Letter From the Editor

Hey TBHS, I would like to thank staff members Kiker, Belcher, Bochantin, and Henderson for working diligently for TBHS Unleashed throughout first semester. Their hard work has contributed to the success of our newsmagazine. I wish the best for them in whatever they choose to pursue. With that being said, I’d like to welcome Zack Hudgens (11), Megan Ryba (10), Paige Martin (11), Jenna Massey(10), Keith Shepherd (11), Olivia Grelle (10), and the select freshmen staff (pg 3) to the TBHS Unleashed team. For this month’s issue, we wanted to highlight the one thing that best defines our generation and today’s society: technology. Recent advancements in technology have reformed the way we communicate, learn, listen to music, and receive information. For example, our online publication (tbhsunleashed.troy.k12.mo.us) is convenient for readers who want instant access to our articles, which I still encourage you to check out. Also, have your voice heard by submitting a letter to the editor to either me or Ms. O in room 219.

Sincerely, Amanda

( Video Stores Meet Their Match HaileighHeppermann/staff

Netflix has a flat rate fee of $10 a month with no late, shipping or handling fees with unlimited rentals that have no due dates. Netflix is all done online with an account you create. Netflix has streaming video options that offer a lot of television shows that are not carried on sites, like Hulu. If you want to watch the past seasons of popular television shows, Netflix has plenty of them available. Netflix has millions of subscribers. You are allowed to create an order list or a wish list of DVD’s that you would like to order from Netflix. Netflix sends the DVD’s from the order list through the mail. Red Box is $1 per night DVD rental allowing you to receive newer releases and some older movies, but it is not like Blockbuster where there are movies from years ago. Red Box is located at McDonalds, in grocery stores, gas stations etc. It is convenient when you can walk right up to the kiosk and rent a movie, but when the machine

is not working and there is no one around to help you or fix it, it becomes frustrating for most people. Red Box allows you to rent as many movies as wanted, but the dollar per night fee can add up if not returned the next day. Hulu is an online account for the Untied States and Japan with streaming television shows and movies where you can watch anywhere at any time as long as you have access to the internet. Hulu allows subscribers to make list of shows they want to watch next. Hulu has a simple layout, allowing users to easily skim though movies and TV shows. Hulu also has many movie trailers available for subscribers to view. Traditional video stores are all done by walking in and choosing from old or new releases. Most video stores have a different fee for each movie with four day retails usually. Late and damaged fees do vary within the video store. Not many video stores have online streaming like Netflix or Hulu.

While Netflix, Redbox and Hulu are growing most video stores are losing business. Are Netflix, Red Box, and Hulu going to overrule Blockbuster or other video stores? The deals that Netflix, Red Box, and Hulu offer allow subscribers to have access movies and TV shows right at home, making them change the price of videos and games. The only advantage blockbuster has is its collection older movies that Netflix, Red Box, Hulu might not have. If Blockbuster does not change the way they bring in customers soon, there may not be a single video store in your area.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin are CEO and Co-Founder of Google.

Google+ (plus) is a new social network operated by Google. Google designed the website to make it easy to connect with friends. To do this, Google+ allows multiple person video chats and online games that Google+ subscribers can play. Google+ members can also organize their friends into circles; family goes in one circle, friends in another, and co-workers in a third. One down side during beta testing was that a person had to know important people to get an invite to join the site. Now that testing is over, the public can join. Unfortunately, kids under the age of 18 are rest using Google+. Morgan Tackett (10) said, “I think it’s a good thing that Google has an age limit. I mean Facebook has a limit; it’s a responsibility thing, kind of like driving! You have to wait till you are old enough to handle it.” On the contrary, Jennifer McCormack (9) said, “I think that everybody should be able to use it. How is it supposed to be better than Facebook if nobody can use it?” So, how does Google+ compare to Facebook? Almost everybody can use Facebook. It’s easy to use and there are no age restrictions. Savannah Bogert (9) said, “Facebook will be beat by Google+. Facebook isn’t as good as it used to be. It has so much drama on it and Google+ may lower the restrictions.” Will Google+ lower the age restrictions and allow everyone to enjoy its many features?

This February, the TBHS Literary Guild will be hosting a writing events, the likes of which has not been seen before in TBHS halls: Writer’s Week. Running from the February 1517, Writer’s Week will feature “homegrown talent as well as published, professional writers.” Essays, poems, short stories, and rants are all eligible for submission by any student who wish to share his or her literature with an attentive audience. Submission does not guarantee acceptance, however; submitted writing will be judged for “quality, originality, and audience appeal of their manuscripts.” Brian Katcher, author of such celebrated young adult novels

such as Playing With Matches and Almost Perfect will be giving students a speech on writing during Writer’s Week. Katcher shared experiences and advise for aspiring writers. Q: What/who influenced you to become a writer? A: Believe it or not, I never had any desire to be a writer, and I never wrote anything creatively until I was 25. I read a lot, but I never had any interest in writing a book of my own. It was only when I’d moved down to Mexico and my girlfriend dumped me that I decided to fill the hours with trying to create a book. Much to my shock, I realized I enjoyed it. continued on page 13

Nooks, Kindle Kills the Bookstore MalloryBochantin/staff

Not long ago, one could walk into a library or classroom and find children with their noses stuck in books, eyes glued to the pages as they explored the magnificent worlds before them. Do the same thing today, however, and the scene is much different: Kindles and Nooks held in hands stoically as people glance briefly at screens, words illuminated brightly and faces aglow with the phosphorescence of technology. With the technological era nearing its peak, it is only natural that books have finally succumbed to new hi-tech devices such as Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook. Even Apple has caught on; they now offer full, unabridged books on iPads and iPod Touches. Some may consider the transition to be the first step in the future of reading. Others, though, would argue that this increase in digital books has not only killed the bookstore, but the drive to read as well. “Nooks and Kindles are valuable in the sense that you can take them anywhere and are space-saving, but they put small bookstores out of business,” notes Caitlyn Burkemper (11). Indeed, bookstores are suffering; Border’s Bookstore, for example, was the most recent chain to close over 300 of its doors. And it may not be the last. As these devices begin to catch on, and as more and more upgrades are being made to

the current models, an unfortunate trend is brewing. How long before modern society is left with no bookstores to speak of? How long before one is unable to walk into a bookstore and read the latest bestseller whilst drinking coffee in the in-store café? How long before tangible evidence of classic novels cease to exist in public domain, resting only behind glass walls at museums? Finally, what about the Kindle’s effect on reading? Does it encourage people to read more, with its easily obtainable books, downloaded in under a minute? Or does it frustrate users who lack access to hi-speed internet connections and must wait several minutes for the gadget’s store to load? While there may not be substantial proof that they decrease or increase the amount of time spent reading, it is safe to assume that some people may opt out of reading entirely if e-books are their only options. The progress being made in technology is indisputable. Much has been accomplished in recent years, most of which not only makes life easier but also improves the daily tasks people perform. Nevertheless, when it comes to reading, there exists many bookworms that wish the advancements would stop, leaving the ubiquitous bookstore – and its loyal inhabitants – untouched.

The new Wii-U, releasing sometime after 2012, is the most anticipated Nintendo console since the original Wii was released in 2006. The new Wii features an imbedded 6.2 inch touch screen external controller, the Wii Remote Plus, and supports all previous Wii controller input devices, including the Nunchuck controller, the Classic Controller, the Classic Controller Pro, and the Wii Balance Board. The Wii Remote Plus includes two analog circle pads, which remove the traditional barriers between games, players, and the TV by creating a second window into the game world. The controller includes a power button, home button, +control pad, a/b/y/x buttons, L/R buttons, and ZL/ZR buttons. A built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, microphone, stereo speakers, sensor strip, and a stylus. It will have an internal flash memory, as well as the option to save to an external USB hard drive disk drive, or an SD memory card. The touch screen display on the controller enables the player to play selected games even when the television is turned off, by displaying the game on the controller, or use both displays at the same time. “It basically combines the Wii and Nintendo DS together and has the most up-to-date graphics I’ve seen. I’m definitely going to get it,” said Lane Crouch (10). The touch screen also enables the user to zoom in on websites or other content viewed through the system and the gyroscope enables the Wii Remote Plus to be turned on its side and still display upright, comparable to Apple’s IPod and IPhone gyroscopes. The Wii-U will be backward compatible with original Wii games; however, it will not be compatible with Nintendo GameCube media.

iNNOVATION NEVER DIES

On October 5, 2011, the world was forced to endure the death of one of the nation’s (arguably the world’s) most brilliant innovators. As if that was not enough, people everywhere are now witnessing the effects of his loss. Despite the success of Apple in recent years, there are still expected to be a few negative effects and a slight decline in stock. Considering Jobs was the largest individual shareholder in Disney stock, which provided him with most of his fortune, hence the latter organization, may also see a decline. However, with Apple operating at more than $70 billion and Disney worth even more, the minimal declines in stock are hardly much to worry about. With a mind such as Jobs’, it is reasonable to worry about the future of Apple. His bright ideas, undeniable genius, and eccentric personality changed not only the company, but helped to drastically change the world of not only today, but tomorrow as well. MySpace was once the international “hotspot” on the World Wide Web. Today, the decline in active users is as steady as the increase of Facebook users. According to bbc.com, MySpace lost over 10 million users in January. The once notorious social site has been replaced by the likes of Twitter and Facebook. “It’s outdated and a waste of time,” said Kayla Drago (12). “I stopped using it because nobody got on it anymore,” said Destiny Colvin (12). MySpace has made several attempts to regain its lost users by changing not only its appearance, but the general output of the site. One of MySpace’s numerous attempts included

changing its original slogan from “a place for friends” to “discover and be discovered.” Following that change, MySpace is no longer considered a social networking site by the company itself or the loyal users it has managed to maintain. Now, it is a place for new and old musical artists. The site has also changed its purple color to a neater black and gray palette, giving the site a more professional look. MySpace tried to broaden its users by appealing to audiences it once did not. It tried to reach the fashion community by launching MyFashion. MyFashion is a page that posts videos of celebrities shopping and showcases the kind of styles they like. It also follows designers behind the scenes. So far these attempts

have not saved or regained the lost users, but MySpace plows on with what is being called a “Mash Up with Facebook,” allowing users to connect with their Facebooks on MySpace. “I was addicted to MySpace, I am currently addicted to Facebook, and expect to be addicted to Twitter in the future,” said Jasmine Mathews (12). Facebook is expected to turn out like MySpace, and just as Facebook overtook MySpace, Twitter is expected to overthrow Facebook. This process will likely be repeated as new social networking sites are created. Though MySpace has been forgotten and replaced, it is inevitable the process shall be never-ending as long as the internet lives on.

Grinds My Gears

What really irks me and drives me insane is when people text in class and then ask a billion questions about what is going on in class. I wish people would have enough self decency and not waste their time on pointless texts or statuses KaylaGardner/staff during school. When someone stop the lesson in the middle of class to ask pointless and self explanatory questions, it makes me want to throw his/her phone up against the wall. Could you please just pay attention? While you were asking your questions, we could have been getting more done in class. Since we are not getting as much done in class because you had to stop to ask your ridiculous questions, I now have to do more of it on my own time. If you are going to choose to text in class, then would you do us all the favor of using your own time to ask questions instead of wasting more class time? I can almost guarantee with 99% accuracy that the text you sent and the status or tweet you posted is going to affect your future negatively. Instead of tweeting, making statuses or sending irrelevant text messages, you could have been paying attention to what is going on in school. The work in class is what is going to take you further in life and help you build a better future. If you honestly think about which is more important, I am sure that you would decide not to text in class anymore. Think ten years from today. Are you going to be in college, have a job, start a family, or are you going to still be talking about the same text messages that you sent during high school? Be more respectful, not only to others, but yourself. It is not just their time you are wasting; it is yours too.

The Art of the ‘Liked’ Status LancePatrick /staff

“What’s on your mind?” The question in the status update box appears simple at first. Anyone could describe his or her day at school, what he or she ate for lunch, his or her deep inner feelings toward Bobby or Sue, or even his or her plans for later that night. A status like this, however, will likely be passed over without more than a glance from the reader. Every person loves being praised and revered for their actions and ideas. The goal of a successful status update is no different. If that person wants to draw in the readers and receive those coveted status likes and comments, there are a few rules that must be followed. First, it is necessary to understand which demographic one is trying to reach. Facebook statistics released that the average user has 130 friends. Chances are, with such high volumes of friends, those people have come from a variety of different backgrounds and furnish different beliefs. By choosing a specific demographic to address, people who fall into that clique will connect better to the status, thus improving the reader rating and probability of receiving that like or comment. Next, one must ask if the topic is relevant and engaging. The turkey sandwich consumed during lunch is neither interesting nor does it relate to the reader (unless that turkey sandwich lunch relates to a mutual event with a certain demographic). A better alternative involves posting an insightful opinion about a current issue or perhaps posting a witty response to a problem. Quoting an exciting or hilarious moment experienced within a group of mutual friends is also an effective option. Mastering the art of receiving those uplifting likes and comments takes time and practice. There are many tricks of the trades that aren’t covered here that will improve one’s results. The only way to discover them is through trial-anderror or taking notes from the pros. With this in mind, soon enough everyone can master the art of the ‘liked’ status.

Text Lingo

Do you find yourself befuddled, bemused, or bewildered by the texts you receive? Text acronyms, or seen to some as jumbled groupings of letters, have given the nation a twist on the way America communicates. The Smart Alternative? RachelCaldwell/staff

Smart phones are the popular phones that provide people with amazing apps, infinite information, and instant internet connection almost anywhere. But what happens when you receive too many text messages or you download too many apps? Emily Bass (10), owner of a Samsung Flight 2 from AT & T, has gone crazy because of her phone! After about a month of owning her phone, problems arose when it started to “randomly call people.” The problems got increasingly worse when her internet decided to stop at times. She no longer enjoys and sometimes regrets getting her phone. She does like the full key board and touch screen. Emily also believes that downloadable apps or text-tospeech make smart phones more attractive. Kara Hunsel (10) is the owner of a LG Optimus from Sprint. Although she loves her phone to death, the dilemma she had with her phone drove her “up the wall.” After just three months of having the phone it wouldn’t charge. Luckily this issue was quickly resolved and Kara is happy with her phone again. She believes smart phones have an advantage over normal phones because of their access to the internet. Stefanie Maraczi (11) has the desirable HTC Desire from U.S. Cellular. She absolutely loves it, except when she forgets to delete old texts messages. “I have like 2000 texts,” Stefanie says. It freezes for a moment before returning to normal but it still can be annoying. Maraczi also said that she likes advantages that the smart phones provide, such as internet and apps. Lexi Scott (11) owns a Verizon Incredible which she bought when it first came out. The only problem she has with the Incredible is that the phone’s internet is getting slower every day and is taking longer to download apps. Despite this issue, she still likes her phone and does not regret buying it. Her favorite thing is the internet which she uses to look things up at times. She also loves playing her favorite game, Angry Birds, another luxury of smart phones.

TBHS Donates Hope JessalynKiker/ Staff

This year’s canned food drive was a resounding success. A total of 11,010 cans were collected from the staff and students of TBHS. This total can be attributed in part to the mass amount of extra credit offered by multiple teachers, giving students an incentive other than good will to donate non- perishable items. The mass amounts of donations were transported to the Ever Life Food Pantry by Matt Bauman, Jim Zuroweste, and multiple student volunteers on Tuesday, December 20. “I was very surprised by the amount of donations we had.” David Hanke (11) said. This year marked the second biggest donation made by Troy Buchannan to the Ever Life Food Pantry. The food donated will go to struggling families all over the county to

A: To make the winning shot would be amazing. It would make me feel all the more confidant for the season to come. A: I would feel like I made the team proud and that I was responsible for the win. help make a very merry Christmas. (Continued from page 5)

Q: What was that first story about? Did it ever move beyond the rough draft stage? A: Actually, it was my first book, Playing With Matches. I never expected to finish it, let alone for it to be published. Q: Do you have any advice for student writers? A: Start writing now. I never wrote a thing until I was 25 and I feel that that was a lot of time wasted. Like playing a musical instrument or excelling at a sport, the more you practice the better you’ll be. Pike Lincoln Technical Proceeds Despite Fire JenniferFiroved & JoHannahMcDonald/staff

The fire destroyed the majority of Pike-Lincoln’s campus.

TBHS Talks What is the least useful technology? “Auto Correct because when it changes your word and it’s always wrong. It just creates more work for you.” C.J. Addington (10) “IPads, because it’s just a gigantic iPod touch.” Meredith Jones (11)

On Friday, December 2, 2011, tragedy struck when a fire ignited at Pike Lincoln Technical School in Eolia. The fire caused extensive damage to the campus; nothing was salvageable. Fortunately, the school’s recent addition, a new auto diesel building, was left untouched by the flames. No lives were lost during this disaster, and the school was covered by insurance. Though it was insured, it will still be a financial setback to Pike and Lincoln County school districts. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Industrial Technology teacher Ted Wilkinson said, “It was a total loss; it burnt so bad they can’t tell where it started.” From Monday December 5 to Thursday, December 8 classes were canceled for PikeLincoln Tech students altogether. While the classes were canceled, the Lincoln County school administration put together job shadowing opportunities around the area that went along with the programs that each student is in, to continue the education process. Currently all of the auto-related classes have been moved to the diesel building, while all other classes, which included the center’s computer, nursing, business, and construction programs, were moved to the Clopton Middle School. This building is available and was unused due to the small population in Clopton.

The most unfortunate part of the incident is not the destruction but the loss suffered in the community, including Lincoln and Pike Counties. About 85 Troy Buchanan students lost a place of learning in the blaze and countless memories with it. Krista Hogarth (11), a commuting student of the school, said, “It was shocking at first, but the realization hit me when I saw my teacher cry.” All of the teachers at PikeLincoln lost personal items they had at the school while the students lost projects. Special Education teacher Kirsten Hunchberger, a close friend to some of the technical school teachers said, “A lot of students have told me that they were really sad that they lost projects that they had been working on since the beginning of the school year.” The fire required 125 fire fighters and 40 fire engines from all over Pike and Lincoln counties to extinguish it. Water from the water tower on highway NN by Bowling Green was used to help extinguish the fire. While the Pike-Lincoln officials prepare to reconstruct the damaged premises, only time can heal the wounds left behind in the fire’s wake. The reconstruction of the PikeLincoln Technical School is expected to take a bit of time, but a timeline has not been determined. with firsthand knowledge of the game. Her love of basketball started early in life. Ruether started playing ball at a young age when her cousin asked her to rebound for him. “He taught me a lot and he is my inspiration,” Ruether stated. “I’ve played basketball my entire life, from fourth grade on up. In high school, I was on the Varsity team all four years then went on to play four more years at Washington University.” Ruether said she has high hopes for them this season. “The team hustles and absorbs everything,” she said. “They are always getting better.” She said her team has potential because of its strong work ethic and great attitude towards the sport. “It’s just the little things that the team needs to work on, like boxing out and turnovers,” Ruether said. The freshmen team had a great start, and if Ruether keeps working with the team on the “little things,” they could become champions.

Winter Wear ToriHeppermann/staff

This winter’s fashion is focused on sparkle and shine. Whether glitter, gloss, or sequin, it is the time to shine. Soft colors are a must as well. It is essential to remember that in winter colors shouldn’t be as bright as they are in spring and summer. [In no way means] you have to go black, grey, and brown. Choose colors like lavender, caramel, teal, gold, or maroon. Also, don’t forget to keep warm this winter with a stylish coat.
