town Meet the valedictorians and salutatorians of the Huntington area By Victoria espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Students at Huntington, Northport-East Northport and Harborfields school districts put in strong efforts this year to come out at the top of their classes. The valedictorian and salutatorian of each district answered a few questions to let their community get to know them a little better. The graduates were asked the following: (1) What were you involved with at your high school? (2) What college are you attending and what are you studying? (3) What is your favorite high school memory? (4) What are you most excited for in college? (5) What will you miss most about your school?
Huntington
Salutatorian: Miranda Nykolyn, 17 1. I was involved with Key Club (secretary), varsity rowing, varsity tennis, Mathletes, and Science National Honor Society (treasurer). Science research is among my favorite activities. 2. I am attending Stanford University and majoring in mechanical engineer ing/applied mathematics. 3. My favorite high school memory would have to be winning the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships in the Women’s Varsity Single. 4. I am most excited to be living on my own, and being responsible for my own actions. College is a great time to grow and find a healthy balance between schoolwork and fun. 5. I will miss most the amazing people in my community and the great programs offered. Huntington High School has many AP classes and a variety of extracurriculars that allow for any interest to be fostered.
Valedictorian: Steve Yeh, 18 1. I was involved with Stocks Analysis Club, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, Chinese Foreign Exchange Club, Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl, piano, tutoring at Huntington Station library and Natural Helpers. 2. I am attending Cornell University next year majoring in math and economics and minoring in physics. 3. I don’t necessarily have one favorite high school memory, but as a whole I loved being around my friends, having meaningful discussions and debates in history and government courses and helping out my classmates with academics and regular daily problems and vice versa; this makes it more of a community rather than just a school. 4. I am most excited about meeting new people who come from diverse backgrounds and also being able to study a variety of courses across a breadth of disciplines while also learning more in-depth about respective content material. 5. I will miss my friends and teachers the most. I have learned so much about various subjects, but more importantly, I have learned more about myself.
Northport-East Northport
Salutatorian: Sarah Abodalo, 17 1. I was involved with varsity soccer (captain), named All Conference and All County (2015, 2016) and Newsday Top 50 Players (2015, 2016). I also was All County SCMEA (2014, 2015), NYSCAME for Voice (2016),
NYSCAME for horn (2015), marching band, symphonic winds, tour choir (officer), pit orchestra, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. 2. I am attending the Honor’s College at Hofstra University, with majors in English and French language and education. 3. My favorite high school memory was when I toured England and Scotland with our tour choir in the summer 2015. Performing in some of the most historical places in the world was one of the most gratifying experiences I have had the opportunity to partake in. 4. Next year I will be playing on the Hofstra University women’s soccer team. I am beyond ecstatic and honored to be playing at such a high level with such talented individuals. 5. I will greatly miss being a part of the fantastic music program that Northport provides its students. Choir and band have been a major part of my life and I am sad to have to say goodbye to all the wonderful teachers I have had over the years. Valedictorian: Cybele Laisney, 18 1. I volunteered at the Atria, provided free tutoring for those in need, and at the Huntington YMCA. I was in French Club (president), Grandfriends (vice-president), National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and Technology Honor Society. I also played varsity tennis. 2. I am attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a major in bioengineering. 3. I will remember meeting with Martha, a resident at the Atria, to sit down and chat every Tuesday. She offered a lot of wisdom and always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I’ll miss her a lot next year, 4. I’m most excited to be surrounded by new people in the Cambridge/Boston area.
I know the people I will be surrounded by will only inspire me to push myself further. 5. I’ll miss the people I’ve met along the way. I’ve gotten to know some truly wonderful people throughout high school, and although it is heartbreaking to be apart from the people I’m close to, I know they will do bigger and better things in college.

Blood Center declares blood emergency in New York By Victoria espinoza Victoria@tBrnewspapers.com There is officially a blood emergency in the New York metropolitan region. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) announced this week the New York Blood Center declared the significantly low levels emergent and urged residents to donate. “There are hundreds, if not thousands of people waiting for a life-saving blood transfusion that could be the difference between life and death,” Bellone said in a statement. “I encourage all New Yorkers to give the gift of life by visiting a local blood donation
center and help someone in need.” The county executive highlighted multiple summer blood drives, with six to be held across Suffolk County so that residents can attend a convenient location in or near their community. Andrea Cefarelli, executive director of NYBC said it’s imperative that residents tell friends and family about local blood drives to help get more donors at the door. “By spreading the word or even hosting your own blood drive, inviting
friends, family, and community organizations, you may save lives in your community,” she said in a statement. “We are in dire need of O negative blood with a reserve that is currently below a two day supply, and that is just too low.” Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) urged his constituents to donate. “Having blood on our hospital shelves in advance is key to saving lives as it takes 48 hours for donated blood to reach those who need it,” he
said. “In response to the critical shortage we’re experiencing, I am hosting a blood drive with Long Island Blood Services Thursday, July 20 from 1 to 7 p.m., at the Centerport Fire Department. Please join our efforts to replenish the supply by donating at an upcoming drive or at a local donation center.” Other blood drives in the Huntington area include the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington Saturday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Cactus Salon in Dix Hills Friday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check for an upcoming blood drive near you at www.redcrossblood.org/ give/drive.

With July 4 approaching, town preaches boat safety By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewpapers.com The Town of Huntington released a video this week reminding residents to keep safety in mind while enjoying summer boating. The video highlights the danger of boat wakes and urges boaters to practice safe boating summer-long — especially during the weekend leading up to Independence Day. The four-minute video is narrated by Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) and was jointly produced with the Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs. “It’s your responsibility to be a safe boater,” Edwards said in the video. “For many of us, being on a boat is the highlight of the summer. Let’s do all we can to make sure that boating is enjoyable for all of us.” The video features a demonstration of the effects of a boat’s wake at different speeds on kayakers, shore erosion, wildlife and other boats and reminds boaters to heed markings, speed limits and be aware of other boaters on the water. In the first few moments of the video, Edwards is on a dock talking about the power the wake off a boat can create, and then the wake of a passing boat soaks her. “Wow, look at the wake of that boat, and look what it did to me,” Edwards said, shaking off the water from her clothes. “If

a map of the temporary speed zone restrictions in Huntington during the holiday. you’re on that boat, creating that wake may be a lot of fun for you, but not for the people that are out of the water.” For increased boat safety, the town is establishing a 5 mph speed limit from 8:30 to 11 p.m. in all of Northport Bay and Huntington Bay south from the line extending from Target Rock to Buoy One in Coast
Guard Cove, as well as Long Island Sound from the easternmost section of the Northport Power Plant to the westernmost end of the causeway on Asharoken Avenue. This restriction began in response to the 2012 tragedy, when three children died off Oyster Bay Cove when the boat in which they were watching a fireworks show capsized
as it was returning to Huntington. “As July 4 approaches, we again ask all residents to follow the rules and celebrate the holiday in a way that is safe to themselves, their families and guests and respects the rights of others,” Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) said in a statement. This year there are two scheduled fireworks events including one sponsored by Asharoken Village and the other presented by the Dolan family off Cove Neck. In addition to speed restrictions, some town facilities — Crab Meadow Beach, West Neck/Quentin Sammis Beach, Hobart Beach and the Soundview Boat Ramp — will remain open past sunset, after 5 p.m., but entry will be limited to town residents on a space available basis. Once the parking lot at a particular beach is full, no additional entry will be allowed and police may restrict access on roads leading to the facilities. The town has been working with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Suffolk County Police Department Marine Bureau and multiple incorporated villages on measures aimed at allowing people to safely get to and get home from fireworks shows. These measures include coordinating patrols and establishing a security zone around the firework barge shooting in the Asharoken area. Brookhaven Town web servers hacked by pro-ISIS group By alEx pEtroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com A pro-ISIS group successfully hacked the Brookhaven Town web servers for at least three hours Sunday, June 25. Brookhaven was one of 76 municipalities affected by the hack, page a34 according to Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville). The anti-American group created a page with hateful propaganda against the USA and the president of the United States. Panico and Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) addressed the incident during a press conference at Town Hall June 26. The group, called Team System DZ created a link using the Brookhaven Town servers to a static, look-alike webpage at the address http:// www.brookhavenny.gov/index.html, and posted it on the group’s Facebook page with the message “Government sites continue to be fondled,” in Arabic, according to Google Translate. The standard www.brookhavenny. gov website was not impacted and the propaganda page was not visible anywhere on the site, though “out of an abundance of caution,” the town server has been quarantined
Editorial comment
and the town webpage was taken down. The website was restored as of Tuesday afternoon. The propaganda page has been taken down and currently lists an error message. “You will be held accountable Trump, you and all your people for every drop of blood flowing in Muslim countries,” the message read in part. Panico said he was alerted about the issue after a town employee notified the town’s information technology department about the breach after reading a New York Post story published at about 1:30 p.m. with information about the Facebook post by the group. Panico was asked if it was concerning the town was alerted by media reports rather than its own security defenses. “It was a Sunday, and I don’t know anyone in our IT department that checks ISISrelated Facebook pages,” he said. “We’re pretty thorough here at the town, but I don’t know that our IT department combs the pages of those people who hate America.” Romaine said officials from a Suffolk County cybercrimes unit were speaking with the town’s IT director while the press conference was going on, and the FBI with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would assist in investigating the breach. Romaine added U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) offered full assistance of federal investigative personnel to get to the bottom

Brookhaven supervisor Ed romaine address a hack of town servers during a press conference June 26. of the incident, and the supervisor had also been in contact with the office of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Monday. “It’s disconcerting and we don’t write it off as a prank,” Romaine said during the press conference. “We take threats like this, cyber threats, seriously.” Panico said no information was extracted from the website or servers, and possible actions to prevent future breaches are part of
the investigation. He also said it is unclear how long the servers were infiltrated by the hackers. Panico disputed claims the message was posted on the town website’s home page. Romaine said this was the first time the town had suffered a breach like this. “None of our records that we know of were breached,” Panico said, adding that the town’s financial information is stored on the cloud off-site on different servers. Zeldin addressed the hack in an emailed statement through spokeswoman Jennifer DiSiena. “I will continue to do anything in my power to improve cyber security and protect against other threats facing our nation at home and abroad,” he said. Marisa Kaufman, a spokeswoman from Schumer’s office, said in an email they have been in contact with Brookhaven about the issue and are looking into the matter. Schumer sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly urging him to launch an immediate investigation into the incident. “The possibility that these breaches were done by an ISIS or terror-affiliated organization is especially troublesome; citizens deserve to feel like their everyday critical infrastructure, especially their local government’s website, is safe and usable,” the letter said.

Seniors graduate
With “Pomp and Circumstance” playing, 35 residents of the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, wearing mortarboards and gowns, received their diplomas at the 29th Annual Gurwin Adult Education Graduation Ceremony Wednesday, June 14, at the Gurwin Center, in Commack. Mr. Fuchs, 96, formerly of Queens, graduated from high school in 1937, but did not continue on to college due to family obligations. Instead, he took a job to help his parents, working in a millinery for 30 cents per hour. In 1942 Irving enlisted in the Army/Air Force, and flew 75 combat missions during World War II; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross, the nation’s second highest award for military valor, for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.” Irving retired from a 40-year career with the US Postal Service and has lived at Gurwin since 2012. Mr. Digiacomo, 88, formerly of Bayport, dropped out of high school to help his family’s bakery business when his two brothers left to fight in World War II. Freddie later joined the Navy, and never had a chance to complete his formal education. Now a resident at Gurwin, Freddie eagerly attends the Center’s Adult Education classes, which he says gave him the ability to keep his mind sharp and make new friends.
As part of the program, students completed one course per month from September to April, including “The History of New York,” “Understanding the Inventions that Changed the World,” and “Extreme Weather,” as well as programs in art and culture. Courses were taught by Center staff. Each September residents vote, choosing the curriculum from a list of topics; staff members research the topics in order to plan the coursework. “Tonight’s commencement ceremony is a testament to the will and determination of a generation that values hard work, sacrifice… and education,” Herbert H. Friedman, CEO of Gurwin said. “Their perseverance and commitment serves as a sign to
us all that learning is a lifelong journey, that personal and intellectual growth is achievable into the golden years. We are proud of the accomplishments of our remarkable residents.” On hand to congratulate the graduates were Huntington Town Councilwomen Susan A. Berland (D) and Tracey Edwards (D), and representatives from New York State Sen. John Flanagan’s (R-East Northport) and New York State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci’s (R-Huntington Station) offices, who presented the graduates with certificates. The ceremony closed with a “graduates’ cheer,” including the tossing of caps in celebration of their achievement.

Clockwise from left, Elwood-John Glenn’s damien Caffrey jets up the field; Ward Melville’s John Corpac makes a one-handed grab and scampers into the end zone; and Ward Melville’s Eddie Munoz makes a stop during Ward Melville’s first showing in the Empire Challenge football game.
Local athletes take part in Empire Challenge all-star football game By Bill landon A late Long Island-hit drew a penalty, leaving New York City with an even bigger advantage with two seconds left on the clock in the 22nd annual Empire Challenge football game. Monsignor Farrell kicker Paul Inzerillo tried to draw Long Island offside without success but, just ahead of a delay of game flag, sent the ball flying as the clock ran down to zero, and nailed the 32-yard field goal attempt to snatch a NYC victory, 37-35, from Long Island. The June 21 loss marks the second year in a row Long Island lost in dramatic fashion at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. “That penalty hurt us,” Elwood John Glenn wide receiver Damien Caffrey said. “But to play in this game is a dream come true.” A Long Island interception led to NYC’s first touchdown of the game, with four minutes left in the opening quarter. But Ward Melville senior John Corpac received a pass from Long Island quarterback Aaron Ruthman, of Elmont, and bolted down the right sideline for the touchdown. Christian Carrick, of New Hyde Park, added the extra point to tie the game, 7-7. NYC took the lead with the team’s second touchdown of the game, but the kick failed and left Long Island with a chance to pull ahead. Ward Melville wide receiver Dominic Pryor, already looking comfortable on his new field — where he will play, instead, lacrosse next year — was found twice for big yardage. The first connection was for 18 yards to NYC’s 40-yard line and the second, was for 28 yards

to the 5. Two plays later, Farmingdale running back Jordan McLune took advantage of that opportunity by capping of a six-play, 58-yard drive, and Carrick’s kick gave Long Island the lead, 14-13, with 7:14 left in the first half. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as NYC scored another touchdown, but the twopoint conversion play failed. “It’s tough to come out and play football in June, but I was so motivated to come out here and play with such great athletes, and play my hardest,” Pryor said. “[NYC is] just a hard-nosed team with great athletes.” It looked like a Ward Melville football game from there on out, though, as Pryor, who caught five passes for 89 and two touchdowns, scored his first on a 24-yard pass from Ruthman on fourth and 7, making it 21-19 Long Island at halftime. Pryor got the call again on the next score, as the Ruthman-Pryor tag team connected on a 17-yard pass. Carrick’s kick lifted Long Island to a 28-19 advantage. “[This game] it’s just something that I’m blessed to be in,” Pryor said. “It’s a great event with everything that it stands for, and I’m glad to be a part of it.” Before Wednesday’s game, no Patriot had played in the Empire Challenge. With cornerback Eddie Munoz also on the field, it put not two, but three Patriots in the Empire Challenge for the first time. But New York, held to 17 yards in the second half until midway through the fourth quarter, exploded for a five-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a 45-yard touchdown from Christian Anderson to Seba Nekhet. The PAT made it 28-26 Long Island with seven minutes left in regulation. NYC’s defense forced Long Island to punt from deep
in its own end and the city took advantage of the favorable field position to score on Siddiq Muhamad’s 12-yard run. The special team completed a two-point conversion that brought the score to 34-28, NYC. Corpac continued the strong Ward Melville showing as he handled another punt return 83 yards, going coast to coast to tie the game. “I was telling my teammates on the sidelines, ‘I gotta take this one back,’” Corpac said. “’I got to do it.’ And sure enough, I saw the hole and I took it.” Carrick, who was perfect on the evening, put Long Island ahead, 35-34, with 2:44 left in the final quarter.
NYC threw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock, and got a gift when Long Island was flagged for a late hit. The 15-yard penalty brought NYC to Long Island’s 22-yard line. “I was scared leading by a point with eight seconds left,” Caffrey said. “It was pretty crazy, because their offense is really good. They brought it to a whole new level.” Corpac, who is bound for Stony Brook University’s football team in the fall, echoed his longtime teammate’s sentiment of the significance of the Empire Challenge. “It’s a great honor [to play in this game],” he said. “It’s the best way I could ask to end my high school football career.”

Letters to the editor
A plea for residents to get involved in local elections
Image from Facebook
An ISIS-inspired Facebook page posted a link to an anti-American propaganda page created using Brookhaven Town servers June 25.
Fear not and carry on While the week started off with panic in Brookhaven Town, at the Times Beacon Record News Media office, we quickly got back to business. The scene here Monday morning was probably similar to what occurred at many offices in Brookhaven and beyond. There were various conversations about the hacking of the town’s web server by a pro-ISIS group, and a common thread in the majority of the discussions was that no one could believe a terrorist group, or anyone supportive of them, would know the town even existed. Of course a few of us admitted to being a bit nervous, but we went on reporting, advertising reps continued to sell and our receptionist still answered the phone. It’s what most Americans have done since Sept. 11, 2001. We are more aware than ever that terrorists exist, and our country is not immune to their threats. But we stay vigilant, we report suspicious activity and continue to go about our day. Brookhaven was just one of 76 municipalities across the United States affected by the hack. No information was extracted from the servers, according to town officials, so it would seem the hack was nothing more than an attempt to strike fear into residents. The hack now seems symbolic more so than substantive. Yes, attacks, whether physical or viral, are unsettling, but we as Americans can’t live in fear. If we gave into that fear, we wouldn’t have wonderful events like the graduation ceremonies featured in our six newspapers — ceremonies that are filled with young adults who grew up well aware of terrorist attacks and wars, but who still dream big about the future. Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville) said part of future investigations will be researching how to prevent breaches, which we obviously commend and hope is accomplished. If a hacking of a town’s website was an attempt to scare us, it didn’t work.
I love my country and my community. It is for this reason that I along with a dedicated and committed group of citizens have launched the campaign for Huntington Town supervisor. Our path has been fraught with a great many obstacles and challenges, yet our resolve has never been stronger, because we appreciate what is at stake: representative government. Be assured, this is not a melodramatic statement, but rather a warning. On May 25, the Huntington Democratic Committee (of which I am a proud member of the executive committee) held a designation convention for supervisor and council. Only committee members can participate in this process and the vote is done publicly. To be clear, if you are not a member of the committee despite being a Democrat and resident in the Town of Huntington, you cannot participate in this process. A significant number of the committee people work for the town, have interests with town business and are related to the candidates. Tracey Edwards, Mark Cuthbertson and Emily Rogan gained overwhelming support from the committee. Many people have mistakenly assumed from the conclusion of this process that the designated candidates were the nominees. This is wrong.
licans and Democrats voted for Trump in a deeply divisive election. Many voted for Trump because they have come to feel that the political establishment no longer represents the constituents. The people at every level have come to believe that their representatives no longer represent them. The above time line demonstrates why people legitimately feel this frustration. This leads to low voter turn out and recently to the rise of Trump. Since the election, the national political scene has been dominated by scandal, intrigue and chaos. These are symptoms of a sick republic and the only remedy is for YOU the people to become involved. Some will read this letter and object to its points. Others will read it and rationalize the status quo. Regardless of how you may feel, I implore you to get involved: join Tracey’s campaign, Chad’s campaign, join our campaign! Learn for yourself. I also plead and demand that the primary be allowed to happen. Only through your engagement and the unhindered democratic process, including a primary, can we preserve our government of, for and by the people.

Residents need to lend a hand in water quality
As we enter into the summer months and enjoy the waterways that we’re blessed to have here in Suffolk County, the quality of our water comes to the forefront of our awareness. Year after year we are faced with the consequences of nitrogen pollution in our waterways that come in the form of various strains of harmful and toxic algae such as brown tide and red tide. As a result, our salt marshes that serve as fish habitat are depleted, oxygen levels are suppressed causing fish kills, shellfish populations are reduced and our beaches close to protect public health. Reversing these trends and cleaning up our waters is a top priority of mine and my colleagues in Suffolk County. We have made tremendous progWe welcome your letters. It must be understood we have a representative government, which states clearly the people shall determine who the candidates are and ultimately elect those individuals to office. Committees do not decide elections. On June 6, all candidates committed to running for office despite the outcome of the designating convention were permitted to begin the petition collection process. Our campaign has worked tirelessly since then to acquire the needed number of signatures (of Democratic Huntington residents) to get on the ballot. One thousand signatures are required; however, we realize we will need twice that number in anticipation of petition challenges. On July 12, the petitions will be due to the Board of Elections. We are working hard to acquire 3,000 signatures, because our opponents are committed to stopping the primary. Prediction: The establishment with all its power, resources and money will seek to crush the growing movement, by challenging our petitions, and ultimately knocking us off the ballot: Tracey Edwards becomes the chosen candidate and there is no primary in September. On Nov. 8, 2016, Donald Trump (R) was elected the 45th president of the United States. Both Repub-
of us that will require multiple stakeholders working together on all fronts. In 2013, I worked closely with Northport Village Trustees to help identify funding for the upgrades to their failing sewage treatment plant. The upgrades resulted in a massive reduction in the plant’s nitrogen discharge, which has produced tangible outcomes including the absence of red tide in the Northport Harbor and the reopening of Centerport Beach to bathers after being closed for 7 years. Sewers for our downtown centers are part of the solution, but we also have to address the major contributor to nitrogen pollution caused by the 360,000 homes in Suffolk County utilizing cesspools for their wastewater. Toward that effort, the Suf-
folk County Legislature has laid the groundwork with the recent unanimous approval of a $10 million grant program to assist homeowners in paying for the innovative systems. Beginning July 1, applications for homeowners will be available electronically. Visit http://reclaimourwater. info/ for more information. With a love for our beaches, bays and harbors, I am confident that through collaborative efforts we will overcome this issue that has plagued us for decades and reclaim our water for future generations to come.

OpiniOn ‘Tis the season for wallowing in nostalgia
W
aves of nostalgia can hit at any time. They tend to wash ashore more frequently in between graduations with their “look back, look forward” speeches and weddings. During these transition phases, we recall the days gone by, whether we’re suddenly comparing a memory from a few years to a decade or more earlier. We watch our children stretch out surprisingly long arms to take By Daniel Dunaief a diploma and shake the hand of a school official, recalling how those hands used to reach up high to grab ours as we crossed the street.
D. None of the above
We listen to their confident voices as they share detailed, measured and elaborate opinions about politics, sports, social issues or music. At the same time, we replay the high voices in our heads when they shared thoughts that weren’t so complex, as in “Jimmy Neutron is the best.” When my wife and I walk around town, we frequently stop outside Tball baseball games, where we soak in the figurative nostalgia bathtub. Johnny swings at seven pitches before he finally dribbles a ball foul. The exhausted coach encourages Johnny to “run, run, run!” Once the boy reaches first base, a small smile fills a round face that will get longer and leaner in the days ahead, until he reaches the stage where he rolls his eyes when people around him speak of sports because he and his razor stubble have tuned into the world of guitars and rock bands. For some high school graduates,
home has become a launchpad, where the NASA countdown to lift off for college will thrust them to a new location. And then there are the brides and grooms, whose parents may recall their own weddings even as they smile at the way their children are planning to have people on stilts passing out hors d’oeuvres. The reason no one else thought of it, we think, is because it seems impractical, even though we don’t say that because we don’t want to rain on our children’s parade. The parents of the bride and groom may remember the people who surrounded them at their wedding, from family members to important friends. Parents may have spent extra time searching through alumni directories or online listings to find the addresses of some of those important friends they haven’t seen in decades to invite them to another can’t-miss wedding.
Parents may stare at their children and recall the long journey from the cooties and a fear fascination with love and romance, to this moment when their child plans to travel the rest of his or her life with this marital partner. What good does nostalgia do? It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, while overlaying memories with current experiences. While we’re dancing to music we heard years ago, maybe at our own weddings or on an early date with a future spouse, we may close our eyes and reconnect with the younger version of ourselves. We remember who we were and who we wanted to be. We may laugh, realizing how far we have to go, or boost our resolve as we observe the changes in ourselves and others around us that encourage us to believe that anything, improbable or difficult though it may seem, is still possible.
Our Independence Day values conquer all
A
s we are filming “One Life to Give,” the Battle of Long Island, which took place at the beginning of our Revolutionary War in 1776, and the dramatic story of Nathan Hale, ISIS has come knocking on Brookhaven’s door in 2017. What? You may say, ISIS from the faraway lands of Syria and Afghanistan, those violently troubled, wartorn places in the Middle East reaching out to our serene little township? So it seems. This past Sunday, an extra page was found to be on the By Leah S. Dunaief official town site. This page, from a group called Team System Dz, conveyed some unpleasant pro-ISIS thoughts through Facebook and, according to Brookhaven, not directly from the town website. Why are we on the group’s radar?
Between you and me
Who knows? But they have been sending messages like the one we received here throughout the country to 76 municipalities all told, according to town Councilman Dan Panico. Along with these assaults, similar messages were found on several Ohio government websites, including that of Gov. John Kasich. This particular group has hacked into many government websites around the world in recent years, according to a story in Newsday. As we know, these terrorist groups are looking to spread fear, and the internet enables them to reach across the globe even as their physically occupied territory shrinks from allied military efforts to defeat them. Homeland Security officials are actively investigating the event, but for us the timing is particularly meaningful. Here we are, filming the story of the birth of our nation, some 240 years ago, and realizing most meaningfully the values and freedoms under which we live. Those we hail as Patriots gave their lives and fortunes, in some cases, so that these inalienable rights of our society might come down through the centuries to us. We don’t live in fear of being gassed or dismembered
by our government. We have the right to criticize our leaders without disappearing. We live under the rule of a Constitution that was forged in democracy, and none of these facts are lost on us as we film the events and the people who made it happen more than two centuries ago. Approaching July Fourth, we are profoundly grateful for our nation, warts and all. As we covered the story of the town’s hacked website, we needed to decide how to run the article in our papers. We briefly considered putting the ISIS event on the front page, then immediately chose instead to lead with one of the values that make us who we are: our educational system. As you can see, we have given prominence to graduations. We are the hometown papers and we prize our students and their accomplishments. We wouldn’t dream of destroying schools and slaughtering teachers. Our educational system makes democracy possible, and that is what totalitarian regimes fear. Our residents know how to read and write and, we sincerely hope, tell propaganda from real news. From the battlefield of Long
