There is a voice inside me. This voice is strong, brave, and courageous, Unlike me. I feel weak and small, Like the world is watching down on me. I feel like the waves in the sea will one day knock me down. But that voice in my head is what keeps me strong. It reminds me, “You’ve got to deal with it. Embrace your problems and your failures. Learn from your mistakes. Because no one is perfect, though they may look so. Sometimes we have to see beyond looks.” This voice guides me like the wind when I feel lost, lonely and afraid. This voice wants me to be like it, Courageous and brave so that I can be my true self. Everyone has a voice like this one. They are just waiting for the right moment to embrace their true selves

A message from the publisher When I was 8 years old, my family went on a summer vacation to a small town about an hour north of New York City called Central Valley. One night we went downtown for ice cream at the drugstore and were surprised to find the streets empty. When we walked to the firehouse, we saw the dispatcher sitting outside on a chair that was leaning against the building. “Where is everyone?” I asked. “Over at the Joneses,” he replied, indicating a house with a tilt of his head. “They just got one of them new television sets. Whole town’s watching Milton Berle.” The idea of an empty town sparked my imagination, so I wrote an article about it and submitted it to the community newspaper. How thrilled I was when the story appeared on the front page! Imagine, then, how thrilled I am years later to be able to make it possible for other students to be published. I hope you enjoy seeing your words (and art) in print as much as I did. And still do. — LEAH S. DUNAIEF

VXQÁ RZHUV rips and tears in the art with their faces by the frantic rubbing tilted up to the sky, of a plastic eraser. painted with a careful hand. the glorious day is smothered a warm, under a layer honey-golden tone of black paint, is spread across turning dawn to dusk. as a natural spotlight. bent wings, the squirrels, misshapen feathers, the worms,
the birds, all placed in the vast painted land that they call home. beauty is created, at the simplest and purest form
