The Glee Club In accordance with the new policy inaugurated last year by Professor A. Tillman Merritt, the Glee Club has been giving a series of concerts in and about Hartford. The purpose of these has been, not only to raise money, but also to give the Glee Club practical experience through singing in public. The first appearance made this season was in December at Glastonbury, Connecticut, where the Glee Club was supplemented by the newly organized Trinity Orchestra, which played for a dance following the concert. In addition to choral music by the Club, the concert consisted of piano solos by Thomas E. McDermott, Jr., carols by a quartet composed of John P. McGarvey, William C. orvell, Frederick B. Wierk, and Nathaniel B. Abbott, and musical skits by Charles H. Smith and William F. DeVoe. In their next performance the Glee Club appeared at the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Here the program was composed of several songs by the Glee Club, piano solos by McDermott, a short sleight-of-hand performance by Herbert E. Todd, and baritone solos by John A. Gowen. On February 12th the Club made its first appearance in Hartford at a concert in the Broadview Community Church. This time the piano solos were supplied by John C. Melville; Smith and DeVoe put on their act, and John F. Martens rendered violin selections, the remainder of the program being filled by the Glee Club presentations. The following week the Club gave a short entertainment for the benefit of the patients of the Hartford Retreat. At these four concerts the program of the Glee Club itself included the following numbers: "Fain Would I Change That Note" by Morley, "Adoramus Te" by Palestrine, "Fight" a Finnish folk-song, "On the Water" by Brahms, "The Dance of the Gnomes" by Mendelssohn, "Estrellita" by Ponce, "Fireflies," a Russian folk-song, two English folk-songs, "Swansea-Town" and "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker," and "Bonnie Dundee," a Scotch folk-song. Soon after midyears the members of the Club were somewhat disappointed to hear that the New England Intercollegiate Glee Club Contest, which was to have been held at Boston in March, was cancelled because of lack of financial backing. At the same time, however, they learned of another event which, partially, if not wholly, allayed their disappointment. This was the announcement that on March 19th there would be a joint concert by the Women's Choir of Wellesley College and the Trinity College Glee Club, to be held in the Bushnell Memorial Hall in Hartford. At this time the combined organizations presented five selections from Handel in addition to several numbers by each club. This affair proved to be by far the largest and most important production ever attempted by a Trinity Glee Club. Between the present writing and date of publication at least two more appearances will be made by the Glee Club before commencement. Engagements have been made for April 8th at the Fourth Congregational Church of Hartford, and for April 23rd at Wethersfield, Connecticut. Last spring a series of evening campus concerts was given, and it is expected that this year a similar group will be presented. At the Class Day exercises last June for the first time, members of two years' standing in the Club were presented with appropriate gold charms ..

The Jest ers This school year found the Jesters ambitious and capable. Early in the fall they decided that the production of at least three full-length plays should be the aim of the organization, or:e in the fall, one after Christmas, and a third after Easter. As a first presentation, Somerset Maugham's three act, drawing-room comedy, "The Circle," was immediately put into rehearsal. In its structure and its style "The Circle" is characteristic of Maugham at his best. It is a model of light comedy, a form as delicate as it is difficult, in which apparent ease of execution conceals a very fine art. It was produced in ew York in 1921 with a cast including John Drew and Mrs. Leslie Carter. Mr. William Helm bold of the Greek and Latin Department was the coach of this production which was given December 11, 1931, in Alumni Hall, followed by dancing, with music furnished by the newly-organized Trinity orchestra. There were seven main characters in the play of which three were women's roles, all played by students. In the leading roles were: R. J. Howard, '34, as Clive, H. J. Oxford, '33, as Arnold, J. M. Prutting, '33, as L ord Porteous, G. A. Day, '34, as Edward L uton, J. J. Sharkey, '33, as L ady Catherine, and . W. Hubinger, '33, as Elizabeth. A. E. Austin, Jr., curator of the Morgan Memorial in Hartford and instructor of Fine Arts at the college, staged the production. Attempts were made early in the year to procure some place on the campus which could be converted for use as a little theater and in which a series of plays could be produced entirely by the student-Jesters. This would increase interest in the Jesters, afford an opportunity for students to see a number of plays, and offer many more an opportunity to "tread the boards." o suitable location could be found because of crowded conditions, but a group did produce the one-act play, "The Bishop's Candle-sticks." The play was done in the public speaking room not long after the Christmas vacation. It was entirely the result of student effort. Jack Grenfell, a non-matriculate student, took the leading role and also coached the play, while the part of the Bishop was done by P. E. Coyle, '33. The performance was free to all and was admirably received. Early in the new semester of 1932, a cast was picked for the play "Wings Over Europe" by Robert Nichols and Maurice Browne. The cast, which worked under Mr. Helmbold's tutelage, presented the play on the evenings of April 8th and 9th, 1932, at the Hartford Club. The large cast of nineteen was made up of male characters, among which were: J. M. Prutting, '33, R. J. Howard, '34, H. J. Oxford, '33, G. A. Day, '34, N. Clark, '34, and J. A. MacVeagh, '32. Later on in the month the production was given at Connecticut College for Women. Strides have been made during the year in the accumulation of scenery and lighting equipment which furnishes a basis for more finished productions and foretells, under present leadership, a growing and progressive organization, one which some years ago would have been thought an impossible pipe dream. Financially, the Jesters are very stable, more so in fact than they have been for many a year. Debts have been entirely wiped out and a comfortable balance established. This situation allows that more attention may be paid to the drama on Trioity campus than has been the case for man y years.

The continued progress of the building program has made the year now closing a notable one in the history of the college. June will see the Dining Hall opened and the interior of the Chapel completed. Both of these add much to the beauty of the Campus. The Cook Dormitory has been in use since February and provides comfortable living quarters. The College is broadening the opportunities it affords students. A college represents opportunity. It is not the function of the college toed ucate young men, it should be said rather that a college should give young men a chance to educate themselves. Those who desire such an opportunity must show first that they qualify by previous education and evidence of character. For detailed information about entrance requirements address the Dean
