Smithtown Library passed their proposed budget after resident votes Tuesday.

Smithtown library budget approved, incumbents and newcomer voted in

An exceptionally fine collection of estate jewelry priced from under $100 to many thousands, awaits you right in the heart of Stony Brook Village.

By VICTORIA ESPINOZA VICTORIA@TbRnewspApeRs.COm Smithtown Library’s $14.3 million budget was overwhelmingly approved Tuesday Oct. 11, with 1,018 yes votes to 307 no votes. The budget is a 1.13 percent increase and will cost homeowners about $12.85 more than last year’s budget. Salary and employee benefits make up the majority of the budget, coming in at about $10.5 million, and then about $1 million for a debt service-expansion referendum. Library Trustees Gerard Cairns and Joseph Vallone were both elected to another term, and newcomer Anita Dowd-Neufeld won a seat on the board as well. Cairns, who received 1,008 votes, said he wanted to focus in updating technology and ensuring the library is a useful community resource. “Technology is rapidly changing and the library must continue to strategically develop new ways to deliver services in partnership with our communities,” he said in a statement. “This would include, of course, book lending, research, a wide variety of course offerings for all ages, DVD lending, individual and small group consultations with librarians, access for com-

munity groups needing a venue, availability of computers and other media, showcase art and other member achievements and concerts.” Vallone, who received 1,067 votes agreed about the importance of technology use in the library. “I want to help the Library stay on the cusp of technological trends and continue to address patron interests,” he said in a statement. “I will also continue to explore avenues for grants through governmental agencies and private foundations.” Dowd-Neufeld, who received 1,052 votes, said she would work to make sure the library continues to offer programs to the residents. “My goals would be to assist the trustees and the staff in continuing to promote these programs to the communities we are part of,” she said in a statement. “This would include increased outreach to undeserved populations, such as the disabled and other special need minority groups. I would also assist staff and trustees in coordinating and executing fundraising events and submitting grant proposals for funding special projects and initiatives.” There were 25 write-in ballots, according to the library.

Changes to Common Core met with mixed reviews By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com The New York State Education Department wants teachers and parents to weigh in on changes to Common Core State Standards, and voices are already criticizing the proposals. The department released a draft of new learning standards for public comment at the end of last month, which included recommendations to change 60 percent of the English language arts standards and 55 percent of the math standards for New York state. The recommendations came from two committees comprised of more than 130 parents and teachers and included creating a new early learning task force and a glossary of math verbs and English terms. Middle Country Central School District Superintendent Roberta A. Gerold said teachers in the district will be reviewing the changes and submitting their commentary made throughout the month of October. “I think that it’s good that state education is asking for teacher’s perspectives and comments on whether or not the revisions are appropriate,” Gerold said. “It says to me that they’re not finished with their revisions, because there are still adjustments that need to be made. Some of them were simple language changes, but I think there’s still more solid work that needs to be done.” The NYS Allies for Public Education applauded the committee’s efforts but said due to the confining nature of the state education department the results are not substantive content changes. “The result of their efforts is essentially just a rebranding of the Common Core,” the group said in a statement. Comsewogue school district Superintendent Joe Rella echoed those sentiments. “The overriding opinion is that it’s more of the same,” he said in a phone interview. “They didn’t really make any substantive changes. These are more revised phrasing and language. They’re attached at the hip to the original standards.” He also said the department should have looked at the use of standards themselves.

new york has updated changes to common core to try and help students achieve the most successful level of education. “It was not meant to do anything but review the current standards,” Rella said. “They never got into the bigger picture, which is the appropriateness of the standards.” The superintendent said he is not anticipating anything different this school year because of the proposed modifications. Jim Polansky, superintendent at Huntington school district, also questioned how effective these changes would be to districts. “The truth is that the large majority of those changes are immaterial,” he said in an email. “There is still a chance that additional modifications to the new draft standards will be made following the comment period; however, I don’t anticipate that any further changes will be particularly significant either. I do not necessarily believe that the new set will be drastically different from the current Common Core.” NYS Education Department Commis-

sioner MaryEllen Elia said committee members spent a year listening to public comment before drafting new standards. “Dedicated teachers, parents and educators from across the state put in countless hours to develop these new draft standards,” Elia said in a statement. “Teachers will be able to use these standards as a basis for developing their curricula and lesson plans to meet the needs of students in their classrooms. These changes reflect what I have heard from parents, teachers and administrators over the past year in my travels across the state.” For the ELA changes, five subcommittee groups based on grade levels reviewed the original standards to see if they met the criteria for what a student should know and be able to perform at their grade level, and recommended new areas to improve standards. Specific changes include more focus on students in prekindergarten to second grade,

with an early learning task force that discusses issues for younger learners, teaching from a wider variety of texts, and developing clear communication with parents so they understand the curriculum and assignments their children are given. Math changes include creating a glossary of verbs associated with mathematics, maintaining the rigor of standards so students are aware of what is expected of them at every grade level and providing more time for students to understand mathematics content. Smithtown Superintendent James Grossane said his district intends to give a thorough response to the state on the changes. “Some of the new standards reflect changes that we had already made in our local curriculum and instruction based on our own teacher and administrator input,” he said in an email. “We are providing detailed feedback to the NY State Education Department on the revised standards and will await final adoption before making any additional local changes.” Middle Country Central School District Superintendent Roberta A. Gerold also said the reactions from the public are an important part of the process. “I know that there’s some debate going around the state whether the changes were deep enough or developmentally appropriate,” she said. “I think all of that information will be more valid once the feedback is received from all of the stakeholders.” To review the new English standards in more detail visit the website www.nysed. gov/draft-standards-english-language-arts, and for math standards see www.nysed. gov/draft-standards-mathematics. The public can also comment on the changes by completing a grade-level specific survey. The public comment period ends Nov. 4.

Governor approves standards for lead levels in schools By ReBecca anzel

— andrew cuomo File photo

new standards will require school districts in new york state to test for lead in water.

151096

Drinking water in public schools across the state will soon conclude testing for lead contamination. Legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in September makes New York the first state to mandate such testing. The law established a level of lead allowed in drinking water, initial and future testing requirements for schools and deadlines for notifying parents and staff of results. “These rigorous new protections for New York’s children include the toughest lead contamination testing standards in the nation and provide clear guidance to schools on when and how they should test their water,” Cuomo said in a press release. Schools are more likely to have raised lead levels because intermittent use of water causes extended water contact with plumbing fixtures. Those installed before 1986, when federal laws were passed to restrict the amount of lead allowed in materials, might have a higher amount of lead. “We know how harmful lead can be to the health and well-being of young children, and that’s why the Senate insisted on testing school water for lead,” state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said in a statement. “As a result, New York becomes the first state in the nation to perform this testing and protect millions of its students from potential health risks.” Lead consumption by children is especially harmful because behavioral and physical effects, such as brain damage and reduced IQ, happen at lower levels of exposure, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Even low levels of lead exposure can cause hearing loss, nervous system damage and learning disabilities. In adults, lead can cause damage to the reproductive system, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The new law required schools teaching children in prekindergarten through fifth grade to test drinking water by Sept. 30 and schools with children from grades six through 12 to complete testing by the end of October. This affects in excess of 700 school districts and 37 BOCES locations in the state, consisting of more than 5,000 school buildings, according to the state. Private schools are exempt from this testing. Any lead level exceeding 15 micrograms per liter must be reported by the school to the local health department within one business day. Schools are also mandated to share the test results with parents and staff in writing and to publish a list of lead-free buildings on their websites. Glenn Neuschwender, president of Enviroscience Consultants, a Ronkonkoma-based environmental consulting firm, said to a certain extent, these deadlines are a challenge, especially those pertaining to the test results. “I’ve been speaking to the county health department — they’re currently not prepared to receive that data,” Neuschwender said in a phone interview. “The same would go for the state Department of Health. They’re not currently prepared to start receiving data yet, but they’ve told me that they will be within the coming weeks.” The cost of a lead analysis ranges from $20 to $75 per sample and must be conducted by a laboratory approved by the Environmental Laboratory Approval Program. Long Island Analytical Laboratories in Holbrook and Pace Analytical Services in Melville are two approved labs, according to the state Department of Health. If the level of lead in a sample exceeds what the law allows, the school is required to prohibit the use of that faucet until further testing shows the issue is rectified. The law also requires schools to conduct testing every five years. “The law is certainly, I would say, a work in progress,” Neuschwender said. “The law is very short in discussing remediation — it’s more specific to sampling and action-level objectives — so we expect to see some clarification on the remediation side of things as the law is revised.” Port Jefferson school district conducted voluntary testing of fixtures throughout the district this summer before Cuomo signed the law, and found small amounts of lead in nine locations. All nine fixtures have been replaced, according to Fred Koelbel, district plant facilities administrator.

‘These rigorous new protections for New York’s children include the toughest lead contamination testing standards in the nation and provide clear guidance to schools on when and how they should test their water.’

EXCELLENCE. WE MAKE AN ISSUE OF IT EVERY WEEK.

Port Jefferson Station is able to make a claim no other place on Long Island can: It’s home to the last brick-and-mortar magic store in all of Nassau and Suffolk County. Ronjo Magic & Costumes on Route 112 is the last of its breed, yet doesn’t look as if it’ll be performing a disappearing act anytime soon. The 2,000 square-foot store is stocked with magic trick pieces, novelty items, costumes and a room for performances. The costume articles include wigs, masks and an extensive line of hats that hang from the ceiling. The novelty section is small, but contains the usual gags, like exploding cigarettes, hand buzzers, itching powder and the obligatory rubber chickens. Last month, Hope Galasso, of Bellport, discovered Ronjo through a Google search and brought her 15-year-old nephew Zack Galasso to the store to purchase a Chinese coin trick for $7. While Halloween is the bread-and-butter season for costume sales, it’s not the only time they’re in demand. Last year, 19-year-old Suffolk County Community College student Christine Day came into the store with her brother and a friend. The trio was preparing to attend Comic Con, a convention for comics, graphic novels, anime, video games, toys and movies, in New York City. Her brother was dressing as Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and her friend was dressing as Beetlejuice. The three of them needed makeup. Owner Ron Diamond provided them with just what they needed. “We looked great,” Day said. She also said Diamond was “really helpful” and “inviting,” so when he offered her a part-time job at the store, she took it. Currently she handles data entry, shipment

of online orders, and works the counter for costumes and makeup. Diamond’s lifelong interest in magic began in 1966 when his mother bought him a magic kit called Box-o-Magic for $3 at Billy Blake’s department store in Setauket. Then 8 years old, Diamond said the box contained just a handful of tricks, but enough to get him started. Diamond continued to learn tricks, but with no magic store nearby, he resorted to learning new illusions from library books, and by age 12, even started to handcraft his own tricks with the help of a classmate. Diamond got the itch to perform. So at 13, he recruited a girl named Joanne from down the block to play the part of his onstage assistant. He wanted to give Joanne top billing, and name the act Joron, but his sister, Deborah, said he should call it Ronjo, so he did. Ronjo’s first public performances were free for local charities in Suffolk. Since the two performers were only in eighth grade, his mother had to drive them to wherever they were performing. Eventually, the charity work led to paying gigs. Their first was at a birthday party for a 6-year-old, where they made $6. Diamond kept $4, and paid Joanne $2. A year later, Diamond became more polished and added new tricks to the act, and with it, the price of a show jumped to $35. The clients from the first job called to book him again, but when he told them the new rate, they hung up. At 15, he thought he could make additional money by giving lessons and selling magic tricks in a retail setting. He talked one of the merchants at the Old Town Village indoor flea market in Setauket into let-

New technology used in surgery on North Shore By Joseph Wolkin

©151563

North Shore natives in need of a total knee replacement can now get a revolutionary surgery right in their own backyard. In July, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital became one of the first in the United States to conduct a robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery. Laurie Mullens, a patient at the hospital, hopes she is on her way to being painfree, following a groundbreaking surgery she received at John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson in late July. She said she has dealt with painful arthritis in her knees for more than a decade. The 63-year-old Farmingdale resident thought she tried everything to alleviate her knee pain. Mullens was frustrated, as the pain was not allowing her to walk properly. She lived with what she described as severe and sharp pains in her knees, and when treatments failed to reduce her pain, Mullens opted to have knee replacement surgery. On March 17, Mullens had her first knee replacement surgery at Mather. While recovery time after the surgery usually takes six months to a year, after four months she said she wasn’t feeling positive about her improvement. When the pain continued, she went back to Mather. Dr. Brian McGinley, who graduated from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, did something different with Mullens. Instead of performing

While the hospital has used robot assistance in partial replacement procedures for about a year, no one had used one for a total knee replacement yet. “It’s robotic-assisted surgery, so the robot is controlled by a computer,” McGinley said in a phone interview. “I control the data put in the computer, and I set the parameters of which I want to cut the ends of the bone. The robot allows me to match those parameters by one millimeter of my plan because it is so specific. When I’m cutting the surface of the bone, it turns off if I go more than one millimeter outside where I set it on the computer.” McGinley opted to use the robot for the

entire surgery, as opposed to the partial usage that is common at Mather. “They didn’t really tell me anything other than it was there to assist them in doing the surgery,” Mullens said. “It’s just assisting him, so I didn’t have to worry it wasn’t done by a surgeon.” The surgery featured the Navio Surgical System, which utilizes hand-held robotics. When done with the system, the procedure is meant to produce precise results for knee replacements. “We’ve been working on this project for two years, and we’ve been using computerassisted surgery at Mather for many years,” McGinley said. “Now, we have the next-step technology to have surgery that’s robotassisted. It’s completely safe because we’re

still in control, performing the function with the assistance of the robot. There are no real major errors that can be placed in the system. If the power fails, we still have our traditional instruments that we can use.” According to Blue Belt Technologies, creators of the Navio Surgical System, the robotic devices have led to reports of improved accuracy and repeatability of implant placement. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 757,000 knee replacement surgeries in the United States in 2011. While the end goal is to make the surgery quicker, Mullens’ surgery took 15 minutes longer than Dr. McGinley would have liked. “It’s a little slower right now because we’re still trying to figure out the methodology during the procedure,” McGinley said. “I’m expecting to get that time down in the operating room.” Since her July 20 surgery, Mullens said she has experienced aches and pains similar to the aftermath of her first operation. “It’s to be expected because I had both knees done,” she said. “It’s very swollen and it’s an uncomfortable recovery. That’s the way it goes. But I’m recovering very quickly — as quickly as to be expected.” The technology is currently being studied to see what can be improved in order to make it more efficient and eventually more widely used. According to McGinley, the doctors who are using the robot are coming together to see if it is a valid treatment option for patients.

Diamond added more showcases with more tricks for sale, and eventually landed his own 13 feet by 100 feet store at the Arcade Shopping Center in Port Jefferson Station at 16 years old. He stayed there for 14 years. As the years went on, Diamond became a professional magician, but Joanne was no longer in the act, because her father wanted her to get a “real job.” By 1982, he had a crew working for him, including, at times, a driver, a stagehand and other performers including a sword swallower, belly dancer and disc jockey. On occasion, customers in his store would ask for wigs, makeup and costumes. Since he never says no to a customer, he’d get whatever items they were looking for. In 1991, Diamond hired Pete Albertson, who was one of his students, to manage the store. He’s been there for 25 years. Diamond purchased his current location in 2000. When Magic Shop in Hicksville closed three years ago, Ronjo became the last surviving magic store on Long Island. The storefront acquired a little slice of cyberspace and joined the internet in 2003. The website saw tremendous growth over a five-year period, which peaked in 2008, almost to the point where physical store was no longer needed. But all that changed when more and more retailers began selling online, and cyber sales dropped considerably. Now, there are “more websites than customers,” he said. On the magic side, Ronjo’s customers range from the loyal to the new. Mike Maimone of Port Jefferson Station has been purchasing tricks from Ronjo since he was 12. He’s now 48. He owns nearly 350 decks of cards — each for a different illusion —

More than half of them were purchased at Ronjo. The uncertainty of operating a shop that sells exclusively what amount to nonessential items looms over Diamond and his business, but for now, Long Island’s only magic store is still here. “Everything here is a luxury,” he said.

Smithtown West scores sixth straight win Bulls blank Blue Devils for fifth shutout this season By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Brandon Erny has now scored the game-winning goal in four of the last five games for his Smithtown West boys’ soccer team. In the Bulls’ 2-0 victory over Huntington Oct. 10, Erny knocked in Smithtown West’s first goal with 22 minutes left in the first half. A senior co-captain, Erny made his way through midfield and passed the ball to junior Andrew McDonnell at his left. Erny then booked his way to the top of the box, grabbed the ball back from McDonnell and tapped it into the far left corner for the early advantage and ultimately, his team’s six straight win. “I just wanted to get the ball up top,” he said. “I made the quick pass to Andrew and wanted to get the ball back as quick as possible. This was an important win today.” Senior co-captain Aaron Siegel made

multiple leaping grabs throughout the first half to preserve his clean sheet. “I felt good today,” he said. “I was vocal, did really good in the air. All of their chances were basically long throw-ins,

which I came out collecting. I was good on the line today and the back row did pretty well too, so that helped a lot.” Huntington senior defender Matthew Gelb, with his mighty throw-ins, gave his team much of their chances at a goal, but the forwards had trouble capitalizing on any opportunities at the net. Huntington junior goalkeeper Nat Amato was also strong between the pipes. Less than three minutes into the second half, McDonnell received the ball in the first half of Huntington’s zone, and moved it toward Amato — who started coming out of the box — and failed to beat him out as the goalkeeper made the stop. Amato did the same on a rebound opportunity. A minute later after a corner-kick send in, McDonnell got his head on the ball for the 2-0 lead. Siegel said he knew Huntington was going to be a formidable opponent. “It’s a tough win every year,” he said. “Huntington is really tough, always challenging. They have a coach over there who gets them energized. They always come at us full speed.” He said his team stayed focused on Friday during practice to earn the win, his fifth shutout of the season and third Erny said heading into the matchup at home, and will hope to do the same this Friday when his 10-1 top-seeded that the team will work on its defense against the closely-ranked team takes on No. 2 NewWolverines in the hopes field (9-1-1 League III). that the Bulls can hold it Siegel said the game down in the remaining will help them prepare for two games against West a postseason push. OPINION Editorial

A political cartoon depicting the second presidential debate this past Sunday.

Graphic by Mike Sheinkopf

Letter to the editor File photo

Donald Trump has received a lot of backlash for private comments he made in 2005 regarding his boastful treatment of women.

The right to be offended As an editorial staff, we have an opinion. … The first half of that sentence isn’t necessary in order to reveal what we think. And that is the exact problem we have had with this past weekend’s news cycle. Political leader after political leader came out this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday to condemn Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s leaked comments, bragging about being able to commit sexual assault against women. One of the common themes from legislators who pulled their endorsements was “As a father of daughters” or “As a brother with sisters — or a mother,” they were offended. Two problems here: You don’t need to be a “someone” in order to be offended, you can simply be offended. And why is it that women are repeatedly being referred to as a sister, a daughter or a mother? A presidential candidate talked about how he can sexually assault women because he is a star. A woman doesn’t need to be anything to be offended, threatened or violated by that sentiment. A man is also not disqualified from finding Trump’s comments reprehensible simply because he is a man. Women don’t need to give birth or have a brother before they can be victimized by Trump’s words. Men don’t need to be married to condemn sexual assault. It should not matter your role, your background or your stature — no one should need to back up or justify why they are against sexual assault. They just should be.

Does Lee Zeldin represent me?

Many Republican candidates for Congress find themselves in an uncomfortable position this election season. Should they endorse Donald Trump, a dangerously uninformed, narcissistic, misogynistic and vindictive candidate or try and dissociate themselves from him? Rep. Lee Zeldin has no such qualms. From the very beginning and throughout the Republican primary season he has enthusiastically supported Trump. When Donald Trump insulted John McCain, Lee Zeldin said nothing. When Trump insulted a Gold Star mother because of her religion, Lee Zeldin said nothing. When Trump suggested a judge born in Indiana and confirmed by the Senate by a voice vote was incapable of ruling impartially because of his ethnicity, Lee Zeldin did say something. He acknowledged that Trump’s comment was racist but nonetheless reiterated his wholehearted support for Trump, and then bizarrely accused President Obama of being racist too! When Trump said he “always wanted to get the real Purple Heart,” as if this was some sort of joke, Lee Zeldin said nothing. And now, in the latest example of Trump’s true nature

being revealed, in a video recording of him explicitly and lewdly bragging about sexually assaulting women, still Lee Zeldin is as silent as the grave, even as the Republican leadership profess themselves “sickened” by Trump’s “repugnant” comments. Maybe it’s not surprising that Lee Zeldin enthusiastically endorses Trump. Echoing the “birther” lie that President Obama is a secret Muslim, Zeldin has claimed that either the president doesn’t know what he’s doing, or he knows “exactly what he is doing and is playing

for some other team.” Last year Zeldin addressed the Long Island chapter of Oath Keepers, an extremist group whose founder, Stewart Rhodes, stated that John McCain should be tried for treason and “hung by the neck until dead.” Both the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center have focused on Oath Keepers as a paranoid and delusional fringe group. Lee Zeldin is no Peter King, a Long Island Republican who opposed Trump during the nomination process. His unqualified support for Trump reveals Rep. Zeldin for what he is: a man pandering to extremists who finds nothing Trump says or does too low for him. What does it say about Rep. Zeldin that he unreservedly supports putting a man so utterly lacking in empathy and simple human decency in the Oval Office? A representative to Congress is supposed to represent the views of his or her constituents. This election voters should ask themselves: Does Lee Zeldin represent the views of Long Island? Does he represent me?

opinion Turning to past presidents for words of wisdom

W

here can we turn when the dialogue from, or about, our presidents seems to fall short? Fortunately, we can look to the imperfect presidents of the past, whose ideas and inspiration have, for years, proved much more than “just words,” and whose notions about who — and what — we can or should be has helped provide a compass for the country. James Garfield might be a good place to start: “We can not overestimate the fervent love of By Daniel Dunaief liberty, the intelligent courage and the sum of common sense with which our fathers made the great experiment of selfgovernment.” Garfield also proferred, “If wrinkles

D. None of the above

must be written on our brow, let them not be written on our heart. The spirit should never grow old.” Thomas Jefferson suggested a way to deal with growing personal frustration: “When angry, count 10, before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.” How about a few words from Rutherford B. Hayes who said, “He serves his party best who serves the country best.” Martin Van Buren advised, “It’s easier to do a job right, than to explain why you didn’t.” How about a quote from Honest Abe? “My dream,” Lincoln said, “is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last, best hope on Earth.” Or this one: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Here’s another Lincoln quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

Turning to the other side of the Civil War conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, said, “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” John Quincy Adams’ inspirational suggestion was, “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.” Chester A. Arthur said, “Men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken.” Harry S. Truman indicated, “No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.” Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking … is freedom.” Describing a country whose ancestors came from so many other nations, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us,

and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” FDR’s cousin Theodore Roosevelt said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Teddy also suggested, “Courtesy is as much a mark of a gentleman as courage.” John F. Kennedy, who saw his fair share of crises during a presidency cut short, said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity.” John Tyler offered these amusing and humbling words: “Here lies the body of my good horse, The General. For 20 years he bore me around the circuit of my practice, and in all that time he never made a blunder. Would that his master could say the same.” William Howard Taft pointedly said, “Politics, when I am in it, makes me sick.” An Eisenhower quote might be a fitting way to end: “America is best described by one word, freedom.”

Britain’s Baroness Jay brings warning of threat to democracy

A

baroness and former leader of the British House of Lords, Margaret Jay, came to Stony Brook University to speak to us about “The new populism in America and Britain: What has happened to our politics?” The talk, which was open to the public and well attended, drew parallels between Trumpism and the Brexit movement in Britain and served as one way to understand our preBy Leah S. Dunaief election frenzy. Populism, as a political ideology, views virtuous citizens as mistreated by small circles of elites to be overthrown. In Britain, where jobs are drying up and wages have been stagnant for those 31-59 years of age for decades, migrants have been pouring into the country — some 330,000 in the last year, looking for jobs and a good life.

Between you and me

Citizens are angry. The landscape has changed and a common cry is, “I don’t recognize the town I grew up in,” as a result of the changes. As a member of the European Union, Britain had open borders for laborers throughout the 28-member countries even as British workers could in turn move anywhere within the EU from Britain. Baroness Jay of Paddington, daughter of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, told us that there are four times as many Brits collecting unemployment insurance in Germany as there are Germans collecting unemployment in Britain. Nonetheless, the “elites” and the politicians are seen by the British middle class as being unresponsive and only self-serving, and there is a deep sense of insecurity in the country. In such an environment, the message, “Support Brexit to take back control,” resonates and sounds not dissimilar to “Make America great again.” These slogans would seem to pit the common people against the top 1 percent. Leaders of populist movements have certain characteristics in common, as the baroness pointed out. They tend to be blunt to the point

of crude. The media loves them for their irresistible sound bites and the attention they draw from the public, and offers them a platform. Interestingly in this comparison of Britain and the United States, those who would speak “for the people” are not actually “of the people.” They feel none of the economic insecurities but seek to identify with the millions of citizens. That is certainly the case with “billionaire” Trump and also the leaders of the Brexit campaign, who are from the upper classes. Populism is spreading in Europe. Will it spread here? That is the question Margaret Jay poses for us. For the United Kingdom, there are other serious issues. Will the four parts of the country stay together? Scotland and Northern Ireland resoundingly voted to stay in the EU, while Wales and England voted to leave. Also there is what the baroness described as an “unpleasant divide” between foreign workers, who are increasingly viewed as taking away jobs, benefits and even lifestyle, and the citizens. The Brexit vote seems to have given legitimacy to the antagonisms. Then there are the matters of

making separate trade agreements with 27 other countries, and the pound sterling exchange rate. Meanwhile what has Brexit done to the rest of the EU? Other countries, with similar movements, are stirring. There is even the thought that the Brexit vote may have caused matters to improve elsewhere, as politicians heed the message sent by the voters. The solution, proposed by Baroness Jay, lies in rebuilding the center. We must not become fortresses of isolation, she warns, either in trade or of xenophobia. Pluralism and diversity are the way of the future, and in the U.S. these ideas are baked into our democracy. To rebuild the center involves a role for education. Tellingly some 75 percent of the more educated in Britain voted to stay in the EU, while about the same number, 75 percent of the less educated, voted to leave. The latter are those for whom the present system is not working. And while this picture of current politics, is specific to Britain at the moment, the dark and unpleasant nature of this past Sunday’s presidential debate here would urge us to pay further attention to the people whose needs are not being met.
