TCDA Takes To The Road by Sharon Lutz, TCDA Executive Director In my first year as Executive Director of TCDA, I quickly learned that what happens in choral music in the state of Texas is incredibly special. Seven years later, this realization is even more profound, as I see the talent our convention attracts every year. I am including our choral directors in this pool of gifted individuals, as well as the inspirational talent we bring in every single year! TCDA is truly something special. To that end, your TCDA Board in the last few years has made a conscious decision to offer workshops outside of convention to members and prospective members. These outside offerings serve a number of useful purposes: they are a way to showcase the exceptional talent of in-state and out-of-state music educators; offer members continuing education credits; provide an opportunity to interact with colleagues outside of convention; and give high school students an opportunity to learn about TCDA. We must always recruit for new members! You may recall that in March 2017, TCDA partnered with the Dallas Children’s Chorus on a workshop by Dr. Sandra Snow, Professor of Choral Conducting at Michigan State University. Dr. Snow held a Conducting Master Class Workshop for Elementary and MS Choral Directors in Dallas. It was well attended. Also last
year, we held two additional High School Student Leadership Day events, one in the DFW area, and one in Lubbock, also very well attended. This year we were very excited to announce a very special workshop given by Josh Habermann, Director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus and Music Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, entitled “An Afternoon with Josh Habermann.” It was held Saturday, April 28th at Lake Highlands High School in Dallas. This workshop featured a discussion on programming multicultural music and included a reading session of music from Asia, Polynesia and the Pacific Rim. Joshua also discussed performance practice of Latin American music with practical tips on how to perform this music with singers of any background. Also important to note, this year we will NOT hold a High School Student Leadership Day at convention. However, TCDA is planning to hold this popular all day workshop in four different Texas locations in 2018. So stay tuned and check the website for more information as we finalize these dates, and encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity. Lastly, we want your ideas for future offerings. Please contact a board member, or feel free to send your suggestions directly to me at Sharon@tcda.net. We hope to continue these offerings, and expand on them as well, but we need your help to make this a consistently successful effort. Thanks for your support, and see you in July.

Bon Appétit! Greetings from the President by Dr. Pam Elrod Huffman Last year, a friend sent me a link to an article by composer Nico Muhly entitled, “Why Choral Music is Slow Food for the Soul.” (The link is listed below.) I was particularly struck by the following sentence: “We live in a time of chaotic global ever-availability: I was served asparagus on a plane in January and, in the same month, saw depressinglooking corns on the cob in a rural Icelandic grocery store.” What we do as choral conductors is so foreign and, in some respects, antiquated in today’s world of immediacy. I need more paper towels, so after a couple of clicks on my iPhone, Amazon will deliver them to me the next day. Someone texts me while I’m driving, and I can’t stop myself from asking Siri to read me the message. I remember the days when you left the house (to go to the store to buy paper towels) and knew that if someone called you (dear young friends – we had these things called landlines….), that person would call back until he or she reached you after you had returned home. Technology is awesome. I’m fortunate to live in a world of such incredible convenience. But within that world is my real world – a world without quick, easy answers and prompt delivery of the product. The world of choral music. It’s a world of beauty, process, timelessness, and relationships. It’s a slow cooker in a world of microwaves. How lucky I am – we are – to be a part of that world! And how lucky we are that there is an organization whose sole existence is devoted to our unique world. An organization that provides us with three intense, joyful, and inspirational days of delicious choral food every summer. Your Board has been cooking the 63rd Annual TCDA Convention for almost a year – and this banquet is going to be scrumptious! I can’t wait for you to sample the interest sessions, the reading sessions, the exhibits, the worship service, the rich learning opportunities that our headliners will offer, and of course, the beautiful performances that will be presented by The Dallas Street Choir and mirabai. It’s a slow-cooked feast for the soul, and I look forward to sharing it with you! Bon Appétit!

Sharon Lutz
Executive Director 3
Candidates for the 2018-19 TCDA Board TCDA presents 3 candidates for president-elect Dr. Randall Hooper Dr. Randall Hooper is the Director of Choirs and Vocal Activities at Texas A&M UniversityCommerce. He conducts the Men’s Chorus, the Chamber Singers and Chorale, oversees the master’s program in conducting and teaches undergraduate courses in conducting. Randy also taught high school choral music in Texas, and choirs under his leadership have performed in many venues including Carnegie Hall and SWACDA, as well as touring internationally. A composer and editor, Randy’s edition of the Sweelinck Psalm 100 is published by Carl Fischer Music, and he is a contributing author to the book Anthony Burgess and Modernity. In 2012 Randy was a guest conductor at the Festival Internacional de Música de Campina Grande in Brazil, and the following year, the A&M Commerce Chorale performed as the festival’s guest choir. Most recently, Randy conducted the A&M Commerce Men’s Chorus in a performance for SWACDA in Kansas City, MO. He is currently the Director of Music at Kavanaugh UMC in Greenville, TX. Randy served as the TCDA Vice President for the College/Community Division (2012-2014), and is a member of TCDA, TMEA, ACDA and NCCO. Randy earned a BME degree from Texas State University, a MM degree in choral conducting from Baylor University, and a DMA degree in choral conducting from LSU. If elected… I have been attending TCDA conventions for 29 years, and for all of these years the value of TCDA has been obvious to me. Its membership is connected through a common passion for creating art and instilling the next generation of musicians. TCDA is at the core of binding us together through this common goal. Each year I return home excited about new music, new ideas and teaching strategies, and with a renewed motivation and wholeness that comes from being around my colleagues. All that I gain from each convention is reliant on the membership. Through a formal reading session, a workshop, a concert or informal conversations with colleagues, the “take away” from TCDA is based solely on its members. We make TCDA what it is, and the greater value we place on the relationships fostered through TCDA, the greater value it has for us as individuals and as an organization. If elected, I will work to ensure that future choral conductors are guaranteed 4
Thomas Rinn the same benefits I have been afforded through TCDA. The responsibility of the board is to usher TCDA into the future without losing sight of its greatest purpose: to educate, support and inspire ourselves, the Texas Choral Conductors.
Dr. Mark Rohwer Dr. Mark Rohwer is the Director of Choral Activities at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Mark has been at FMHS since its opening in the fall of 1999. Under his direction, Flower Mound High School choirs have received consistent Sweepstakes Awards at UIL Concert and SightReading Evaluations. In addition, choirs from FMHS have been invited to perform at the TMEA Convention three times, as well as at both Divisional and National Conventions of the ACDA. Mark holds degrees in music education from Northwestern University, the Eastman School of Music, and The Ohio State University. If elected… TCDA has always been a mirror of the profession that I feel called to, and of the people I hold in the highest professional regard. Nothing inspires me more than seeing thousands of choral directors from all over the state showing genuine enthusiasm for finding new ideas for the rehearsal room, new music to add to their repertoire, and new colleagues with which to connect and brainstorm. Times change, and with it TCDA and the methodology the organization uses to reach its members needs to change, too. The next years will be clearly challenging, as technology and communication evolves so quickly that one can hardly keep up. Just because an idea or innovation is new, however, does not mean that a particular idea or innovation is good; the pace of the world often means that we jump on to the next big “thing” quickly in fear of missing out. I can’t say for certain that I know what challenges we will need to overcome, or go around, or rethink. I can say unequivocally, however, what I think the “soul” of the TCDA is: a group of passionate choral directors wanting to find the best choral music to give to those in our care, the best new ideas to fulfill our calling even better than before, and a cohort of like-minded colleagues and friends to lift us up and support us. This is who we are. And it means everything to me.
Thomas Rinn is currently in his 17th year of teaching choral music in Texas. He serves as Director of Choirs at Colleyville Heritage High School in the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and is Director of Music at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Arlington. Choirs under his direction receive consistent accolades at local and regional festivals and have performed as invited ensembles at TMEA in 2010 and 2018 and at SWACDA in 2018. Thomas happily strives to give back to the organizations that serve music education, having served as the TCDA High School VP, TMEA Region 5 Vocal Chair, UIL Choral Sight-Reading Committee Chair, and in numerous volunteer positions as a section leader and organizer for TMEA groups. Thomas is a frequent choral clinician, adjudicator, and presenter of teacher training nationwide with engagements most recently in Texas, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, and Colorado. He holds a BME degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a MM degree from Florida State University. If elected… Having recently completed my term as the High School Vice President of TCDA, I have a clear and detailed understanding of the issues facing TCDA. The organization is in a time of transition as it seeks to be relevant and useful to a new generation of teachers while also upholding the strong traditions of its past. If elected President-Elect, my primary goal during my term will be to increase the relevancy of the organization to its membership. The role of TCDA must continue to evolve from that of a yearly new music reading clinic to a resource that supports the professional development of our membership year round. It is only through this increased engagement of current membership and outreach to the choral community not currently involved in TCDA that the organization can remain both financially sound and effective. I believe I hold the unique ability to bridge the traditions of the past with the needs of our future, and can help transform TCDA into an invaluable resource that will serve future generations of Texas choral directors.
TEXAS SINGS! • Spring 2018
TCDA presents 3 candidates for College/Community Vice President Dr. Joni Jensen
Dr. Jeb Mueller
Dr. Michelle Roueché
Dr. Joni Jensen is the Director of Choral Activities at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, Texas. She conducts two TWU choirs and teaches voice and conducting. Joni is an active conductor, clinician, and arranger. The TWU Concert Choir, under her direction, has enjoyed several prestigious performances, most recently at the National Collegiate Choral Association Conference in 2017. Joni has published several pieces with Walton Music, including “El Vito,” a Texas All-State piece in 2014, and she is the editor of a new series at Hal Leonard for advanced women’s choral music. Joni is the Associate Musical Director of Millennial Choirs and Orchestras (MCO), a multi-location community organization. They released their album “Amazing Grace” in 2016, peaking at third on the Classical Album Billboard Chart. Joni earned a BME degree in vocal performance and pedagogy and a MM degree in choral conducting, both from Brigham Young University, and a DMA degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona.
Dr. Jeb Mueller serves as Associate Director of Choral Studies at the University of Houston Moores School of Music where he conducts three choirs, teaches choral music education courses, and maintains a graduate conducting studio. Jeb is an active clinician, adjudicator, and conference presenter with engagements throughout the U.S. He recently conducted the Louisiana Men’s All-State Choir, and Alliance Music published his arrangement of Handel’s Scherzano sul tuo volto. Jeb’s choirs have been described as “stellar,” “inspired,” and singing with “mature line and a beautiful, vibrant tone.” Under his direction, UH’s Concert Women’s Chorus performed at the 2016 ACDA Southwest Division Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Jeb taught high school choral music in the Houston area for six years, and his choirs consistently earned superior ratings at contests and were twice chosen the Overall Best Choir at state and national choral festivals. He holds degrees from The University of Miami, The University of Texas at Austin, and Texas Tech University.
Dr. Michelle Roueché is the Director of Choral Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Her choirs have been invited performers for several Georgia Music Educators conventions, two Southern ACDA conventions and the 2014 Southwestern ACDA convention. An active clinician and choral arranger, Michelle is represented by Walton Music and Treble Clef. Her compositions have been featured at ACDA and All-State conventions, and premiered by choirs across the globe. She has performed in Carnegie Hall under the baton of Robert Shaw and appeared as an Artist-in-Residence at North Carolina State University. Prior to UMHB, she served on the faculties of Brenau University (Georgia), Waldorf College (Iowa), and Arizona State University. Michelle also serves as the Director of Music at Woodway First United Methodist Church in Waco. She holds music degrees from Texas Tech, the University of Illinois, and Arizona State University, where she studied accompanying with Pavarotti’s accompanist, John Wustman, and conducting with Donald Bailey.
If elected… For many of us, TCDA is crucial to keeping our passion for choral music alive, bringing lasting friendships and keeping us relevant in our trade. What would we do without it? I would like to express gratitude to all who have served TCDA. Their immense efforts have enriched our membership and given us support, knowledge, and guidance. If elected Vice President of the College/Community Division, I will consider it an honor to follow such leadership, and keep the TCDA tradition thriving! It will be important to seek out the concerns of the membership to ensure that my efforts create the greatest benefit possible. Although in a position of leadership, I would consider myself a servant to you, the membership, to help you achieve your goals and perhaps even enrich your vision. Our work is that important! My involvement in both collegiate and community choral settings will inform me of the needs and trends in each arena, and assist us in finding opportunities for growth. Collaboration and communication are central to our success. Working together, I know we can positively impact our choral community.
If elected… My admiration for the people and mission of TCDA runs deep, so I feel strongly about contributing to its ongoing success. If elected College/Community Vice President, I will work with my fellow board members to celebrate TCDA’s past while positioning it for a thriving present and future. The best teachers constantly re-evaluate their work in order to meet their students’ needs, and I believe the same concept should guide TCDA’s efforts. Innovation and flexibility will play critical roles in our longterm success, especially given the world’s rapid digitalization. Therefore, I want to focus our convention’s interest sessions on experiences that cannot be Google-searched or found on a publisher’s website. Since choosing to run for office, I have sought the opinions of numerous TCDA members; while they express respect and gratitude for TCDA, many feel our summer convention would benefit from some fresh ideas. They want more social gatherings that allow our membership to network with their colleagues, so I would explore that as well as other possibilities that would meet their needs. TCDA plays an important role in our profession, and if elected, I will work determinedly to ensure its continued leadership.
TEXAS SINGS! • Spring 2018
If elected… After living and teaching in various parts of the country, I was eager to come home to Texas! We are blessed with an extraordinary legacy of choral excellence unlike any other place I’ve seen. First, I would like to use this opportunity to acknowledge my high school choir director, Dr. Richard Watkins, and my beloved mentor, Dr. Donald Bailey, for providing me with such an outstanding foundation. I am so grateful for my Texas training and for TCDA! As Social Media (or perhaps anti-Social Media) tends to isolate us from the real world, TCDA provides a crucial opportunity to build community, grow strong relationships, and replenish our musical souls. If elected Vice President for the College/ Community Division, I will strive to give back to the organization that has given me so much. I want to help promote music that we are excited to share with our students, explore strategies that make our teaching responsibilities more manageable, and continue the wonderful legacy established by all the previous TCDA officers.

TCDA presents 2 candidates for Church Vice President Sid Davis
Robert Stovall
Sid Davis is the Director of Music and Fine Arts at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, where he oversees a program including music for children, youth and adults as well as the Rotunda Theatre and Art Gallery. Sid is a published composer/arranger and a Melodious Accord Fellow, studying under Alice Parker, as well as having toured with Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians as a soloist and instrumentalist. He enjoys traveling as a clinician for choral workshops around the country. Sid graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana and did graduate work at the University of North Texas.
Robert Stovall has devoted thirty-three years to the Texas Public School System as well as four years in the Private Education arena. Robert is a Past President of TMEA. He is in his third year as the Director of Music and Worship Arts at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. While in the education field, his choirs were awarded UIL sweepstakes, festival grand champions, and convention performance invitations, including five invitations to perform at the TMEA convention. In 2015, Robert was recognized by his peers with the TCDA Choral Excellence Award. He has served his profession in several capacities, including TCDA, ACDA, TMEA, TMAA, and most recently, the Texas Music Administrators Conference. He is an active adjudicator, speaker, clinician, and conductor on the state and national levels. His responsibilities at FUMCFW include conducting four of the many performing ensembles provided in the music department. This includes the parent ensemble, Choral Union. A native of West Texas, Robert graduated with BME and MME degrees from Angelo State University.
If elected… I am honored to be nominated for the office of Church Vice President for TCDA. I would like to offer my congratulations to Dan Baker and other members of the board as they have worked diligently to keep Texas the foremost choral state in the nation. If elected, I will strive to bring together ensembles from all walks of choral music - church choirs, college and university, as well as public and private school, so that singers of all types can benefit from shared knowledge about this unique musical and community building art that we enjoy. I would hope we can continue to move away from compartmentalizing into “school choirs” or “church/ synagogue choirs” or even professional vs. amateur organizations, and work to “cross-pollinate” so that everyone learns from everyone. Choirs who lead worship in churches and synagogues form the grass roots of our art, both in terms of bringing people into music and creating life-long supporters of choral music in all its forms. If elected, let’s work together and do all we can to support faith-based choral organizations.
On-line Voting Opens in May!
If elected… Through the years, TCDA has experienced many challenges and meaningful changes, and our organization has expanded into a most impressive assembly of educators and musicians. I am extremely honored to be considered for the Church Division Vice President of TCDA. Many before me have served in this capacity and given us wonderful experiences due to their devotion to church music and the importance it serves in our organization. If I am elected, I too, will pledge my time and devotion to our organization. There are discoveries to be made concerning our full-time church musicians as well as directors who take on church responsibilities in a part- time role. If elected, I look forward to exploring these opportunities and sharing with the membership new ideas that can be beneficial in developing meaningful worship experiences. Bringing fresh and appropriate ideas to TCDA is the key to providing an uplifting and meaningful worship experience. While providing appropriate music and curriculum in our churches is a challenge, it is my goal to provide our members with these assets. Working with the board and the membership, we will strive to better equip our church musicians and educators by providing supportive activities, music, and experts in the field of worship and music. Giving our membership an opportunity to gain experience in optimum and appropriate worship is a worthy goal, and I pledge to provide such an experience. I look forward to the challenges and am grateful for the opportunity to serve.
All Active and Retired Members are encouraged to vote. A privilege of membership is electing Board members to ensure a strong future for TCDA. Please review the candidates in this issue and vote on-line, or use the enclosed form.

TCDA presents 2 candidates for Elementary Vice President Angela Brill
Katy Flowers
Angela Brill is an Elementary Music Teacher with over 35 years’ experience in both public and private schools. She returned to public school teaching after 29 years and is currently a K-4 music teacher in Conroe ISD at Powell Elementary in the Woodlands. Angela began her career at Barbers Hill Elementary, where she taught for six years before moving to St. John’s School in Houston. Her choirs and students performed twice as an invited Elementary Honor Choir at TMEA. In addition, her students performed in a classroom demonstration and have been placed in TCDA, ACDA, and OAKE Honor Choirs. Angela presented a workshop at TCDA in 2013, “It’s All About the Singing.” She holds memberships in TCDA, ACDA, TMEA, and OAKE. She earned an undergraduate degree in Music from Hardin Simmons University and a MM degree with Kodály certification from Sam Houston State University
Katy Flowers is an Elementary Music Specialist for Midway ISD, where she is in her second year teaching 5th grade music at River Valley Intermediate School. Prior to that, she taught K-4th grade music at South Bosque Elementary School for 10 years. A music educator for 26 years, Katy has experience at all levels, elementary through high school, in districts throughout Central Texas. During her years in Midway ISD, she has been awarded grants from the Midway Education Foundation to bring innovative technologies to her classroom, and she was a member of the first Midway Wired cohort for technology. Katy has coached UIL Music Memory for many years, and served as both Campus and District Coordinator for the Elementary UIL Academic Meet in Midway. Katy also serves as the Associate Director of Music and Worship for Woodway First United Methodist Church, where her responsibilities have included directing choirs for children and youth, handbell ensembles for all ages, and coordinating weekly worship services. She is a member of TCDA and TMEA, and holds a BME degree from Texas Tech University.
If elected… I am excited and honored to be nominated for the office of TCDA Elementary Vice President. I love teaching music and bringing the joy of singing to my students. I have attended TCDA conventions for many of the last 30 years. In addition to finding new music for my choirs, I have grown as a musician by attending honor choir rehearsals and other workshop sessions. How boring our teaching would be if we were to teach the same songs with the same techniques every year. If elected, I want to encourage music teachers to attend TCDA. It is one of the best ways that we can learn and grow in a different atmosphere. A former student wrote to me, “When I first came to this school I wanted nothing to do with singing, but as you can tell, now 80% of my life is singing, dancing and acting. By next year it will probably be 110% of my life. I have never had a voice lesson, but you have changed my life so much.” I wish for us to have this effect on all of our students. If elected, I will concentrate on sessions that offer meaningful ideas for bringing the love of singing to the elementary music classroom and to our elementary choirs. I would be honored to serve as your TCDA board member.
If elected… A second-generation music educator, I had the privilege of seeing my father, Nick Boltz, serve as President of TCDA many years ago, and I am so very honored to be nominated for office in the same organization he served with such pride. I have many fond memories of attending TCDA conventions as I grew up, and I learned early on that the summer conventions are crucial times for renewing connections with colleagues, brushing up on skills for the coming year, and getting excited by new music and new ideas. If elected Elementary Vice President, I will gladly accept the challenge of working alongside the other board members to continue to offer innovative and excellent experiences for the membership of the Elementary Division.

TEXAS SINGS! • Spring 2018
JULY 26-28, 2018 • San antonio, Texas WORSHIP SERVICE
Friday, July 27 Church Service 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Dr. Allen Hightower
Composer, Artist, Clinician, and former sacred music editor for the Lorenz Corporation in Dayton, Ohio, Mary McDonald will lead the congregation at this year’s Worship Service with some of her most beloved anthems, including “God of Our Fathers.” Joining Mary will be our friend Dr. Allen Hightower, University of North Texas, and the orchestra from San Antonio’s University United Methodist Church, with Mary McKay, Director of Traditional Worship & Music.
Mary McKay
About Mary McDonald by Beverly Schlegel A lifelong resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, multi-talented musician Mary McDonald has composed over 1000 published choral anthems, Christmas and Easter cantatas, and numerous keyboard collections. Her unique blend of heart, hands and humor, combined with a wide-range of writing and performing styles, keeps her in constant demand as a composer, arranger, producer, pianist and organist. In 2011, Mary answered a new calling after serving as Editor of Sacred Choral Music for twenty years at Lorenz Corporation. She took her tremendous passion and love for music-making directly to churches as an independent artist, and she stays in demand in churches across the nation for Composer Weekends, and as host for top Choral Music Dealer conferences in the country. No stranger to glass ceilings, Mary’s energy and charisma served her well when she became the first woman President of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference in 2000. But whether serving as accompanist for the Tennessee Men’s Chorale, her local church, or receiving prestigious composition awards for artistic merit like the John Ness Beck award, her desire remains the same: “to give God glory for the songs He has allowed me to compose. He alone, is the true Creator behind my pen.” Mary is looking forward to participating in the TCDA convention, when she will lead the congregation in singing, “God of Our Fathers.” “I am truly honored and humbled to be the guest composer for the sacred sessions at this summer’s conference. To have this opportunity to share my heart and the inspiration behind the music with those who may sing it, is a moment to treasure. Looking forward, with great anticipation, to our time together in San Antonio.”

63 rd Annual TCDA Convention HIGHLIGHTS (cont.) About Tesfa Wondemagegnehu by Beverly Schlegel TCDA members are in for a real treat at this year’s convention. Joining us will be Tesfa Career: Wondemagegnehu, current Director Tenor Soloist, Conductor, Clinician, of Choral Ministries at Westminster Lecturer Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis (Tesfa has accepted a new Employment: position beginning Fall 2018 • Director of Choral Ministries, teaching voice and a Westminster Presbyterian Church, “Music and Social Justice” Minneapolis, MN (August 2016class at St. Olaf College in June 2018) Northfield, MN). At our upcoming • Former Conductor of the American convention, Tesfa will present a Public Media (APM) Radio Choir & clinic open to all divisions entitled Manager of the Choral Works Initiative, “Performing to IMPRESS vs. SINGING St. Paul, MN (July 2014-August 2016) to inspire.” He will also deliver this year’s • Choral Stream Producer, APM Convocation remarks, tentatively titled, “Relevance (November 2013-July 2014) in the 21st Century Choir,” a fitting topic to Tesfa’s viewpoint of music and ways to draw the circle wider in music’s availability and enjoyment by as many • Assistant Artistic Director, VocalEssence people as possible. (June 2013-July 2014) A tenor soloist, Tesfa’s career trajectory has been somewhat non-traditional. • Educator, Freedom HS, Orlando, FL He got his start in music after the ninth grade. To the dismay of his mother, he was suspended for selling stolen pagers, and she forced him to audition Education: at a talent-based performing arts school. That experience turned Tesfa into BME, University of Memphis a “choir addict.” He taught at Freedom High School in Orlando, was named MM, Florida State University Orange County Public School Teacher of the Year (2013) and received the Macy’s National Magic of Teaching Award (2013). Tesfa’s choirs performed at ACDA state conventions (2010 & 2012) and at the Florida Music Educators’ Association (2011). After teaching in Florida, Tesfa moved to the Twin Cities to the chorus-crazy scene in Minnesota, as the first-ever representative of Classical Minnesota Public Radio’s Choral Stream and manager of the station’s Choral Works Initiative. The goal was to bridge and integrate on-air, on-line and outreach efforts by featuring recorded and live concert performances from around the country and the world, and according to Tesfa, “to make the art form more relevant to a larger demographic, such as bringing live performers into schools.” Through Choral Stream, a 24-hour, 7-day week on-line stream, Tesfa interacted with listeners, singers, composers and conductors, through blogging, social media, community-building, outreach and education. When Tesfa took the helm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in 2016, he continued to “think outside the box” as a music educator. He began The Justice Choir, a choir that sings songs about peace, freedom, courage, love, resilience, human rights and taking a stand. Its collection of songs is available as a free download for anyone, anywhere: other choirs, congregations, families, schools, and communities. In Tesfa’s words, “good singing is good singing. Period.” Tesfa believes choral music will continue to explode, and that music should never be boxed in. “To hears groups like Pentatonix say, “it all started in a choir, is exciting.” He attributes YouTube with more groups creating music. “Allow music to resonate whichever way it decides to touch people.” We are excited to welcome Tesfa to this year’s Convention! 2018 Convention Offerings by Division Energize, Motivate and Keep Teaching Relevant! Elementary by Debra Johnson Hold on to your hats – it’s going to be a wild ride this year with relevant sessions for the seasoned choir director and the classroom music teacher in search of inspiration for both classroom and PTA programming! The amazing Ruth Dwyer is our featured clinician and conductor of the 2018 Elementary Honor Choir. Ruth will lead the choir through a variety of exciting music, and I promise this concert will be amazing and inspirational! Ruth will also share her knowledge through her session Harmony in Sequence: Sight-Reading Made Easy. Want to get your students up and moving? Be sure to attend Katherine Johns’ Building Community Through Folk Dance – great for starting off class or after-school choir in a fun way. Take Your Honor Choir to the Next Level features a panel discussion with esteemed directors Cecile Johnson, Cyndie Lowry and Lindy Perez, as they share tips, tricks, and advice to reach the next level of choral artistry. Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Wonderful World of Technology with Michele Hobizal explores apps to help with assessment, student-centered activities, and a plethora of tech ideas for you and your students. Angela Leonhardt’s A Story, a Song, a Performance is Born will guide you through weaving together a performance ready show using children’s literature as a base. Think Orff Schulwerk is just instruments? Then attend Julie Scott’s workshop Choral Singing the Orff Schulwerk Way and learn four choral octavos using elements commonly used in the Orff Schulwerk approach beginning with melodic line, movement, and improvisation – and YES, there will be packets for early birds! Gain confidence in the classroom with singing games and a warm-up routine to train your future choir members in vowel shaping, breath control, and pitch matching with the dynamic Phyllis King leading Classroom to Chorus: Vocal Development and Singing Games. And enjoy exploring new repertoire as Sheila Donahue directs us in the Unison/SA/Holiday Reading Session. TCDA convention is a great place for shopping the exhibits, visiting with friends old and new, and finding inspiration for the new school year! Y’all come!
Middle School/Junior High by Christina Chapman This summer’s 2018 convention is not one you want to miss!! Clinicians Jocelyn Epley, Dorrie Seamans and Sarah Bayles will present a session highlight this year, entitled Tried and True: These are for You! Each clinician will take you through five of their favorite pieces for MS/JH and beginning HS, and you will leave with a list of over 115 choral favorites from these conductors. Sandy Hinkley will give you tips on Motivating the Middle School Singer, exploring topics about the developing voice, choosing functional repertoire, avoiding struggles in classroom management, and more. Are you a Google Classroom user? You have to use Google in your choral classroom, so now what? Hate grading papers? Tired of collecting hundreds of t-shirt order forms? Clinician’s coming, but you have the flu? Then you’ll want to hear What the Google? with Melissa Smith and Joe Nidever. Wanna know how to go From Zero to Hero as a super-star MS/JH teacher? Join Clinton Hardy (King of the Bow-tie) as he takes you on a journey to build and maintain your choral music program with social events, fundraising activities, mini-boot camps, choir officers and ways to connect to the entire campus. And don’t miss Conducting Workshops with Christopher Aspaas and Sandra Snow to sharpen your choral conducting skills, in these two separate sessions on technique! Last but not least, our reading session conductors will be Jason Brown, Nathan Dame, Shannon Duckett, Kara Kasberg, and Courtney Patten. See you in July!

High School by Jason Dove We are looking forward to a great convention in 2018. The High School and Middle School Divisions are combining forces to offer sessions to reconnect us to the art of conducting. Dr. Sandra Snow, Michigan State University, and Dr. Chris Aspaas, Texas Christian University, will each offer a conducting session to hone members’ skills and enjoy the fellowship of singing together. Also, Nora Henson and Keith Dixon are teaming up this year and bringing their best game to our Tried and True Session. Need help with the ever-changing world of technology? We are offering a useful session for both MS/HS directors entitled What the Google? with Joe Nidever and Melissa Hall Smith. And don’t miss Wes Davis presenting Reinforcing Musicianship through Contemporary A cappella. Last but not least, in addition to these energizing and exciting opportunities, we are looking forward to our fantastic reading sessions (HS Treble; Tenor-Bass, Holiday/Seasonal, and Pop/Jazz are shared with JH/MS; and Advanced SATB is shared with College). There is something for everyone! See you at the 2018 convention.
College/Community by Carolyn Cruse The 2018 TCDA Conference will include engaging sessions and musical events for the College/ Community Division. Our Headlining Clinician is Dr. David Rayl, Director of Choral Activities at Michigan State University, leading two informative sessions: Gesture Matters: Communicative Conducting for More Effective Rehearsals and Better Performances, and Reasonable Romantic Repertoire for Voices and Instruments. Another highlight will be Dr. Cory Mastronardi Ganschow (Western Connecticut State University) presenting Peak Experience: A Triptychal Approach to Transformative Rehearsals. A convention tradition will feature student conductors from colleges/ universities across Texas, where the students will take the podium to conduct the Advanced Junior High/High School Reading Session. Coaches will include Dr. Dianne Brumley (Emerita, UT Rio Grande Valley) and Dr. Alan Zabriskie (Texas Tech University). Dr. Elisa Wilson (UT El Paso) will serve as the Conductor for the Advanced SATB Reading Session, a session combined with the HS Division that will include repertoire appropriate for advanced high school and collegiate-level ensembles. Accompanists include Karen Eychaner (UT Permian Basin) and Hanna Lee (Texas Tech University). We will have two Round Table Sessions—one specifically for our college/university student members; the second will feature a “Power Panel” of women conductors-teachers (members of mirabai) in a Q&A regarding contemporary issues encountering women in our profession. It is an honor to welcome mirabai and conductor/artistic director Dr. Sandra Snow as our featured invited ensemble during TCDA 2018. The concert will include repertoire from their debut album release, including works of contemporary American composers Abbie Betinis and Andrea Ramsey, rediscovered seventeenthcentury works by women composers, and David Brunner’s Ecstatic Songs. You will not want to miss this incredible opportunity during TCDA—Friday, July 27, 4:30 pm in the Hemisfair Ballroom!
Church by Dan Baker This summer’s headliner for the Church Division is composer/arranger, organist and pianist, Mary McDonald. Mary’s wealth of experience, compositional expertise, and energetic personality will be the backbone for multiple workshops and the annual Worship Service. We’ll pack in at Travis Park UMC where the “congregational choir” – that’s YOU, will worship together with a service including some of Mary’s most beloved anthems, all accompanied by the orchestra from San Antonio’s University United Methodist Church, with Mary McKay, Director of Traditional Worship & Music. UNT’s Dr. Allen Hightower will assist at the podium while Mary McDonald is at the keyboard. We are in for a glorious hour of worship together. Playing with Power, Passion, and Purpose and Serving in the Trenches tops the list of Mary McDonald’s sessions for directors, music ministers, and keyboardists. In addition, Todd Prickett will lead How to Choose Repertoire for the Church Choir: Three Secrets to Success, while panelists Todd Wilson, Dr. Robert Pendergraft and Mary McDonald will lead an open conversation on multigenerational worship issues, entitled Bridging the Great Divide. Finally, Dr. C. Blake Simpson, Department of Otolaryngology at the UT Health Science Center, and staff from the UTSA Voice Center, will lead The Aging Voice: Strategies for Success, with Nick Boltz, moderator. We continue to tweak the reading sessions for the Church Division to give you quality literature for the church year. Our conductors are Russell Farnell (Sacred Seasonal–Christmas/Easter rolled into one), Monte Garrett (Sacred General), and Karen Andrews (Sacred Children’s/Youth). They will be accompanied by Justin West, Georgia Kornegay, and Pam Elam.

In Memoriam TCDA appreciates your submissions of deceased colleagues. Many of these individuals made significant contributions to the choral profession, and changed the lives of countless students. In an effort to acknowledge deceased TCDA members as well as non-members, we will provide a listing of every individual reported to us in this issue of Texas Sings! (the deceased acknowledged in a previous issue are not included in this listing). If the deceased was a TCDA member, a brief acknowledgement will be included; if not a TCDA member, the name/city/ employer/title/date of death will be noted. Please keep in mind that a donation to TCDA may be made in memory or in honor of the deceased through member registration, or at any time at tcda.net (Giving Opportunities). In addition, details to set up a TCDA Endowed Scholarship may be found on the website, or call Sharon Lutz, Executive Director, at 512-474-2801, for more information. TCDA scholarship funds provide a critical resource to assist future music educators with their career objectives, and is a wonderful way for a choral director’s legacy to live on in perpetuity.

Results will be announced at the Summer Convention. All voting is now online. Voting will open May 1 and remain open through the close of Convention registration. Pam highlighted upcoming offices for future board candidates. If interested in High School Division VP, MS/JH Division VP, or Secretary/Treasurer in the 2019 elections, members may submit their name to Jennifer Gallagher, the nominating committee chair. Pam presented SWACDA details: • The event dates are March 7-10 in Oklahoma City, OK. Pam cited the number of TCDA members presenting or presiding over interest sessions during the conference this year, and noted that ten Texas choirs are performing. She extended thanks to Stan McGill, SWACDA Site Chair. Pam shared highlights of the upcoming 63rd TCDA Convention: • Convention dates are July 26-28 in San Antonio (Thursday thru Saturday) with sessions held until the closing of the Honor Choir Concert. • Our fabulous Elementary Honor Choir will be under the direction of the amazing Ruth Dwyer. Audition information is on the TCDA website. • Don’t miss a performance by mirabai, an extraordinary new professional women’s ensemble under the direction of Dr. Sandra Snow. • A Worship Service on Friday, the 27th will be held at Travis Park UMC, and will feature Mary McDonald, the Church Division headliner. The entire congregation will be the choir this year. • This year’s “Sing-In” piece will be Gabriel Faure’s Requiem with conductor Dr. Kenny Sheppard. • Dr. David Rayl from Michigan State University will be the College/Community Headliner. Dr. Rayl will present two sessions entitled “Reasonable Romantic Repertoire for Voices and Instruments” and “Gesture Matters: Communicative Conducting for More Effective Rehearsals and Better Performances.” • Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, Headliner, will lead a session entitled “Performing to IMPRESS vs. SINGING to Inspire” open to all divisions. Tesfa will also be our Convocation speaker on Saturday, July 28 (following the business meeting). His theme will focus on “drawing the circle wider” and feature a cameo appearance by the Dallas Street Choir. • New music reading sessions will be streamlined this year with 11 new music reading sessions and two Tried and True sessions. • Interest sessions are going to be filled with great ideas and inspiration, including a 2-part conducting track with Dr. Sandra Snow and Dr. Christopher Aspaas. • Our Fun Run and Golf Tournament will both be held on Thursday, July 26.
