Brookhaven town supervisor ed romaine wants to maintain the town’s AAA credit rating, and the 2017 tentative operating budget reflects that. One area that saw an increase in funds for 2017 was snow removal, which now stands at just under $6 million. “If we do have a year of little snow, we hope to be able to move some of that budget over to highway maintenance [budget] lines to increase the spending there if we don’t need the snow budget,” Wright said.

The town was able save money by eliminating 13 full-time positions, which were left vacant primarily by retirements and resignations during the course of the year, according to Wright. The town board will hold a public hearing and vote to approve the tentative 2017 budget Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

Governor approves standards for lead levels in schools By ReBecca anzel Drinking water in public schools across the state will soon conclude testing for lead contamination. Legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in September makes New York the first state to mandate such testing. The law established a level of lead allowed in drinking water, initial and future testing requirements for schools and deadlines for notifying parents and staff of results. “These rigorous new protections for New York’s children include the toughest lead contamination testing standards in the nation and provide clear guidance to schools on when and how they should test their water,” Cuomo said in a press release. Schools are more likely to have raised lead levels because intermittent use of water causes extended water contact with plumbing fixtures. Those installed before 1986, when federal laws were passed to restrict the amount of lead allowed in materials, might have a higher amount of lead. “We know how harmful lead can be to the health and well-being of young children, and that’s why the Senate insisted on testing school water for lead,” state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said in a statement. “As a result, New York becomes the first state in the nation to perform this testing and protect millions of its students from potential health risks.” Lead consumption by children is especially harmful because behavioral and physical effects, such as brain damage

new standards will require school districts in new york state to test for lead in water. and reduced IQ, happen at lower levels of exposure, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Even low levels of lead exposure can cause hearing loss, nervous system damage and learning disabilities. In adults, lead can cause damage to the reproductive system, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The new law required schools teaching children in prekindergarten through fifth grade to test drinking water by Sept. 30 and schools with children from grades six through 12 to complete testing by the end of October. This affects in excess of 700 school districts and 37 BOCES locations in the state,

consisting of more than 5,000 school buildings, according to the state. Private schools are exempt from this testing. Any lead level exceeding 15 micrograms per liter must be reported by the school to the local health department within one business day. Schools are also mandated to share the test results with parents and staff in writing and to publish a list of lead-free buildings on their websites. Glenn Neuschwender, president of Enviroscience Consultants, a Ronkonkomabased environmental consulting firm, said to a certain extent, these deadlines are a challenge, especially those pertaining to the test results.

“I’ve been speaking to the county health department — they’re currently not prepared to receive that data,” Neuschwender said in a phone interview. “The same would go for the state Department of Health. They’re not currently prepared to start receiving data yet, but they’ve told me that they will be within the coming weeks.” The cost of a lead analysis ranges from $20 to $75 per sample and must be conducted by a laboratory approved by the Environmental Laboratory Approval Program. Long Island Analytical Laboratories in Holbrook and Pace Analytical Services in Melville are two approved labs, according to the state Department of Health. If the level of lead in a sample exceeds what the law allows, the school is required to prohibit the use of that faucet until further testing shows the issue is rectified. The law also requires schools to conduct testing every five years. “The law is certainly, I would say, a work in progress,” Neuschwender said. “The law is very short in discussing remediation — it’s more specific to sampling and actionlevel objectives — so we expect to see some clarification on the remediation side of things as the law is revised.” Port Jefferson school district conducted voluntary testing of fixtures throughout the district this summer before Cuomo signed the law, and found small amounts of lead in nine locations. All nine fixtures have been replaced, according to Fred Koelbel, district plant facilities administrator.

The New York State Education Department wants teachers and parents to weigh in on changes to Common Core State Standards and some voices are already criticizing the proposals. The department released a draft of new learning standards for public comment at the end of last month, which included recommendations to change 60 percent of the English language arts standards and 55 percent of the math standards for New York State. The recommendations came from two committees comprised of more than 130 parents and teachers and included creating a new early learning task force and a glossary of math verbs and English terms. The NYS Allies for Public Education applauded the committee’s efforts but said due to the confining nature of the state education department the results are not substantive content changes. “The result of their efforts is essentially just a rebranding of the Common Core,” the group said in a statement. Comsewogue school district Superintendent Joe Rella echoed those sentiments. “The overriding opinion is that it’s more of the same,” he said in a phone interview. “They didn’t really make any substantive changes. These are more revised phrasing and language. They’re attached at the hip to the original standards.” He also said the department should have looked at the use of standards themselves. “It was not meant to do anything but review the current standards,” Rella said. “They never got into the bigger picture, which is the appropriateness of the standards.” The superintendent said he is not anticipating anything different this school year because of the proposed modifications. Jim Polansky, superintendent at Huntington school district, also questioned how effective these changes would be to districts. “The truth is that the large majority of those changes are immaterial,” he said in an email. “There is still a chance that additional modifications to the new draft standards will be made following the comment period; however, I don’t anticipate that any further changes will be particularly significant either. I do not necessarily believe that the new set will be drastically

different from the current Common Core.” NYS Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said committee members spent a year listening to public comment before drafting new standards. “Dedicated teachers, parents and educators from across the state put in countless hours to develop these new draft standards,” Elia said in a statement. “Teachers will be able to use these standards as a basis for developing their curricula and lesson plans to meet the needs of students in their classrooms. These changes reflect what I have heard from parents, teachers and administrators over the past year in my travels across the state.” Kings Park Superintendent Timothy Eagen said giving parents and educators a chance to provide feedback was “a huge step forward,” and that the chance to improve how the state looks at standards is important. “The key with any set of standards is that teachers need to be given the freedom to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of every child in their classroom,” he said in an email. “Standards and curriculum modules cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach.” For the ELA changes, five subcommittee groups based on grade levels reviewed the original standards to see if they met the criteria for what a student should know and be able to perform at their grade level, and recommended new areas to improve standards. Specific changes include more focus on students in prekindergarten to second grade, with an early learning task force that discusses issues for younger learners, teaching from a wider variety of texts, and developing clear communication with parents so they understand the curriculum and assignments their children are given. Math changes include creating a glossary of verbs associated with mathematics, maintaining the rigor of standards so students are aware of what is expected of them at every grade level and providing more time for students to understand mathematics content. To review the new English standards in more detail visit http://www.nysed.gov/ draft-standards-english-language-arts, and for math standards see http://www.nysed. gov/draft-standards-mathematics. The public can also comment on the changes by completing a grade-level specific survey. The public comment period ends Nov. 4.

Rainy run to the Port Jeff Brewery raises money for park By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Rainy and windy conditions made for a sloppy Sunday morning, but that didn’t stop about a thousand runners who laced up their shoes and hit the streets of Port Jefferson for a good cause. The 15K Run to the Port Jeff Brewing Company took place Oct. 9 to raise money for the Port Jefferson Treasure Your Parks campaign, an initiative created to help refurbish the more-than 50-year-old Clifton H. Lee Memorial Park, which is commonly known as Rocketship Park. The Greater Long Island Running Club, a group that hosts races across Long Island year-round, sanctioned the race. The fundraising idea came from Mike Philbrick, owner of the brewing company, who wanted to contribute to a Port Jeff specific cause. “I felt the need for fundraising to resonate with the local brewery, and that made complete sense,” Philbrick said in a phone interview after the event. The race raised several thousand dollars for the event, according to Philbrick, though a final tally wasn’t known at the time of publication. The Port Jefferson resident said his four kids have all played at the park. Most of the runners were from Suffolk and Nassau counties, and Philbrick said Port Jeff’s reputation as a destination community makes it likely many of the runners either used the park as kids, have brought their kids to the park or perhaps know someone who has used the park. The roughly 9-mile race began on West Broadway near Schafer’s restaurant, and concluded on Mill Creek Road near the Port Jeff Brewing Company, where participants celebrated the run with a cold beer. Runner Chris Steenkamer, 22, from Maryland crossed the finish line first in front of 33-year-old Chris Koegel of Malverne. Tom Holowka, 31, of Setauket came in third and

Heather Williams, 41, of Centerport, at seventh was the first woman to cross the finish line. Philbrick admitted he set out to achieve one other goal, besides raising money for the park. “I’d be lying to you if I told you we weren’t trying to be the toughest course on Long Island,” Philbrick said with a laugh. He added

that he’d like to host the race again in the future, and plans to select a different and worthy local cause each year. Port Jefferson’s hilly terrain combined with the slick conditions made for a challenging day for runners. An event to kick off the refurbishing process, called the Rocketship Park Launch Off, will be held today Thursday, Oct. 13, at 4:30 p.m. at the park located behind Port Jefferson Village Hall about a half-block away from Port Jeff Brewing Company. The

renovation plan will include new equipment and concrete walkways, seating in shaded areas, a planting garden, artificial grass turf and improvements to become more handicapped accessible, according to the project’s website. So far about $270,000 has been raised. The Treasure Your Parks campaign set a goal of $550,000 to cover the total cost of the project. History

Old LIRR luggage tags from Miller Place are a rare find By Edna GiffEn

©151563

Pieces of history are everywhere. In June 2016, Marty Randall donated a set of luggage tags to the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society. Randall, who received the tags from his great-uncle Melville Warner, of Miller Place, was born and raised in Mount Sinai but currently lives in Tennessee. The luggage tags in the photo on the right are made of brass and were intended for use on the Long Island Rail Road by the American Railway Company of New York. The larger of the tags reads “34th Street to Millers Place via L.I.R.R. 58104.” On the reverse side, it reads “Miller’s Place to 34th Street via L.I.R.R. 58104.” The smaller tag, reads “34th Street and Millers Place via L.I.R.R. 58104” on one side, and “In consideration of free carriage of baggage its value is agreed to be limited to one hundred dollars,” on the other. In 1894, the LIRR extended the Port Jefferson branch to Wading River, with expectations to continue further east to rejoin the main line. Miller’s Place had the first station east of Port Jefferson. The station was built on the north side of the tracks, east of Sylvan Avenue and

south of Echo Avenue. A fire in 1903 destroyed the station, and a new one was built in 1904. In 1934, this second structure was destroyed by fire. Although Miller’s Place had its share of visitors during the 1700s and 1800s, the railroad opened the area up to many more tourists looking for a place away from the heat and smells of New York City. Many Miller’s Place and Mount Sinai homeowners took in boarders to supplement the household income. One place, the Holiday House, became a destination for many girls working in the factories of New York City to come and spend two weeks in the country. Luggage was placed in the baggage car — so individual identification of bags was crucial. Rows of two tags would be hanging on a board behind the station agent, and each pair of tags had a matching number. When a customer arrived at 34th Street station, the larger tag was attached to the bag, and the smaller one given to the customer. Upon arrival at Miller’s Place, the customer could retrieve the luggage by showing the smaller tag. The tags were not always surrendered, but the customer kept them both and used them when returning

to New York. In 1894 the apostrophe “s” was dropped from Miller’s Place by the Postal Service; however, the LIRR kept the apostrophe “s” on its newly made brass luggage tags. The Wading River section of the railroad was busiest from the 1890s to 1910s. Ridership fell off as more people came to their summer places by automobile. The Holiday House girls still used the railroad, but even they had to find alternate transportation to Miller Place in 1917. In that year, the railroad announced there would be no summer timetable. It was the first time in years that there was no service. Residents and business people were concerned about the effect of this action. In June 1924, the station was opened and an agent assigned. In 1932, the Public Service Commission was to have hearings on the request of the railroad to discontinue service to Wading River. The local residents and business people were concerned that the discontinuing of rail service would have a negative impact on the development of the local area. Service had been poor for several years, and in 1928, steam trains had been replaced by gasolinepowered engines that propelled a car and carried passengers in half the car and freight in the other. It was not an

After several delays and hearings, the LIRR abandoned the Wading River section of the Port Jefferson branch in 1939. Bob Myers, of the Railroad Museum in Riverhead, was shown the pair of tags. He has not seen luggage tags for any of the stations on the Wading River section of the railroad, and a pair of tags with matching numbers is even rarer. Not much is left of the Wading River branch. Postcards show the sta-

tion, and photographs of the tracks and station exist. The right-of-way for the tracks now contains the towers of the Long Island Power Authority. The pair of tags, which is a rare piece of long forgotten history of Miller Place, will be on display at the Comsewogue Library for the month of October. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Student Organization members sponsored International Day of Peace activities in Port Jefferson School District Sept. 28.

Celebrating peace Port Jefferson School District celebrated the International Day of Peace Sept. 28 through activities sponsored by the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Student Organization. As part of the observance, Student Organization members produced a peace video featuring elementary, middle and high school students speaking about what peace means to them. All students viewed the video during their homeroom periods. The Student Organization decorat-

ed school hallways, lockers and classrooms with messages of peace written on sticky notes. The day’s activities included songs of peace performed by the high school chamber choir, and peace songs played over the schools’ public address system instead of bells. To further the message of peace, all teachers led discussions on the United Nations’ peace goals, and art students participated in the Shanti Fund’s annual peace calendar art contest.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Chris Mannarino experienced a college-level music program through SUNY Fredonia’s Summer School for the Arts Program. To gain entrance into the prestigious program, Mannarino participated in a challenging vocal audition process. During the four-week program, he studied music theory and learned intensive vocal techniques while singing in the program’s choir. “This program was a great experience,” said Mannarino. “I learned a lot and made many new connections.” Mannarino, who has been singing since the age of 7, plays the drums, keyboard, guitar and bass. In addition, he participates in theater productions at the Smithtown Performing Arts Center.

Port Jeff pulls through with homecoming win By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Hail the homecoming kings. The Port Jefferson football team outscored Center Moriches 36-20 Oct. 8 to put a wet and wild homecoming victory into the record books. Port Jefferson wide receiver Brian Mark started the scoring in the opening quarter when he caught a 46yard pass from quarterback Jack Collins for the early lead. The Royals failed to make the 2-point conversion, and Center Moriches tied the score on a three-yard run after the extra-point kick attempt failed. Port Jefferson running back Joey Evangelista rushed home a two-yard touchdown to extend the lead shortly after. The Royals again failed to make the two-point conversion, leaving the score 12-6 entering the second quarter. Center Moriches scored first in the second stanza, with a touchdown on a 43yard pass, but the two-point conversion failed. Again, the two teams were tied, this time 12-12. Wide receiver Thomas Mark, Brian’s brother, caught a 57-yard throw from Collins, and Evangelista’s run for a good two-point conversion put Port Jefferson out front 20-12. Collins continued his strong showing when he rushed seven yards into the end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter. He completed another two-point conversion pass to bring the score to 28-12. While the Royals held Center Moriches scoreless

in the third quarter, Thomas Mark got back to work, and caught a 10-yard pass for his second touchdown of the day. Evangelista rushed into the end zone to complete his third two-point conversion in the homecoming game. Center Moriches caught a 57-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, but

the Red Devils couldn’t mount a comeback. Thomas Mark had 67 receiving yards and 24 rushing yards. Evangelista rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Collins was 3-for-7, passing for 113 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 40 yards on seven attempts with a touchdown. Brian Mark made two interceptions.

OpiniOn Editorial

Letters to the editor

Honoring WWI veteran from Port Jeff

Donald Trump has received a lot of backlash for private comments he made in 2005 regarding his boastful treatment of women.

The right to be offended As an editorial staff, we have an opinion. … The first half of that sentence isn’t necessary in order to reveal what we think. And that is the exact problem we have had with this past weekend’s news cycle. Political leader after political leader came out this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday to condemn Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s leaked comments, bragging about being able to commit sexual assault against women. One of the common themes from legislators who pulled their endorsements was “As a father of daughters” or “As a brother with sisters — or a mother,” they were offended. Two problems here: You don’t need to be a “someone” in order to be offended, you can simply be offended. And why is it that women are repeatedly being referred to as a sister, a daughter or a mother? A presidential candidate talked about how he can sexually assault women because he is a star. A woman doesn’t need to be anything to be offended, threatened or violated by that sentiment. A man is also not disqualified from finding Trump’s comments reprehensible simply because he is a man. Women don’t need to give birth or have a brother before they can be victimized by Trump’s words. Men don’t need to be married to condemn sexual assault. It should not matter your role, your background or your stature — no one should need to back up or justify why they are against sexual assault. They just should be.

During the Port Jefferson high school homecoming weekend, there were many joyous events. In particular, I attended the Wall of Fame induction ceremony which took place on Saturday, October 8th, at approximately 3 p.m. during the halftime of the high school football game. Corporal Irving Wilson Ritch Jr. joined all the previous inductees. Who was Wilson Ritch? Wilson Ritch was born Jan. 6, 1888. His parents were Martha and Irving Wilson Ritch Sr. He had a brother, Alvin and sister, Marion. They grew up in Port Jefferson, and Wilson graduated from the high school with honors in 1904. Ritch was employed by the National City Bank when he met and married his wife, Janet. They lived in Kingston, New York. At the outbreak of World War I, Wilson volunteered twice for service in the Army and Navy, but was rejected due to his weight of only 106 pounds. At the age of 30, having gained weight, he was finally accepted by the Army. He received six weeks basic training at Camp Upton on Long Island and sailed for France in February 1918. Upon arrival, he was

for its abundance of New York soldiers and involvement in some of the fiercest battles of World War I. On Sept. 6, 1918, Cpl. Wilson Ritch was killed in action in the Argonne Forest. He is buried at Plot C Row 1 Grave 22 in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in Seringes-et-Nesles, France, along with 5,475 comrades. On Sept. 1, 1919, the Wilson Ritch American Legion Post #432 was chartered. Commander A.C. Fiske presided at the first meeting, where the constitution and bylaws were read to the first fifteen charter members in the Port Jefferson Firehouse. Today on Hallock Avenue, that post 432 continues to honor the name of Cpl. Wilson Ritch. Through subsequent years, Ritch has been honored by the Village of Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson Library and the First Baptist Church in Port Jefferson. Nearly 100 years after his supreme sacrifice for our country, Cpl. Wilson Ritch joined the Earl Vandermeulen High School Wall of Fame in Port Jefferson. Our native son is finally home in his alma mater.

Philip Griffith Port Jefferson

Original owner of PJ bar sets record straight My name is Billie E. Phillips. Thirty-five years ago, my late first wife and I borrowed every dollar we could and spent every dime we had to open up the Bar/Restaurant, Billie’s 1890 Saloon. Like every venture into the hospitality business, it was a gamble. We were very fortunate. Through the first years it became apparent that Billie’s was becoming a special place for the community, a place for stories to be told, laughs to be had, and new memories to be made. Since then, and after my sale of Billie’s, it has maintained its standing as part of the fabric of the community. Unfortunately, as most of you know, Billie’s sustained a kitchen fire and has been closed since late June. Since then, the current tenant’s lease was cancelled for reasons

many people have speculated about, but most people have no true knowledge of. Rumors have spread to the point that petitions were started to save the building from being torn down. The building will not be torn down and the bar and restaurant you have grown to love will continue on in the tradition of Billie’s 1890 Saloon for as long as I have a say in the matter. After a brief tour of the building by the landlord, I was asked if I would be interested in leasing the property, as a new lease would not be offered to individuals of the previous corporate tenant for reasons that were explained to me. After some contemplation, I felt the reasons were understandable. At the end of the day, I could not stand by and watch Billie’s

1890 Saloon be taken over by anyone without ties to the Port Jefferson community. In a decision that was very difficult to me because of friendships I have with people connected to Billie’s in many capacities, my family and I have assumed control of the space used by Billie’s 1890 Saloon. It is my hope people will begin to understand this could have been the end of Billie’s as they knew it, and to some it will probably still feel this way. However, to those that are skeptical, please know my family and I will endeavor always to maintain the intangibles that make Billie’s such a special place in the hearts of so many.

opinion Turning to past presidents for words of wisdom

W

here can we turn when the dialogue from, or about, our presidents seems to fall short? Fortunately, we can look to the imperfect presidents of the past, whose ideas and inspiration have, for years, proved much more than “just words,” and whose notions about who — and what — we can or should be has helped provide a compass for the country. James Garfield might be a good place to start: “We can not overestimate the fervent love of By Daniel Dunaief liberty, the intelligent courage and the sum of common sense with which our fathers made the great experiment of selfgovernment.” Garfield also proferred, “If wrinkles

D. None of the above

must be written on our brow, let them not be written on our heart. The spirit should never grow old.” Thomas Jefferson suggested a way to deal with growing personal frustration: “When angry, count 10, before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.” How about a few words from Rutherford B. Hayes who said, “He serves his party best who serves the country best.” Martin Van Buren advised, “It’s easier to do a job right, than to explain why you didn’t.” How about a quote from Honest Abe? “My dream,” Lincoln said, “is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last, best hope on Earth.” Or this one: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Here’s another Lincoln quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

Turning to the other side of the Civil War conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, said, “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” John Quincy Adams’ inspirational suggestion was, “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.” Chester A. Arthur said, “Men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken.” Harry S. Truman indicated, “No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.” Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking … is freedom.” Describing a country whose ancestors came from so many other nations, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us,

and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” FDR’s cousin Theodore Roosevelt said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Teddy also suggested, “Courtesy is as much a mark of a gentleman as courage.” John F. Kennedy, who saw his fair share of crises during a presidency cut short, said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity.” John Tyler offered these amusing and humbling words: “Here lies the body of my good horse, The General. For 20 years he bore me around the circuit of my practice, and in all that time he never made a blunder. Would that his master could say the same.” William Howard Taft pointedly said, “Politics, when I am in it, makes me sick.” An Eisenhower quote might be a fitting way to end: “America is best described by one word, freedom.”

Britain’s Baroness Jay brings warning of threat to democracy

A

baroness and former leader of the British House of Lords, Margaret Jay, came to Stony Brook University to speak to us about “The new populism in America and Britain: What has happened to our politics?” The talk, which was open to the public and well attended, drew parallels between Trumpism and the Brexit movement in Britain and served as one way to understand our preBy Leah S. Dunaief election frenzy. Populism, as a political ideology, views virtuous citizens as mistreated by small circles of elites to be overthrown. In Britain, where jobs are drying up and wages have been stagnant for those 31-59 years of age for decades, migrants have been pouring into the country — some 330,000 in the last year, looking for jobs and a good life.

Between you and me

Citizens are angry. The landscape has changed and a common cry is, “I don’t recognize the town I grew up in,” as a result of the changes. As a member of the European Union, Britain had open borders for laborers throughout the 28-member countries even as British workers could in turn move anywhere within the EU from Britain. Baroness Jay of Paddington, daughter of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, told us that there are four times as many Brits collecting unemployment insurance in Germany as there are Germans collecting unemployment in Britain. Nonetheless, the “elites” and the politicians are seen by the British middle class as being unresponsive and only self-serving, and there is a deep sense of insecurity in the country. In such an environment, the message, “Support Brexit to take back control,” resonates and sounds not dissimilar to “Make America great again.” These slogans would seem to pit the common people against the top 1 percent. Leaders of populist movements have certain characteristics in common, as the baroness pointed out. They tend to be blunt to the point

of crude. The media loves them for their irresistible sound bites and the attention they draw from the public, and offers them a platform. Interestingly in this comparison of Britain and the United States, those who would speak “for the people” are not actually “of the people.” They feel none of the economic insecurities but seek to identify with the millions of citizens. That is certainly the case with “billionaire” Trump and also the leaders of the Brexit campaign, who are from the upper classes. Populism is spreading in Europe. Will it spread here? That is the question Margaret Jay poses for us. For the United Kingdom, there are other serious issues. Will the four parts of the country stay together? Scotland and Northern Ireland resoundingly voted to stay in the EU, while Wales and England voted to leave. Also there is what the baroness described as an “unpleasant divide” between foreign workers, who are increasingly viewed as taking away jobs, benefits and even lifestyle, and the citizens. The Brexit vote seems to have given legitimacy to the antagonisms. Then there are the matters of

making separate trade agreements with 27 other countries, and the pound sterling exchange rate. Meanwhile what has Brexit done to the rest of the EU? Other countries, with similar movements, are stirring. There is even the thought that the Brexit vote may have caused matters to improve elsewhere, as politicians heed the message sent by the voters. The solution, proposed by Baroness Jay, lies in rebuilding the center. We must not become fortresses of isolation, she warns, either in trade or of xenophobia. Pluralism and diversity are the way of the future, and in the U.S. these ideas are baked into our democracy. To rebuild the center involves a role for education. Tellingly some 75 percent of the more educated in Britain voted to stay in the EU, while about the same number, 75 percent of the less educated, voted to leave. The latter are those for whom the present system is not working. And while this picture of current politics, is specific to Britain at the moment, the dark and unpleasant nature of this past Sunday’s presidential debate here would urge us to pay further attention to the people whose needs are not being met.
