2017/18 SCHOOL OF

Dental Science

WELCOME This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the new Dental School and Hospital building. It was opened in 1998 by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, and President Mary McAleese launched a major scientific meeting in College to mark the opening of the refurbished Hospital. Many of our alumni will remember the landmark events of the last twenty years and 2018 promises to be just as memorable. New courses, the development of online and blended learning, the development of digital dentistry, advances in research and the College-wide Trinity Education Project (TEP) programme are reshaping the way our undergraduates are taught. The TEP programme to reform undergraduate teaching in Trinity was launched to meet the changing needs and expectations of our students and prospective employers which are shaped by globalisation and the rapid expansion of technology. The TEP Programme defines a set of attributes that have been broadly defined as to think independently, to communicate effectively, to develop continuously, to act responsibly. Whilst our students already possess many of these attributes, the Dental School recognises the need to maintain a student-focused approach and streamlining the way in which our programmes are delivered.

Pathways to Practice and Gradlink Wrap-up

Gradlink Launch 2018

In response to recent student surveys, the Dental School organised a Pathways to Practice Evening on 31st January 2018. The evening included presentations on a range of topics including foundation training in Ireland, financial management, practice management, working

abroad, careers in academia and research. The event was very well attended and the feedback has been extremely positive. The presentations were followed by the wrap-up of Gradlink 2018, followed by a reception in the Common Room which was attended by the students and

mentors. Most of the students had actively engaged with their mentors throughout the programme and were delighted to have another opportunity to meet up.

Alumnus Interview - Advan Moorthy

Advan Moorthy, B. Dent. Sc. (2013)

1. What are you doing these days? I am currently in my first year as postgraduate student in Prosthodontics here again at the School of Dental Science in Trinity. It is a 3 year full-time programme. It is a very intense course, requiring long days in the hospital. This typically involves planning and treating complex cases, studying prosthodontic literature, conducting a research project

and completing laboratory. Despite the intense workload, I am enjoying every minute of it largely due to the excellent mentors and teachers I have and my awesome coresidents. I also work part-time in private practice as a general dental practitioner occasionally on Saturdays. Prior to this I had spent some time in rural Canada working in private practice and working as an NCHD here in the School of Dental Science. 2. Why did you choose to study in Trinity? Well, it’s the best! The education you receive in the School of Dental Science is unparalleled. I realised this when I spent some time away from Dublin and Ireland. 3. Are you still in touch with other alumni? Yes, we are in contact all the time. Having small

classes in the Dental Science programme allows you to develop long-lasting close friendships. Social media also helps in making communication easy and convenient. 4. What are your strongest memories of Trinity/School of Dental Science? Probably 4th Year. I really enjoyed the time spent organising fundraisers for our Dental Overseas Voluntary Elective and I also enjoyed traveling to Cambodia to do voluntary work in a prison. 5. Have you any advice for current students or fellow alumni? Spend some time away – it will make you appreciate how really far you have come and appreciate still how much more there is out there.
