October/November 2014 Taylors Family

PASTOR'S PAGE It's late at night. The car is unloaded but the suitcases are still piled up on the floor in the bedroom while other bags lay around the kitchen and in the hallways. We've just returned from a family vacation and everyone is tired and headed to bed. But somehow I've got the desire and the energy to scroll through the pictures taken throughout the week. There's a sense of wanting to be reminded of what took place, how fun and how important it was to be with family. After hearing from many of you, there was that same sense of wanting to look back at the pictures of our remarkable 150th Anniversary season throughout its final days and into the Monday after we concluded our celebration. I'm not referring to the actual photos -- although seeing some of your outfits and hairdos "back in the day" was so much fun. I'm referring to what God did throughout the days of our celebration. I'm referring to the images you will take with you from the worship services and community times on campus, the speakers and former pastors and staff members who returned, and of course the life change witnessed in our student rally and outdoor baptism. Yet, as we look back, I'm reminded that the images and pictures don't happen without the investment, sacrifice and disciple-making of the people with the great outfits and stylish hairdos from the past. In fact, when you study the Taylors history books, you will find families, people and pastors who passed the mantle of disciple-making to the next generation and the next. Just look at one of the few images we have of Alfred Taylor. He is sitting on a bench teaching the future generations of what would become Taylors First Baptist.

Reaching and teaching the next generation and the next is not just the calling of Alfred Taylor. It doesn't belong exclusively to him or to those of us who see God working because of His calling. It's the calling of Jesus from the time He left the eleven disciples telling them to go and make disciples of all people everywhere (Matthew 28:18-20). So, throughout this newsletter, you will find the opportunities available for you to be discipled by Jesus so that others may be discipled by Him too. And as you read -- and as we begin Year 151, keep in mind those individuals at a celebration to come who will scroll through the pictures, peruse the newsletters and be thankful that a people passed on what had been given to them. It's been a great celebration season. Now let's go and make more and more disciples in the days ahead.

Week of Prayer for

The Griffin Family Ruth, Ed, Tim, Dan, Phil, Clarence

T-H-A-N-K-S Six small letters cannot begin to express the ocean of gratitude we feel for all Taylors FBC has meant to us as Southern Baptist Missionaries. Even a thousand expressions of “thank-you” would not be enough to acknowledge our appreciation for your welcoming us home from our mission field in Java, Indonesia FIVE times from 1980 – 1996. You provided a comfortable, furnished home with stocked pantry and filled refrigerator. Specifically we thank Phil Hargrove and all who serve on the Missionary Housing Committee Thousands of you including Wes Neely, Harold and Martha Lewis, Gilbert Rivers, Fred and Judy Brown, Jim and prayed for us and gave Gloria Stovall, Dot Williams and others. to the Cooperative Absolutely nobody does missions like WMU. We salute leaders such as Doris Alewine, Rubye Cochran, Ruth Ashmore, Ella Flack, Esterine Hargrove, Martha Lewis, Delores Stansell and others for their faithfulness in supporting us with prayer, letters, gifts and words of encouragement.

Program and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to sustain and support us for thirtysix years overseas.

During most furloughs, Dr. and Mrs. Carswell and staff including Mich Riddle, Lucy Watson and Peggy Bell ministered faithfully to us along with the Maintenance personnel. We value the friendships of our neighbors who surrounded the missionary house that once existed in the current parking lot. Thousands of you prayed for us and gave to the Cooperative Program and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to sustain and support us for thirty-six years overseas. Our four sons still talk about the fun of living here with the skate-board friendly parking lot, gym in the back yard and the train whistles! Each furlough you overwhelmed us with kindness! Once Cleland and Nell Reed lent us a car, Phyllis Altenbern and Jerri Carswell updated Ruth’s wardrobe, Frances Barnette, baby Bethany and many more stopped by to welcome us home, and Dr. & Mrs. Carswell made time for dinner at the Dragon Den. Russell and Ruth Ashmore gave an electric generator for our son’s overseas Lottie Moon home, and more acts of service than we can express took care of all of our needs. You continued to support two of our sons and their wives, Phil and Julie, (1993 – 2011) and Tim and Jill, (2000 – 2002) as they ministered through the IMB. The thanks continue during this retirement phase when every member of our larger family has been blessed by ALL the ministries of Taylors. You will never know what your love has meant to us. Our pastors, Dr. Page and Pastor Paul along with their wives and staff mean so very much to us. To God be the glory. Thanks to you, Taylors First Baptist Church!

International Missions and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34 This is the watchword for WMU during the 2014-2015 year. Our theme is All for You: surrender, sacrifice, serve. According to the IMB, your gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering have enabled these incredible results: 114,571 souls baptized and 6,192 churches started in 2013! Taylors FBC is fifty-second in giving to LMOC. The top 200 churches gave $34.6 million or 22% of the total for last year. There is joy and freedom to be found when we give everything to God. Please give generously to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

International Missions Study

December 3, 6:30 pm, Fellowship Hall Dinner begins at 5:15 pm The Ivory Coast, once the most prosperous of West African nations and considered one of its jewels, is the location of this year’s international missions focus. While still beautiful, this country has become what the United States State Department calls a “developing country,” as it struggles to recover from multiple coups, civil war, and terrorists’ influence. Church planting, evangelism, and discipleship are all ongoing here; however, each is a slow process. Learn how missionaries on the Ivory Coast confront the challenges of overwhelming need in an urban setting. See how they are sharing the story of Jesus where Islam, Catholicism, and tribal relations hold sway over the lives of the people. Please join us as Greg Queen leads us in a study about the Ivory Coast.

International Missions Night

December 10, 6:30 pm Fellowship Hall Dinner begins at 5:15 pm Please bring your family and join us for a special night featuring food representative of that found in the Ivory Coast. After dinner, you will be blessed by hearing Joe Dillon from the International Mission Board share with us.

Employment Coaching Ministry "For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Year 2007 People in Need

The years of 2007-2009 are called by many Americans “The Great Recession.” This recession began with the bursting of an eight trillion dollar housing bubble resulting in financial market chaos, a collapse in business investment, and massive job loss. In 2008 and 2009, the U.S. labor market lost 8.4 million jobs, or 6.1% of all payroll employment. This was the most dramatic employment contraction (by far) of any recession since the Great Depression.

Year 2009 Our Response

In February of 2009, Taylors FBC responded to God’s leading to meet needs in our own community and body by forming the Employment Support Ministry (ESM) to walk alongside of people suffering from job loss. Leaders, Ron Phelps and Paul Barber, put together a team of skilled and passionate leaders who developed and served in the ministry that has now met twice a month for nearly six years and has had tremendous success in serving over 1000 people in our community! Thank you!

Year 2014 Responding to Change

A dramatic drop in the unemployment rate has led ESM leadership team to reevaluate the ministry and transition into an Employment Coaching Ministry that we believe will better respond to the current job market and will enhance the effectiveness of the ministry. We praise God for the many lives that have been touched through ESM and anticipate His continued work through our new ministry format.

FROM AMONG THE THOUSAND MINISTERED TO BY EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT MINISTRY

“I want to congratulate you and your Team on your work in ESM. It was truly a blessing to so many, yours truly included, at a time when it was needed most. Thank you for your leadership, wisdom and encouragement. You have modeled the principles of Servant Leadership and have inspired me to do the same. To God be Praise and Glory for ESM, but a Big Thank You is due you, Ron and your Team.”

“As a relatively new recipient of the collective efforts of so many people I want to thank all of you. Personally and professionally you have been exemplary of servant-leadership. Many forprofit organizations could learn from what you put together.” “Paul and Ron, the Lord spoke and you listened. What you have done in these past years is a testament to your faith. You all touched so many lives for the better, mine included."

Orphan Sunday November 2 What is Orphan Sunday?

Each November, thousands of Christians across America and around the globe join together in supporting a single goal: that God’s great love for the orphan will find echo in our lives as well. Orphan Sunday is our opportunity as a church to rouse believers with God’s call to care for the orphan. Be sure to join as we celebrate families in our church who have responded to God’s call!

How is Taylors FBC responding to God’s call to care for orphans? Mission 1:27 - Hope for the Fatherless!

My Taylors Story Began

one December Sunday night in 1987 on the back row at a Christmas service where I met my in-laws for the first time. Of course, having just been dating their son for a couple of weeks, I didn’t know it at the time, but they and Taylors FBC would soon become a part of my identity. As our relationship grew, we soon became engaged and joined an engaged couples’ class. This group, along with a feisty women’s basketball team, were my first connecting points at Taylors. We learned much about God’s design for marriage, and the people here welcomed me, a “Greer Girl,” into their fold.

Kim Keller

Throughout the years we have been at Taylors, the members have been Jesus in my life and in the lives of my family. They have taken care of my children from the sweet rocking chairs to the baptistery, prayed my husband through a life-threatening illness and military deployment, wrapped their arms around us and prayed for restoration through family crisis, and taught me the trustworthiness of the One Who loves us unconditionally.

In reading the history of the beginning of Taylors FBC in a war torn country and disillusioned community, I was struck by how our church today carries on that same mission…reaching out, taking in, offering hope, and making the name of Jesus known.

“The Cure”For Parents

We thought we were cured but most of us unwittingly carried an old, dead outlook into our new life. We couldn’t measure up to a standard we created, so we convinced ourselves it was God’s. Taylors Children’s Choirs Begin Wednesday, October 1, 6:15 pm For 1st-5th Grades begin

This Christmas the Taylors Children’s Choirs will present Fact or Fiction, The Christmas Edition. The story line for this musical centers around teams from two elementary schools that have made it to the final night of competition in the town’s annual game show, Fact or Fiction. The game show is the community’s way of making sure the children know the TRUE facts of Christmas. The winning team is awarded a Christmas Dinner Basket for every family in their school. Fact of Fiction teaches the importance of knowing God’s Word, the importance of applying God’s Word in our lives, and the forgiveness God offers each of us through His Son, Jesus.

In Isaiah 6 we find a compelling picture of worship initiated by God with the prophet, Isaiah. This encounter shows us that worship is a rhythm of revelation and response. When we see something magnificent (revelation), we reply in adoration and praise (response). Come and worship together in this church wide experience Come ready to explore new methods of response as God is revealed through Scripture.

Taylors FBC Welcomes New Minister Kendylmae Jann

Joined September 7 by Baptism

Dustin Dozier joins the Taylors Students team as a Minister to Students. Not growing up in a Christian home, Dustin was invited by friends to a church lockin where he heard the gospel for the first time. After several months of searching for the purpose of life, Dustin realized at the age of fourteen that Jesus was the only purpose. Shortly after surrendering his life to Christ, he knew that God’s call was to work with students. He graduated from Kennesaw State University, with a B.A. in Business Management, a Masters of Theological Studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has served as a student pastor at growing churches in Georgia and Tennessee. He is passionate about reaching others who don’t know Jesus and connecting students to pursuing Christ as their greatest passion.

Dustin and his wife Sloan, a native of the Greenville area, have been married for almost ten years and have adopted three handsome boys from foster care: Zion, Triumphant, and Noah.

Fall Kick-Off

Featuring Tierce Green Thursday, October 30, 7-8:30 pm Fellowship Hall | Brick Street Café Dessert

Make plans to join us as we welcome special guest, Tierce Green, and unveil new plans to help us as Taylors Men to connect with God and band together to take the higher ground. Tierce Green is one of today's most effective communicators of biblical truth, helping people understand their identity in Christ and discover their purpose in the world. His goal is to lead people beyond an event into a healthy pattern of spiritual growth and daily devotion to God. Tierce is Pastor of House Churches at Church Project in The Woodlands, Texas, where his primary role is to call men up and equip them to lead and care for people. Among his many credentials, he taught the principles of authentic manhood to over a thousand men each week over a seven-year period in a seasonal gathering called The Quest.
