November 2018

Dear Taylors First Baptist Church Family! I want to thank you for the warm welcome you have extended to me and my family as we begin this transitional period together. I am both humbled and honored to have been asked to serve as your interim pastor. Many other men could have ably filled this position and likely done a far better job! I have to admit that I was more than a little nervous and even intimidated by the thought of this because I well know the rich heritage of this great church and the caliber of the pastors who have stood in its pulpit. However, as I was seeking God’s guidance and praying for His direction concerning whether or not to step into this role, God spoke very clearly and powerfully to me from Ephesians 3, and I want to share those verses with you: Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given to me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the nations the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known. Ephesians 3:7-10 I realized again, as I read these verses, that this is what God called me to do many years ago when he first called me into full-time ministry. Since then, God has led me and my family on an amazing journey that has taken us even to the remotest parts of the earth. No matter where we have served, however, the call of God has been the same—to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ and to make the manifold wisdom of God known through His Church. To that great end and with a commitment to that great purpose, I pledge to you that I will give my very best to the Lord and to His people as we begin this time together. I trust that your hearts’ desire is to do the same. Thank you again for the privilege of walking with you during these days. I look forward to the journey! Until ALL nations worship!

Welcome Dr. Allen McWhite Dr. D. Allen McWhite, Sr. will be our Interim Pastor, preaching, teaching, and guiding us until the time that we call our next Senior Pastor. Dr. McWhite is a pastor, former IMB missionary, and is on the faculty at North Greenville University where he serves as Executive Director of the Institute for Global Leadership and Professor of Intercultural Studies. For more than fifteen years, Dr. McWhite has led multiple churches through interim periods and comes highly Allen and Ruth McWhtie with their Family recommended by the churches he has served in that capacity. He is married to Ruth Waters McWhite, and they have five children, four of whom are local. Their son, David, is a missionary in Ireland. We love Allen’s heart for the local church, his love for preaching the Word, and his desire to help churches be prepared when God calls new pastoral leadership.

Dr. David Horner

The Interim Pulpit Committee is equally excited that we will be engaging Dr. David Horner as a Transitional Consultant to help us in the areas of church priorities, health, and vision for the future. Equipped for Life is a ministry begun by David and his wife, Cathy, for the purpose of providing leadership to churches and pastors in transition. Dr. Horner will talk with staff, lay leaders, and various generations and affinity groups within the congregation to listen, evaluate, and foster unity and healing among all the people who make Taylors such a unique body. Dr. Horner’s work will be from November through January.

Orphan Sunday is November 11 On November 11, we will take time in our service to observe Orphan Sunday, an annual day for churches to shed light on the many orphans in need all around the world. With November being National Adoption Awareness Month, we are reminded of God’s call on our lives to care for the “orphans in their distress” (James 1:27). We, as a church, will come together to raise awareness on this day; but the reality we are faced with is that for these children, their situation is something they live with every single day of their lives. You may not personally feel the call on your life to foster or adopt, but there are many ways to still be involved through our foster care ministry, Mission 1:27. Through this ministry you will have the opportunity to get involved and connect with those who share the same heart for the fatherless. Ways you can get involved through Mission 1:27: • Prayer • Donations to Foster Closet for Boys and Girls - 4T, 5T, and 6T long sleeve shirts and pants - new underwear, 3T to 14/16 - new socks in all sizes - new toothbrush/toothpaste sets, toddlers to adults • Volunteer to serve at the Greenville County Foster Parent Association Christmas Party. We need a group to set up, a group to volunteer, and a group to tear down. • Participate in our Wednesday Night course, Families by Grace, and learn more about how to serve, and provide practical help such as meals for families who are fostering.

Jesus is our Savior –

He came in humility to rescue fallen man and to provide a way for us to be redeemed from our sinful condition;

He is our King —

He rules and reigns over the hearts of His people, and one day every nation, tribe, and tongue will bow before Him as King of kings.

Through the telling of the story, Bailey Catherine, one lost and lonely child, finds the best Christmas gift ever ... Jesus. Childcare Available for Children Up to Age 5

THE CHRISTMAS STORE December 3-8 in Partnership with Community Mission Baptist Church

Donate Items Now through December 3 The Christmas Store is located in a low income neighborhood one mile from Taylors FBC and is operated in partnership with the Community Mission Baptist Church. Instead of directly giving gifts to kids, the Christmas Store aims to provide a way for low income parents to purchase, at a discounted rate, the types of quality gifts that would be beyond what a low income parent may be able to purchase on their own. It raises the dignity of the families and provides the mechanism for leaders of CMBC to connect with those families to serve and reach them for Christ. This Christmas will be the fifth consecutive year that members of Taylors FBC have supported the Christmas Store. The store will operate one week beginning on December 3. Here are ways that you can help: • Pray for the Christmas Store and all the families. • Donate (unwrapped with price tags on) new toys, clothing, sporting items, electronics, etc. for infants, young children and teens. Include gift wrapping supplies if possible and bring items to the Connection Center through December 3. • Donate money or gift cards to purchase new toys and clothes. Mark check “Christmas Store” and mail by December 1 to: Community Mission Baptist Church, 1950 Boling Road Ext., Taylors, SC 29687 • Assist with set up or serve in the store — contact Earline Gatewood at 864-901-2561. If you have any questions about a partnership with the Community Mission Baptist Church Christmas Store, please contact Ed Rambo at 843-834-0390 or ewrambo@att.net.

SINGLE MOM’S OIL CHANGE December 1, 2018

Three times a year, Taylors FBC volunteers rally to change oil and provide food and fellowship for single moms in our community. One typical oil change brings in as many as 120 women who line up hours early to be sure their car is serviced. Volunteers assist outside with various facets of the oil change, while volunteers inside serve breakfast, play with children, and pray for women in need. In 2018, two prayer rooms were added to provide a quieter place to talk and pray with women, many of whom leave encouraged by our faithful prayer warriors. Over time, we have broadened the ministry to include opportunities for women to request home repairs, employment coaching, employment training, and additional prayer. A tremendous thanks goes out to Cal Moreland, Warren Smith, and Kim Thomas, who all lead the oil change along with our many faithful volunteers who serve during the year. MEET JACKIE DENDY, a friend whose life has been touched by Single Mom’s Oil Change. Jackie has suffered through many health issues for the last few years, but she approaches those issues with tremendous faith and a wonderful attitude. She says, “I’ve had a lot of trouble, but even when the trouble comes, I know God will always send a rainbow at the end."

The Little Vessel

by Leighanne Clifton A modern-day parable, this is perfect for reading to children; however, following the story are several questions designed to help the more mature reader (tweens, teens, and adults) delve deeper into God’s word. Drawing parallels with the little vessel’s experiences, the questions encourage consideration of how God is working in the reader’s life to accomplish His will.

The Love Letter by Rachel Hauck

Set in upcountry South Carolina, this is a beautifully crafted story of the courage it takes to face down fear and chase after love, even in the darkest of times. And just maybe, all these generations later, love can come home in a way not even Hollywood could imagine.

When God’s Ways Make No Sense by Dr. Larry Crabb It doesn’t take too much living before we realize that life never goes quite the way we want it to. But when things get hard and we don’t understand what God is doing, what is our first impulse? Is it to resist Him and run? Or is it to trust Him even as we tremble in fear?

Just for Today

By Lin Cunningham and Marsha Sharp

Ministry to the women of Just for Today has reminded us of two important principles in our personal spiritual journeys: 1) You cannot out give our mighty God! What began as our giving and ministering to others has actually become the gift of joy we receive in seeing lives set free from dependence to freedom and new life by faith in Christ. 2) We have been blessed by God's grace and equipped to do His good works, and that grace compels us to minister to the less fortunate among us. If it were not for God's grace, our paths could be reversed. Just for Today (owned and operated by Cassandra Brayboy) consists of four recovery houses for women, three which are located within a couple of miles of Taylors FBC. Our ministry team builds relationships and walks alongside the residents in their recovery journey by providing a monthly breakfast, Bible studies, Christmas luncheon, one on one mentoring, prayer, and provision for practical needs.

Boston REACH Trip Our 2018 Boston REACH team helped Encounter Church with two community days, Dedham Day and Westwood Day. Here is a testimony from one of the team members, Louise Rogers, who had a chance to minister at both events and even during one of her travel days: “It has been a joy to visit Encounter Church several times during its early years. To see the “plant” grow and mature and to experience the church’s contagious enthusiasm first hand has been a privilege. Our team prayed to be Jesus’ hands and feet and to have His heart for everyone we met. On Westwood Day, I cleaned and cleared food tables, using every opportunity to tell about Encounter. During Dedham Day, I worked alongside church members, Richmond and Fred, at Encounter’s booth, blowing up and giving out hundreds of balloons and information about Encounter Church. A final God gift came through a chance meeting (No! It was a God ordained meeting!). I struck up a conversation with a gentleman seated across from me at the Newark airport. He was wearing a clerical collared shirt, so I asked if he was a pastor. He replied that he is a bishop from the Congo here for a United Nations meeting. I asked if I could pray for him so right then and there I put my hand on his shoulder and asked God to give him wisdom and courage and to provide for his needs. As I walked away, I said to him that I would see him again, although it may be a while. He said, ‘You will come to the Congo!’ I responded, ‘Probably not, but I will see you in Heaven!’” –Louise Rogers

REACH Offering

Thank you so much to those who have sacrificially given to our REACH Offering in an effort to support our members to Go and ENGAGE our nation and the nations with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through your giving on REACH Day and throughout this past year, we have almost reached our goal of $150,000 and are happy to announce that we anticipate providing a 50% scholarship for every Taylors member who joins one of our REACH teams in 2019. Through this announcement, we are stepping out in faith that the Lord will provide the rest of the dollars that we need in order to confidently provide this scholarship. We are asking that you prayerfully consider what God may be calling you to do over the next two months, whether that be to give so that someone else may Go or that you may Go yourself!
