Surgery center coming to Port Jeff; doctor calls it ‘win-win-win’ By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com North Shore residents in need of a surgical procedure will soon have a new, more convenient option that eliminates the need for extended hospital stays, long searches for parking and unnecessary treks through vast buildings. The New York State Department of Health approved plans for the Port Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center to be located on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station at a meeting of the State’s Public Health and Health Planning Council Aug. 4. The project, which is estimated to cost nearly $10.6 million, will establish a freestanding outpatient facility for surgical procedures with six operating rooms. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital will own about a quarter of the center, with 19 individual physicians making up 70 percent of the ownership structure. Doctors involved in the plans, which go as far back as five years, are excited for the possibilities the center will bring. “There’s a massive need because it’s more comfortable for the patients, they’re less expensive to run [than full hospitals] and it’s less expensive for the hospital,” Port Jefferson-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Fracchia said in a phone inter-

He called the center a “win-win-win” because of the benefits it will create for patients, insurance companies and Mather Hospital. Sending patients with ailments treatable at another site out of the hospital will also allow Mather more space for

those who require a hospital stay. Fracchia is serving as a treasurer for the project as well. The Port Jefferson Station center will handle procedures in ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, general surgery, neurosurgery and otolaryngology. “It’s a more comfortable, homey type of facility,” orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian McGinley said in an interview. McGinley is the president of the Port Jefferson Station proj-
ect. Both McGinley and Fracchia stressed the improvement the facility will make in convenience and cost savings for patients. McGinley added that the center will be held to the same high standards that are associated with Mather Hospital. He said the centers tend to be cleaner than hospitals with a far lower risk of infections like MRSA. Pinnacle III, a company based in Colorado that specializes in establishing ambulatory surgery centers nationwide, has assisted in developing more than 40 centers across the United States and will play a role in creating the Port Jefferson Station site. It will be the first Pinnacle III center in New York, and according to Pinnacle III President and CEO Robert Carrera, New York is one of the states with the greatest need for more surgery centers. Lisa Austin, the company’s vice president, estimated that the cost of procedures at surgery centers is about 33 percent less than at traditional hospitals. Carrera, Austin, Fracchia and McGinley all speculated that ambulatory surgery centers could be a wave of the future in health care, especially in New York. “Things have changed — you don’t see anyone building new hospitals,” Fracchia said. New York currently has 116 ambulatory surgery centers, though plans for more are popping up in addition to the Port Jefferson Station location. Fracchia said he anticipates ground being broken on the site within the next week or so, and the goal is for the doors to open by the winter of 2017.

Stony Brook, Mount Sinai team up to expand science centers By Talia amorosano Two major medical institutions have agreed to team up, and the partnership could lead to big scientific breakthroughs. In order to create more academic research opportunities and streamline and expand clinical care initiatives, Stony Brook Medicine and Mount Sinai Health System have entered into a comprehensive affiliation agreement. The change will promote interinstitution collaboration encompassing all five of Stony Brook’s Health Science schools, Stony Brook University Hospital, all 25 academic departments of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System facilities and Medical School, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, inclusive of seven hospitals and an expanding ambulatory network. Facilitators of the partnership believe that the expansion of clinical trials and research opportunities for both institutions will prompt research that could lead to major discoveries, like in treatment and understanding of disease. Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University, said the alliance will make use of the strengths of each individual institution. In a press release, he noted Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine for its strong biomedical, clinical research and health policy expertise and Stony Brook University for its advanced mathematics, high-performance computing, and physical and chemical science departments to illustrate the point that these institutions can accomplish more to-
gether than each can do alone. “In the long term, we’re going to roll out more and more in the way of clinical interactions,” said Kaushansky, who mentioned Stony Brook’s recent recruitment of two new cardiac surgeons from Mount Sinai. “We don’t do heart transplants, but Mount Sinai does.” He emphasized the new potential for patients to seek services from either hospital. In fact, joint research programs on biomedical engineering, medicinal chemistry science, neurology and more are currently in the works. In terms of education, university students will now be afforded the unique opportunity to take classes offered on either or both campuses, and participate in a variety of summer programs. The two schools plan to facilitate joint graduate and medical educational programs in a wider range of subjects, and have agreed to invest a collaborative $500,000 for the development of challenging pilot programs. “The joint pilots in research have immense promise to advance health at the most exciting time in the biomedical sciences, including advanced computational, bioinformatic and engineering approaches,” said Lina Obeid, M.D., dean for research and vice dean for scientific affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “Stony Brook Medicine and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai are two powerhouses of research that when partnered will definitely yield more than just the sum of their parts.” Other institution leaders expressed similar enthusiasm about the affiliation, which was effective upon signing, and many have verbalized

Davis, president and chief executive officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, said that together, Mount Sinai and Stony Brook can create changes in medicine. Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. agreed. “Each institution has so much to offer,” he said. “This is an opportunity that will prove to be beneficial to all — now and in the future — as we explore and grow.” Looking ahead, Kaushansky said that Stony Brook has more affiliation agreements in the works, contingent upon state approval.
“We are working very hard with our friends in the state of New York to get approval for affiliation with Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport,” he said. Also pending is a potential partnership with John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. “In April, Mather Hospital asked a number of health care systems — us included — whether they were interested in affiliating, and we said yes,” Kaushansky said. “We made a proposal to the Mather hospital board.” He said Mather was supposed to decide in June, and said Mount Sinai is still waiting.

He was arrested in Rocky Point and charged with two counts of petit larceny.
Arsonist burns cars
At about 5 a.m. Aug. 21, an unknown person poured a liquid on a 2002 Nissan and a 2006 Honda parked outside of a home on South Bicycle Path in Selden, and then lit the cars on fire, police said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Hard-headed
On Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 21, a man was knocked to the ground, hit his head on the pavement, got back on his feet momentarily, stumbled and hit his head on a wall, collapsed to the ground and was kicked in the head by an unknown person, police said. The suspect fled the scene.
One-stop theft
A computer, clothing items and a Dyson vacuum cleaner were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 3 p.m. Aug. 20, according to police.
Ungrateful house guests
Jewelry and money were stolen from a home on Ringneck Lane in Setauket at about 10 a.m. Aug. 18 after people inside the home answered the door and let the suspects in, police said. —ComPileD by alex PetrosKi

SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800342-3736 or visit the Department’s website at www.dfs. ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. 293 8/18 4x ptr ACCESSORY APARTMENT REVIEW BOARD TOWN OF BROOKHAVEN Pursuant to the provisions of section 85-201 of the Building Ordinance of the Town of Brookhaven, notice is hereby given that the Accessory Apartment Review Board of the Town of Brookhaven will hold a public hearing at Town Hall, One Independence Hill, Farmingville, NY, at 6p.m. on 09/01/2016 AA018174 RICHARDS RONALD 175 AVONDALE AVENUE CENTEREACH NY 11720 AA018501 MURRAY TINA J 2 QUEEN DR SOUND BEACH NY 11789 AA018647 MICHAELS ANGELA M & MICHELLE 66 MORRIS AVE LAKE GROVE NY 11755 AA018656 LOCURTO STEVEN & MUSI KERRI 7 HILLBERRY LN HOLBROOK NY 11741 AA018673 DUFF ERIC 14 MARK ST PORT JEFF STA NY 11776 AA018677 ROBISCHUNG JOHN 30 GRACE CT RONKONKOMA NY 11779 AA018684 PERSAUD NELAWATEE & PERSAUD ROMIN 1 LYNN STREET CENTEREACH NY 11720 AA018703 FILION LUZ & SANTOS ALEXIS 12 KENSINGTON WAY PORT JEFF STA NY 11776

Port Jefferson’s second Heritage Weekend was funded in part by a grant from the gardiner Foundation. The event celebrates the village’s historic 18th century roots.
Grants fund historic projects By Desirée Keegan Desirée@tbrnewspapers.com Thousands of dollars have made their way to North Shore historical nonprofits, which will help continue to preserve Long Island’s rich history and educate others on it. The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation funds Long Island’s history-based 501(c)(3)s, museums and universities to help with object conservation, historical preservation, education programs and exhibits. The organization was established in memory of Gardiner’s Island, a part of East Hampton town. “The foundation grants have become highly completive,” Executive Director Kathryn Curran said. “For this round, the board reviewed 43 applicants that covered every form of historic outreach. Projects included restorations, exhibitions, programs and collection digitization.” The Port Jefferson Harbor Educational and Arts Conservancy received $16,354.09 for it’s annual Heritage Weekend festivities. According to Nicole Christian, a consultant for grant writing for Port Jefferson Village, about 50 percent of the funding from the weekend came from the grant. “The larger, more impactful exhibits and reenactments that would have lasting public benefit, that’s what they supported,” she said. “We made sure that we tailored a lot of the activities that you see with the cars and the beach scene — we made sure that it all weaves together to celebrate the history of Long Island, particularly the 18th century.” All 19 locations around the village that hosted the event covered a particular time period in Long Island’s history. According to Christian, the funding helped Port Jefferson be able to create a larger and grander event than would have originally been possible. “We had all levels of recreational activities here,” she said. “We’re hoping that [visitors took] away a greater appreciation for Long Island’s role in 18th century history, the colonial period, the Revolutionary War, a recreational pastime. People don’t know that [Port Jefferson was] a magnet of recreation for all families.” The Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson also received grant money, totaling $22,000 for restoration purposes. The 3rd NY Regiment Long Island Companies was awarded $12,000 to
substitute payment customarily made by collaborators, host sites and venues during the campaign season, allowing those organization to apply those resources to other priorities associated with their missions. The Regiment partakes in re-enactments to educate Long Islanders on the Revolutionary War. “They are quite an extraordinary group of volunteers who perform a vital role in helping our county’s residents and visitors get a very personal education about colonial life and the role Long Island played in the Revolutionary War,” Richard Barons, the executive director of the East Hampton Historical Society, said. Friends of Science East Inc., more commonly known as Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in Shoreham, received $17,500 for capacity-building technology and $3,800 for collections care. According to board of directors President Jane Alcorn, the funding will be used to survey the property, especially the lab building and power base, to study its historic nature — identify which parts are historic, have architectural drawings done, and figure out which parts are critical to preserve and protect, and how to do it. “The funding will help as we continue to protect the site as we work toward getting it on the National Register of Historic Places,” Alcorn said. “We know the history of the project is historic. It has significance because of Tesla’s work there — it’s a scientific site. Its architectural origins, in inspiration of Stanford White, an important architect at his time, [are also significant].” Alcorn said that every dollar is significant, as the nonprofit looks toward the future of turning part of the site into a museum — and the funding makes the creation of a museum more exciting, if the organization can get the property on the national list. “We believe in preserving and making the best possible choice in how we use that space,” she said. “Having the grant enables us to develop ideas that bring together the past and the future. We have far more fundraising to do moving forward, so the contribution really helps us realize and achieve the steps necessary to move forward. The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation has been magnificent, and we applaud their foresight into giving to organizations such as ours, who want to preserve the best of the past.”

Governor says he’ll sue over dumping in local waters By Donna newman Donna@tbrnewspapers.com
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is threatening to sue. State lawmakers have joined forces across the aisle to issue a demand to both the federal government and the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the dumping of dredged sludge in the Long Island Sound at two existing sites. At Sunken Meadow State Park Aug. 4, New York office-holders from multiple levels of government presented a united front. Gov. Cuomo (D) warned U.S. President Barack Obama (D) and the EPA that a plan to create a third disposal site poses a “major” threat to the ecologically vital habitat and blocks progress to end openwater dumping in Long Island’s waters. He and Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) wrote letters to Obama, EPA Administrator Regina McCarthy and EPA Regional Administrator H. Curtis Spalding about their opposition. The dredging of Connecticut harbors and rivers, meant to deepen waterways to allow ships clear passage, produces sludge that is being open dumped in the Long Island Sound, according to Englebright’s office. new york State lawmakers band together to stop Long Island Sound dumping. for the dumping of dredge spoils,” George Hoffman of the Setauket Harbor Task Force, a North Shore group that works for clean water in Setauket and Port Jefferson harbors, said in a statement. Should the federal agency continue its plan to allow dumping of dredge spoils in eastern Long Island Sound, New York State will pursue legal action against the EPA, Cuomo said. In 2005, the EPA struck an accord with the governors of New York and Connecticut to reduce or limit the disposal of dredged material in the Sound by examining alternative placement practices. Two sites— Western Long Island Sound and Central Long Island Sound — were designated on Long Island to be used for that purpose. On April 27, the EPA proposed the designation of a dredged material disposal site in the Eastern region of Long Island Sound, a third dumping location that would con-

tinue open-water dumping of dredge waste in the Eastern Long Island Sound for as long as 30 years. The two sites open now are set to close Dec. 23. Englebright doesn’t see the latest proposal as a step in the right direction — according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, approximately 22.6 million cubic yards of dredging will be done over the next 30 years. “The draft appears to be the same open water dredge-dumping plan we have seen before,” he said. “Federal, state and local governments have spent billions of taxpayer dollars to clean up the Long Island Sound and significant progress has been made … continued dredge dumping will make the task of cleaning up the sound so much more difficult.” The EPA has maintained that dredging is a necessary part of keeping the sound passable for ships.
“Dredging is needed to ensure safe navigation in the sound,” EPA spokesman John Martin said in an email. “The EPA has not made a final decision, but we believe the proposal strikes an appropriate balance between the need for dredging to maintain safe and efficient navigation and our desired outcome to restore and protect Long Island Sound.” He referred to the Sound as a nationally significant estuary that has seen the return of dolphins and humpback whales during the past year, thanks to cleanup efforts. New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) agreed that the state has made significant investments to repair decades of damage. “Real progress is being made, which makes the EPA’s recent proposal to expand the number of dredged material sites in the sound even more difficult to comprehend,” he said. “I fully support using whatever resources the state has at its disposal to fight the EPA’s plan and protect the long-term health of the sound so that it will continue to be an environmental and economic asset for future generations of Long Islanders.” In his letter to the agency and the White House, Cuomo stressed his intentions to take action to protect Long Island’s waters if the EPA fails to comply with lawmakers’ requests. “If EPA ignores New York’s objections and finalizes its rule to permanently designate an open water disposal site in eastern Long Island Sound,” Cuomo said, “ I will take all necessary steps to challenge the rule and stop it from being implemented.” Victoria Espinoza, Desirée Keegan and Alex Petroski contributed reporting.

PeoPle Brookhaven Town’s board honors Sen. Ken LaValle The Brookhaven Town Board recognized New York State Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) at a meeting Aug. 11 for his efforts in getting approval for a plan initiated by the town, which was a land swap that resulted in the expansion of Sylvan Avenue Park in Miller Place. LaValle was at the meeting to present the board with a copy of the bill signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D). “In the world of government, we’re at the bottom — town government,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said during the meeting. “A lot of times we need help from people above us at the county, the state and the federal government. At the state, we have a great champion, someone that always speaks for us, someone that helps us, someone that guides us and makes our jobs easier. That

Two talented winners of Port Jeff golf tourney By Joseph Wolkin Entering Port Jefferson Country Club’s 2016 club championship spanning the first two weekends of August, South Setauket’s Gerry Mackedon had a winner’s mindset. Before he even stepped foot onto the course, he believed he could come away with the win. Golfing shortly after he started to walk as a toddler, Mackedon grew up a golf addict. His work ethic on the course has remained constant over the years, providing him with the skill set needed to become one of Long Island’s top prospects from an early age. The 18-year-old walked onto the green with a pep in his step, looking to win on the course his father, Bill Mackedon, has worked at as the head golf professional for nine years. “It was extremely hot and humid,” Mackedon said of the championship day, Sunday, Aug. 14. “I think the heat index was over 100 degrees. It was tough, but it was all worth it in the end. The conditions don’t really bother me. I just go out there and play. Everyone plays in the same conditions, so they don’t really bother me as much as others.” With father by his side, the younger Mackedon he was able to win the tournament, one of several he has been triumphant at throughout 2016. “My dad has always been there,” Mackedon said. “He hasn’t just been supporting me, but he’s been teaching me the important parts of life — and not just with golf. It’s good to have him next to me, having him teach me everything.” The Ward Melville High School graduate helped lead his school team to the Suffolk championship this past season. During the Long Island Cup against Manhasset at Bethpage Black, Mackedon shot 2-over-par 73, leading the Patriots to a 415-427 victory. Mackedon had been on the radar of college coaches throughout his high school
career. pretty big eye-opener, especially when you can shoot that low on a challenging golf course,” he said. “And it’s not only watching his demeanor on the golf course, you have all these ingredients.” For Mackedon, the goal is to compete on the PGA tour. Practicing day in and day out, he believes the goal is attainable. “I practice for hours every day, play every day,” Mackedon said. “I played in lots of tournaments over the summer. … Golf is a very large and important part of my life.” In August 2015, Mackedon played in the Met Open Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck. He finished tied fourth out of the 17 amateur competitors who made the cut at that tournament, his best result in a USGA-supported event. The Port Jefferson Country Club’s ladies championship was won by Donna Woodruff, of Port Jefferson. The deputy director of athletics at Stony Brook University, she scored a total of 245 to come home with the trophy. “It being the club championship, every year you look forward to it,” Woodruff said. “It’s an opportunity to compete, and if you’re fortunate enough to play well over the three rounds, it’s nice to have an opportunity to contend for the championship.” Woodruff considers herself an avid golfer. Though she didn’t grow up playing golf, her brothers and father began to play after she earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990, and then the game appealed to her. As she began to learn how to play, the skill level came naturally. Winning the tournament for the second straight year, Woodruff now has four championships at the Port Jefferson Country Club, something she never expected would happen when she started playing. “It is a great opportunity to represent the club as its champion,” Woodruff said. “I feel honored to have done that; the competition for all of us is a great thing. Several people have the opportunity to win the championship, and I was just glad that I came away this time as the winner.”

A closer look at the US Constitution

A professor and student at Stony Brook University School of Medicine look at a medical scan.
A powerful partnership Two major power players in the field of medical help and research have come together to form a new partnership. Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Health System, of New York City, have joined together to create more academic research opportunities to streamline and expand clinical care initiatives. While they are not the first school of medicine to connect with a health system on Long Island — Hofstra University’s School of Medicine works with Northwell Health — this certainly means new breakthroughs are on the horizon in Suffolk County. Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University said that each institution will be bringing its biggest strengths to the table, thus making each other stronger. Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine has strong biomedical, clinical research and health policy expertise, while Stony Brook University boasts programs with advanced mathematics, high-performance computing, and physical and chemical science departments. Combining math and science programs together will help students become well rounded, and open up the possibility for new programs. A press release said Stony Brook students will also be able to gain experience in areas of medicine that the university doesn’t currently offer, like observing and learning from heart transplants and other pilot programs. And students from either institution are now welcome to take classes at the other. But this liaison is going beyond students. Kaushansky said this partnership will improve patient care at both Stony Brook University Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital by allowing patients to easily seek services from either hospital. This is a great endeavor that should be encouraged and supported by the community. Not only does this teaming help students get a more in-depth education and give professors more opportunities for expanded lessons, it will in turn help the residents of the North Shore by improving the care that the local hospital can offer through the new discoveries and breakthroughs the new partnership will make.

We may never know whether Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump meant to incite violence against a duly elected U.S. president with his comment about the “Second Amendment people.” However, his statement during the same rally, where he warned the audience that if Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were to become president she would appoint liberal Supreme Court justices who would “gut” the Second Amendment and take “your guns away” again, shows that he has no idea how our government works. Hillary Clinton could appoint very liberal justices, and it would have no effect on the Second Amendment, or any amendment for that matter, for two reasons. First, any nominee to the Supreme Court must be approved by the Senate. I guess Mr. Trump must be assuming that the Democrats are going to win the Senate, and therefore approve any nominees Clinton nominates. That works for me. Second — and more importantly — he does not seem to know how the U.S. Constitution
File photo
is structured. I guess he still has not read it. Article V of the U. S. Constitution spells out how it can be amended: For an amendment to be proposed or repealed, it requires two-thirds of each of the federal legislative bodies — House and Senate — to vote in the affirmative. Once that has happened, it then requires two-thirds of the state legislatures of the 50 states to vote in the affirmative. Because any amendment can be blocked by a mere 13 states withholding approval, amendments do not come easily. In fact, only 27 amendments have been ratified since the Constitution became effective, and 10 of those occurred
almost immediately — as The Bill of Rights. The difficulty required to change an amendment ought to give us pause, for our Founding Fathers went out of their way to be sure the rights protected by the Constitution could not be easily stripped away. Whether our next president supports or does not support gun control, he or she must make sure that these rules are followed. But then, it does seem that Mr. Trump thinks and behaves as if he is running for emperor, not president. But some of us know better.

The ‘empress’ Clinton has no clothes Like Khizr Kahn, Patricia Smith, the mother of Benghazi victim Sean Smith, spoke at one of the major-party conventions. “I blame Hillary Clinton for the death of my son,” she said. “In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. But when I saw her at Sean’s coffin ceremony, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency?” I would encourage you to Google the essay of legendary columnist William Safire in the Jan. 8, 1996 edition of The New York Times in which he describes Clinton as a congenital liar. “She is in the longtime habit of lying; and she has never been called to account for lying herself or in suborning lying in her aides and friends.” Twenty years later, a tired, old leopard has not changed its spots. In November 2015, Clinton said “every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.” When asked if this included the many women accusing her husband of sexual assault, she smiled and said, “Everybody should be believed until they are disbe-

Patricia Smith speaks at the 2016 Republican National Convention. lieved based on evidence.” Upon hearing these remarks, Juanita Broaddrick shared her pain. “I was 35 years old when Bill Clinton, Arkansas attorney general, raped me and Hillary tried to silence me. I am now 73 and it never goes away.” Before voting in November, Google feminist Camille Paglia’s March 2015 interview on YouTube, where she described\s Clinton as “a complete fraud,” and “a woman that has enabled the debredations and exploitation of women.” She observed Clinton hitch her wagon to her husband after she failed the bar exam in Washington D.C., and said, “she’s had no real career other than riding on the coattails of her horn-dog husband.”
Clinton’s many lies regarding her personal email server are well documented. Anyone needing a refresher watch or read FBI Director James Comey’s responses to Congressman Trey Gowdy’s questions at the recent hearing. Comey confirmed Mrs. Clinton sent and received classified emails, used more than one device, did not turn over all work-related emails and her lawyers did not read the 30,000 messages they deleted on her behalf. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell felt the need to prevent her campaign from pinning her use of a private email server on him. He said: “The truth is, she was using her private server for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did as Secretary of State.” Although I respect that many people of good will support Clinton, Safire’s essay rings very true today. The empress has no clothes and this is not pleasant to look at. Perhaps that explains why Clinton has not held a press conference since Dec. 5, 2015.

It’s summertime and the boating is easy

OPINION Out of control and loving it

s we count down the days of summer on our hands and feet and we prepare for yet another tour around the academic merrygo-round, some of us are squeezing in leisure activities that become increasingly harder to do amidst trigonometry tests, English exams, soccer practices and musical rehearsals. Some summer revelers go to amusement parks, where their bodies travel in direcBy Daniel Dunaief tions that defy the typical linear motion from our beds to our cars to our offices. What is it about those moments when we fly around the corner of a roller coaster, or when we tilt back and forth in a machine that moves

incredibly quickly that people fi nd so thrilling? Is it the feeling of our stomachs moving inside our bodies, the moment when we experience something completely new and more akin to that which another animal, like a bird, might feel — or is it something more basic? The answers depend on who you are and what you consider fun. I think, however, at the base of these wild rides is something we share in different degrees and circumstances. We enjoy the moment between when we exercise what we feel is the usual level of control over our lives, and that instant which balances between thrill and terror when we give up control. Yes, I know there are people who crave control to such a degree that almost all the decisions they make seem rooted in the power to influence each element or variable in their lives. To return to a scene from childhood, they are holding a crayon in their hand and carefully staying within the lines of life’s coloring book.

Maybe I wasn’t enough of an artist, or maybe I just enjoyed the entropy that comes from my universe which always seems to be moving toward a greater state of disorder, but those undirected marks outside the lines always seemed so liberating. The lines were the equivalent of someone instructing me to, “Do this, stay here, do that.” My squiggly and nonrepresentational lines were enshrined in my response: “No, thanks.” Recently, my son, brother and I went sailing in a strong wind. My brother, who captained the small boat, delighted at the sudden surge of speed as we flew across Port Jefferson Harbor. We were flying through the water at speeds that rivaled nearby motorboats, leaving behind a bubbly, foamy water trail. After several trips back and forth, the wind picked up enough strength that it submerged half of the boat. We heeled so far that my brother and son were heading toward the water. Still planted on the higher side of the boat, I reached
for my son’s life jacket and held on, trying to use our combined weight to keep us from capsizing. Seconds before we reached that tipping point, however, my brother let the sails out, dumping the wind and righting the ship just in time. While the outing was enjoyable up to that point, it reached a whole new level of excitement, especially for my son, who couldn’t wait to tell his cousins about how we started to tip. Naturally, their reaction was to put on their bathing suits, grab their life jackets and head for the boat. So, what is it about those outof-control moments that are so enjoyable, particularly in the retelling? Maybe, it’s just that — for the precise instant when gravity seems optional, when our routine experiences aren’t enough to allow us to predict the future with certainty the way we can with so many other things — anything is possible. And our minds, like our bodies, jump into the excitement of the unknown.
