Jinhae Gu Nature’s gift made me realize heaven is real, bursting with Marvelous colors and struck a brilliant glow, Jinhae Gu it never failed to impress, why consider going to heaven?

Small footsteps placed in the snow, Where they lead I do not know. Curiosity draws me closer and closer, Beckoning, inviting, tempting me further. Suddenly my mind has no control over me, My feet are racing along the tracks, Intricate weaving between the trees, But then I stop and stare, at the beauty that stands before me. A colossal olive tree, With delicate branches stretching way above me. Braided twists of crisp pitch-black bark Nothing like the ordinary, regardless Its familiarity is fondness. My searching eyes revert down to the roots, Like snakes slithering and combating for prey; Some are thick, some are hidden, But all lead to the great olive tree. I spot the faint imprints that led me to this sight, 6ORZO\ ÀOOLQJ ZLWK WKH VQRZà DNHV VZD\LQJ LQ the wind. The tracks abruptly stop at the roots Overwhelmed by curiosity, I circle round the wide trunk A little boy, staring at me with Deep brown eyes and dark slick hair. His eyes draw me closer, But he backs away in fear. I extend my hand to show my peace Reluctantly he places his petite hand atop my own. Holding our grasp for a while, Until a breathtaking phenomenon transpires. The clouds come apart, releasing the blue-grey skies. A tiny pea-sized speck of light Is released upon a branch, ever so slight. I hear a faint gasp not belonging to me. Our strength increasing with unity. And standing alongside each other, The boy and I link arms with one another. Wide-eyed, staring at the branch, We watch the Flower of Light begin its journey.

A message from the publisher When I was 8 years old, my family went on a summer vacation to a small town about an hour north of New York City called Central Valley. One night we went downtown for ice cream at the drugstore and were surprised to find the streets empty. When we walked to the firehouse, we saw the dispatcher sitting outside on a chair that was leaning against the building. “Where is everyone?” I asked. “Over at the Joneses,” he replied, indicating a house with a tilt of his head. “They just got one of them new television sets. Whole town’s watching Milton Berle.” The idea of an empty town sparked my imagination, so I wrote an article about it and submitted it to the community newspaper. How thrilled I was when the story appeared on the front page! Imagine, then, how thrilled I am years later to be able to make it possible for other students to be published. I hope you enjoy seeing your words (and art) in print as much as I did. And still do.

I am from Stony Brook, New York from the adventure ringing outside my door I am from the old noisy truck, And the three little birds outside my doorstep I’m from the laughter of cracking jokes on a warm summer day From the chocolate gooiness on my tongue after skiing on the snowy slopes I am from the swoosh of the net And the whip of the lacrosse stick I am from the rocking of the boat I’m from the summer sunset at Pop Pop’s house I’m from the smell of crayons in the new school year And the new sneakers to style I am from the roller coaster of life And the life to be lived The seventh grade to rock I am from the adventure of today And excitement of tomorrow I am from new adventures.
