NATIONS CUP EDITION | 4

A message from Jane Tidball & Chris Pack As we embark on our 45th Anniversary of hosting tournaments, we couldn’t be more fortunate to share it will all of our friends that keep returning year after year to compete. We welcome our new exhibitors making their way to ‘tbird’ for the first time, it is going to be an exciting season! We are so proud to continue to grow with the new Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup League as we host our first 5* event. We look forward to welcoming athletes both two and four legged from around the world to our show. With some unbelievable support, we are able to build an additional FEI barn as well as a new FEI rider trail which will alleviate horse traffic down the main boulevard along the hunter rings. And speaking of hunter rings, our amazing grounds crew has created a

signature silica warm up ring and golf cart parking down Maplebrook Lane. We are pleased to have secured renewal for the next three years in the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping League, we have increased that tournament to a 4* and can’t think of a better way to end our International season. We are looking forward to having everyone back for our 2018 season and we sincerely thank you all for being such loyal exhibitors, staff, sponsors and friends. Good luck to everyone, Jane and Chris.

Oh Canada! Two for Two The 2018 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ North and Central America and Caribbean League qualifers began in Ocala, Florida followed by Coapexpan, Mexico and finish here at Thunderbird Show Park where Team Canada will have the home soil advantage.

FEI / Anwar Esquivel

The 2018 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ qualifiers got underway in Ocala, Florida this past February. Team Canada; Francois Lamontagne, Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar, and Tiffany Foster, soared into the top position with 100 points. It was an intricate course with just five clear rides, two from Canada’s Ian Miller and Eric Lamaze. The next stop was Coapexpan, Mexico where Team Canada once again would seal the top position now leading with 200 points. Laura Jane Tidball, Jenn Serek, Keean White and Jonathon Miller made up the team to win the $5,690,000 MXN Longines Nations’ Cup™.

Like father, like son; both Ian & Jonathon Miller would jump double clear rounds in Ocala and Coapexpan. Jonathon Miller acknowledges the importance of what Longines does for the sport of show jumping saying, “It is great for the global aspect of the sport. To also recognize individuals for their accomplishments by offering the clear round bonus is great; Longines rewards all aspects of the competition.”

A Guide to Show Jumping The goal in show jumping is to jump the course clean (without faults) in the designed sequence within the time allowed. Should a horse lower the height of an obstacle (fence), penalty points, called faults, are assessed. Each lowered fence draws a sanction of four faults, as does the first refusal. There is also a penalty for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course, 1⁄4 of a time fault is given for each second or part of a second

over the time allowed. The horse with the fewest faults (penalties) is the winner. Some open jumper classes are “time first jump-off” classes. After one round, all horses that have jumped without any penalties are asked to come back for a jump-off round over a shortened course. In the jump-off the same scoring rules apply, except that in the case of equality of faults, the horse with the fastest time will be declared the winner. >

NATIONS CUP EDITION | 24

The Jumps The types of jumps used in competition are straight or vertical fences and wide fences. The degree of difficulty is determined by the height, width, construction and placement in relation to other jumps on the course.

vertical: This is a straight up and down fence of any height without spread or width to it. Although it looks relatively simple, it is actually one of the most difficult for a horse to jump. In FEI World Cup Show Jumping, verticles are set at heights up to 1.60 meters or 5.25 feet.

oxer: This jump consists of two elements in one jump in order to produce a spread. The parallel oxer, in which the front and back rails are of equal height is the most difficult to jump. The triple bar is another spread fence using three elements of graduating heights.

combination: This is a series of fences one or two strides apart. There may be two or three fences involved and they can be of any type. Combinations are very demanding, for if the first element is not jumped correctly, it is very difficult in the short space before

the next fence to correct the horse’s stride to clear the rest of the combination. The number of fences in a combination are marked with the same number followed by the letter of order ie. 1A, 1B, 1C. If a horse stops at a fence in any part of the combination, the rider must start over again from the first fence of the combination and jump all the elements again.

water jump: A low hedge of fence usually marks the leading edge of the jump although it may be placed in the centre of the water. The width of the jump — a distance of 12 to 16 feet makes this a very difficult fence to negotiate. The horse must clear the white tape on the far side of the water or incur jumping faults.

gate: This fence is a vertical made to appear solid and imposing by using planks, balustrades, gates and or brush.

table top: An elevated area to which the horse can jump up and off of and where fences can be placed on top of or around to make the obstacle more difficult. >

NATIONS CUP EDITION | 25

The Course

The Course Walk

The designer’s goal is to set up a challenging course that only a half dozen or so horse and rider combinations can complete with no faults. Good course designers alter their courses according to the level of competition. They seek color and variety in their jumps. The first one or two jumps are often simpler in nature so that the animal can build confidence as he proceeds to the more difficult obstacles ahead.

Riders preview their upcoming rides in advance by walking the line they intend to ride. The horse sees the course only when he and his rider enter the ring to compete. Each rider knows the length of his horse’s stride, and walks the course accordingly (roughly 12 to 14 human paces equals one canter stride of a horse). The riders pace off the distance between fences and determine how best to adjust this to their own horse's strides. Riders also take note of the different types of fences offered, their relationship to one another, the course footing and any other potential problem areas. Then they regulate the horses stride accordingly. Furthermore, they try to find where a tighter line can save vital time when jumping against the clock.

Horses need dimensions to assist them in negotiating a tough course and designers will either try to fill in gaps and spaces under and around the fences with flowers, shrubbery, boxed plants, planking, etc. to help the horse's depth perception, or create airy obstacles to increase the level of difficulty. The course is a test of the horse and rider. With specific demands in timing, judgment and jumping ability. The course designers can create levels of difficulty by varying the distances between the fences, the type of combinations used and by changing the placement of the fences, which will alter the direction in the track.

The rider’s job is to guide his horse to each fence in a controlled and balanced manner, so that the horse may jump easily and land galloping on to the next fence without having to regain balance or break stride.

NATIONS CUP EDITION | 26

The Tack & Equipment Tack consists of various equipment and accessories worn by horses. Saddles, stirrups, bridles, reins, bits, martingales, and breastplates are all forms of horse tack. Equipping a horse is often referred to as tacking up. Saddles are seats for the rider, fastened to the horse’s back by means of a girth, a wide strap that goes around the horse at a point about four inches behind the forelegs. It is important that the saddle be comfortable for both the rider and the horse as an improperly fitting saddle may create pressure points on the horse’s back muscle and cause the horse pain. Stirrups are supports for the rider's feet. They hang down on either side of the saddle. They provide greater stability for the rider but can have safety concerns due to the potential for a rider’s feet to get stuck in them. Bridles amd halters are used for control and communication with the horse. Bridles usually, but not always utilize a bit to give the rider the ability to steer and maintain contact with the horse. The reins consist of leather straps attached to the outer ends of a bit and extend to the rider’s hands. Bridles without a bit are less common but use pressure points around the horses face to communicate rather than a bit.

A bit is a device placed in a horse’s mouth, kept on a horse’s head by means of the bridle. There are many types, each useful for specific types of riding and training. The mouthpiece of the bit does not rest on the teeth of the horse, but rather on the gums or “bars” of the horses mouth. This space is behind the front incisors and in front of the back molars. It is important that the style of bit is appropriate to the horse's needs and is fitted correctly for it to function properly. A breastplate is a leather strap that attaches to the front of the saddle, across the horse’s chest, with a strap that runs between the horse’s front legs which attaches to the girth. They help keep the saddle in position and reduce the risk of movement. They are usually seen in demanding, fast-paced sports and are crucial pieces of safety equipment for activities such as show jumping. A martingale is a piece of equipment that keeps a horse from raising its head too high. Various styles can be used as a control measure, to prevent the horse from avoiding rider commands by raising its head out of position; or as a safety measure to keep the horse from tossing its head. In some instances you will see horses wearing ear bonnets, this can reduced the noise and distraction for horses while in competition. <

ASK THE JUDGE Dealing with spooking, losing a stirrup or rein and more. Randy Roy is a Senior International judge, course designer and author. He owns and operates Hunters Glen Show Stable in King, ON, with his daughter, Ryan Roy. Article written by Randy Roy and courtesy of Horse Sport magazine

You are having a good round, but coming to the last line your horse spooks. Are you better off circling and sorting it out, or just continuing? My advice is to continue, as you have no idea how the rest of the class has been and you could still be eligible for a ribbon.

When jumps are moved for a flat class, should rails and gates be left leaning on the standards? No – it is now a USEF rule that the rails and gates need to be laid on the ground out of the way. Placing them up on the standards is spooky and could be dangerous if a horse runs into them.

How many strides is too late for a lead change? In Palm Beach and indoors, probably one stride past the ideal spot on the diagonal or in the corner could be noted. I would say three strides past that point would be noted as a minor fault.

In a derby, in the US they jog before the class, & here they jog after the class. How do you feel about that? I really like that they jog before the class, because if a horse is lame, then it’s a no-go and the horse saves all that work and effort. >

NATIONS CUP EDITION | 35

How serious is it in a hunter class when a rider loses a stirrup or a rein? Serious – it distorts the whole picture and looks sloppy and incorrect. Even though I am judging the horse, the rider has to be doing the right things, and that is feet in the stirrups and hands on both reins Do you penalize a hunter that jumps too high? Absolutely not – as long as they hold their form. I love this – there is lots of time to get lower and it will be placed ahead of a horse that has no airtime. How do you feel about a rider clucking going to a jump or on take-off? Silence is golden. I do not like it, so save it for the schooling ring. This is real – no noises. In a handy class, do you allow the riders to walk the course? That is a decision for the show management, but I would say no. The posted course has all of the distances on it and the route is marked, so there is no real reason to walk it. What is the minimum number of jumps required in a recognized hunter class (other than a derby)? Is there a maximum number? The minimum number of jumps required is eight. There is no rule with respect to the maximum number, but I would say that anything over 10 would be too many. For me, the maximum number would be nine. In a handy hunter class a trot jump is called for and going down from the canter a horse walks. How serious is that? The horses need to come down to the trot – no walk or halt – so that would be a serious error. Does the rider have the option of not going when the water truck or a drag is going on in the next ring? That is up to the in-gate person, trainer, and management. I understand why they wouldn’t want to go, but it does hold up the class, so it is ultimately up to them. <

Where tack is concerned, even if legal, what do you not want to see? • Leather stoppers on reins for a running martingale • Converter attachment on the noseband • Buckles on the bridle facing out • Loose nosebands • Reins too long – especially on ponies • Long, flapping stirrup leathers • Too much sheepskin on the girth • Running martingales in hunter arenas • Running martingales hooked up as a standing martingale • Gag snaffle bits

Krause Berry Farms & Estate Winery has something for everyone and is welcoming to family’s with children of all ages. Do you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the show? Take a short drive to Township 7 where you can find; wine, art, culture and culinary experiences. This is a place to introduce your senses to BC wine. Whether you are in the mood for a well balanced Chardonnay or the symphony of flavours in the premium Meritage Reserve 7, Township 7 is a wonderful choice to unwind. The final destination and a very unique experience is the Vista D’oro Farms & Winery. Dedicated to providing an ultimate agritourism experience, Vista D’oro Farms & Winery grows, heritage orchard fruits and vinifera grapes. The flagship of Vista D'oro, a fortified walnut wine is a blend of Marechal Foch, Merlot, Vista D'oro Green Walnuts and BC Brandy. This artisanal fortified port-style wine is made from BC’s finest vinifera and hand made in small batches. A truly unique offering. Thunderbird Show Park is surrounded by beauty and heritage. Untack, unbraid and while the horses rest take advantage of the neighbourhood. There is nothing better than a win followed by a glass of wine!

EQUESTRIAN PHOTOGRAPHER; Kathy Russell For more than a decade, Kathy Russell of Kathy Russell Photography has been photographing horses and riders as they travel though the top show circuits in the U.S. She studied photojournalism at Loyalist College after earning her undergraduate degree at Trent University. Russell uses her journalism skills to tell stories through photography, capturing in time a feeling, an interaction, while also recording the exciting moments of an equestrian class. Russell’s equestrian experience as a competitor, braider and groom gives her a unique perspective behind the camera as she quietly observes, watching, chronicling and capturing the moment. Throughout the last two decades, Russell has traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada with her Nikon camera and lenses. <
