Raindrops on Roses BY MADEENA JALILI
R.C. MURPHY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
GRADE 8
Rain dancing across the meadow, so light Droplets carrying wonders from the sky Roses dancing below, petals polite As the crystals meets the rose that is dry Glass raindrops twinkling like the fallen stars The rose like a golden jewel aglow Fragile petals like porcelain, no scars Holding water, so it won’t overflow A feeling of calmness, flowing throughout Roses so perfect, nothing with a flaw Petals dancing like a flame all about Golden globe in the sky, gazing in awe But the sky has shed a million tears Beneath it all, flaws hide where no one hears

Why, who makes much of a miracle? As to me I know of nothing else but miracles, Whether I walk the streets of Setauket, Or stride along the surface of the Earth, Or perceive the luminous big star when I awake, Or strolling through every opportunity put forth , Or breathe the freshness of the air, Or glimpse at the beautifulness of the people I love, Or feel the emotions of a human being brought every second of life, Or talk and exchange glances with everyone around me, Or have technology to be able to communicate with the world, Or touching everything an eye can see, Or birds chirping in their wildest most thoughts, Or the deer eating in the forest, Or dogs barking loudly, being protective of their kin, 2U WKH PDJQLÀ FHQW LUUHJXODULW\ RI WKH ZKLWH VRIW clouds in the busy sky on a graceful morning, Or the drop of the star becoming a quiet, dazzling satellite at night; These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles, The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place. To me every second of every day is a miracle, Every animal is a miracle, Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same, Every foot of the interior swarms with the same. To me life is a continual miracle, The people that walk-the animals-the plants that grow- the cities with millions of lives in them, What stranger miracles are there?
A message from the publisher When I was 8 years old, my family went on a summer vacation to a small town about an hour north of New York City called Central Valley. One night we went downtown for ice cream at the drugstore and were surprised to find the streets empty. When we walked to the firehouse, we saw the dispatcher sitting outside on a chair that was leaning against the building. “Where is everyone?” I asked. “Over at the Joneses,” he replied, indicating a house with a tilt of his head. “They just got one of them new television sets. Whole town’s watching Milton Berle.” The idea of an empty town sparked my imagination, so I wrote an article about it and submitted it to the community newspaper. How thrilled I was when the story appeared on the front page! Imagine, then, how thrilled I am years later to be able to make it possible for other students to be published. I hope you enjoy seeing your words (and art) in print as much as I did. And still do.

Don’t You See
BY JULIA SEROCKI NASSAKEAG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
GRADE 6
Plastic both here and there, Why is it everywhere? It doesn’t even seem like anyone cares. Everyone seems so sarcastic. Don’t they see all of this plastic? The small creatures being born, Don’t they see that the ocean is being torn. The ocean is smooth and shiny, Don’t they see the turtles? So sick and so tiny. Help this earth before it’s too late. Before all sea life receives its fate.

Cousins
BY EMMA PARRELLA
R. C. MURPHY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
GRADE 8
When years have passed And we are all grown up, The leaves will change And begin to pileup. We tried to refrain But our worst fears came true, We have gotten older And have much to go through. But then I remember The way we spent, Our summers together And how much they meant. Racing around The pool each day, Finishing our dinner With enough time to play. Singing to music With so much to say, Wishing this feeling Would never go away. Take these things and Put them together, Makes a lifelong relationship To last forever. So, when years have passed And we are all grown up, We will always remain The cousins club. We may be older Than we were before, But nothing will change Forever more.

The Lonely Moon BY CONNOR O’BRIEN R. C. MURPHY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADE 8
Bleak chilling darkness haunts the eerie night; The sea of inky blackness blinds your eye, But there is comforting unearthly light A shine that illuminates the whole sky. The gracious gifter of light neglected While their companion is showered with praise Surrounded by stars who are perfected It feels worthless next to their striking blaze. Worn out from the pushes and pulls of life When it greets the world people seems to hide. Do others think it is clutching a knife All of its hopes and dreams seem to have died. The Sun is loved and can make people swoon, Why do I have to be The Lonely Moon?

The Glory of Summer BY JOHN MARGULIES
R.C. MURPHY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADE 9
This hot summer, that inspired me to write, It’s hot days, with the strong humid heat, Invading my mind through day and night, Always passing by so fast with glee. :LWK LQVHFWV PRVTXLWRHV WLFNV DQG ÁLHV Nightlife so high and mighty, liveliness so visceral. A new world arises by the days of July, With free time so plenty, and with schoolwork so pitiful. How do I love summer? Let me count the ways. I love having fun, and vacationing at the beach. 7KLQNLQJ RI UHOD[LQJ QRZ ÀOOV P\ GD\V But until the days of June it is still out of reach. But, I still must write away with a vital heart, So remember these words whilst those days are apart

What is it?
BY MADISON BERRETTA
NASSAKEAG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADE 6
What is it about my Papa? What is it about my papa that makes me miss him so much? His smile and booming laugh? Maybe his warm hugs And naps on his chest? His magic chair That allows him to have anything he desires? To see him again Oh the things I would do Just to look him in the eyes And tell him “I love you most” While he says “I love you more” Just like we did when he was still here But Even though he’s up in the clouds With a pocket full of treats For any dog that trots along I know he’s watching us On the bridge of his boat steering our lives Even in times we least expect it He’s here Sailing by
