paul and Barnabus to fulfill the work to which Jesus had called them.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” John 20:21 (ESV)

Where will we send Taylors FBC to make disciples?

We could all make a list of people who impacted our lives when we were younger. We honor them, brag about them and deep down inside we know we wouldn’t be the same without their influence. Could you imagine if one day you found out that it was YOUR name that came to mind when a man or woman wrote down the people who influenced them? Well, we don't serve others to receive honor for ourselves, but we all have the potential to invest in others by serving them and leading them. Consider joining the teams of Preschool & Children, Student Ministry, or our College Ministry. One day you might find out you made "the list"…"whatever you do for the least of these brothers of mine, you do for Me." Contact: Brittany Pirkle, 292-4056 or brittanyp@taylorsfbc.org

We will send Taylors FBC to make disciples among the peoples of our neighborhoods, our nation, and all nations. As we reach our own neighbors, we will also look for pockets of lostness in our community and within our state in order to make disciples. We are looking to partner with a major urban center in North America where there is an overwhelming need for church planting among vast amounts of lost people. We will partner with people groups overseas who are unengaged or have no access to the Gospel. This year we will take vision trips to Salt Lake City, South Asia, and a remote location where we will meet with teams from North Africa and the Middle East - that we might form long term partnerships. We will take the responsibility of making disciples among these people groups that they may be represented around the throne and the Lamb at the end of the age.

In what Spirit will we accomplish this mission? We will accomplish this mission in the Spirit of the Lord and in a spirit of unity. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me, and low I am with you always, even to the end of the age” Matthew 29: 18 & 20. We go in the authority of Jesus and in the power of His Spirit. We also go together, as the local Body. We stand together, striving side by side for the sake of the Gospel. Recently, after much prayer, we formed a Great Commission Leadership Team and had our first meeting. This team, along with the Minister of Missions and many others at Taylors FBC, will work together to lead us in making disciples of all nations!

Kick-Off Sunday, November 3 We will provide cardboard Gospel Opportunity boxes.

Collection Sunday, November 17 We are looking forward with great anticipation to this year's Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box collection! Thank you Taylors family for your generous support last year as we sent 1,753 shoe boxes to 1,753 children around the world. There is no doubt that many more were reached with the good news of Jesus Christ as friends and family members also saw the love you packed in those shoe boxes. In order to reach our goal of 2,000 this year, we need your help! NEW THIS YEAR We are assembling an "OCC Team" to facilitate all aspects of this wonderful event. One task is assembling boxes. Please be one of the twentyfive volunteers we need on Saturday, November 2, from 2-5 pm to assemble. Refreshments will be provided! Please contact Sheila Dilleshaw at 864-905-4491 if you are interested in employing your passion for OCC as a team member.

HoPeNeT Have you ever wondered why more Bible study, more prayer, more worship services, more… don’t necessarily result in more mature disciples of Christ? Is there something we’re missing in our quest to make disciples? In his book, The Emotionally Healthy Church, pastor and author, Peter Scazzero, suggests that one reason the church often fails to make mature disciples is that we quickly point to the disciplines listed above while ignoring the dimension of emotional health. After all, God created us to be not only spiritual beings, but physical, social, intellectual, and emotional as well. If any one part of us is broken, our entire being is affected. Through HopeNet Ministries, we strive to help people examine the brokenness in their lives in order to experience the healing power of our Lord Jesus Christ – the One who came “to preach good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners.” The same One who comforts those who mourn, provides for those who grieve, and bestows on them “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair!” (Isaiah 61: 1-3) Kathy Dority, Minister of Assimilation and Spiritual Care | kathyd@taylorsfbc.org

EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT MINISTRY Led by Ron Phelps & Paul Barber Second and fourth Tuesday of every month, 7-8:45 pm, Family Life Center ESM is for those who are without a job or looking for a change.

R3: RESCUE, REPAIR, RESTORE Home Repair Team Led by Gilbert Rivers What happens when our members open their eyes to the community around us? Amazing things as each part of the Body does its work (1 Corinthians 12)! Our R3 Home Repair Team recently brought together different members of the Taylors FBC Body to use spiritual gifts such as mercy, service, encouragement, and others to impact the lives of an older couple in our immediate neighborhood. Through By His Hands, a ministry of R3 that delivers meals and is led by Dennis & Donna Klein, the Home Repair Team learned of a home-bound family who had extensive termite damage. The team assessed the damage to determine the

extent of the repairs and then solicited help from Life Groups to adopt this project by funding and/or volunteering to help with the repairs. Several Life Groups collected money and members of the Darnell/ Cunningham Life Group volunteered to work on the repairs. The outcome? Each member of the Body who served graciously used his/ her gifts, the home was repaired, and the homeowners were overcome with gratefulness to the point of tears at the generosity and compassion of our volunteers. Thank you to all who donated time and resources to serve our neighbors in this beautiful way – you are truly the hands and feet of Christ!

GRIEF SUPPORT FOR SPOUSES Mondays, October 7-November 26 6:45-8:30 pm | B127 Led by Fred & Judy Brown Register: hopenet@taylorsfbc.org / 678-8833

MISSION 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this; to look after orphans and widows in their distress… James 1:27. This verse leaves little to be interpreted on the role the body of Christ should play in the lives of orphans and widows. Currently there are 13,000,000 orphans around the world who have lost both parents and are living in orphanages or on the street. When first read, this number seems daunting. With 247,000,000 Christians in the United States alone, if little more than 5% of Christians in this country adopted a child, there would be no child on Earth without a parent. 119,000,000 is the number of children in the world who have lost one parent and need our support; whose single parents are many of those widows that James spoke about. Mission 1:27 exists as an avenue for the Body and our community to serve the fatherless. It is our hope that you will join us in making a difference.

“Having just completed the Grief Support Ministry at Taylors, I look back fondly at the impact this group has made, not only in my journey through the grief process, but also in my life and my relationship with God. Arriving at week one, lost and confused, wounded and alone, I was immediately surrounded with the love and open arms of a skilled, compassionate team of group leaders, in addition to the sixteen new friends who were as lost as I was.” “Over the eight week period, we cried together, shared each other’s sense of loss, and gradually began to accept the grand design of life and the love that envelopes each of us through Christ. Guided by the application of God’s Word and specific topics related to the grief journey, each week I felt not only a calm sense of healing, but more importantly, a profound sense of purpose for my loss and for my life.”

“As I sat back at our 'graduation' dinner and observed my friends laughing, sharing stories of love and compassion, and planning our next adventures as a group, I was truly humbled by how far each of us had come in our short time together. I have absolute faith that my grief will be ministered to by the loving hand of God and the continued support of the Taylors FBC team. The greatest gift I received from our time together, however, has been the development of a sense of personal ministry that will empower me to reach out to those who suffer, as I have suffered, and lend the gentle hand of comfort that was extended to me during my most critical time of need." — Grief Support Participant “Our Grief Support sessions are such a joy in spite of great sorrow. The joy is in meeting and loving wonderful people and walking alongside them through their pain, grief, and sorrow. There is a bond between them, God, the facilitators, and Fred and me that only God can create! To watch that happen and watch what God does in and through people as they grow in Him is an unexplainable adventure! We feel so privileged to be a part of it.” — Judy Brown, Facilitator

Taylors FBC wants to challenge and equip you to share the Gospel with those around you. It is the heart of our pastor and staff to see everyone passionate to make more disciples, including those who have not yet called upon the Name of King Jesus. It is our desire to continue to see the Taylors FBC family reach out to others with authenticity, building strong, encouraging relationships with those who do not yet know Christ. One of the many ways we can be more intentional about reaching out to others with the Gospel is to partner with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for a special experience called My HOPE with Billy Graham. My Hope is an intentional outreach challenging all of us to make authentic relationships with those around us and may include witnessing Billy Graham’s last sermon which will be broadcast sometime this November. This date corresponds with Dr. Graham’s ninety-fifth birthday, and is a project that plans to televise his last sermon. We will keep you informed as details develop regarding our partnership with the Billy Graham Association for this special effort and broadcast. More details: www. myhopewithbillygraham.org

Praise the LORD. Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people. Psalm 149:1

The Greatest of These Is Love Mission Trip 2013: New Orleans | Regeneration Student Choir Why take a group of seventy-seven students and adult leaders to the land of swamps, gators, jazz, Cajun food and beignets? Because a pastor said, “We do a free summer camp for our neighborhood kids, and we would love to have you help us.” The focus for our trip was grounded in 1 Corinthians 13:13, and we saw that verse played out every day in the lives of our team members as they shared the promises of God’s Word and showed love to seventy-five day camp children. The children of Gentilly Gardens neighborhood may not remember our names or faces, but we are confident they will remember the love they received and our prayer is that their lives have been changed. " The trip showed me what inner city life is really like and gave me a heart for the people there." Andrew W. " It was such a blessing and joy to see God move through our students but also to see these same students impacted through the sharing of the Gospel." Alison R. " ...a trip full of new friends, life-changing experiences and a wakeup call to how blessed I really am." Haleigh D. " The Lord opened my eyes to how difficult some peoples’ lives are and how blessed I am. He continues to teach me how to love on all types of people." Natalie S. " ...God was working in so many different ways that it became a powerful reminder of who He is and what He wants for us." Tee S. " The New Orleans mission trip taught me the true meaning of unconditional love and expecting nothing in return." Ashley V. " Our students truly stepped out of their comfort zone by loving and witnessing to children who needed to feel the love of God. My heart was blessed by their endurance and commitment to God and His love." Keith P. " It really touched my heart seeing our group love on the children in the name of Jesus!" Lindsey W. 12 | TAYLORSFBC.ORG

WORSHIP MINISTRY Worship is the central focus of a disciple of Jesus. A growing understanding of Who God is, and a regular encounter with Him is the heart of discipleship. The Worship Ministry at Taylors FBC exists to provide opportunities for these encounters between God and His people to happen. Our desire is to be “lead worshipers” before we are “worship leaders.”

Has God given you a desire to see people worship Him “in spirit and in truth?” Has He gifted you in music or technology? Is He calling you to be a part of the Worship Ministry Leadership Team? Check out these numerous opportunities of service. Contact the ministry leader for each area, or simply attend the first rehearsal.

Life Groups: What's With the Name? That's just it. This is the reason we call it Life Groups. We want every group that meets both on and off campus to be a picture and reality of life. Life Groups need to be a place where our people can share life together. As followers of Christ, we need a place to bring our joys, as well as sorrows. We need a place to confess sin and ask hard questions. We need a place to counsel and be counseled. We need a place of no pretense where we can set our worries and anxieties aside and simply be with and grow in the body of Christ. Every group should be centered on the teaching and application of the Word of God and centered on Christ-filled community. Yet in order to see this vision fulfilled, we must model the very qualities we want to see in our Life Group. Be real and share your life with others… Be hungry to know Jesus and make Him known in your world… If you are not involved in a Life Group, there is no better time than now. We all have a great need to be with the people of God and grow in Him together. Join us Sunday mornings at 9 or 10:30 am or Wednesdays at 6:30 pm.

MARRIAGE

Kathy Dority, Minister of Assimilation and Spiritual Care

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a national nonprofit group of family law attorneys working to improve the welfare of the family, cites the top reasons marriages fail are poor communication, financial problems, lack of commitment to the marriage, a dramatic change in priorities, failed expectations or unmet needs, addictions and substance abuse, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, or lack of conflict resolution skills. Sadly, many couples are simply not prepared to work through these issues. Premarital counseling can usually predict with 85% accuracy whether or not a couple will stay together. It can also help prevent the likelihood of divorce by up to 30%! The goal of premarital counseling is to prevent small problems from developing into big problems and to equip couples with the tools to build successful and satisfying marriages. Since we began our marriage mentoring program in 2011, it has been amazing to see God bring so many couples across our path. We have had twenty premarital couples go through the mentoring process. We have also had twelve married couples go through mentoring to enrich their marriage. In September our marriage mentoring team will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, for the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference. They will participate in several workshops related to marriage counseling, mentoring, and enrichment. Pray with us that this trip will be a fruitful time of learning and fellowship so that our team will be better equipped to walk alongside premarital couples and couples in difficult seasons.

Tim & Alison Roller

We enjoyed spending time with such a kind couple that cared about us and wanted to invest in our lives. The Davies gave us a great foundation for beginning our marriage with grace and compassion towards one another by making God the center of our relationship. They were easy to connect with, loving, and always fun to be around. We are truly thankful for their godly leadership and friendship.

We are grateful for everything the Batemans taught us. We appreciated the openness and honesty they had with us. We are always applying the biblical things we were taught during our premarital mentoring to our marriage. We built a relationship with them that extends far beyond just mentoring. No matter what, we can go to them about anything and they will point us to Scripture. God has greatly blessed us with a couple to look up to.

Tim and Alison have been married for eighteen years. They have three daughters, Sarah (15), Hannah (13), and Caroline (10). They love to minister to families and believe that strong families begin with strong marriages. If you are interested in connecting with a mentoring couple, contact kaitlynr@taylorsfbc.org.

Does Membership Matter?

Kathy Dority, Minister of Assimilation and Spiritual Care

In Christ, we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others…The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts and though all its parts are many, they form one body… But in fact, God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be…Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

The answer is YES!

Your membership in the body of Christ matters a great deal to the health of the body as a whole. When you make a commitment to become part of a body of believers such as Taylors FBC, you suddenly belong to the rest of its members. How passionate you are about personally pursuing and growing as a disciple of Christ has a direct impact on the whole body. Ask yourself these questions: • Is God calling you to become part of the body at Taylors? • If so, what do you need to do about it? • If you’re already a member, are you “connected” to the body in biblical community? • Do you know and are you using your spiritual gifts to serve in the body at Taylors?

How to join Taylors: • Come forward during the invitation during each Worship Service • Attend Dinner with the Staff
