1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE A place to lie down, sit up, stand and walk. “Drawing is taking a line for a walk“ -- Paul Klee

Federation Square The surface of Federation Square are formed by pieces of triangles. By looking at the facade, it can be found, in fact, it combined the three elements - Points, Line and Plane. It starts from a point and lines direct in any directions. A large number of intersecting lines can form plane infilling them. Pieces of lines in different directions provide opportunity to bend planes. Therefore, I got inspiration from its surface that 3D structure can be formed from sense of 2D.

At first, I tried to create a 2D drawing in my brain. Drawing can be started from a point which can extend to pieces of lines. When you look at my model from the top, it is like a 2D dwawing. The connection between point, line and plane is clear.

In terms of spatial experience, I tried to use lines to lead the way of changing space from openness to semi-privacy. Besides, I also use lines as columns to replace a plane in order to create the contrast between positive and negative space.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL View of the sky, vire of the horizon, view of the ground.

Katsura Detached Palace Built in 16th - 17th

This is a traditional Japanese House. The frame is viewed to be constructed simply verticle and horizontal elements. While the interior plan of the house is flexible as a result of tatami as modular and sliding doors being used to change spaces inside.

Generally, frame is a permanent structure which can not move, while infill is a temporary element that can be movable. Japanese traditional house is a good example. At first, the frame I designed is intersected by a range of rectangular blocks with different dimensions. Therefore, the frame created a lot of intersecting spaces. I utilised solid forms and sheets as infills to create spaces inside. At the ground level, people can go into this pavilion structure from any directions, while all the spaces direct people to the upper level. At the upper level, there is a highest column in the middle of structure which finally directs the view from people to sky.

1.3 MASS Solid and Void; Darkness and Light; Touch and See “When it comes to exvated ground, dreams have no limit.“ -- Gaston Bachelard

Bruder Klaus Field Champel Peter Zumthor

The concept of this concrete chapel is to design a building with a sensuous connection to life. It experiments with light and forming material into an amazing shape. The interior gives me a sense of mystical and privacy. Inspired by this precedent, I made attempt to create a space that can relate to human’s feeling like this concrete chapel.

It is because of mass always give us a sense of solid and static. However, learning from Bruder Klaus Field Chapel, I got the concept of breathing by the contrast between lightness and darkness.

http://www.portlandart.net/archives/2011/02/ishimoto_yasahi.html It is really useful for me to start from elements study at the beginning of 8 weeks. In process of precedent studies, I learnt how to analyse and apply them to my designs. Additionally, I found all these elements can be utilised in my final project, especially mass and frame & infill. In terms of final project, I learnt how to connect all the information including site analysis, diagram analysis and architectural drawing with my concept. The architectural drawings plays an important role in visual presentation. Besides, I met some difficulties to transport my idea in digital model and physical model. I found it hard for me to make a model as I imagined because of poor skills in using computer.
