PASTOR'S PAGE The gift-giving season is in full swing.
Wishlist catalogues have arrived in mailboxes at home and in our emails. For some of those whom we love, we don't need to prompt them about making their Christmas list. They are quick and suddenly very knowledgeable about the things they would love to receive. For others, we have to ask and probe. For example, my father, whether for his birthday or Christmas, rarely divulges what he wants. He will always respond with genuine humility, "I've got all I need so there's no need for you to go to the trouble of getting me something. Save your money or spend it on someone else." When I remember my father’s words, I often wonder if that's the way we respond to God when it comes to His gift-giving. Just think of the incredible spiritual riches our Heavenly Father continually offers His children through His goodness and grace. Grace comes in the form of the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God as He helps and comforts, teaches
“
and leads us to forgiveness and cleansing. It comes in the form of the Word of God that shapes our minds and hearts for daily living. It comes in the form of God's leading
My prayer is that you will soften and ready your heart to receive God's grace in fresh, powerful and life-changing ways .

us when we hear and obey Him, providing correction when we are heading the wrong way or direction. It comes in the form of friends and relationships…people God uses to teach, mold and enrich us so we can likewise enrich them. I could go on and on about God's grace, but I wonder if God sees our hearts and minds distracted by so many other things that we are in effect saying, "I've got all I need so there's no need for you to go through the trouble." Our church and all we do, I pray, is a means for you to encounter God and the gifts of His grace. We gather to encounter His presence that is full of grace and truth, we live out His grace as we grow together, and then we share His grace with others. Yet, we pass on what God offers when we mindlessly dismiss or half-heartedly open our lives to God's work through His Spirit, word and body. So, as we enter into the gift-giving season, my prayer is that you will soften and ready your heart to receive God's grace in fresh, powerful and life-changing ways. As you engage with the body of Christ at Taylors, I hope you will not only receive grace but respond to Him with an outpouring of worship and sacrifice with your lives. After all, at Christmas, the Father has poured out to us the greatest gift of all, His Son, and "from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace" (John 1:16). With much love and gratefulness for you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

International Missions Study, 6:30 pm, The Ivory Coast, once the most prosperous of West African nations and considered one of its jewels, is the location of this year’s international missions focus. While still beautiful, this country has become what the United States State Department calls a “developing country,” as it struggles to recover from multiple coups, civil war, and terrorists’ influence. Church planting, evangelism, and discipleship are all ongoing here; however, each is a slow process. Learn how missionaries on the Ivory Coast confront the challenges of overwhelming need in an urban setting. See how they are sharing the story of Jesus where Islam, Catholicism, and tribal relations hold sway over the lives of the people. Wednesdays, January 7-April 8 | 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: $15 | Register at www.taylorsfbc.org/hopenet/grief-support If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before – a time when it’s very difficult to feel hopeful about the future. You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone. GriefShare provides a safe environment with a caring group of people to walk alongside you through the difficult experience of loss. GriefShare meets weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. Most people quickly feel comfortable and accepted in their group. They discover there are others who have the same kind of feelings they do and who understand the hurt they feel and the loss they have experienced. Video seminar with experts Each week your GriefShare group will watch a video seminar featuring top experts on grief and recovery subjects. These videos are produced in an interesting television magazine format
featuring expert interviews, real-life case studies, dramatic re-enactments, and onlocation video. Support group discussion with focus After viewing the video, you and the other group members will spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in the week’s video seminar and what is going on in your own life. Personal study and reflection During the week you will have the opportunity to use a workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to help sort out your emotions through journaling. Your group will spend time discussing questions and comments from the workbook study. It’s sometimes hard to move on in life when you are still dealing with the grief and emptiness that happens after a loved one dies. Through GriefShare you will learn how to go through a healthy season of grieving, then begin transitioning to emotional and spiritual wholeness. It is our hope and prayer that you will discover hope for the future. While things may look bleak now, you will learn ways to restore your hope.

by Doug Mize When you think about leadership what comes to mind? You may picture someone standing up giving a lecture or maybe someone in charge of a group, class, company, or cause. Yet, many times this is an exaggeration of what it means to lead. John Maxwell’s famous definition of leadership is this: "Leadership is influence — nothing more, nothing less." If you have influence, you are leading. The question is not if you are a leader, it is what kind of leadership are you providing? Think of the role of parenting — a mom and dad have the number one leadership responsibility in the lives of their children because of the influence they have over them, for good or bad. You are a leader. When we put leaders too high on a pedestal, we also diminish the responsibility we each have of utilizing our influence, hence our leadership potential, to the benefit of others. Today we all possess a leadership responsibility. We must influence one another for good, and recognize the tragedy of missing an opportunity. For the Christian, we must fulfill the plan of the writer of Proverbs when he says: As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV).
Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24
Leadership is a sharpening — a sharpening that happens in relationship. So what relationships are you involved in today? Imagine viewing them as an opportunity to influence others for Christ. Jesus welcomes relationships for the purpose of His Glory. What a privilege it is! The author of Hebrews encouraged us in this way: And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24 (NIV). This is true influence and true leadership. So here is the challenge to leaders: How does God want to use you through your influence and leadership to encourage others to love and follow Christ? Quit shirking the responsibility of leadership by thinking you are not qualified and begin asking God this question: “Who is it that I can influence for Christ today?” You have influence, use it to glorify our deserving Savior.

God Has Been Gracious to Us, Blessed Us, and
caused His face to shine upon us! In November, Taylors FBC had the opportunity to host twenty-two amazing missionaries who serve within our nation and among all nations at our Side by Side Missions Conference. They ranged in age from twentyfour to seventy-two, and each had an amazing story. Many of you heard their stories as they joined you for the WMU/XYZ lunches, for House Church with students, as well as during the banquet and in each of our Life Groups. It was an incredible weekend that culminated in a service of dedication. Many stepped forward to say they are willing to pray and let God direct their steps to pack a bag in 2015 to join Him in His mission. Some of you said God was stirring in your heart to pack your home and have begun the process of seeking God’s direction for the next step. We received over 150 cards and emails of commitment and that is only a work of the Holy Spirit! What a desire He has put within us, His church, that we should say, “Use me! Pour me out, that Your way may be known on earth, Your name may be praised and the nations sing for joy.” Thank you Taylors FBC for being a gracious host and a light in the midst of darkness!

Underground Church: The year is 2014. You are desperately seeking an
underground church while being chased by police, determining who to trust, and seeking clues to aid you. No, this isn’t a foreign country, but our students engaged in a game that exposed them to what life might be like for missionaries around the world. Students heard testimony from missionaries living in these dangerous places. They discovered that believers face true persecution for sharing Christ. They were also impacted by worship of 125 voices singing the great and powerful name of Christ. This was a challenging night where students learned to stand up for Christ in their schools and throughout the world! <<
Preschool Praise: We were grateful for The “H” family who came to share during Preschool Praise about their life in a foreign country. When the “H” family entered The Orange Room, they spoke in the language of the people they serve. The children looked very confused, yet in awe. One five year old said… "Don't you know we don't understand Spanish!" Everyone laughed and the “H's” began to speak in English. It was amazing to see preschoolers listen to how this ordinary family packed their home and moved to a country about which they knew nothing. Mr. “H” reminded the children that whatever we love to do, we can share Jesus while we are doing it. Each child took home a Prayer Card with the guests’ photo to remind them to pray for this family. After church many children would not allow their parents to even hold the card! They tightly held onto them like a treasure. Several families have shared about their preschooler asking more about foreign missions and the sports ministry the “H” family uses to share the gospel. Pray that seeds planted will grow as they seek to know God and live for Him.

You can’t do ministry without people. One of those people is Bekah Brewer. She has served countless hours this year as a North American Mission Board semester missionary at Taylors with a focus on Baptist Collegiate Ministry at Furman. Besides helping Ryan Brooks, Minister of College and Young Singles, with many of the behind-the-scenes preparations, Bekah has greatly impacted the lives of many young adult women and their journey with Christ. She has engaged weekly with many church members while volunteering in the Taylors Rec Center. As a church we are thankful for her passion to see college students at Furman and Taylors come to know Christ and make Him known!
