STUDENT TEACHING
STUDENT TEACHING constitutes a yearlong experience wherein all strands of the program come together to shape students’ evolving “teaching lives.” The year is composed of two full-time practicum sessions, one at the elementary and one at the secondary levels, both supported by carefully selected cooperating teachers and Program supervisors. Student teachers are expected to participate fully in the lives of their practicum sites, learning about routines and expectations while honing their teaching skills. Experiences at both levels of schooling offer students a comprehensive view of pupil needs as they grow and develop and afford a base from which to plan thoughtful and insightful lessons. Weekly seminars provide a forum for the discussion and testing of practicum experiences and an opportunity to explore with peers the role of art education within the realities of contemporary schooling. The student teaching experience is informed by course work taken during the first year. This comprises work in artistic development, curriculum, history of art education, philosophy, diversity, special needs, processes and structures, explorations in new media and studio. Students also carry out a supervised yearlong sequence of site-based observations in schools, community settings, museums and other such places where children and adolescents gather together to make art.
