CHARLES DICKENS FESTIVAL

Welcome to the 24th Annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival!

A

s fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Join us as we celebrate the Festival’s 24th Anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. Hailed as Long Island’s best festival for 2019, Dickens begins on Saturday, December 7, running through Sunday, December 8. Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the Northeast, from all 50 states and, indeed, from around the globe (over 50 guests from the EU last year), will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a

central theme. From A Tale of Two Cities to A Christmas Carol, Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities. We are proud to carry on this time-honored tradition with our Dickens Festival Be on the lookout for the engaging Mrs. Cratchit’s Holiday Cookies & Crafts event, featuring a potpourri of small craft and cookie kits for families to purchase and put together in time for the holiday season. Mrs. Cratchit’s and the wonderous Festival of Trees, an artistic collection of magnificent Christmas creations, are found at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear once again created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, should be on every person’s “must see” list because this magical presentation is not to be missed. Look for it on the corner of Barnum and West Main Street. The Artisan Square, showing how hand-crafted works were made during Victorian England, resides in the parking lot by the blinking light where Main Street and East and West Broadway merge. The spectacular Tiny Tim’s Train Station (a Toys for Tots location), presented by the Reed Family Train Project, will dazzle at the Harbormaster’s building. Cookie Land will take

place at People’s United Bank across the street from Santa’s Workshop, rounding out the big attractions. The restaurants offer Dickensian inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open for extended hours for holiday shopping. The Village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ Street Characters and alive with a host of musical, magical and theatrical presentations. The Grand East Main Street Opening Parade on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM and Pickwick’s Puppet Parade, this year featuring new puppets worthy of a major Hollywood feature film, ends the festivities beginning at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Don’t miss either one as each parade features awe-inspiring new attractions. So, come one! Come all! A rapturous time for the young and young at heart, the Dickens Festival is sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. tep back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the historic Drowned Meadow House. Snowflakes glisten high above confection displays created by renowned confection artist Pat Darling. Elaborate confection nutcrackers and giant turrets embellish the beautiful displays throughout the workshop area. The tour continues as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace. Anticipating the night before Christmas, she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is all aglow as she looks out upon Santa’s whimsical Christmas forest. Oh my, how

Tiny Tim’s Train StationToys-For-Tots

Tiny Tim visited the Dickens Festival in 2015 to spread some good cheer.

his year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-out-for-Christmas model train exhibit located at the Harbormaster’s Building (number 18 on map) in Port Jefferson. The Reed family works for weeks to assemble a truly stunning exhibit that is sure to captivate one and all. The location will also be host to the Toys-for-Tots toy-raising event. The Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at different model train sets course around the setup. This is a family favorite and this year is presented by Maggio Environmental and the Town of Brookhaven.

Beginning in 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tons of coal at a “breakneck” uphill speed of four miles per hour. Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe as the steam locomotive helped to usher in the Industrial Era in Britain and America. Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!”

Stop by during the Dickens Festival to say hi and for a light refreshment.

Artisan Square The Artisan Square will feature five artisans who demonstrate how crafts were done during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing. Lead by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high quality, handmade workmanship. Our Dickens Festival Artisans utilize 19th century tools to elu-

cidate festival attendees in the creative process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life. You can find the Artisan Square next to Killwins on Main Street just South of the blinking light at Main Street and East/West Broadway. Sponsored by: Suffolk Tent

She is also a prime mover for the popular Sunday Street Concert Series presented in the Long Island Museum. This series spotlights national and internationally known recording acts. Wonderful! She co-produces the Fiddle and Folk Festival in Setauket, adds originative ideas to the Long Island Mini Maker Faire, coordinates the performers at the Port Jefferson Harvest Festival, fits together artists and stores for the newly minted Port Jefferson Art Walk AND occasionally gets a full night’s sleep. very once in a while, our tired world is blessed by the creative efforts of an extraordinary individual. That person is Amy Tuttle. Amy joined the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council back in 2008 as the production manager for our events. She also stepped into the role of event coordinator for the Dickens Festival beginning in 2008 through 2013. A remarkable trial-by-fire start for someone just coming on board. Amy’s family has been in the area for literal decades with Amy carrying on the family traditions of exceptional visual art acumen, leadership and a directed manner that serves to bring people together to get a particular event accomplished to the delight of our audiences. Amy created the popular Sunset Concert Series that arrives every Wednesday evening in July and August in the Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson. She also pioneered two concert series in the Village Center: Something New, a series focused on

A Christmas Carol

CHARLES DICKENS FESTIVAL

The Grand East Main Street Opening Parade This year our two parades are now dressed to the nines with new additions and spectacular creations! The Grand East Main Street Opening Parade (say that three times real fast) will play host this year to the Amityville Highland Pipe Band, a group consisting of a diverse collection of individuals from all walks of life. The band members come together to celebrate the tradition of the Scottish The Black Watch with stirring music of the pipes and drums. The Amityville Highland Pipe Band is the ONLY civilian band in the world that has been commis-

sioned by Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of England, to wear The Black Watch tartan. The opening Parade will also feature our extensive cast of street characters and singing groups who provide outdoor entertainment both days and the traditional Port Jefferson-Bridgeport Ferry Float. The parade starts at 11:00 AM and travels from East Main and Main to the Port Jefferson Village Center for the opening ceremony. Amityville Highland Pipe Band is Sponsored by Maia Salon Spa & Wellness of Hauppauge

Pickwick’s Puppet Parade Hollywood: Hold Your Breath!

The Festival’s closing Pickwick’s Puppet Parade will feature a super new artistic look for the giant puppet versions of Marley’s Ghost, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and an awe-inspiring Christmas Future brought to us through the creative efforts of Genevieve Varela and Vin Blangiardo. Supported by a grant from Riverhead Toyota, Gen and Vin are building the new puppets from simple cardboard and Papiermâché imbued with amazing intensity by this artistic duo. They promise an experience that w i l l last a lifetime. But the action doesn’t stop there as the parade will feature the entire 138-piece Longwood High School Marching Band with instruments alight as a special treat. Also included this year is the Hook and Ladder Party Company

fire truck. Our honoree, Amy Tuttle will be on the Port Jefferson-Bridgeport Ferry Float, accompanied by the Arts Council’s two artists in residence, Andrew Fortier, a talented musician and expert builder (appearing in the opening parade) and Suzanne MaebertFrank, the queen of hand embellished embroidery. Please join us for the amazement and fun! The puppets are sponsored by: Riverhead Toyota and The Shipyard at Port Jeff Harbor The Longwood Marching band is sponsored by: Kilwins Port Jefferson and The Barony of An Dubhaigeann – The Artisans of Oliver Twist’s Artisan’s Square

Mrs. Cratchit’s Holiday Cookies & Crafts Come one! Come all to the ground floor of the Port Jefferson Village Center Skip Jack Room to visit Mrs. Cratchit’s Holiday Cookies & Crafts event for the 24th Annual Charles Dickens Festival in Port Jefferson on December 7 & 8 from 12-4 pm. With the holiday season right around the corner, the clever craft packages featured for purchase are designed to engage and delight children of all ages desiring to make an ornament as a holiday gift for a loved one, or to simply add a handmade adornment to family festivities. This year will

feature Mrs. Cratchit’s Cookies for colorful decorating along with the availability of Bright Red Santa Hats and traditional Black Top Hats as part of the holiday fare. Mrs. Cratchit herself would approve as a gathering of helpers will be on hand to assist in creating the crafty creations. Guaranteed to add a smile, a visit to Mrs. Cratchit’s Holiday Cookies & Crafts event will help to usher in the holidays with hand-made joy. Presented by: MAIA Salon Spa and Wellness, 725 Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown, NY 11787

Special Treats Traveling around the Village during both days visiting restaurants and shops will be The Dickens Carolers, Directed by Bonny Grice, the fabulous Jewel Tones and, as a special treat, The Harbormen Chorus. These exceptional singing groups will join our traditional street characters, carolers and street plays entertaining Dickens Festival attendees. The newest restaurant in Port Jefferson, Due Baci, an Italian restaurant at 154 KYLE BARR West Broadway – water side of the street (just before driving up the hill towards Setauket), will be donating 10% of proceeds on all meals served from 12:00 to 5:00 Saturday and Sunday. Our special musical groups and street characters will be performing on and off both days. So, if you want a great meal AND help support the Dickens Festival, please join us at Due Baci.

The Fabulous Festival of Trees Celebration

H

PHOTOS BY KYLE BARR

ear ye, Hear ye! The 24th Annual Charles Dickens Festival invites you to take a look at the fantastic Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision, expertly crafted and garnished…and not to be missed. New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841 when Queen Victoria married German-born Prince Albert. From that time the decorating of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoity-toity to the hoi polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A

Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree… Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and

dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!” The Festival of Trees will be available to view at the

Displays from last year’s Festival of Trees

Dickens Festival up through the end of December. Thanks to BNB Bank and Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy
