Fall 2017 - The Album

Greetings! Just the other day, the first of The Buffalo News & M&T Bank present Icons: The Makers and Moments of Buffalo Sports label copy hit my desk for content review. Reading ‘iconic moments’ and ‘iconic players’ sections prompted a flood of memories. I suppose it was the first time I really reconciled the Bills playoff drought.

Super Bowl XXV was my senior year of high school. I vividly remember watching the game with all my friends on a relatively small TV (by today’s game day standards) in the family room of my best friend. I confidently made an unfortunate bet with a high school crush and rabid Giants fan. Well, we know that did not end well for me. To honor my losing bet, I had to schlep his books for an agreed amount of time, to say nothing of listening to his incessant recounting of the ‘wide right’ kick. Well, one thing we know about our sports fans and our

From the earliest stories of local professional sports to those of the iconic moments and players generated in our community survey last year, Icons evoked nostalgia.

Icons promises to be a distinctive history exhibit that touches Buffalo’s citizenry of all ages. It will allow friends to relive magical moments at a game, families to once again cheer for their favorite players, and parents to introduce their children to some of the greatest moments in Western New York’s history and the impact sports has on our community. While I am super excited to experience history with guests in the dynamic Icons exhibit, it is also energizing to see our Icon-ic building enthusiastically filled with the community’s collected memories. history, we are a hearty and devoted lot. That fall I headed off to SUNY Oswego and a ‘Bruuuuuuce’ Smith poster was a feature of my heavily papered dorm walls. I had no idea three more Super Bowls were in our immediate future; but, I sure was hopeful.

A World War One Centennial Exhibition - On view until April 2019 -

Since the time of the Civil War, baseball has played an important role in Buffalo, New York. Though most of the area’s baseball pioneers, including Ollie Carnegie and Luke Easter, are gone, they live on in the memories of fans, and some of their names have even graced the facades of facilities, like Offermann Stadium. In this book author, Paul Langendorfer and The Buffalo History Museum have included each inning of the Queen City’s rich baseball heritage, from the 19th-century Niagaras and the 1913–1915 Federal League to the Buffalo Bisons. You can find Baseball in Buffalo now in the Museum Shop!

for me, was listening to the radio call of the Sabres during the October Storm in 2006. I sat in front of the fireplace at my father’s house and listened on an old battery powered radio as Buffalo beat Detroit in a shootout. I remember creating a visual in my head of each play and almost preferring it to a television broadcast. In the decade since that game, I’ve recounted it time and time again as my friends trade stories.

Anthony Greco Director of Exhibits & Interpretive Planning With fall crisping the air, the museum is gearing up for the opening of our next exhibit, Icons: The Makers & Moments of Buffalo Sports. Opening on M&T Third Friday, November 17, Icons takes a look into Western New York’s professional sports history, honoring the area’s most notable athletes, owners, moments, and venues. The subject of local sports is a departure from our recent topics, such as the War of 1812, Quilting, and World War I. However, given our community’s unwavering support of its teams, we anticipate this exhibit to be well received by our guests. We’re especially proud that the content of the exhibit that was driven by a survey in which hundreds of community members participated. This front-end research identified the sports stories that resonated the most with people. In everything we do, I believe that creating emotional connections with the stories we tell is among the most important. These connections happen every day here, among intergenerational families and complete strangers alike. The objects we choose to include spark the opportunity for exchange. Sports, for so many of us, connect us to others who share a common memory of a game, person, or moment. Often, these become the “where were you when…?” starters upon which so many casual conversations are built. One of these moments,

These are the memories that a jersey on a wall can bring to the forefront. This is what I want Icons to be. The exhibit will contain the stories of Western New York’s greatest athletes, most unforgettable moments, and most beloved venues. More than 150 unique objects will illuminate these stories along with custom designed interactive features. To develop Icons, the museum has paired with Hadley Exhibits and Cortina Productions, two of the nation’s top exhibit design companies. Together, we’ve created a one-of-a-kind experience that reflects the incredible bond our community shares with its professional franchises. Coordinating this project has been a truly special experience. Each day, it seems, I’m approached or receive a call from someone asking about the exhibit or if they can, in some way contribute. Photographers have contributed images, collectors have offered loans, and families have shared their stories. Throughout Icons’ five-year run, we’ll feature many of these stories. The first will be the Buffalo Beauts, our city’s female professional hockey team. The Beauts won the NWHL’s Isobel Cup championship in 2017 after a hard fought match against the Boston Pride. It’s a story that everyone should know about and deserves to be told here. Not a sports fan? The exhibit also speaks to the importance of contemporary collecting among museums in order to more accurately document societal changes. We cannot wait to learn some of the exchanges and stories from the many who visit and experience this history with us.

Pat LaFontaine was a center for the Buffalo Sabres from 19911997. He played 865 games during his career, 268 of which were during his tenure as a Sabre, and he is listed as one of the top 100 Greatest NHL Players. On November 16, 1991, LaFontaine was hit by Jamie Macoun’s stick during a game against the Calgary Flames and suffered a fractured jaw and lost several teeth. In response to this injury, Dr. John L. Butsch designed a metal jaw guard, which was fabricated by Buffalo Forge, for Pat LaFontaine to wear during the rest of the season. Here are LaFontaine’s helmet and jaw guard. These two pieces, along with his game worn jersey, will be featured in Icons: The Makers and Moments of Buffalo Sports.

The Buffalo History Museum One Museum Court Honoring:

Rebecca Justinger Registrar This silver medal, in the shape of a steel quoit, attached to a purple and green plaid silk ribbon, was presented by David Bell to the Caledonia Curling and Quoits Club of Buffalo, NY. Recipients of this award included George Macnoe in 1866, W. Leck in 1867, Thos. Simpson in 1877, and John B. Higham in 1876. Quoits is a game played with metal discs, traditionally made of steel. While there are many variations, the most prevalent version is played on an 18 yards long pitch with a 3 foot square clay bed at each end. A small pin is placed in the center of each clay pit and the top of the pin is flush with the clay. The objective is to throw the metal quoit from the opposite end and get the edge of the metal disc to land as close as possible to or directly on top of the pin. Unlike horseshoes, the goal is not to ring the pin. Each player has a helper called a “lighter.” This person places or holds a small piece of white paper over or near the pin so that the player has something at which to aim. Because of the distance and the size of the pin, the target is virtually Medal, impossible to see without the help of the lighter. Ribbon 4

Cold brook at The Buffalo History Museum Three years ago, Rich Wall of the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission introduced William “Bill” Fichtner, acclaimed TV and film star, to The Buffalo History Museum. Bill "fell in love" with the building and later reflected on it being “a pivotal and perfect dream location" for shooting multiple scenes in his upcoming movie. With the Museum becoming part of “the dream,” he endeavored to fit all the pieces that move a script from page to production with subsequent visits to Buffalo and meetings in the many months that followed. This summer, The Buffalo History Museum was cast as a ‘leading location lady’ in ‘Cold Brook’ written by William Fichtner and Cain DeVore. The announcement was made in our State Court late in June with much local fanfare and outpouring of well-wishes from the community. Production quickly followed a span of six days and nights; the Museum was occupied by ‘lights, camera and action.’

1

The Museum's classic architecture and unique spaces served as a backdrop for interior scenes. Cold Brook’s layered themes about friendship and 'doing the right thing’ in a small SUNY college town is a gift, of sorts, to Western New York from its favorite native son, and a potent statement of the dedicated work by our partners at the Buffalo and Niagara Film Commission. The project employed over 20 local industry professionals, included hundreds of extras, featured known TV and film actors from LA, and garnered mutually beneficial support from local businesses. We're thrilled to have played a part in Bill Fichtner's directorial debut and to have the Museum highlighted on so many extraordinary levels, both this recent summer and when the movie premieres next year. It's poetic and symbiotic that Buffalo's premier history museum, and the many stories in the making of this film, should take part in this unprecedented collaboration. It has made for an exciting Summer of 2017. See you at the Museum and the movie… Constance Caldwell Director of Communications & Community Engagement

They played rival teams from in town and Rochester, Syracuse, Brooklyn, and Hamilton. In 1858, the Niagaras moved their games to the northwest corner of Main and Virginia, a site occupied today by a set of handsome brick commercial buildings that date back to the 1880s.

But Buffalo has had organized baseball teams since 1857, when Buffalo’s first amateur team, the Niagara Base Ball Club, was established. Where did Buffalo’s first formal games take place? The first recorded baseball site in Buffalo was a vacant lot at Pennsylvania and Seventh Streets. Here, in 1857, the aspiring Niagaras adopted by-laws, learned how to lay out a diamond, and mastered the rules of the game. At the time, the entire neighborhood was undeveloped, with houses and businesses
