Mt. Sinai mother continues to provide hope in son’s name By Kevin Redding On what would have been Anthony Michael Forte’s 25th birthday Oct. 8, Debbie Carpinone stood over a cake decorated with a photo of her son and icing that spelled out “Happy Birthday In Heaven Anthony There’s A Light That Will Never Go Out” and led family and friends in singing to him before taking a brief moment to reflect and pray to herself. All were gathered at VFW Post 6249 in Rocky Point to honor and celebrate her son’s memory with live music, catered treats, a Chinese auction and raffle prizes for the 2nd annual Anthony’s Angels fundraiser.

For Carpinone — who lost Forte to a heroin overdose on May 2, 2015 — getting through this particular day without him is still a new challenge, but one that’s led her down a path of keeping active, doing good things for others and providing hope and charity to her community. Last year, in the wake of Anthony’s death, she set up Anthony’s Angels to help raise money for Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson, various treatment programs, as well as establish a scholarship in his name at Mount Sinai High School, which is geared toward someone who has overcome a personal obstacle. Carpinone, who works as a teaching assistant for the Mount Sinai Elementary School, was able to give $1,000 to Matthew Kirby this past June and help him pay for college in Rhode Island. “Anthony always wanted to go to school, but due to his addiction, he never got the chance to go,” Carpinone said. “He just was always in and out of rehabs, and sober houses.” Now, she continues to keep herself busy in different ways, by striving to do something good in his memory, like the scholarship. “Matthew [Kirby] was pretty much one of the only kids who really wrote from the heart, about losing his grandparents, and he has suffered a lot of loss as far as family members ... and I felt connected to his family just by reading his essay,” she said. “I’m glad I went with my gut and chose him, because he’s just a wonderful kid.” She wanted this year’s fundraiser to benefit the next scholarship and hopes that she’ll be able to give it out to two students in 2017.

Above, local band Remedy plays old hits like ‘Fame’ by david Bowie during the second annual Anthony’s Angels fundraiser. Left, debbie Carpinone and her son Anthony Forte. Because the event happened to fall on his birthday this year, she also wanted to throw a party he would’ve appreciated. “He loved all the old Hollywood legends,” said Carpinone, who filled the room with huge cutout standees of Elvis Presley and Audrey Hepburn, and stocked the tables with photos of icons like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. She said that caterer Crazy Crepe Café even provided an Elvisthemed peanut butter and banana crepe. “Everybody just came together, and it’s so nice to know that there’s still good people out

there, and people that still want to do good things,” the mother said. Long tables were covered with over 100 prizes from local businesses and attendees, including a $25 gift card to Setauket Pastaria, a glam girl Marilyn basket, a Mercedes Benz donation and a kid’s pedal car. As local band Remedy played high-energy covers of David Bowie, The Knack and Weezer, pictures of Forte in what appeared to be his happiest days adorned the tables and walls, and had many reminiscing about him.

Because of this, the Heritage Trust Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has an urgent appeal to close the gap in its budget. Currently, the budget shortfall is $25,000, and Heritage Trust is in need of help to be able to continue to maintain the Heritage Park and Heritage Center, and offer its community events and programs. Mount Sinai civic celebrates 100 years of service By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tBrnewspapers.com The Mount Sinai Civic Association isn’t just a local organization — it’s an institution that has become part of the community’s fabric for the last 100 years. On Oct. 6 at Willow Creek Golf & Country Club, the civic association celebrated its anniversary with its board, community members and local politicians. “It’s an amazing milestone,” Mount Sinai Civic Association President Ann Becker said. “We’re impressed with how dedicated people have been, always stepping up in Mount Sinai. It’s been a concerted effort. We’ve had strong leadership. It’s a community that pulls together when there are problems and tries to resolve those issues.” Incorporated Oct. 5, 1916, as an outgrowth of the Mount Sinai Taxpayers Association, its initial objective was to construct better roads, improve the conditions of Mount Sinai Harbor and adopt means to protect against fires. “Over 100 years, some of those principles remain,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said. “The civic works hard to protect this community, to ensure that the zoning, the look of this community stays as a majority of the people in this community wants it to. They work hard to protect the harbor, the environment, and they do a tremendous job.”

Over its history, the civic association has During the 1960s and ’70s, the major worked tirelessly on quality of life issues for civic issues included working to successfully the residents of Mount Sinai and Brookhaven stop the dredging of Mount Sinai Harbor, Town. In the 1990s, the civic started many of the community activities still supported through the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Heritage Trust Inc., though many have since expanded. Honored at the anniversary ceremony were Lori Baldassare, Fred Drewes and Deirdre Dubato, who were and are all still involved in Heritage Trust and Heritage Park. Baldassare, eight-year president of the Heritage Trust, is a founding director who has also been a civic member for decades. “I do not think that anyone thinks that they are signing on for 20 years or more, it just happens one small project at a time,” she

said. “Change never ends, nor does the desire to keep the place you call home special. I think the small things are the real success — planting trees along 25A, placing welcome signs, constructing an ambulance building to serve the community, start a Christmas Tree lighting event, influencing the aesthetics and naming for the Heritage Diner, and so much more. There is always just one more thing to do and I am so proud to live in a place that has a real sense of community.” For Drewes, who landscaped Heritage Park, which Baldassare referred to as a community treasure, the evening turned out different than he’d envisioned. “I thought the evening would focus on recognizing and celebrating 100 years of community work of the Mount Sinai Civic Association,” he said. “I felt thankful and honored to be recognized as part of the history of the civic association’s efforts to develop into a hamlet we could be proud to live in.” Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (DMount Sinai) said the hamlet needs to keep up the good work, making sure that the residents protect each other and address the worries and concerns of the community. “We have to keep up the inspiration,” she said. “There’s so much more that we can do, but what’s most important it that we take care of what we have.”

Governor approves standards for lead levels in schools By ReBecca anzel Drinking water in public schools across the state will soon conclude testing for lead contamination. Legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in September makes New York the first state to mandate such testing. The law established a level of lead allowed in drinking water, initial and future testing requirements for schools and deadlines for notifying parents and staff of results. “These rigorous new protections for New York’s children include the toughest lead contamination testing standards in the nation and provide clear guidance to schools on when and how they should test their water,” Cuomo said in a press release. Schools are more likely to have raised lead levels because intermittent use of water causes extended water contact with plumbing fixtures. Those installed before 1986, when federal laws were passed to restrict the amount of lead allowed in materials, might have a higher amount of lead. “We know how harmful lead can be to the health and well-being of young children, and that’s why the Senate insisted on testing school water for lead,” state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said in a statement. “As a result, New York becomes the first state in the nation to perform this testing and protect millions of its students from potential health risks.”

Lead consumption by children is especially harmful because behavioral and physical effects, such as brain damage and reduced IQ, happen at lower levels of exposure, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Even low levels of lead exposure can cause hearing loss, nervous system damage and learning disabilities. In adults, lead can cause damage to the reproductive system, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The new law required schools teaching children in prekindergarten through fifth grade to test drinking water by Sept. 30 and schools with children from grades six through 12 to complete testing by the end of October. This affects in excess of 700 school districts and 37 BOCES locations in the state, consisting of more than 5,000 school buildings, according to the state. Private — Andrew Cuomo schools are exempt from this testing. Any lead level exceeding 15 micrograms per liter must be reported by the school to the local health department within one business day. Schools are also mandated to share the test results with parents and staff in writing and to publish a list of lead-free buildings on their websites. Glenn Neuschwender, president of Enviroscience Consultants, a Ronkonkomabased environmental consulting firm, said to a certain extent, these deadlines are a challenge, especially those pertaining to

Kiddie Academy awarded for its practices, service

Christina St. Nicholas with Kiddie Academy students

Kiddie Academy of Wading River was recognized “the best of the best” in its franchise system at an award ceremony in Scottsdale, Arizona. Christina St. Nicholas, who has served Kiddie Academy for over 14 years, was named First Runner-up as the Director of the Year. In her recommendation letter, a parent wrote: “One of the reasons my children’s experiences have been so wonderful at Kiddie Academy of Wading River is because all of the hard work Christina puts in to make sure that every child is loved, cared for, and enjoying themselves each day,” she wrote. “Christina is one of the most loving, empathetic people I know. I can always count on her to be there for me when I need advice about my son’s progress. She is more than a director, she is a friend.” The parent’s experience is echoed by many. They often express how prepared their children are for kindergarten, by not

only focusing on solid academics but creating a school where character development is important. “Christina brings a wealth of professional experience to our school” said Michele Boccia, owner of Kiddie Academy. “She treats each child as her own, and gives this same attentiveness to teachers.” Her ability to foster a cohesive team is reflected in high staff retention and satisfaction and the school’s 98 percent parent approval.” Kiddie Academy was also recognized for superior customer service and best practices in childcare and education. “Since there are over 155 Kiddie Academy locations nationwide, it was an honor to recognize Ms. St. Nicholas and to receive these two awards,” Boccia said. For more information about Kiddie Academy and its “Life Essentials” curriculum approach, contact Boccia at 631-929-4800 or Michele.boccia@kiddieacademy.net.

Troop visits Hawkins Cemetery: Mount Sinai Troop 1776 joined other

local Boy Scout Troops in a 21-mile hike from Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai to the Manor of St. George in Mastic. The hike commemorates the historic raid led by Major Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington’s chief spy on Nov. 21, 1780. Major Tallmadge landed at what is today known as Cedar Beach and marched to Mastic where Loyalists built a fort. Major Tallmadge and his men captured and destroyed the fort as well as a British ship in nearby waters. They also set fire to a storage area containing 300 tons of hay used by the British to feed their Calvary horses. The Scouts paid respects at a Colonial cemetery in Yaphank where they discovered the grave of a soldier in the Continental Army who was a POW held by the British.

obituary

Remembering Miller Place’s Honor Gracey Kopcienski by ElizabEth KopciEnsKi schwartz Honor Gracey Kopcienski bestowed grace and kindness on every person she met throughout her 84 years. She left this world Sept. 17 at her Mount Sinai home with lifelong partner, Johnny (Alfred) Kopcienski by her side. Honor was born July 2, 1932, to Ruth Jaynes Gracey, a much-loved Port Jefferson high school teacher, and Stuart Gracey, an internationally acclaimed singer and conductor. Honor and her sisters, Louise Hawley and Anne Hedstrom, attended the one-room schoolhouse on North Country Road in Mount Sinai. She and her childhood friend, Jane Carter, often reminisced about their wonderful early years freely roaming the woods and beaches of Miller Place. Later, at Port Jefferson High School, Honor met Johnny. Their courting included a contest where they kissed all the way from Patchogue to Port Jefferson in the rumble seat of a Ford Model A. One particular Friday, after high school graduation and a semester at Mannes School of Music in New York, Honor went to Tinker National Bank and withdrew $89 from Johnny’s bank account. She had him drive her to Rose Jewelers in Patchogue where she informed him that he was buying her an engagement ring. They were wed May 25, 1952, and their love produced eight children, 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The values that defined Honor as a person are seen in her family: compassion, integrity and a love of music. Honor’s devotion to music began early. At 12, she accompanied her father and his choruses. Early on she studied piano at a studio in the Old Field lighthouse. Later she participated in the Juilliard preparatory program. She was an accomplished pianist, organist and ac-

companist. Her passion led her to Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson where she and Johnny were wed, and where she served as parish organist for more than 50 years. Parishioners would often stand in the pews, marveling at her playing until the final note. Honor’s gift was an integral part of hundreds of weddings, funerals and masses. She and her musical partner and dear friend, Dolores Butera, were honored by The Port Times on behalf of Infant Jesus Choir as People of the Year for the Arts in 1991. Honor taught and accompanied numerous children and performers, her own children and grandchildren included. She played for Manhasset Glee Club, Port Jefferson Choral Society, Southold Town Choral Society, Choral Society of Moriches, SUNY Stony Brook, and at master classes given by opera singer Eleanor Steber in her Belle Terre home. Later she was accompanist and mentor for the New Century Singers. Honor always maintained her own musical studies and in 2000 studied and passed the rigorous test to attain the prestigious Associateship of the American Guild of Organists. Instead of retiring, Honor continued to play the organ at many local churches including Mount Sinai Congregational, Setauket’s Presbyterian with director Mark Orton, Port Jefferson’s First United Methodist and, most recently, St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church in Sound Beach. While busy raising children along with her musical career, Honor was also active in community service. She was instrumental in organizing Polish Fest at Infant Jesus Church, cooking kielbasa sausage side by side with Johnny; was active in supporting Port Jefferson Rotary charitable efforts including the Gift of Life; and was a contributing member of the Miller

PeoPle Creating comfort for the community To help earn their Bronze Award, Rocky Point Middle School sixth-graders and Girl Scout Troop 2289 members Samantha Amalfitano, Lilyanna Astarita, Felicity Monaghan and Rachel Versheck crafted a student bench for their school building. Using nearly $200 that they raised by collecting and exchanging recyclable bottles, the students worked throughout the summer to complete the project. The Girl Scouts worked collaboratively as they learned how to use power tools, sand, stain and vanish to construct the wooden bench. The piece, and several decorative flowerpots, were placed outside the cafeteria at the end of September. The students hope that the completed project will provide their peers — especially those on medical restrictions — with a comfortable place to sit outside during lunchtimes and inspire others to give back to the community.

honor Gravey Kopcienski Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society. When the new Infant Jesus Parish Center was built, Honor and Johnny donated a piano so that there would be music for all events there. They supported funding for a new piano for Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Honor and Johnny’s years of giving to the people and spirit of Infant Jesus Parish were recognized by the Diocese of Rockville Centre with the St. Agnes Medal of Service award. The couple were early advocates and strong supporters of Father Frank Pizzarelli in his efforts to minister to troubled youth in the community. The mission of Hope House Ministries matched Honor’s passion for personal, ongoing and daily commitment to the spirit of giving. Honor and Johnny’s greatest gifts, and source of greatest pride, are their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild: Charlaine and Ira, Emma (Sean) and Abbie; Beth and Joseph, Kate (Dan), Caralyn (Johnny) and David; Mark and Rebecca, Andrew, Julia, Christian and Lauren; Therese and Clark,

John (Shannon and baby Clark), Christen (Ryan), Mary Liz (Adam) and Luke; Ann Marie and Chip, Sergei and Daniel; John Paul and Martha, Jake and Mary Claire; Jennie and Peter, Gracey (Jamie), Peter and Annie; Matthew and Becky, Gregory, Benjamin, Margaret and Sam. Their 24 grandchildren include five addressed as doctor, an Olympian, teachers, musicians, business people and enthusiastic students. Honor was proud of the legacy of hard work, service and compassion she instilled in her family. She will always be remembered by both her name and key trait: Honor. Honor’s final days were blessed to end in peace, comfort and love through the assistance of the staff at Good Shepherd Hospice. Her family prefers that memorial donations be sent to Good Shepherd Hospice or the giver’s local hospice organization. Arrangements were entrusted to Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Elizabeth Kopcienski Schwartz is the daughter of Honor Gracey Kopcienski.

Eagles spoil Harborfields’ homecoming celebration By Bill landon Rocky Point rocked the house. The football team’s junior linebacker Alec Rinaldi helped spoil Harborfields’ homecoming when he knocked down a late fourth-quarter pass on fourth and long to give the Eagles a 20-14 win. “Not for a minute did we think we were going to lose,” junior running back Petey LaSalla said. “Our defense really stepped up big today. We had a really good back field and we were able to shut them down, which forced them to throw the ball.” LaSalla helped his team strike first, when he punched into the end zone following a 22yard run three minutes into the game. With senior quarterback Sean McGovern’s extrapoint kick good, the Eagles were out front 7-0. McGovern shared the quarterback duties with junior Damian Rivera all afternoon.

Rocky Point 20 Harborfields 14

The Eagles struggled with their running game, and neither team scored in the second, as Rocky Point squandered a field goal attempt in the seconds before halftime. Again, it was LaSalla who got the call to start off the scoring for the second half. Early in the third, the junior broke several tackles, bounced outside and went the distance on a 32-yard run. McGovern’s foot put his team out front, 14-0. “Rocky Point came out more physical than us in the beginning and that took away our [speed] and our running game, which forced us to pass, which is fine with us,” Harborfields head coach Rocco Colucci said. “These kids got a lot of heart; they fight to the bitter end no matter what the score is, no matter who we’re playing — they always believe they have a chance to win.” After a sustained drive, Harborfields finally got on the scoreboard when senior running back Mark Malico ran off left tackle and took the ball 1 yard for six points. Harborfields senior kicker Thomas Beslity added another to make it a one-score game to trail 14-7. “They’re always a tough team — we’ve had trouble with them in the past — obviously we had some trouble with them today,” Malico said of Rocky Point. “We turned it on [late] and we found our niche with our passing game, with some nice catches on the sideline.” On the ensuing kickoff, McGovern fielded the ball on his own 6-yard line, and sprinted up the left side, crossing midfield and jetting down the right sideline for a 94-yard kickoff return to stretch the Eagles lead to 20-7, with the extra-point attempt failing. “We just had to stay consistent — every man has got to do their job and [not] overdo it,” McGovern said. “We battled through everything today, between the turnovers and them coming back in the last two minutes, so

we stayed calm and worked together.” Harborfields switched to its passing attack with seven minutes remaining. Clementi worked the routes and the sideline, and connected with senior wide receiver Andrew Loiacono for a 70-yard catch and run to set up the Tornadoes’ next score. Clementi threw a screen pass to sophomore running back Thomas Sangiovanni, and he turned the corner and jetted down the sideline for the touchdown. Beslity split the uprights to close the gap, 20-14. “We analyzed our defense,” Sangiovanni said. “We had to execute the plays perfectly, we had to change a couple of things up and it worked out. [Rocky Point] just played harder than us in the end.” Harborfields’ defense took a stand and a

clock-eating drive forced the Eagles to punt with three minutes left. Rocky Point head coach Anthony DiLorenzo said he wasn’t surprised that the game was decided in the final seconds. “We knew this was going to be a four-quarter football game,” he said. “They’ve put it on film every week. We’ve done [that in only] two games so far, so our message all week was that this was going to be a four-quarter game.” Clementi went to the air, picking apart the Eagles’ secondary, moving the chains downfield as he marched his team to Rocky Point’s 30-yard line with 1:37 left in the game. On fourth down with 38 seconds, Clementi threw a strike to Buda crossing over the middle, but Rinaldi knocked down the pass to seal the win.

Anthony’s Angels Continued from page A3 “He was a very special person,” said Dolores Franklin, Forte’s aunt. “He was very charismatic, talented. I can’t say enough. He loved to act, liked to do skits ... he brought us a lot of laughter. And no matter how awful you looked, he’d always tell you you were beautiful. He made you feel good.” She said that there was certainly a big hole in the family’s hearts, having lost such a huge presence. “I just wish that one of us could’ve gotten through to him, and could’ve let him know how special he really was,” she said, “because I don’t think he knew how great he was.” Carpinone wants to get rid of the stigma around heroin and those who get hooked on it, because her son didn’t look like a drug addict, didn’t come from a terrible family and wasn’t a bad person. As overdoses become more and more common across Long Island, it’s become very clear that drugs don’t know who you are, and addiction can latch itself onto anybody — a fact that more and more people are becoming aware of. “Debbie’s son’s death was my first eye-opening experience to heroin,” said Kelly Amantea, Carpinone’s friend. “It never touched my life, my family, or my heart prior to that. It just never affected me. I knew nothing about it. I lived in my own little drug-free bubble.” She said for her, a lot of awareness came out of the tragic event. “I do find that the community as a whole is starting to wrap its arms around this,” she said. “I’m hoping that there’s more attention paid to this because it’s affecting more and more families — more and more lives — and I

want the cure and the remedy to catch up with the epidemic ... they’re so far apart right now.” Amantea added she’d never been to a funeral like Forte’s before and believes every middle school kid should be dragged to a funeral of someone who died this way, to open children’s eyes to the harsh reality. “It rocked me to my core and I don’t think these kids really understand what it’s like for the families that have to carry this,” she said. “That drug is Russian roulette. Debbie is channeling her grief in such a positive way, and I just find everything she’s doing to be so good for her body, mind and soul. Her situation touched my heart.” The fundraiser raised $220 for Hope House Ministries and $1,500 for the scholarship.

Brookhaven town supervisor ed romaine wants to maintain the town’s AAA credit rating, and the 2017 tentative operating budget reflects that. One area that saw an increase in funds for 2017 was snow removal, which now stands at just under $6 million. “If we do have a year of little snow, we hope to be able to move some of that budget over to highway maintenance [budget] lines to increase the spending there if we don’t need the snow budget,” Wright said.

The town was able save money by eliminating 13 full-time positions, which were left vacant primarily by retirements and resignations during the course of the year, according to Wright. The town board will hold a public hearing and vote to approve the tentative 2017 budget Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

OPINION Editorial

A political cartoon depicting the second presidential debate this past Sunday.

Graphic by Mike Sheinkopf

Letters to the editor

Can you explain your Trump vote to your kids? File photo

Donald Trump has received a lot of backlash for private comments he made in 2005 regarding his boastful treatment of women.

The right to be offended As an editorial staff, we have an opinion. … The first half of that sentence isn’t necessary in order to reveal what we think. And that is the exact problem we have had with this past weekend’s news cycle. Political leader after political leader came out this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday to condemn Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s leaked comments, bragging about being able to commit sexual assault against women. One of the common themes from legislators who pulled their endorsements was “As a father of daughters” or “As a brother with sisters — or a mother,” they were offended. Two problems here: You don’t need to be a “someone” in order to be offended, you can simply be offended. And why is it that women are repeatedly being referred to as a sister, a daughter or a mother? A presidential candidate talked about how he can sexually assault women because he is a star. A woman doesn’t need to be anything to be offended, threatened or violated by that sentiment. A man is also not disqualified from finding Trump’s comments reprehensible simply because he is a man. Women don’t need to give birth or have a brother before they can be victimized by Trump’s words. Men don’t need to be married to condemn sexual assault. It should not matter your role, your background or your stature — no one should need to back up or justify why they are against sexual assault. They just should be.

Letters …

Pretty sure — both sides can agree that Trump’s son isn’t the only 10-year-old computer wiz. Presuming — we are also in agreement that nobody is shocked any more as to what our children have access to on the internet. Whether you have or have not discussed politics with your children, even leaving out “ the gory parts,” they have found all they need to see and hear online about the candidates. Which leads me to wonder … what are the reasons parents are giving their children as to why they are voting for Trump? Take away all the political mumbo-jumbo that children, and some teens, may not comprehend, and you are left with the news that children are really interested in: the shock and awe, the yelling, the threatening, the making fun of, the what-is-hegoing-to do next? The promise of

a dramatic change. The macho, Rambo rhetoric. Children see and hear him, weekly, calling women pigs and rating them on a scale of 1 to 10; calling minorities rapists and terrorists; demeaning other minorities by stating that they live in “hell holes” and keep “shooting each other.” They hear Trump putting the almighty fear into Trump believers — and then your children witness the believers at their rallies, spewing their nonsense. So I am wondering a few things. When your daughter’s boyfriend calls her a pig or claims she’s not a 10 because her breasts aren’t big enough — does your parental vote for Trump say that’s acceptable behavior? Your daughter may think it does. She knows you heard Trump say it, and you support him. When your son gets hit with a lawsuit due to not paying his fair share of taxes or for sexual miscon-

duct — does your parental vote for Trump make that “part of business?” Your son may think it does. He knows Trump got away with both, and you support Trump. When your child bullies a person of a different religion they aren’t comfortable with, or with disabilities — does your parental Trump vote make that okay too? They will think so; they saw your candidate do it and say it. Again, with your support. When your daughter’s boss states that she will never make as much money as your son, does your parental Trump vote tell her to just live with it? She may think so, because Trump thinks so, and you support him. One more question: Is this really the “dramatic change” you want for your children?

Independence party picking Zeldin should raise questions In case you have not seen, the Independence Party — one of the few political third parties that has any significance — has given Congressman Lee Zeldin its ballot line, and thus their support. If that means nothing to you, consider this: Zeldin’s opponent, Anna Throne-Holst, used to be a member of the Independence Party. Adding insult to injury is the fact that the Independence Party

had previously endorsed Dave Calone, who ran against ThroneHolst in the Democratic Primary. So essentially, the Independence Party, who had previously endorsed a Democrat, would rather go to the other side of the aisle and endorse a Republican than support a candidate who used to be a member of their own party. I fail to see a greater condem-

nation of Throne-Holst’s work as an elected official than the party she had been a member of for years giving her opponent their ballot line; it really calls into question her competence. If Throne-Holst’s own party has no confidence in her, why would the average voter?

OpiniOn Turning to past presidents for words of wisdom

W

here can we turn when the dialogue from, or about, our presidents seems to fall short? Fortunately, we can look to the imperfect presidents of the past, whose ideas and inspiration have, for years, proved much more than “just words,” and whose notions about who — and what — we can or should be has helped provide a compass for the country. James Garfield might be a good place to start: “We can not overestimate the fervent love of By Daniel Dunaief liberty, the intelligent courage and the sum of common sense with which our fathers made the great experiment of selfgovernment.”

D. None of the above

Garfield also proferred, “If wrinkles must be written on our brow, let them not be written on our heart. The spirit should never grow old.” Thomas Jefferson suggested a way to deal with growing personal frustration: “When angry, count 10, before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.” How about a few words from Rutherford B. Hayes who said, “He serves his party best who serves the country best.” Martin Van Buren advised, “It’s easier to do a job right, than to explain why you didn’t.” How about a quote from Honest Abe? “My dream,” Lincoln said, “is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last, best hope on Earth.” Or this one: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Here’s another Lincoln quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Turning to the other side of the Civil

War conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, said, “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” John Quincy Adams’ inspirational suggestion was, “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.” Chester A. Arthur said, “Men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken.” Harry S. Truman indicated, “No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.” Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking … is freedom.” Describing a country whose ancestors came from so many other nations, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us,

and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” FDR’s cousin Theodore Roosevelt said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Teddy also suggested, “Courtesy is as much a mark of a gentleman as courage.” John F. Kennedy, who saw his fair share of crises during a presidency cut short, said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity.” John Tyler offered these amusing and humbling words: “Here lies the body of my good horse, The General. For 20 years he bore me around the circuit of my practice, and in all that time he never made a blunder. Would that his master could say the same.” William Howard Taft pointedly said, “Politics, when I am in it, makes me sick.” An Eisenhower quote might be a fitting way to end: “America is best described by one word, freedom.”

Britain’s Baroness Jay brings warning of threat to democracy

A

baroness and former leader of the British House of Lords, Margaret Jay, came to Stony Brook University to speak to us about “The new populism in America and Britain: What has happened to our politics?” The talk, which was open to the public and well attended, drew parallels between Trumpism and the Brexit movement in Britain and served as one way to understand our preBy Leah S. Dunaief election frenzy. Populism, as a political ideology, views virtuous citizens as mistreated by small circles of elites to be overthrown. In Britain, where jobs are drying up and wages have been stagnant for those 31-59 years of age for decades, migrants have been pouring into the country — some 330,000 in the last year, looking for jobs and a good life.

Between you and me

Citizens are angry. The landscape has changed and a common cry is, “I don’t recognize the town I grew up in,” as a result of the changes. As a member of the European Union, Britain had open borders for laborers throughout the 28-member countries even as British workers could in turn move anywhere within the EU from Britain. Baroness Jay of Paddington, daughter of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, told us that there are four times as many Brits collecting unemployment insurance in Germany as there are Germans collecting unemployment in Britain. Nonetheless, the “elites” and the politicians are seen by the British middle class as being unresponsive and only self-serving, and there is a deep sense of insecurity in the country. In such an environment, the message, “Support Brexit to take back control,” resonates and sounds not dissimilar to “Make America great again.” These slogans would seem to pit the common people against the top 1 percent. Leaders of populist movements have certain characteristics in common, as the baroness pointed out. They tend to be blunt to the point

of crude. The media loves them for their irresistible sound bites and the attention they draw from the public, and offers them a platform. Interestingly in this comparison of Britain and the United States, those who would speak “for the people” are not actually “of the people.” They feel none of the economic insecurities but seek to identify with the millions of citizens. That is certainly the case with “billionaire” Trump and also the leaders of the Brexit campaign, who are from the upper classes. Populism is spreading in Europe. Will it spread here? That is the question Margaret Jay poses for us. For the United Kingdom, there are other serious issues. Will the four parts of the country stay together? Scotland and Northern Ireland resoundingly voted to stay in the EU, while Wales and England voted to leave. Also there is what the baroness described as an “unpleasant divide” between foreign workers, who are increasingly viewed as taking away jobs, benefits and even lifestyle, and the citizens. The Brexit vote seems to have given legitimacy to the antagonisms. Then there are the matters of

making separate trade agreements with 27 other countries, and the pound sterling exchange rate. Meanwhile what has Brexit done to the rest of the EU? Other countries, with similar movements, are stirring. There is even the thought that the Brexit vote may have caused matters to improve elsewhere, as politicians heed the message sent by the voters. The solution, proposed by Baroness Jay, lies in rebuilding the center. We must not become fortresses of isolation, she warns, either in trade or of xenophobia. Pluralism and diversity are the way of the future, and in the U.S. these ideas are baked into our democracy. To rebuild the center involves a role for education. Tellingly some 75 percent of the more educated in Britain voted to stay in the EU, while about the same number, 75 percent of the less educated, voted to leave. The latter are those for whom the present system is not working. And while this picture of current politics, is specific to Britain at the moment, the dark and unpleasant nature of this past Sunday’s presidential debate here would urge us to pay further attention to the people whose needs are not being met.
