Obituaries Robert Hough

Robert Hough, of Shoreham, died in April with his family by his side. He was 73. Robert was born Oct. 29, 1945 in New York to Helen W. Hough and Clearance L. Hough. He graduated from Port Jefferson’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in 1963 and was the 1966 national college wrestling champion, 167 pound class. For more than 40 years, he was a member of Local 138 Operating Engineers. In his free time, he loved to spend time with his family, boating, kayaking and flying airplanes, particularly a two-seater Grumman American and 337 Cessna twin engine Skymaster. Robert also performed service in the United States Naval Construction Battalion, better known as the Seabees, from the Naval Construction Force of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He is survived by many relatives, friends and loved ones who will miss him dearly, including siblings Peter D. Hough (Adele), Melinda Cowart, Timothy (Marina), Karen Hough, Edward Hough and Jane O’Neal (Rande); and his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces/nephews who enjoyed every story he told. Police

Cops arrest two alleged motorcycle gang members in Centereach Suffolk County Police said Sunday they have arrested two alleged motorcycle gang members in connection with drugs and weapon charges during a traffic stop in Centereach April 6. Police said a 6th Precinct police officer pulled over a vehicle, driven by Salvatore Manfredonia III, on Hawkins Road for failing to stop at a stop sign at around 8:45 p.m. Manfredonia was allegedly found to be in possession of Oxycodone. His passenger, John Balogh, was found in possession of a 9mm handgun. Police said Manfredonia is a member of the Satans Soldiers Motorcycle Club, and Balogh, a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club,

had just left the Hells Angels April Bash held on Lynbrook Street in Centereach. Manfredonia, 35, of 15 Louise Drive in West Nyack, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th Degree. Balogh, 58, of 1500 Parker Street 5B in the Bronx, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon 2nd degree, criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of marijuana. Balogh was arraigned at the 1st District court in Central Islip April 7, and is next set to appear in court April 12. Police said Manfredonia will be arraigned on a later date.

Suffolk County Police 6th Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Miller Place April 7. Margaret Befanis, of Port Jefferson Station, was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra eastbound on Route 25A and was turning left into North Country Plaza when a 2017 motorcycle, operated by Joseph Sinacore, of Miller Place, struck the car at around 1:40 p.m. Sinacore, 27, was airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. Befanis, 69,

was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson with minor injuries. Friends and family of Sinacore have asked the community for blood donations to Stony Brook University Hospital of either B- or O-. Appointments to donate blood can be set at 631444-3662. The vehicle and motorcycle were impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the 6th Squad police at 631-854-8652.

1,4-dioxane chemical a concern on Long Island

County water authority announces new rates BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Many have attributed New York state of having “the champagne of drinking water,” though in recent years concerns over water quality have grown, especially on Long Island. After toxic chemicals have been found in Long Island’s drinking water, 1,4-dioxane, has been found to be the chief concern on the Island, and currently it is not regulated by the state. The chemical has been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a likely carcinogen associated with liver and kidney damage after a lifetime of exposure to contaminated drinking water. In March, 1,4-dioxane was found in private drinking wells of two homes on Oakside Drive in Smithtown where results showed concentrations higher than 1 part per billion, which is the proposed recommendation by the New York State Drinking Water Quality Council in December 2018. It is not a definitive standard, and the state Health Department is expected to propose a water standard for 1,4-dioxane in the near future. As a result of the uncertainty surrounding the Island’s drinking water, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, beginning on March 25, sent informational letters and planned on visiting the 29 homes served by the wells along Smithtown’s Landing Avenue, Oakside Drive and Valley Avenue. From there, each homeowner would set up an appointment with the SCDHS and its staff will come and secure water samples from the wells. Grace Kelly-McGovern, public relations director at SCDHS said as of April 10 every homeowner received a letter regarding the surveys and 15 of the wells at these homes have already been sampled. Three more homeowners have requested samplings, but the department has yet to receive a response from the other 11 homeowners. According to Kelly-McGovern, once the samples are collected, they will be sent to the SCDHS lab, which is located in Yaphank, and will be tested for 1,4-dioxane and other contaminants. The process should take one to two months. She added it could take several months until homeowners are notified of the results of the samples. A concern of 1,4-dioxane is that it can’t be removed through conventional treatment methods and involves a complex process of mixing the contaminated water with hydrogen peroxide, treated with ultraviolet light and then gets sent to tanks filled with carbon where the rest of contaminants are filtered out. The Suffolk County Water Authority’s Central Islip treatment system currently has the sole advanced oxidation process system capable of removing 1,4-dioxane on Long Island, though it required state approval to get it. At a forum in early February, the Long Island Water Conference estimated the cost of treatment systems for close to 200 water wells contaminated by 1,4-dioxane to be at $840 million. Implementing these treatment systems, they said, could lead to higher water rates for homeowners. The conference coalition asked for additional state aid and for a delay in when they would have to meet the standard. As the issue for Long Island’s water providers continues, the SCWA board voted to create the first tiered-rate structure in the agency’s history April 1. The new rate structure took effect the same day and the base

drinking water charge for all customers will increase from $1.95 per thousand gallons to $2.028 per thousand gallons. The new tiered rate will be $2.34 per thousand gallons for all consumption over 78,540 gallons per quarter. Customers will only pay the tiered rate on water above 78,540 gallons per quarter, and the standard rate up until that point. According to the authority, the action is in accordance with an initiative undertaken by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which established a goal for suppliers of reducing peak season water use by 15 percent by 2021 in order to ensure the sustainability of water resources. “Conservation rate structures have been adopted all across the country to encourage Americans to adjust their water-use habits for the long-term preservation of available water resources,” Jeffrey Szabo, the SCWA chief executive officer said in a press release. “We expect the new rate structure to help protect ratepayers who are careful in their water use and help provide the continued viability of our aquifer system.” The 1,4-dioxane chemical has also been found in industrial solvents. A March study released by the Citizens Campaign for the Environment indicates the chemical is present in 65 of 80 household products tested, including baby products, shampoos, detergents and body washes. According to Adrienne Esposito, CCE executive director, the products were tested by the ALS environmental laboratory in Rochester which is certified by the state Department of Health. The CCE argues that the chemical could end up down the drain and seep into drinking water through septic systems or wells. Similarly, state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) has introduced a bill that would ban household products containing 1,4-dioxane in the state except in trace amounts. The bill is currently in committee.

Cottone started out in superhero cosplay portraying Captain America sidekick Bucky Barnes, at first likening the character to an almost-parody of American exceptionalism, but as he grew into it, he found that he saw the rational side of the hero, one who embodies the pinnacle of the American dream, one that centers around helping those who can’t help themselves. But in his heart, he’s always liked the character of Spider-Man, the story of a young man from Queens, an unlikely hero in the first place. He’s a shy young man, smart, but socially awkward. Though even after he’s bitten by a radioactive spider, it takes a tragedy, the death of his father figure, for him to come to terms with the need to help people, simply because he has the power to do so. “When I started in 2012, I wanted to inspire others to be their own heroes,” he said. “In high school, I struggled with confidence, I struggled with my drive. I struggled with finding a direction. When I realized I had the power, anybody could have the power to inspire others, that’s when I dedicated myself to being the best I could be for myself and for other people.” It’s become a lifestyle. He’s done extensive online research on the physique of Spider-Man. And though he’s been exercising since high school, he’s tailored his diet to fit the look. For a year, Cottone has been taking his coffee black to excise as much sugar from his diet as he can. The first spidery outfit Cottone bought came right after the release of the movie “Captain America: Civil War.” Upon first seeing the character, portrayed by Tom Holland, the Port Jeff Station native, and several of his friends, all thought the actor and character resembled him, in more ways than one. But those close to him know the comparison goes beyond the superficial. Port Jefferson Station native Nic Cottone puts on the mask and becomes Spider-Man, not in the way that he flings webs and swings around New York City, but that he uses the mask to make people’s days a little brighter. He said the mask does something to a person, makes them fit into the person they most want to be. “It’s because of the mask, nobody sees who you are, even if you’re scared nobody can see it,” Cottone said. Cottone, 24, is a cosplayer, one who dresses as a fictional character from all sorts of media, from television to movies and, of course, comic books. Cosplaying is often displayed at “nerdy” events like conventions, where those dressed up will sometimes act in character, often to the pleasure of those in attendance. The young man got his start at cosplaying when he was in eighth-grade, though he started focusing on comic book characters in 2011, and 2012 at the tail end of his time in high school. Since then, along with the nonprofit group of fellow cosplayers, the East Coast Avengers, Cottone has traveled throughout Long Island and far beyond, attending as Spider-Man for charity events and fundraisers. He assisted in

events like Kids Comic Con at Bronx Community College, looking to give kids a creative outlet along with others closer to home such as Miller Place video game shop Game On’s annual events that help children with autism. He’s attended functions with hospitals and has even professionally gone to children’s birthday parties, who often can’t contain their excitement in seeing Spider-Man in the ﬂesh. The Port Jefferson Station resident, who professionally as Spider-Man goes as LI Spider-Guy, is unassuming, a young man who speaks in subdued tones that rise in pitch whenever he has the opportunity to speak about his passions. Most of those passions take the form of helping his fellow man. “It’s just incredible I guess,” Cottone said. “It’s the feeling you get when you can make people happy, when you can make people smile.”

character of Peter Parker ever was. “Peter Parker took a long time to realize his destiny, but Nic just knows,” Pedragon said. “He believes in his journey, he believes in what he does. Even when things are going rough with him I do see that he just pushes forward. In my eyes I think he’s better. That’s how I see him. Personality-wise he’s stronger mentally than Peter Parker ever was in the comic books.” The first suit he bought was from a company called Zentaizone, but when Joshua Darbee, the owner of Red Shirt Comics in Port Jefferson, asked him to attend free comic book day in May 2017, Cottone decided to go all out and buy a suit from RPC Studios, which many in the cosplay community see as some of the highest quality, movie prop level quality spidery suits. He now owns several suits, all different variations of the same character from movies, video games and the comics. It’s a commitment in both time and money, but the 24-year-old said it’s worth it to be the most authentic superhero he can be. Since it opened in 2017, Cottone had become a regular in Red Shirt Comics. Darbee bonded with the young man over comics and days of conventions gone by. It’s also how the store owner learned about the young man’s compunction to use superhero costumes to help people. “The best story I have about Nic, the day he earned his CPR certification, he came in and he just wanted to share it, he was so proud and so happy,” Darbee said. “It was characters like Spider-Man and Captain America who were always so willing to go that extra mile for their fellow man, that he wanted to at least in some small way to be able to be there for somebody else, so he went out of his way to get that CPR certification, so if there was an emergency, he could be there for someone.” Cottone graduated from Suffolk County Community College with a degree in psychology before moving on to Queens College looking at elementary education. First, he intended to become a high school teacher, but later he moved onto elementary, seeing it as a way to better help people develop in their formative years. He became disillusioned with the larger education system, saying it emphasized learning to the curriculum rather than developing as a person. After graduating from Queens College, Cottone returned to Long Island where he spent a year as a teaching assistant at the Maryhaven facility in Port Jeff, where he assisted children with developmental disabilities. Now he’s looking for full-time work while doing tutoring and working with children with autism. To hear him say it, all the best things that have come to him recently have been because of Spider-Man. He met his girlfriend because of his love of the character and of comics in general. Better still, he doesn’t think he will stop any time soon. “Ultimately we are alive for a very small amount of time, to be able to enjoy the things you’re passionate about is something very important to me,” he said. “It’s another aspect of life imitating art.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats boys lacrosse team is on a tear, making short work of visiting Sayville with an 18-8 league victory April 6 to remain unbeaten. The Wildcats, a perennial powerhouse in the postseason, sit atop their division at 6-0. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 86-29 through six games, where their closest was an 8-6 win against Bayport-Blue Point in their season home opener. The Wild-

Editorial Value newspapers There’s something real about a newspaper, and it goes beyond the ink and page, beyond the action of picking one up at the drugstore or plucking it from the mailbox. We who work at TBR News Media imbue the paper, the one you hold in your hands right now, with our labor. If you could see us at our work, you would know just how hard and long we work to provide the community with as much local content as we can. Truly, the paper is alive. While we editors and reporters are active in the community every day, we know the lives of the people behind the paper are not front and center. Behind each of those bylines you might read in the paper today is a person researching, interviewing and eventually rapidly typing each deliberated word hunched over a desk. Each picture is edited and placed within the blocks of text. The ads are crafted by graphic designers spending hours arranging each one. We’re hardly some sort of news assembly line, working out of some monolithic New York City skyscraper. Our tiny, two-story office is located right here on the North Shore, blending into the surrounding rustic buildings of Setauket. This past weekend, a team from TBR News Media traveled up to Albany for the annual New York Press Association convention. Hundreds of reporters, editors and publishers from papers from across the state gather for this annual event in a single location. Listening to the voices of the people at other papers during this event can be both disheartening and encouraging. Advertising dollars are down; and, while research from the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Media Engagement shows journalists rate themselves high in credibility, accuracy and trustworthiness, the public has a much lower opinion. “Fake news” has become a common phrase, one that was initially used for the express purpose of distorting facts during the 2016 presidential campaign. It’s now regularly used to denigrate a pillar of our democracy, which concerns us. It’s important for people to understand the importance of our profession to a healthy democracy. Comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable is an expression often used to describe the role of the newspaper. We aim to hold people in power accountable and report on government operations, so citizens become better informed voters. We take this role very seriously. A good chunk of our staff lives within our coverage areas along Long Island’s North Shore. We carefully report on the community because we are a part of that community. We wish to see it thrive because we ourselves care about what should happen to our neighbors and the place in which we all live. What does that mean for you, the person holding the paper? Generation X can learn from actor’s death Amid all of the idiocy of present-day politics and celebrity scandals, we have all too often been remiss in our ability to feel the loss of those who contributed positively to society. On March 4, at the age of 52, Luke Perry passed away after suffering a massive stroke. His loss may not have affected many members of this community, but for those of us who are members of Generation X, it is truly sad. Sad, not only because a good man, a family man who never wreaked havoc on Hollywood and actually had some acting chops has died, but also because it is a reminder that Gen X is slowly slipping away without the slightest recognition. Perry played an iconic character on a cheesy show, “Beverly Hills, 90210,” throughout the 1990s, a show that my

generation related to because it was truly the first of its kind. Daily life was depicted a little more realistically then the modest shows previously aimed at this stage of development and a lot more demurely than present-day television. With Perry’s untimely passing Generation X has been forced to recognize our own mortality. It has also been revealed that Gen X has almost become irrelevant. Those born in the years that encompass this generation — mid-1960s to early 1980s — are stuck in the middle. We have to work twice as hard for half as much, jobs are not intended for the skills we have acquired, and we are suffering medical maladies that were only assumed to afflict those in their golden years. Baby boomers may not be reaping all that they

deserve in retirement, millennials live in fear of opiates and school shootings, and all the while Generation X is quietly dissipating with little cognizance of what is being lost. Perhaps this is a lot to glean from the death of one actor, but it is important to recognize the contributions of an entire generation while we are still here. Baby boomers built this country and millennials are the future, but we are the backbone and, sadly, the good die young. So my fellow Xers, get your checkups, don’t ignore symptoms, have fun with your kids, try to relieve stress, and every once in a while remind everyone that we are still here. Agenda to overthrow Trump is backfiring Hillary Clinton, James Comey, Loretta Lynch and Christopher Steele should all be arrested and charged with conspiracy and collusion to overthrow the presidency of Donald J. Trump (R). Trump has been under fire since election night for having the unmitigated gall to overturn the Bush-Clinton-Obama dynasty, as there was no contingency plan in place for such a scenario. While the godless/progressive/Stalinist gang has seemingly had their way for the past 10 years, aided by the Democratic National Committee-controlled media, their time is about to end. Seth Myers/Jimmy Kimmel hatefest will no longer seem so relevant. If Presidents Ronald Reagan (R) or even John F. Kennedy (D) could see today’s political state of affairs, they would be stupefied. Journalism is a profession on the ropes: with Don Lemon, Anderson Cooper, Chuck Todd, Wolf Blitzer and Rachel Maddow on a 24/7 mission to destroy my president, I see only now how Sen. Joe McCarthy (R) was, if nothing else, a sage and soothsayer 60 years too early. The United States is nearly 250 years old. At every turn, every crisis, God has been there to validate our righteous

Accidents bring out the best and worst in us Our community is very fortunate to have good neighbors. Unfortunately, we also have at least one person who has lost his moral compass. Case in point: My wife and I went shopping at the Setauket Stop & Shop. Our auto was neatly parked in one of the

outlined parking spaces. Upon return to our car, significant damage was noted. A very nice lady saw a man driving away in his pickup truck after striking our auto, clearly a hit-and-run event. She was not able to see the license plate number. I called 911, and a patrol car arrived promptly. The officer

was courteous and professional. The lady also photographed the damage to our auto and forwarded the photos to us. Many thanks. This incident has not diminished our faith in humanity. It has enhanced it. Anton and Denise Richter Stony Brook

Competitive people get stuck in an elevator

our people get into an elevator together. They kind of recognize each other, but they’re not sure so they smile politely and nod. They’re all going to the 7th ﬂoor. On the way up, the elevator gets stuck. Mr. B, the baseball coach, looks at his watch and shakes his head. Ms. S, the soccer coach, paces back and forth, as if she’s blocking a goal. D. None Mrs. V, the violin teacher, closes of the above her eyes, taps her BY DANIEL DUNAIEF feet and imagines the rhythm of a Mozart concerto. Mrs. Jones tries to text her three children, but the elevator doesn’t get any

cell service. “This shouldn’t take too long,” Mr. B offers hopefully. “I’ve been stuck in elevators, had rain delays and all kinds of problems in the past. We’ll be ﬁne.” “Oh, hey Mr. B,” Mrs. Jones says, her voice shaking a bit. “It’s me, Joan Smith. I’m John’s mom.” “Right, right, I knew you looked familiar,” Mr. B says. “Did John have a chance to go hit in the cages like I told him to?” “No, well, he had a violin lesson, so he couldn’t,” Mrs. Jones replies. “But I know he wants to and he’ll get to the cage this weekend.” “This weekend?” Mr. B sighs. “By then the big game will be over.” “So, you’re the reason John couldn’t concentrate during his lesson,” Mrs. V says, as her foot stops and she swivels to face Mr. B. “Excuse me?” Mr. B says, crossing his arms over his chest. “John has been slumping recently and we need him to start hitting again. He has

tremendous potential and we’d like to see how far that will take him.” “Wait, John Jones?” Ms. S asks, turning to the group. “John is a fantastic goalie and we need him for our club game this weekend.” “I thought soccer was a fall sport,” Mr. B sighs. “Right, and baseball is a spring sport and yet during our busiest season, John seems to sneak away for extra hitting and throwing,” Ms. S says. “Well, he needs to practice all year round. What’s he going to do with soccer?” Mr. B adds. “You’re kidding, right? You think he’s going to play baseball in college?” Ms. S asks. “Does anyone have any idea how talented he is on the violin? Have you ever heard him play? He is way ahead of his peers on the violin and could easily play at a much higher level,” Mrs. V says. “He never talks about the violin with me,” Mr. B says, unfolding and refolding his arms. “Would you be interested in hearing about it? Do you think he’s ﬁgured out that you might not

be a receptive audience?” Mrs. V adds. “Now, come on, think about this: John gets to play soccer, baseball and the violin,” Mrs. Jones says. “He gets to beneﬁt from all of your expertise and he’s passionate about all these activities. You’re all giving him experiences he’ll never forget and he’s fortunate to have these opportunities. That’s a good thing, right?” “Yes, I suppose,” Ms. S huffs. “But if he really wants to be great at anything, he needs to commit to it year round.” “I could say the same thing about baseball,” Mr. B says. The elevator suddenly starts to move again. “Yes, but he has committed to all of your activities throughout the year,” Mrs. Jones sighs. “I know, because I’m driving him and his sisters everywhere. Please understand that he does the best he can to pick and choose during overlapping events. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to shop for a present to celebrate his 10th birthday.”

Three cheers for three celebrations

his is a week of celebrations, and it gives me great pleasure to share them with you, our readers. First is the delightful news that Times Beacon Record newspapers won 12 awards for outstanding work over the past year from the New York Press Association this past weekend. The convention was in Albany, and we loved hearing our names called out before a group of more than 300 attendees from weeklies and dailies, paid papers and free, representing communities Between throughout New you and me York state. good editorial coverage and attractive advertising. Those are our two masters, and we need to serve both well in order to survive. Speaking of surviving, a major part of the convention and its workshops was concerned with just that. As most of you know, newspapers — and the media across the board — are engaged in a gigantic struggle. Small businesses, long the backbone of community newspapers like ours, are falling by the wayside. Consumers are buying from Amazon and Google. It’s so easy to toddle over to a computer in one’s pajamas and order up Aunt Tillie’s birthday present, have it wrapped and delivered in no time at all, and perhaps even save some money in the transaction. Only small stores with highly specialized product for sale can compete. Or else they offer some sort of fun experience in their shops, making a personal visit necessary. And it’s not only small stores that are disappearing. Stores like Lord & Taylor — “a fortress on Fifth Avenue,” according to The New York Times — are also gone, directly impacting publications like that esteemed paper. But that is only one existential threat to media.

The other is the drumbeat of fake news. The internet and social media have been signiﬁcantly discredited as news sources. Cable television hasn’t done much better in the public’s regard. Print, which has always been considered the most reliable source of fact-based news, mainly because it takes longer to reach the readers and is vetted by editors and proofers, can be dismissed with a wave of the hand and the accusation, “Fake news!” On the other hand, polls show that print is still the most trusted source. And that is particularly true for hometown newspapers, where reporters and editors live among those they write about and have to answer to them in the supermarket and at school concerts. Which brings me to my next cause for celebration. Monday, April 8, marked the 43rd anniversary of the founding of The Village Times, which began the Times Beacon Record expansion. We were there in 1976, we are here in 2019, and I believe a good measure of success is simply survival. We are still just as committed to the high ideals of a free press — carrying those ideals and passion to our website and any

We will remain so in the future with the support of the communities we serve. There is one other happy occasion this week. My oldest grandchild, Benji, is celebrating his birthday. When Benji was born, 24 years ago, I became a grandmother. This is, as we know, a club one cannot join on one’s own. One needs a grandchild to be admitted to this lovely existence. And in addition to the joy of watching him grow up into an honorable and talented young man, I have the exceptional pleasure of working with him as he goes about his chosen career of making quality films. It was he who directed and helped write our historical movie, “One Life to Give,” and now its sequel, “Traitor.” It is he who will be the first of our family’s next generation to graduate from college next month. I am writing this column on the eve of your birthday, Benji. Happy Birthday, Dear Grandson! And I salute your parents for letting you follow your heart.
