The cherry blossom trees on the campus of Stony Brook University were in full bloom on May 1, resembling pink, puffy clouds of cotton candy. The trees were planted at the university to coincide with the annual Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at the Charles B. Wang Center. The event, which usually takes place the first weekend in May, was canceled for the second year in a row.

Two first-timers, two repeats and an incumbent vie for Three Village school board BY ANDREA PALDY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With three board seats up for grabs and only one incumbent in the race, one thing is certain: the Three Village school board will seat at least two first-time trustees this year. The candidates, profiled below in the order they will appear on the ballot, responded to questions by email, including about the district budget, declining enrollment, student programs, community engagement and diversity and inclusion.

David McKinnon

David McKinnon, a professor of neurobiology and behavior at Stony Brook University, is running a second time, after last year. Along with his running mate, first-time candidate Karen Roughley, McKinnon is an advocate for proportional representation on the board. “Last year, independent candidates received over 10,000 votes from the community, 43 percent of the total vote. There were three open positions. No independent candidate won a seat. Forty-three percent of the vote, zero percent of the seats,” he said. The lack of independent representatives —

those not represented by a union —results in “an extraordinarily closed system,” he said. McKinnon wants the district to be more “parent-friendly” and said if he were elected to the board, he would encourage board participation by “opening up the flow of information,” and making decision making more transparent. He would also make himself available to parents after board meetings, “to give feedback on their proposals.” Founder of the Three Village Parents Alliance, he credits his profession with giving him “a good overall perspective on how the school education system works for its students and how demands on the education system have changed over time.”

Revamping the elementary math curriculum is a priority for McKinnon. He suggests an opt-in program, similar to the local enrichment program, School Nova, which uses “specialist” math teachers to introduce basic algebra concepts to students early in their education. The curriculum would make math “seem more natural to more students” and easier to learn computer languages earlier, he said. It also would “significantly improve employment prospects for many students,” McKinnon said. To address declining enrollment, the researcher said the district needs to control costs to make itself more affordable and attractive to young families.

McKinnon supports his running mate’s proposal for more social emotional learning and inclusion and also believes the district should add ethics to the curriculum. McKinnon’s three children have attended district schools. He still has one child in junior high.

Sue Rosenzweig

Sue Rosenzweig, a former news anchor at News 12, said she’s running so she can “continue to advocate for all of the children in our district.” This means doing her part to ensure that taxes are spent “in the most efficient way to deliver CANDIDATES CONTINUED ON A8

SBUH patient returns to Kenya after second stay

BY IRYNA SHKURHAN DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Saline Atieno came to Long Island as a girl in 2012 from Kenya to receive transformative facial surgeries by Stony Brook Medicine doctors. On May 2, she returned home as a 19-year-old young woman with a whole new demeanor after 15 surgical procedures. Atieno developed a facially disfiguring bacterial necrosis called Noma as a child, which often occurs in young severely malnourished children. Dr. Leon Klempner, a retired orthodontist and professor at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, met Saline for the first time in 2010 on an outreach medical trip. “She was beautiful on the inside and through the work of Dr. [Alexander] Dagum and the Stony Brook medical team, they helped match her inside and out,” said Klempner, a Poquott resident. “So, she now has a much stronger self-image.” Through his charity, Smile Rescue Fund for Kids, Klempner brought Saline to the United States in 2012 until 2014, where she received 10 life-changing surgeries to

improve the functions and appearance of her face. Klempner and Dagum, who is chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and their Stony Brook colleagues set a plan to reconstruct her face and mouth to improve her functions and look. The doctors recount meeting a shy girl for the first time in 2013. Saline only attended school a handful of times because she got bullied too much. “She’s blossomed,” Dagum said. “Little by little, she’s gained confidence in maturation and she’s grown into a young woman that we’re all so proud of her.” Following her return to Kenya, Saline developed recurring infections and scarring from the Noma infection and the healing process of the first 10 surgeries. The charity arranged for her to return to Long Island for additional treatment from February 2019 to January 2020. During this period, Dagum performed more reconstructive procedures to reduce the risk of future infections. He also removed a developing cyst from her cheek and scarring around her lips, face and forehead. Saline’s return to Kenya was interrupted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Her

stay with a host family on Long Island was extended indefinitely as travel was banned back to Kenya. During this extra stay, Saline had additional time to heal and recover with medical guidance from her Stony Brook clinical care team. She also took the time to perfect her English skills

and enjoy her adopted home. “It’s almost the equivalent of sending your child to college,” Dagum said. When she returns home, Saline will attend a boarding school and in the future wants to receive training to become a hairstylist. This wouldn’t have been possible without the medical staff volunteering their time and the university volunteering its services. Smile Rescue Fund also has donated to help support her education when she goes back, find clean water and finance solar lights in her area. The pandemic has given Saline added time to heal, adjust and see her future. Now she returns home to Kenya as a young woman. Saline’s host mom, Kerri Tame, of Coram, said that Saline adjusted well and became one of her children in the past two and a half years. Saline was enrolled at Newfield High School in Selden where she made friends and enjoyed attending classes in person. “She became Americanized,” Tame said. “Just like one of our children.” “I’m not going to be able to do the things I do here, back home,” Saline said. When asked what she would miss most about Long Island, she said, “Everything.”

the best possible academic experience for each student,” she said. Rosenzweig has served as president of the board of trustees at Play Groups Preschool, and PTA president at Setauket Elementary School, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, Ward Melville High School and the Three Village Joint Council of PTAs. In these leadership roles, she said she has been called to collaborate, “include and respect all opinions,” manage budgets and “keep the needs of children paramount.” She is confident in the district’s budget and its management of funds that enabled schools to reopen fully last fall, but Rosenzweig did express concern about the impact the pandemic has had on district families. “Jobs have been lost, savings accounts depleted, many people have suffered terribly. We will need to be ready to continue to support students whose families have been negatively affected,” she said. In response to calls for more diversity, equity and inclusion, Rosenzweig, a member of the Gelinas Anti-Racism and Social Justice Task Force, said, “I hear these calls, and I validate them.” She said she is inspired by the community — “especially the students” — which seems ready for change and opportunities to have “difficult conversations about biased behaviors, hurtful language, and marginalizing practices;” a staff that looks more representative of the district’s diverse population; literature that “reflects many realities;” and “textbooks that give a more accurate picture of the world and its history.” Rosenzweig, who is running with Shaorui Li and Deanna Bavlnka with the endorsement of the Three Village Teachers Association, is the mother of two Ward Melville graduates and two children currently in the secondary schools.

projects funded by the Departments of Energy and Defense and NASA and was a Long Island Society chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. She will serve as chair of the 2022 International Nuclear Science Symposium. Li, who has one child in elementary school and another in junior high, said she plans to use her background and professional network to provide opportunities for STEM education, funding and additional resources for student career-building. “It is my passion to expand career-building resources through collaboration with the universities, national laboratories, STEAM museums and studios for our students,” Li said. She also cited the district’s proximity to worldclass institutions as yet another advantage that can help students “to advance their career growth through effective district-led collaborations.” Also important to Li is teacher training. She said she wants to continue to provide teachers with opportunities — such as the training they received in remote teaching during the pandemic — to continue to directly benefit students. Founder and president of the Asian American Association of Greater Stony Brook, Li is also an executive director of the Long Island Chinese American Association, a board member of Fermilab Asian and Pacific Association and a member of the Gelinas anti-racism task force. She commended the district’s “excellent effort to improve diversity and inclusion” and said that the effort, along with a school board with diverse members, would boost the district’s reputation and attract families from diverse backgrounds. Li, who ran for the board last year with McKinnon, said that the “positive and constructive involvement of the whole community” and “transparent communication between the administrators, the board, and district families during the pandemic” have alleviated the misunderstandings and misinformation of the past. She added that she would like to build on this foundation as a board trustee.

Shaorui Li is a principal engineer and research group manager at a national laboratory, as well as an adjunct faculty member at Stony Brook University. She has managed advanced research

Karen Roughley, running mate with McKinnon, said her motivation for running “is to guide the district to become even better in the face of the new challenges and to give parents a truly

independent voice.” Roughley, who was a vice president of business continuity and crisis management in investment banking before adopting her daughters, added that district students with special needs, along with their families, teachers and therapists, also deserve representation to make sure their voices are heard. Like McKinnon, she believes that parents should be represented by board members who have not been endorsed by “special interest groups” and that board meetings should be places where the community can have “real-time discussions on what is being voted on.” She also wants to ensure “an open line of communication between the district, the parents, and the community,” so parents can be part of the decision-making process as they were with the reopening of school in the fall. In addition to advocating for world language instruction in elementary school, Roughley would like to see the expansion of vocational education in the district, with the district offering vocational courses in-house. This could save the district the money it pays BOCES, and it could also bring in revenue if classes are open to neighboring districts, she said. Having served on the executive board at Arrowhead Elementary School, and as current copresident of both the Special Education PTA and Murphy PTO, as well as vice president of the PTA council, Roughley said she’s familiar with district policies and has acted as a liaison between parents and educators. Roughley, a 10-year resident with one child in elementary school and one in junior high, proposes “containing or even decreasing” property taxes to both attract new families and keep current families in the district. Though she has seen educators “doing their best to be inclusive,” Roughley said she believes bullying is a problem in district schools. “Inclusivity and respect for diversity — however it manifests — need to be taught to our students in the classrooms,” she said.

Deanna Bavlnka

Deanna Bavlnka, a corporate director of human resources, is the only incumbent in the race. A board member since 2011, she is district chair of

the Presidential Service Awards and maintains the community Facebook page, Three Village Connection. A Ward Melville graduate herself, she wanted to highlight “sometimes overlooked” district strengths such as the “cutting edge” technology and teacher training that were crucial to this year’s instruction. She added that the district’s Three Village Academy, prekindergarten, special education and intellectually gifted programs, along with student scholarships and the number and diversity of clubs and electives “set Three Village apart from the rest, every school year.” She also wanted to recognize the addition of mental health staff and guidance counselors to grades 6-12 over the years. Even while noting the district’s strengths, Bavlnka said she would like to bring vocational studies to the district through Career & Technical Education and EMT classes to the high school students. “With Stony Brook University Hospital in our backyard, I would like to significantly expand and add to our current health and medical courses,” she said. The mother of two secondary school students said the district has answered calls for attention to diversity and inclusion with the creation of the Anti-Racism and Social Justice Task Force that includes, administrators, teachers, parents and students. She added that the district is looking at culturally responsive programs from the State Education Department and is discussing curriculum and professional development to enhance anti-racism, social justice and inclusion. Bavlnka said that even with declining enrollment, large costs such as health care and retirement “rise expeditiously” every year. A particular point of pride was the district’s full opening in September to all students five days a week, while also offering a remote option. She praised “teachers and staff who showed up every day to provide quality instruction to our students, accommodated our students, and put the students ahead of their fears.” Board elections and the budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 18, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Gelinas and Murphy junior highs and Ward Melville High School.

Letters to the Editor

Education prepares people for the future, helps them achieve their goals and increases their odds of living a life where they not only survive, but thrive. As blues musician B.B. King is famously quoted as saying, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” President Joe Biden (D) gets that concept, and last week he asked Congress to enact legislation that would allow Americans to attend community colleges for free. Under the American Families Plan, $109 billion would be slated to make two years of community college free for all students. There would also be an $85 billion investment for expanding federal Pell Grants, which is awarded to undergraduate students who display financial need and have not earned a degree. This is one important way to help our young people who are unprepared for the workforce after high school. For many, a community college has given them an advantage that they may not have had otherwise. From those whose grades were less than ideal in high school to those whose can’t afford to attend a four-year university or are undecided on what they want to do with their lives, a community college provides a stepping stone that is local and affordable for most. Here at TBR all three of our current editors attended Suffolk County Community College, which in turn paved the way to making obtaining bachelor’s degrees at other institutions more manageable. According to the website joebiden.com, approximately six out of 10 jobs require education beyond a high school diploma. To succeed in a world where the economy is globalized and technology driven, people are going to need more than 12 years of education. The website also goes on to say that one can do a lot with an associate degree. “Today in the United States there are an estimated 30 million quality jobs, with an average salary of $55,000, that don’t require a bachelor’s degree,” according to the site. Free college tuition for community colleges would mean even more young people being able to achieve the American Dream. It can also keep college-aged students in the area, frequenting local stores, which stimulates the local economy. And in the long term, with less student debt to pay, it may increase the odds of people staying on Long Island and settling down. Two years can make a difference and transform a life. Our sincere hope is that Congress will take this proposal from the president seriously. At the same time, we hope a better look is taken at our current public school system in America. Even before the pandemic, American children were not receiving an equal education from state to state as many schools are funded through local taxes. The more affluent an area a person lives in, the better the education tends to be. Also, there is a need for more pre-K classes across the country to provide children a head start in learning, both academically and socially. Most of all, everybody should be required to complete 12th grade and not be able to drop out of school at 16. The education system in the U.S. needs a lot of fine-tuning. Let’s start by providing high school graduates a chance to get the skills they need in today’s competitive world.

With the election date for the Three Village Central School District Board of Education fast approaching on May 18, our community has a unique opportunity to select two independent candidates who are committed to strengthening the lines of communication between our district’s administrators and the teachers and families who comprise our school community. In these already uncertain times, where decisions directly impacting our children often lack transparency and offer little opportunity for public input, Karen’s and David’s candidacies represent a vote for change. Both Karen and David are

long-term residents of our community, with children currently enrolled in our district’s schools. David is an accomplished educator, who is passionate about enhancing our district’s curriculum, providing opportunities for students to explore a wider array of career paths prior to graduation, and partnering with the community. Karen is a tireless advocate for children of all abilities who has demonstrated her commitment to our community through over ten years of service on several school PTAs, the Special Education PTA (SEPTA), and the PTA Council. Karen’s knowledge of our district, coupled with David’s

background as an educator, make them a powerful force for change; I encourage every voter to learn more about their qualifications and goals prior to May 18 at roughleyforboe.com and dmckinnon.org. If elected, I am confident that both Karen and David would bring muchneeded transparency, integrity and a fresh perspective to the Three Village Board of Education. Their desire to put the needs of our students and their families first and their commitment to advocacy make them ideal representatives for our community. Joy Poppers Setauket

Roughley and McKinnon for TVCSD BOE We are writing in support of the candidacies of Karen Roughley and David McKinnon for seats on the Three Village Central School District Board of Education. We have known both Karen and David for many years, and firmly believe that they would both be effective, outspoken additions to the board. David has deep roots in the community, is a career educator at Stony Brook University and has had children within the district for the past 20 plus years. Karen has been volunteering and leading within the school district for many years. She has held varied

leadership and committee positions in the district as part of the PTA. At a most basic level, the school board is charged with oversight of the school district by citizens and parents. The local school board is an institution that the community can ensure runs as a truly democratic entity. David and Karen are running as a team of independent candidates with no support from or favor for special interests. They will look at issues in front of the board and judge them by their merits and effects on all the stakeholders in our school district community: students, tax-payers, parents and teachers.

Both Karen and David are deeply committed to the school community of TVCSD and have already spent countless hours working on projects and challenges within the district. They both have children currently enrolled in the schools and experience student and parent perspectives firsthand. This is a challenging time for the district and we are confident that Karen and David are the thoughtful, informed representatives that we want speaking for us on the TVCSD Board of Education. Steven and Kathryn Puopolo Stony Brook

Transparency and independence important for BOE We’re writing to endorse David McKinnon and Karen Roughley for trustee positions on the Three Village Central School District Board of Education. We first got to know David through our involvement with the Start School Later efforts beginning in 2019. David’s role in that campaign was

motivated by a genuine commitment to the education and well-being of our district’s children. Both David and Karen are running as independent candidates on a platform of greater openness in governance and increased community engagement. We believe our common interest in

educational excellence will be best served by a board that operates in a fully transparent and deliberative way and includes voices that represent all the constituencies in the district. Please vote May 18. John Hover and Erika Newton East Setauket

Editor’s note: The vote to approve the Three Village Central School budget and choose three Board of Education candidates will take place May 18. As printed in the April 29 edition of The Village Times Herald, this week’s edition is the last issue letters supporting candidates can be published. The Village Times Herald only received letters for David McKinnion and Karen Roughley. The opinions of columnists and letter writers are their own. They do not speak for the newspaper.

Opinion The modern reality of a two-handed life

W

e live such a two-handed life these days. On the one hand, we are emerging from our pandemic shells. On the other, we don’t want to race out too quickly, undermining all the work we did to protect ourselves, our families and our school communities. To that end, I had a few topics on the twohanded nature of our lives: The weather On the one hand, it’s a relief that we can D. None enjoy warmer weather. The summer is of the above approaching. The calls BY DANIEL DUNAIEF from seagulls blend with the steady rhythm of water lapping up on the shores, urging the fortunate residents

of Suffolk County to return to the peace and harmony of the water. On the other hand, the temperature will undoubtedly climb into the hazy, hot and humid zone at some point. While the beaches are wonderful, we won’t all have time to stroll on a sandbar during the week. Vaccinations On the one hand, many people are getting vaccinated, increasing the likelihood that we’re taking an immunological stand against a deadly virus. With a greater percentage of the population inoculated, we stand a better chance of coming together, revisiting family and friends we’ve only seen on Zoom for over a year. On the other hand, a subgroup of people are reluctant to take the vaccines, worried about side effects, the speed at which the vaccine was developed, and a host of other concerns. If enough of them don’t get vaccinated and/or if variants evade the vaccine, we may not be able to beat back this virus as quickly as we’d like.

Graduations On the one hand, we are so incredibly proud that our children have made it through whatever stage concludes this year. We appreciate all they have done to get here and to become the incredible people they are. On the other hand, wait, hello? How did the time go by so quickly? Did we prepare them for the real world? What is the real world? What does it mean to graduate into the second year of a pandemic and how can we prepare them for some of the unknowns and unknowables ahead? Politics On the one hand, we can, potentially, talk about politics again without the echoes of personal animus reverberating from an angry White House. In theory, we can even agree to disagree or to consider compromise. On the other hand, has the left become too powerful even as the right engages in party strife? Are calmer waters really around us, or

is it a temporary reprieve until the tempest returns with the elections in 2022 and 2024? Freedom On the one hand, we are freer than we’ve been in over a year, to travel and visit family, to take our masks off outside and read people’s lips and study their smiles. We can even consider traveling outside the country. On the other hand, after living with a fear of human contact, how much can we set aside our concerns about the public health dangers of interacting with other people? A return to offices On the one hand, we have a chance to speak with each other in person, to share stories about our lives and our children and to discuss the surprising run of a Knicks team guaranteed to have a winning record this year. On the other hand, we have to deal with traffic, parking spots, lines at lunch, and conversations that keep us from returning to the homes we couldn’t wait to leave.

Motherhood: The best (not always) of times

S

trange as it may seem, I always wanted to be a mother. Even before I was in elementary school, I remember hoping someday to be a mother. Thinking back on my early years, I was really more of a tomboy, playing stoop ball and stick ball on the block with the other kids. I did have one doll that I loved. It was quite a progressive doll for its time. I could give it a bottle, and it would subsequently pee. My mother would make sure the baby bottle Between that had come with you and me the doll was filled with BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF water and not milk. But other than that, I wasn’t particularly given to imaginative girly games like playing house or cooking. I just knew that when I grew up, I

wanted to be, among other pursuits, a mother. The idea, of loving a child, teaching a child, nurturing a child, made me happy. Then I grew up, married a man who also loved the prospect of having a child, and in a short time, we had three. That is, we had three boys within four years and two days. Ever hear the old adage, be careful what you wish for? On the one hand, I adored my boys. I fed them, bathed them, dressed them, played with them and hugged them a lot. On the other hand, I well remember a moment when I sat at the kitchen table, my head down on the crook of my arm, and cried. The three of them were screaming “Mommy!” and chasing each other around my legs with two of them needing diapers changed at the same time. There were dishes in the sink, the next batch of dirty laundry was behind me in a pile, waiting to be put into the overworked washing machine, I had not had a chance yet to change out of my nightgown, and I was seriously doubting I would ever get out of the kitchen alive. This from someone who was

never much for crying except in sad movies. They were exceptionally good communicators. I was convinced that they caucused every night before bedtime and arranged for each to wake me up during the night with a loud scream at a different time. One of my neighbors, catching sight of me putting out the garbage one morning, commented to another neighbor that he had never seen anyone look so tired. Yup, that was me. But then there was the other side of the experience. They got a little older, made friends who, it seemed, always lived at the farthest reaches of the district, and of course I drove them frequently to play dates. It gave me a chance to meet lots of other mothers. I drove them to weekly music lessons, which enabled them to join the school bands and orchestras. We proudly attended their initially cacophonous concerts that over the years turned into remarkably good classical music and jazz performances. They played baseball, joined the swim team and the tennis team, and

we thoroughly enjoyed cheering each at bat, each match, each meet, even if we sometimes melted in the heat or froze in the cold. Their academic efforts gave us great satisfaction. They studied diligently and sometimes won contests and awards, which gave us vicarious joy. Of less satisfaction would be a trip to meet with the teacher for discussion of any less than perfect behavior. Then it was prom time. And suddenly, for it seemed sudden, they stood before us in tuxedos, with young women on their arms who they were squiring to the dance. They were all grown up. It was the signal that they would shortly be leaving, eagerly leaving the nest and their parents behind. Yes, they came back regularly from college to have their laundry done and for some good meals. And I like to think for some great hugs. But they were off now, busy with their exciting lives, developing their careers, finding the women they would marry. And the best prize: grandchildren. How lucky I am that my wish came true.
