December 2018 | January 2019
Dear Taylors First Baptist Church Family, It has been such a joy to be part of this fellowship of believers over the past month. Thank you, again, for how you have received me and my family during this transitional time. We have felt right “at home” and have enjoyed getting to meet so many of you personally. I am desperately trying to learn as many of your names as I can as quickly as I can but, as you can probably imagine, this will take me some time, even if you have told me your name before. Please continue to introduce yourselves to me and bear with me as I try to get your names and faces properly aligned! I am working on it—I promise! I am very grateful for what I am hearing from so many of you about wanting to put the challenges of the past behind you so that we can all focus on moving into the new future that God has placed before us. My spirit resonates with that desire as I continue to believe that there are far more things that unite us than can divide us. Unity is—or should be—the most obvious outward manifestation and hallmark of our faith. As the Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians: I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (Ephesians 4:1-6). As we enter into this special season of Thanksgiving and the celebration of the birth of our Lord, let us remember that a heart of gratitude and a spirit of great joy should characterize our lives, not only as we interact with our brothers and sisters in Christ, but as a lost world that desperately needs to hear—and see—the difference that only Jesus Christ can make. Thank you for letting me share a part of the journey with you. Until ALL nations worship!

This rip-roarin’, down home story begins as a children’s choir has mistakenly chosen a sheep ranch instead of a horse ranch for their Christmas celebration. If you’re a mom who desires to learn scriptural principles to grow in your relationship with your family, join one of our Mom to Mom groups on Wednesday mornings or evenings this winter/spring. Mom to Mom is a biblically based parenting program designed around the Titus 2:4 concept of older women teaching and encouraging younger women. This year’s study is titled Heart Talk on What Really Matters and consists of 12 lessons divided into four parts: My Identity, My Marriage, Parenting Basics Amidst Daily Realities, and My True Power. This study moves from the need to nurture who we are as women to what we do as parents to how we can grow as daughters of God, building firmer spiritual foundations for our families. For information about the morning group, contact Jeanie Eskew at 979-7700. *For information about the evening group, contact Mitsy Ballentine at 430-3043 or Donna Davies at 420-5616 or join us for the Informational Meeting on Wednesday, December 12, 6:30-7:30 pm in C126.

“Mom to Mom is an incredible blessing to me! I am a part-time working mom and part-time stay at home mom, and God has used Mom to Mom to change me. I would not be where I am in my walk with Christ, especially in my new role as a mother, if it were not for this amazing ministry. To be able to sit in a room with other young mothers who are going through the exact same joys, challenges and struggles brings me the comfort in knowing that I am not alone. The ministry has created new, instant friendships, and given me the much needed confidence that I will get through this new journey in parenting! Most importantly, Mom to Mom has allowed me to dig deeper into my walk with Christ. In my group, we find answers in day to day challenges by finding scripture that guides us through the questions and concerns we have as new moms. What is truly beautiful is that we can share stories about our marriages and parenting in a safe and confidential environment. Our Mentor Moms help guide us through each topic with such grace and biblical wisdom! I look forward to continuing to grow in my walk with Jesus Christ while being a stronger mom and wife.” — Lauren Justus

Mental Illness: Up Close and Personal
The year 2011 was challenging to say the least. This was the year I began learning about mental illness up close and personal. That year, one of my very dear friends had a full-blown psychotic break, and I had no idea what was happening to her at that moment. This is someone who walked intimately with God, who was a true follower February 5 – April 23 of Christ, and in whom I had great confidence. And it felt Designed specifically for families with a as though I had lost her – the loved one suffering from mental illness. person I knew so well.

Yes, we should certainly walk with and trust God, Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals through the trials of any illness. But we should also acknowledge that mental illness has a biological component that must be addressed just like any other illness. Please pray with me that God will continue to open our eyes as believers to understand how we, the church, can come alongside those who are suffering from mental health disorders as well as their families. And instead of offering answers to those in crisis, love them with the love of Jesus who came to bind up the broken hearted and set the captives free. He is the one who rescues, He is the one in whom we find peace. — Kathy Dority, Minister of Connections

In years past, Taylors First Baptist has served at the Walmart in Taylors ringing the bell and collecting donations for Salvation Army. Last year a customer placed $100 in the bucket. The Chrismon Tree
Filled with symbolism, the Chrismon Tree paints a portrait of Jesus Christ. Please take a moment to enjoy this special tribute, and observe how each decoration is a sign, type, or combination of figures that proclaim the Name, life, and saving acts of Jesus. The WMU Mission Group began creating our Chrismons in 1985, and today, the WMU Global Mission Group decorates the tree, located in the Welcome Center, as a tribute to our Lord.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE Kathy Tankersley has served with our Guest Services team for over 10 years and currently serves as a “Guide” several Sundays a month. Our Guides greet guests, share information about the church, and assist guests in getting to the appropriate area to drop off children, find a Life Group, and attend worship. Kathy was recently recognized for going the extra mile in taking care of a young family as they dropped off their children. She always greets people with a tremendous smile and warm personality, and we are thankful to have her serve on our team!
