YOUR SQUARE ISSUE 9 2017

Your Square/Centre Information

WELCOME WELCOME TO THE SWINTON SQUARE SUMMER! Welcome to Your Square where we welcome new tenants The Little Sewing Shop (in the old Mickey the Mixer unit). This month our shop focus is on Martin’s who have been baking in the Manchester area for longer than most people would care to remember but who have been in the Square for an impressive 22 years. In June we had another of our popular ‘Let’s Get Active’ days, a fun-filled event with activities for the whole fam-

ily including the Climbing wall, Bungee Tramps and the Neo Wall, a great highlight again this year was the Zippy Zappy pot workshop, where the painting theme was appropriately changed to the “Manchester Bee” at short notice. As events go it seems that the recent hot weather has got us thinking about Summer and once again we will be welcoming BBC’s Mr Bloom back for our ‘Garden In The Square’ event. The friendly gardener is a popular face in

the Square with both kids and mums and he will be bringing his ‘Veggies’ back for another outing on August 12th along with the Key 103 roadshow and the very popular ‘Trolls Show’. More about that and other great events later in the issue, in the meantime we look forward to seeing you all down here in Swinton Square and don’t forget to bring along all the vouchers in the back of this issue for some great savings.

e are delighted to welcome The Little Sewing Shop to the Square, which is situated in the old Micky the Mix unit. We spoke to Janet, the proprietor before the shop opened and she explained her plan: “I’m going to be offering an alteration service as well as dress making and I‘m looking to specialise in children’s bespoke special occasion wear. But I can do dress making to order, bridesmaids, a hemming service, curtains and cushion covers. I’m also thinking of offering an ironing service and selling designer, second-hand clothing.” As we went to press Janet had just opened and said she was “inundated with work” Sounds good!

Your Square/Centre News

SPRING IN THE SQUARE Let’s not tempt fate but since Christmas 2015 we’ve been quite lucky with the weather when it comes to our big events. This year’s Spring in the Square might have been a but nippy but it was dry and plenty of families came along for a full day of entertainment and fun. We had pot painting and Punch & Judy running throughout the day as well as stage appearances from The Minions, The Frozen Show, Trolls and singer/guitarist Roy Bennett. We also had a Princess Parade around the Square and a Superhero Parade led by Batman.

LET’S GET ACTIVE Let’s Get Active event brought plenty of adventurous kids to Swinton Square. All the favourites were back: the bungee trampolines, the climbing wall, the giant slide, the NeoWall and the Cannonball Shootout. When it came to time to get your breath back there was also pot painting (with a Manchester Bee theme) and face painting.

CAROL ROBERTS MARTINS

to order. I say to the girls, it doesn’t matter if you ask them five times - do they want butter? Do they want onions? - just make sure they leave the shop with exactly what they came in for. You have some adventurous varieties of bread on your shelves too... Yes, especially at the weekend we offer artisan loaves like the sourdough. Richard Martin opened his first Swiss confectionery bakery in Moston on Easter Sunday, 1922. Born of a Swiss family, his origins were more Berne than barm but the shop was an almost instant success. When ingredients were in short supply during World War II the family decided to focus on bread products and the bakery began to resemble the company we know today. Martin’s has stayed in the family, with the fifth generation of the family now involved with the business. The shop in Swinton Square has been here for 22 years and is managed by Carol Roberts, herself a long-serving member of the company...

ing there who’ve never worked for us before.

How long have you worked for Martins? I’ve worked here in this unit for almost 20 years. I started as a parttime shop assistant, then assistant manager and I’ve been a manager for about 11 years. These days I get around to other shops too but this is my base.

There’s confusion amongst the public about bakeries not keeping pies and pasties hot, once they’re out of the oven.. Yes, it’s down to VAT but what we do is bake little and often. So while one batch is cooling down we have another batch in the oven. They only take 10-15 minutes, so we don’t get a lot of complaints about that. And everything is fresh every day, we don’t keep anything over.

Martins is a very Manchester-based company, how many shops are there? There are 26 shops now. We opened the 26th in Urmston last month. I’ve been there helping out with training because there are a few people work-

4

Where is the operational centre of Martins? The main bakery is in Newton Heath and the bread arrives at the stores early in the morning. On a normal working day I arrive just before 7am and the driver is just leaving. So the bread is baked there, what about the pies? Pies and pasties arrive here uncooked and we bake them on the premises. Things like baguettes that are used for sandwiches come in part-baked and are finished off in-store.

Sandwiches are a big part of your business, are they pre-made? No, we have a Sandwich of the Day but other than that, they are made

You offer celebration cakes, how does that work? People fill a form out, explaining exactly what they want and that gets sent to the bakery. What sort of turn around is there on that? If it’s a small cake then if you asked for it this morning, I could get it to you for the day after. If it’s a large one I’d call the bakery and speak to the cake deck - it might still be possible to get it the next day if someone’s desperate. You sell soups too? Yes, they’re really popular. We offer two a day - today they are Pea & Ham and Ham & Sweetcorn - they are really good though, great quality. And you’re now selling top quality coffee... Yes, we’ve got a brand new coffee machine that’s proving really popular - especially with the offers we’re running on them at the moment. Speaking of offers, you have deals that change every month... Yes, on the first on the month we announce the new offers, things like four sausage rolls for the price of three. Pop in and check them out.
