Reputation For Excellence. Commitment To Value.

Port Jeff Village looks to install new parking lot BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With parking weighing heavy on the minds of the Port Jefferson Village board, the village mayor and parking administrator have announced plans for a new parking lot on Barnum Avenue. The town has made headway in creating a 44-space parking lot on Barnum Avenue, just after the turn on Roessner Lane that goes toward Rocketship Park. The parking lot is going before the village planning board March 14, and Mayor Margot Garant said she hopes to break ground sometime in the fall. The village acquired the space in 2017 in buying a home in that location, which was later demolished. The lot is expected to be partly timed and metered, though Garant said the village has yet to nail down the precise nature of the parking stalls. She added there will be no overnight parking, and the times on stalls could be around four to six hours. Like other

lots, residents will be able to park for free with their residential parking passes. “We’re doing that primarily to support Rocketship Park and the ball field, as the park is a very popular spot, and to support our recreational and commercial district, of course,” Garant said. If the planning board approves the site plans, the village will need to put the construction out to bid, and they were looking at a timeline of about six to eight months before construction is completed. The lot is currently gravel, and Garant said she has informed village parks department workers they are allowed to park their vehicles on the gravel lot. The meters on the village’s other metered parking lots are due to be active on March 15, though the village board will be making a decision whether to delay opening the meters until May 1 at their March 18 board meeting. This came after requests by village retail groups in order to incentivize shopping in the leaner months of the year.

New business in PJ Village expects to showcase local artists

“This way if it sells you pay, if it doesn’t you don’t pay,” she said. “This is a talented group of people that is here locally.” Items in the store are expected to be changed out every 90 days, and the owner expects to host several community events after hours, including giving artist the opportunity to showcase their entire line, doing crocheting classes, book signings, storytelling and podcasts. Her website will be a digital version of the store, showcasing the artists work so those unable to come into the store can still see the artist’s work. “What motivates me is the energy that these people have,” Walker said. “It’s said you lift yourself by lifting others, and that’s what this is going to do.”

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A shelf can be a curious thing. When walking into a stranger’s house, what you may find on the shelves, whether it be pictures, books, art, can tell you much about that person. In a small shop located at 218 E. Main St., one local woman is trying to get others to discover something about local artists through the shelves she’s built to showcase their work. Diana Walker, a 25-year resident of Mount Sinai, is planning to open a consignment shop called The Shelf at East Main, a new spot that will showcase artists and entrepreneurs talents in a way many artists rarely have the opportunity to do so. “To classify it, it is an artisan market,” Walker said. “The aim of this is to lift others through community connection, and also educate the community on the talent that is here locally.” The idea has been sitting in Walker’s head for several years, since she helped her son Kyle arrange an art show in the Port Jefferson Village Center for him and a group of fellow artists. During the show she overheard several conversations about the artists who were desperately

looking for ways to break into the art scene. “Talking to the artists I heard, ‘It’s so hard to find places to exhibit,’ and ‘It’s so hard to sell,” she said. “I thought, wouldn’t it be nice where there was a place where they could sell their work, we could have events more regularly, to get their work out there not only to buy but just to experience?” As of March 1, Walker had 32 artists signed onto the store, though not all will be present

when it comes time for the grand opening April 19. She’s proud that many of the artists she expects to showcase come from all walks of life. She said a veteran has signed on to showcase his work, several older retired folks and even children as young as 9 years old. The new shop owner said since artists already have a tough time showcasing their work, often not having the funds to do so, she will take a percentage of each sale.

Port Jeff health care worker indicted An East Setauket man faces a multicount indictment for allegedly receiving more than $400,000 through insurance fraud. On Feb. 28, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini’s (D) office announced the unsealing of a 70-count indictment against former health care worker Joseph Basile, 50. It is alleged he fraudulently received more than $400,000 through a health insurance fraud scheme where he would file claims for unperformed procedures and list a former employer, a colorectal surgeon, on the forms. “This was an act of pure greed,” Sini said. “He used his knowledge of the health care insurance system to illegally pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars, money that would have otherwise been used to care for people who were sick and in need.” Basile was charged with insurance fraud in the first degree, three counts of health care fraud in the second degree, two counts of grand larceny in the second degree, health care fraud in the third degree, grand larceny in the third degree, scheme to defraud in the first degree and 60 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree. Basile was employed as an office manager for a private health care practice by a colorectal surgeon in Port Jefferson before the practice

NOTICE OF SALE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to a Final Judgment of Foreclosure dated August 30, 2018, and entered in the Office of the Clerk of the County of Suffolk, wherein U.S. BANK TRUST NATIONAL ASSOCIATION AS TRUSTEE OF THE WF VICTORIA GRANTOR TRUST 20162, is the Plaintiff and BELLE MELINE MEARS EDSALL; ET AL. are the Defendants. closed in 2013, according to the DA’s office. From January 2014 through July 2016, Basile allegedly fraudulently filed insurance claims for medical procedures, including colorectal surgeries, to Empire BlueCross BlueShield in excess of $3.8 million on behalf of himself and others, listing his former employer as the provider. The medical procedures had not been performed. Basile then allegedly forged the signature of his former employer and deposited the checks into his own account. The more than $400,000 received was paid by both the insurance company and John T. Mather Hospital. The former health care worker also allegedly filed fraudulent insurance claims on behalf of another individual whose health care is provided through Teamsters Local 1205’s welfare fund, according to Sini’s office. Basile allegedly stole more than $3,000 from the fund by filing false health care insurance claims. Basile was released on $5,000 bond and is due back in court March 12. If convicted of the top count, he faces a maximum sentence of eight and one-third to 25 years in prison. Port Jefferson Village

Port Jefferson and Stony Brook partner for transport into village BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Port Jeff Jitney will soon bear the Stony Brook University logo and bring SBU Seawolves directly into the heart of the village. A new program, which offers a free mobility loop for riders between the university and the Village of Port Jefferson, will start its first pilot season March 7. The village will be repurposing the 20-seat jitney bus for this program. “We consider Stony Brook University a true partner with the village and an economic engine,” said Port Jeff Mayor Margot Garant. “This program will bring students and faculty to the village in an efficient way with no cost to the rider, offsetting the average Uber fee of well over $13 one way. This program also greatly helps with our goals to free up our parking lots — something we constantly look at in our managed parking program.” The loop was first presented to village trustees at their Feb. 4 meeting by Kevin Wood, the village parking administrator, who said the program will be administered by the Port Jefferson Parking & Mobility Resource Center. The program will cost the village approximately $13,000, though the village is looking toward the university to pick up the promotional costs.

The loop will start at the Port Jefferson Rail Road Station along Main Street in what’s known as Upper Port, before heading into Arden Plaza in the village, continuing up West Broadway down Route 25A, stopping at Stop & Shop in East Setauket. Once on the Stony Brook campus, it will make stops at the main circle loop, West Campus and the Chapin Apartments before coming back

down Route 25A and ending at the train station. The pilot program will run until May 23 and have times starting on Thursdays from 3 to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wood said one does not need to show ID to enter the bus; otherwise, the program is free for students and university faculty.

The village and university are hosting a kickoff event March 7 to celebrate the first run of the bus. The event will also showcase tracking of the bus with a phone app, which Wood said should help cut down on frustration in knowing when it will arrive. The free app, Passio Go!, is currently available on both the Android Play store and the iTunes marketplace. The existing Port Jefferson Jitney has seen its share of riders in the past, such as the Friday and Saturday of the Sept. 15 weekend during the Dragon Boat Day Festival and the weekend of the annual Charles Dickens Festival, when the jitney had a ridership of 164 and 125, respectively, last year. On off weeks, the jitney has seen a low of 27 riders such as in the weekend of Sept. 8 and an average of approximately 70 riders in 2018. Wood said while the idea has been around for about four years, he has been working diligently on it for the past four months. He said he expects the program might help rejuvenate the jitney’s ridership and mitigate some of the village’s parking issues. “It’s a pilot, so we will see,” Wood said in an email. “It will certainly help students and faculty — there is no cost to ride. It will help free up our parking lots too.” More information and a link to the bus locater app can be found on http://www.pjshuttle.com/.

Port Jeff Boy Scout builds magnetic marble track for LI Explorium BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Matthew Chan, a Comsewogue High School senior and Boy Scout in Troop 354, has volunteered at the Long Island Explorium since seventh grade. Now in his last year of high school, he took his help one step further when he constructed a magnetic ball track for the Port Jefferson nonprofit. Boy Scouts looking to gain their Eagle Scout recognition often provide a service to the community, whether it’s reconstructing fences, planting trees, building benches or painting old buildings. The Comsewogue High School senior took it a step further and constructed a magnetic ball run at the Long Island Explorium. It allows children to create their own looping track where they can send a small marble careening down a path of their own design. “I thought about how I could make my project very hands on,” Chan said. In order for a Boy Scout to make the rank of Eagle Scout, he first has to perform a service project in the community. The Port Jefferson Station resident used his Eagle Scout project as

an opportunity to aid the explorium even further. Three years ago, the explorium underwent renovations, including installing two large steel sheets on one of the walls. This was all part of an idea hatched by Angeline Judex, the executive director of the explorium, and Chan to create this ball run. “The Explorium is always pleased to work with Boys and Girls Scouts to help them develop skills and experience to become leaders of the future,” said Judex. “Matt’s project added tremendous value to the Explorium. The giant magnetic ball run helps promote STEM learning in a fun and engaging manner that is enjoyed by

visitors of all ages.” The project took quite a bit of time to come about. While Chan proposed the project initially in November of 2017, it took until May 2018 for him to gather all the materials together. In June of that year, he gathered around 15 other Boy Scouts to help him construct the track. The Scouts drilled holes in planks of wood where they could affix the magnets, then drilled holes in PVC pipe, some pieces cut horizontally in half. When it was all installed by late 2018, Chan got to witness firsthand children using, playing and learning with his creation. “I think it encourages a lot of creativity,” he said. “It trains kids to think for themselves and create their own solutions.” After years of effort, Chan made Eagle Scout in February. The senior is expecting to graduate come June. From there he is looking forward to attending The College at Brockport where he will enroll in its nursing program. “The Boy Scouts has a lot to do with first aid and life saving,” the Eagle Scout said. “I was a lifeguard, and I used to be very interested in first aid and health. I thought helping people through nursing would be a very good career path for me.”

Editorial

Celebrating women March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the feminine icons who have left their mark on the world. However, when it comes to learning about accomplished women, in many ways, people need to educate themselves. A recent article from the Smithsonian Magazine cited a report from the virtual National Women’s History Museum released in 2017 titled “Where Are the Women?” The study examined the status of women’s history in state-level social studies standards seen in the K-12 curriculum and found only 178 women. This find was compared to 559 men found in the same scholastic standards. Fortunately, while school systems catch up with including the countless impressive women in history missing in their curricula, many libraries and museums offer programs dedicated to Women’s History Month offering information about the lives of so many amazing and impactful women who may not be included in a high school textbook. Of course, there are options to increase your knowledge, such as digging a little deeper on the library shelves or the internet to find out information beyond the frequently told stories of abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, civil rights activist Rosa Parks or 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Those women are out there and are not as hidden as one may think. We’ve come up with just a few powerful women who may not be referenced enough, or not at all, in the history books. Elizabeth Jennings Graham was an African-American teacher who in 1854, when Manhattan streetcars were mostly segregated, fought for the right to ride in any car. She won her case in New York courts in 1855, and by 1865 all New York City transit systems were desegregated. Margaret Hamilton was the lead software engineer for NASA’s Apollo program. Along with her team, she wrote the code algorithms for the spacecraft’s in-flight software. Apollo 11 went on to become the first mission to successfully land humans on the moon. Sonia Maria Sotomayor, born in the Bronx, become the first Latina and Hispanic justice in the Supreme Court of the U.S. when President Barack Obama (D) appointed her to associate justice in 2009. Digging even further into history and across the sea, there is Ching Shih, a female pirate leader, who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s. History has remembered Shih as a fierce warrior who commanded more than 300 Chinese sailing ships, defeating Qing dynasty Chinese officials and Portuguese and British bounty hunters. She was so successful she managed to force the Chinese government to grant her a pardon. Unlike the careers of other famous pirates in the Caribbean, she died peacefully in her bed. Stories like these and others of women’s impact on the world and our everyday lives are out there waiting to be discovered. We encourage our readers to go out and find those stories or perhaps even make history themselves.

Letters to the editor

Democrats should support border wall I have a good idea for all the Democratic, anti-President Donald Trump (R) letter writers who believe there is no crisis at our borders. Why don’t they all go to areas in our country that have “no walls” with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D), U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and all the rest of the Democratic hopefuls for president and

actually observe what’s going on and talk to the border patrol, homeland security and immigration officials and officers? Maybe then they will stop the rhetoric and possibly see how the Democratic leaders are using this crisis for political reasons, especially since they did agree that there was a crisis when President Obama

(D) was in office. Let’s actually keep our country safe from illegal immigrants that come into our country causing all types of crimes against our citizens, and possibly begin to think beyond political parties. Richard Esopa Miller Place

This past January at the state budget address New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) rolled out his policy proposal to potentially legalize the recreational sale and use of marijuana. In his fancy PowerPoint presentation, Cuomo highlighted the benefits from legalizing the recreational sale and use of marijuana. He proposed that the policy would increase jobs for growers, distributors, retailers and the tax revenue — the root of all evil — generated by approving this policy. Cuomo claims that the revenue from legal marijuana could generate up to $300 million annually once the policy is in full effect. What was left out of Cuomo’s plan are the risks on the general public that will follow if this policy is approved by the state. Is Cuomo dismissing the fact that marijuana is a mind-altering substance? Peer-reviewed studies have shown that marijuana use increases the risk of psychiatric disorders. Scientifically, we know that the human brain does not fully develop until the ages of 25-26. By Cuomo saying that it is perfectly legal to start recreationally smoking marijuana when you turn 21, he is basically telling you to start using a

mind-altering substance that may cause a negative impact on the growth of your adult brain. Further implications of this proposal include having an effect on parents, and on treatment professionals who are educating their children and clients on the potential dangers of marijuana use. I am both a parent of three daughters under the age of 21 and a treatment professional in the field of alcohol and substance abuse. I personally would be opposed to tell my daughters that at 21 years old they have the legal right to use a substance that I know could place them at risk to develop a psychiatric disorder, have a decrease in motivation, and possibly develop a dependence for the drug which could lead to the exploration of other mindaltering substances. Of course, supporters of this policy proposal will argue that alcohol, cigarettes and prescription opioids are legal substances that pose a health risk, but also generate revenue. As a society, have we not learned from our past mistakes? Look at what has happened since Purdue Pharma said back in the late 1990s that OxyContin

had no potential for abuse. The heroin epidemic we face today, and millions of dollars spent fighting it, are because of the mismanagement and misinformed information that was provided to the public. How is this policy going to help the current state of health care? With health care systems wanting to improve overall health outcomes from a medical and behavioral health integration model, how does the legalization of recreational marijuana help cut medical and behavioral health care costs? One could argue allowing marijuana to be used recreationally would increase the risks of individuals developing a psychiatric or medical illness, which could lead to poorer health outcomes and increased health care costs. Hopefully Cuomo can see past the dollar signs in his eyes when dreaming about this proposal, and see the potential risks and dangers that the approval of this policy can have on our state in years to come. Joseph Catalano Graduate student School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University

Push back against marijuana legislation

Read legislation before casting a vote Today’s generation in U.S. Congress along with members of the New York State Senate and Assembly could learn much from the late Idaho Republican Sen. James McClure who passed away eight years ago on Feb. 26, 2011. His claim to fame on Capitol Hill was for 18 years, he read every word of every bill before voting on it. For many years, he signed his own mail. Fast forward to today, did members of Congress take an Evelyn Wood speedreading class to absorb the hundreds of pages contained in a previous temporary stopgap spending bill along with other so-called “emergency legislation” passed in the dead of night? Members received these items with only hours before being asked to vote up or down. Only lobbyists

along with key congressional staff members employed by the House and Senate leadership teams, who actually wrote the fine print within the many hundreds of pages on behalf of their bosses, had any idea of the details buried in the actual contents. There should be a seven-dayminimum time-out period. This would provide adequate time for members of any legislative body but also ordinary citizens, the media and independent good government watchdog groups the opportunity to understand all of the contents contained in any proposed bill. Everyone would also have the opportunity under an open process to comment and discuss the merits or

consequences before others vote up or down for adoption. Ditto for reading the thousands of daily automated robo letters sent to constituents, who have taken their own personal time to write. Liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, we would all be better off if members of Congress, the state Legislature and New York City Council members would take time to actually read, line by line and openly debate in public any proposed legislation before voting. Their legislative actions impact both our economic and civil liberties. Future generations have to pay for and live with the consequences. Larry Penner Great Neck

The ongoing search for ‘just right’

W

hen my daughter drives to a crosswalk and a pedestrian is crossing, she feels terrible if the person on foot starts to jog or sprint, pushing him or herself to move more quickly so my daughter can continue on her way. My daughter also gets annoyed if the person suddenly slows down. Life is full of those “just right” moments. If our hot chocolate is D. None too hot, we risk of the above burning the roofs of our mouths. If BY DANIEL DUNAIEF it’s too cold, it doesn’t have the desired effect of warming us up.

It’s what makes the Goldilocks story so relatable. The father’s bed is too hard, the mother’s is too soft, but the baby’s bed is just right. When my family searched for new beds, we collapsed into one mattress after another, imagining a good night’s sleep, just the right book or a good movie with perfectly balanced sound. Most salespeople spend their careers trying to find the right fit for someone, whether it’s a shoe, bed, car, house or any of the myriad items that fill my email box overnight while I sleep. Life involves the constant search for just right. If we won every game we played, the competition wouldn’t be strong enough and we wouldn’t push ourselves to get better. A movie with absolutely no adversity can be charming, but it can also wear thin quickly, as the lack of suspense can lead us to wonder whether a dystopian conflict is pending.

Even in the world of friendships, we search for just-right friends. We generally don’t seek friends who want to talk to us all the time, or who can barely make time for us. We also don’t want friends who agree with everything we say. A few people, public figures and otherwise, seem eager to find people who reinforce their brilliance regularly. I would prefer to find people with viewpoints that differ from my own, which force me to defend my ideas and allow me incorporate new perspectives into my thinking or behavioral patterns. Just right for any one person can and often is different from just right for someone else, which enhances the notion that we can find someone who is a great match or complement for us. Ideally, the non-just-right shoes, weather, girlfriends, boyfriends or jobs teach us more about ourselves. Why, we wonder, didn’t that work? Once we figure that out, we have a better chance at understanding what does. Sometimes, like the bed that doesn’t feel

comfortable at first but eventually becomes the only one that affords us a quality sleep, we grow into a role and find that the previous tasks or conversations, which had seemed so odious initially, are a much better fit than we originally thought, as a result of the changes in ourselves. And, as Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, “There’s the rub.” The pursuit of just right in any context can change as we age. Our high school tastes in music, clothing, cars, houses, jobs or any other choices can and do change with each landmark reunion, making it more difficult to know what we want or what we’re searching for. While I share my daughter’s guilt when a pedestrian rushes across the crosswalk to let me go or prevents me from running down that person, I’m not as frustrated by someone who slows down. I try to determine, watching that person pause in the middle of the street, how this might be a “just right” moment for the pedestrian.

Hold on, winter is not all doom and gloom

T

his is the time of mixed seasonal emotions. On the one hand, the deep cabin fever that sets in with February is still with us. Winter is upon the land, the trees are skeletons, the bushes just sticks and the lawns an anemic greenish brown. Even the evergreens, instead of being a lusty hunter green, are more like a drab olive, branches hangBetween ing dutifully but you and me limply, to remind us that all color BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF has not entirely disappeared from view. That’s probably also an apt description of our souls, suffering from winter’s darkness and yearning for color and warmth. Patches of

snow, remnants of the recent storm, have also lost their luster and serve only to nudge us that winter still has us in its grip. So do the ever widening potholes. But — and this is only a tiny “but” — March is here. That means we have made it through the coldest, darkest months. This weekend, we will switch to daylight savings time, so those who work past 6 o’clock in the evening will not be stumbling out from their stores and offices into the darkness. There will still be evidence of some day left. Remember, though, to drive with extra care during the week following the change, for statistics tell us there are more car incidents after losing even one hour on one’s biological clock. With the advent of March, if we hold on three weeks, comes the official start of spring. Now we know that Mother Nature doesn’t check the calendar, and we can get wicked snowstorms after spring officially begins. But that likelihood is less and would be a grand finale rather than the beginning of a long siege. So there is the smallest whiff of hope

for the return of better weather. Also if you look closely at the bushes, you can see buds. Buds! That means flowers will be coming, and leaves, the bright green leaves of early spring. If we really want to get delirious about color, we can trek to Philadelphia to drink in the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show, now happening at the Pennsylvania Convention Center until Sunday, March 10. This year’s theme is Flower Power, celebrating the contribution of flowers to our lives. Sometimes on a winter day when the sun is shining, the sky is cloudless and intensely blue and the air, with its low humidity, crisp and invigorating. For those who ski downhill or through the woods, snowshoe or ice skate or even take a walk on a country road, the scene is poetic, an artist’s dream. To come inside after such activity and be greeted with the scent of hearty soup or freshly baked chocolate chip cookies is a treat most keenly appreciated when the temperature is low. As the season turns, and we think about putting away the shovels and salt — not yet

though! — we can also cheer ourselves on a bit by conjuring up the benefits of winter. What are they, you ask? Well, no mosquitoes for one. And the ticks have disappeared. No lawn to mow, although we do sometimes have to shovel snow, so that’s probably only a trade-off at best. We can gain a few pounds and hide beneath our tunics and sweaters until the change in wardrobe forces us to acknowledge the slothful truth. There are no emergency calls to fix the air conditioner in winter. But the boiler is no angel either. It always seems to give way on the coldest nights. A dark and cold winter night can be cheered with a crackling fire, as we sit before the fireplace sipping a favorite beverage and exchanging deep thoughts with a loved one. Even the dog seems to enjoy the warmth and glow, curling up at our feet. But we are willing to cast all that away for the excitement of spring, with its birdsong, flowers and warmth. The return of light, longer with each day, is a magical salve for our moods. Just for a little while longer, dear friends, hang in there.

Snow and water

When snow came to the Village of Port Jefferson over the night of March 3, many expected things to be worse. Instead the white gives the opportunity for us to see the water in both the freeze and the thaw. It’s a welcome sight, knowing it could have been worse. Port Jeff is a harbor town through and through. Its history is embedded with the memories of sailors and shipwrights who must have feared the snows as much as us, but for different reasons. We here on the North Shore, despite the difficulties of removing the white from our driveways, can instead take in the sights and enjoy the solemn and solitary nature of cold and frost.
