Charles Dickens, Court Reporter The years between 1828 and 1831, the years of debating the reform bill, proved to be lively and transformative not only for England but for a young man named Charles Dickens. Mid-16th century, Parliament prohibited all reporting/publishing of its proceedings believing it should deliberate in private and regarded any attempt to publicize its proceedings as a punishable offense. Later in that century, conflicts among progressive members of Parliament and growing weight of public opinion persuaded Parliament to relax its stance. In 1803, the House of Commons passed a resolution giving the press the right to enter the public gallery. Reporting of lively, quarrelsome Parliamentary debates meant citizens could stay informed about the government’s proceedings. During that time, William Cobbett’s Weekly Political Register, added the supplement Parliamentary Debates to the newspaper, which was a reprint of journalists’ reports of speeches extracted from other newspapers. In 1812, Cobbett sold his business to Thomas Hansard, son of Luke Hansard, printer to the House of Commons, and the title changed to Hansards Parliamentary Debates. The Hansard Family produced the Parliamentary Debates until 1889 making the Hansard name synonymous with the printed debates. Charles Dickens’ uncle, John Henry Barrow, was a successful journalist who had previously reported the proceedings of Doctors’ Commons for the Times. Barrow had established the Mirror of Parliament, a weekly newspaper that offered verbatim reporting of Parliamentary debates. Wanting to rival the Hansard by offering the complete record of what went on in the House of Commons, he assembled a team of stenographers to help him including his brother, Edward, and Charles’ father, John, as reporters, and young Charles was inspired to learn shorthand. Charles, a junior law clerk earning 15 schillings per week, went to a bookshop, examined textbooks on various shorthand systems that were available, and decided Thomas Gurney’s System of Shorthand was the system for him since it was the most expensive at 10 schillings. Most completed shorthand training in three years, but Charles became proficient in two. His first experience as a reporter was in the Doctors’ Commons (aka College of Civilians). Doctors’ Commons was a society of lawyers practicing civil law in London. Members lived and worked in the society’s buildings. Court proceedings of civil law courts were held there. Lawyers dressed in scarlet robes and white wigs, argued divorces and wills in dusty rooms where stale musty odors permeated the air. Irregular, freelance work frustrated Charles, who was always waiting to be chosen by one of the proctors to provide shorthand services. In love with Maria Beadnell, he needed to become more than a stenographer in Doctors’ Commons to impress her parents. In 1831, John Barrow added Charles to his shorthand reporter team. Reporters were well paid for their short shifts. Charles matched veteran reporters’ shorthand skills in speed and accuracy and was soon working at House of Commons where it was just as stuffy as the Doctors’ Commons but more interesting. The Public Gallery of the Old House of Commons in St. Stephen’s Chapel was cramped, gloomy, and stuffy. Charles made himself available for debates, even if they went late into the night. Squeezing himself onto a bench provided for visitors in the cramped gallery, balancing a notebook on his knees, straining to hear speeches and exchanges said in the thick atmosphere of the chamber floor below him, he would capture the words by the gas chandeliers light. Dickens would transcribe his handwritten stenographic notes later at the newspaper office. To Charles, the work involved more stenography and less creativity. He became the major contributor to the Mirror of Parliament‘s full report of the first major debate on the proposed Reform Act in March of 1831. In organizing an official Parliamentary record, he gained a reputation as a fast, accurate, and trustworthy reporter and in March 1832, he was a Parliamentary reporter for two newspapers: True Sun, and Mirror of Parliament. For him, the reporting was not just about transcription, but narration/interpretation, and would add local color to the objective dryness. Being a Parliamentary reporter was like being in an exclusive/influential club in London. Gallery reporters established themselves as the conscience of a political system that was starting to examine its workings. Politicians and reporters discovered they needed one another. Changes began in 1831, when the House of Lords designated a separate row of seats for reporters, and in 1835, the design for the new Palace of Westminster, included special galleries for reporters. Eventually, Dickens became more of a writer than a reporter for the newspapers. He used years of experience as a court reporter as inspiration for what would become some of his most popular novels. Themes in his story Oliver Twist came from listening to the debates on reform. He mentions the profession in David Copperfield, stating that learning the “noble art and mystery of stenography” plunged him “into a sea of perplexity.” The legal system that worked against the lower classes in Victorian London was immersed in to his stories to give his readers a vivid and realistic legal backdrop in books such as Bleak House and Nicholas Nickleby. Court reporters, like Dickens, are known to have a front seat to history. If you would like your front row seat to history, contact the Court Reporting Program, at LIBI (www.libi.edu), (631-499-7100). ©153966
Charles DiCkens Festival
Welcome to the 22nd annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival! As fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Join us as we celebrate the festival’s 22nd anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. Hailed as one of Long Island’s top 10 events, the festival begins Saturday, Dec. 2, running through Sunday, Dec. 3. Produced by the Greater Port JeffersonNorthern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the North East, from all 50 states and, indeed, from around the globe, will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. This year the wonderful East Main Street Grand Opening Parade Saturday morning will feature international singing star Candice Night gracing the parade as the Snow Queen with her attending elves. Night will also close the festival appearing in the delightful Grand Finale Giant Puppet Parade. Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812–1870), Charles Dickens was
arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities. Dickens made two reading tour trips to the United States and Canada, in 1842 and again in 1867, meeting with a long list of contemporary luminaries of the time including Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, President John Tyler, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Dickens’ American publisher James Thomas Fields. Be on the lookout for the engaging “Mrs. Cratchet’s Colorful Christmas Crafts” event, featuring a potpourri of small craft kits for families to purchase and put together in time for the holiday season. Mrs. Cratchet’s and the expanded Festival of Trees are found at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear once again
created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, should be on every person’s “must see” list because this magical presentation is not to be missed. The Artisan Square, showing how handcrafted works were made during Victorian England, the spectacular Tiny Tim’s Train Station, presented by the Reed Family Train Project and a stop at CookieLand at Danfords Bayles Hall rounds out the big attractions. The restaurants offer Dickensian-inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open for extended hours for holiday shopping. The village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ street characters and alive with a host of musical, magical and theatrical presentations sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Please join us for a wonderful time! Margot Garant Mayor, Village of Port Jefferson Allan Varela Chair, Greater Port JeffersonNorthern Brookhaven Arts Council

Santa’s Workshop
Step back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical threeroom workshop. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the historic Drowned Meadow House. Snowflakes glisten high above confection displays created by renown confection artist Pat Darling. Elaborate confection nutcrackers and giant turrets embellish the beautiful displays throughout the workshop area. The tour continues as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace. Anticipating the night before Christmas, she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is aglow as she looks out upon Winterscape. Oh my, how exciting … Santa and

the Industrial Era in Britain and America. Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!”

Artisan Square
The Artisan Square will feature five artisans who demonstrate how crafts were done during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing. Lead by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high-quality, handmade workmanship. Our Dickens Festival artisans utilize 19th-century tools and educate festival attendees in the creative process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life. You can find the Artisan Square in the Farmer’s Market location on Main Street just south of the blinking light at Main Street and East/West Broadway.

This year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-out-for-Christmas model train exhibit located at the Harbormaster’s Building locatedin Port Jefferson (number 18 on map). The location will also be host to the Toys-for-Tots collection event. The commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at different model train sets course around the setup. This is a family favorite and this year is presented by The Shipyard at Port Jeff Harbor, Luxury Rental Apartments and the Town of Brookhaven. Beginning in 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. Then 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tonnes of coal at a breakneck uphill speed of four miles per hour. Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe as the steam locomotive helped to usher in

Behold the magical Snow Queen Candice Night “I am constantly inspired by nature and the miracles that present themselves to us each day, but that many are too busy to see and enjoy,” said Night. “The colors of a sunset, the star-filled sky, the wind through your hair. All of these things are so simple and free but can fill us with such wonder it’s like seeing them through the eyes of a child.” Night also pulls from regional fairy tales, myths and legends. “We were all brought up with our parents reading us these stories before we go to bed at night and enter our own dreamland,” Night said. “So those fairy tales are woven into our memories. Nostalgic for me, and bring us back to a time where you felt safe, secure and loved.” Come see Candice as the Magical Snow Queen in both the opening and closing parades.

Come one, Come all to the grand East Main Street opening parade and be treated to a special appearance by the internationally acclaimed performer Candice Night as the Magical Snow Queen. Many know her as the front woman of Blackmore’s Night, where for the past 18 years she has been dancing across the stages of the world in historical venues with her eight-piece band performing the songs she has co-written with her writing partner and husband, legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The critically acclaimed band Blackmore’s Night has been known for the past two decades for taking melodies of centuries gone by and updating them with new instrumentation, new arrangements and Night’s lyrics, which have always been inspired by the simple pleasures in life.

2017 Dickens Festival honorees: Karen and George Overin This year it is our great pleasure to honor George and Karen Overin for the 22nd Annual Charles Dickens Festival. Perhaps there are no two people that better represent the joy, the feeling of family and, indeed, the magic of this cherished weekend that has captured the imagination of people from around the globe. George’s character, Oliver the Sweeper, has been a mainstay of the festival since 1999, gleefully anticipated by young and old alike. But beyond the public adoration, Oliver the Sweeper is also George’s favorite as the love of meeting people on the streets of Port Jefferson and greeting them, along with fellow sweeper Joe McGowan, comes from deep in his heart. In 2004, Karen joined him and the rest of the Charles Dickens Festival family on the streets as Eliza Fairfax the Flower Lady. Karen loves the fact that everyone in the town gets behind the festival from the decorated shops, to

cook and bottle washer for the entire street character presentation. She also championed an early wish by festival
founder, Jeanne Garant, to have roving street plays and caroling groups set on a performance schedule taking place at the natural stages around the Village. As much as Karen and George have helped to create the heightened sense of community that the Dickens Festival represents, members of their own family have joined the group including their son Daniel, their grandson Cristofer Zamarelli and, as of last year, Cris’ younger brother Jason Rohan. This family event is truly a family affair for Karen and George. The couple also shares their lives with another group, Ye Pyrate Brotherhood, a pirate re-enactment/entertainment/ educational crew that makes presentations across the Isle of Long and the East Coast. Thank you, Karen and George, for lending all of your time and talent to help make our lives a bit more loving and fun through the Charles Dickens Festival.

Port Jefferson Free Library Cottage hosting ‘Frozen’-themed event The Port Jefferson Free Library’s Cottage, a historic building adjacent to the main library, is adding a new and exciting event for this year’s Charles Dickens Festival. The Cottage will be transformed into a “Frozen”-inspired destination that will tickle the fancy of young and old alike. Guests will have the opportunity to take a picture with “Snow Sisters” and any other interesting character from the Disney movie that might make an appearance. There will also be Frozen trivia questions and cherished music from Frozen. In addi-
tion, the Adult Reading Room in the original section of the main library will play host to Dickens era model trains depicting two of the earliest trains: DeWitt Clinton, named after the father of the Erie Canal and which made its maiden run August 9, 1831, and the Pegasus train that Dickens himself named because of its amazing speed for the day. The Friends of the Port Jefferson Free Library will be hosting a hot chocolate bar in the Victorian decorated room. There will also be musical entertainment.
Sweets in CookieLand Come one, come all to CookieLand! Danfords Hotel and Marina, Bayles Hall, will play host for the momentous CookieLand cookie-decorating event. The CookieLand space will be decked out with an elaborate holiday motif to welcome both the young and young at heart, offering an abundance of frosting and candy decorations in a myriad of styles and color options for the signature sugar and chocolate cookie decorating kits. Everything will be packaged for
carrying, with extra candy, frosting and hot chocolate, with marshmallows, of course, available for extra purchase. Brought to you by A Cake In Time, CookieLand will be open between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3. Special thanks to the Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine for sponsoring this event. Fees apply. Presented by: The Shipyard at Port Jeff Harbor, Luxury Rental Apartments

Mrs. Cratchit herself would approve as a gathering of helpers will be on hand to assist in assembling the crafty creations. Guaranteed to add a smile, a visit to Mrs. Cratchit’s Colorful Christmas Crafts event will help to usher in the holidays with handmade joy. Presented by: MAIA Salon Spa and Wellness

The fabulous Festival of Trees celebration
Hear ye, Hear ye! Take a look at our fantastic Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision expertly crafted and garnished … and they are not to be missed. New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English royal family until 1841 when Queen Victoria married Germanborn Prince Albert. From that time the decorating of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoity-toity to the hoi polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry

company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree… Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are
welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!” The Festival of Trees will be avail-
able to view at the Dickens Festival up through the end of December. Presented by Bridgehampton National Bank, Empire National Bank and People’s United Bank.

Festival parking
Parking, parking everywhere … seek and you shall absolutely find. We are once again featuring our own dedicated jitney bus to travel to parking lots to the south and east of downtown Port Jefferson. The jitney will carry festival visitors to and from all the Dickensian action. We are also encouraging visitors to park in the LIRR lot immediately south and east of the railroad tracks off Railroad Avenue. A quick walk up the stairs and over the bridge will bring you to the jitney stop. The Dickens parking committee will be posting official Dickens festival “jitney” parking signs for your convenience. The jitney will be running from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3. We are also supplying a special Dickens parking map in addition to the larger Dickens event map included with this special festival section. So, if you want to have more festival and less roaming, please take advantage of our outlying lots. For those of you who want to find a space closer, metered parking is in force for the Dickens weekend. At 25 cents per half hour, $2 buys you four hours of Dickens delights and all parking proceeds go to supporting the festival.
