Trinity College is in a state of transition . Since 1960, five new buildings have been erected on campus. Enrollment has increased; the faculty has been enlarged; requirements for admission, as well as for graduation, have become more rigorous. The college administration has become more encompassing and more streamlined. The reasons for these changes lie beyond the Trinity campus: the college is responding to the universal change in education. A complex, technical world demands academic excellence in specialized fields, and these demands will be met by students leaving accelerated high school programs for a college which can assure them the education needed. The Trinity IVY will assess the college's position to determine the value of the 1965 Trinity College Bachelor's Degree. Our focus of interest will be the student, for it is he who analyzes the qualities that draw him to a college, who reacts to the opportunities offered, who is either motivated or unconcerned about his college education. The members of the IVY staff have no crystal ball; instead, we have compiled the opinions of faculty, administration, and students concerning Trinity's direction.

The Trinity Student is one openly concerned with his own merits and motivations. He is bent on self~examina颅 tion, self-criticism, and consequently, self-improvement. In the words of one professor, he is more intent on "badgering people with silly questions," in order to find ways to improve himself and the college community. Is he a better student than the one this college has seen in the past? The answer must be "yes" if higher College Board scores will be accepted as evidence. The answer must be "yes" if a lower percentage of attrition will be accepted as evidence. The answer must be "yes" if a higher proportion of admissions to graduate schools will be accepted as evidence. The Trinity freshman coming to campus is better prepared academically than ever before. He is doing better work than his predecessor of only five years ago. He is not only more apt to do work 路assigned, but is also more likely to find it more interesting and to I' make sensible comments about it. Faculty members have noted this improvement, for example, in the kind of papers he writes. Not only more meaningful in what they say, they are also more pleasingly articulate in how they say it. They are more likely, one professor has noted, to contain "all those elements that delight the heart of the English Department." Thus, the Trinity freshman today comes through Downes Arch better prepared to do the work ahead of him. He is more intelligent and better educated. Some feel, however, he is only "conventionally intelligent, less original and interesting" to the point of "disaster proportions." He is "too grim and earnest!"

Is the Trinity man really interested in "learning for its own sake?" Most of the faculty and administration wistfully expound on the idea of "akademia" as a selfsufficient purpose, but the majority concede to the aim of education as learning to "live with oneself and the world around him" or "making oneself useful in the world." Graduate school, the business world, or just getting a diploma, seem to be the aims which motivate the Trinity student. In short, he is interested in the semi-annual report card. He has to be obedient to the dictates of graduate schools or company interviewers which more and 路 more keep a constant but invisible, effective but silent spirit over the campus. The student is becoming, in effect, deferential to the requirements of these "pragmatic directions." If the Trinity student studies harder than his predecessors, he does not seek to employ his academic experience in his "free time." His entertainment seems to stem from subjects completely void of an academic nature; thus, his focus of attention is very rarely the Atheneum's Rembrandts but predominantly and without consideraion, Northampton's Rahar's. The faculty, in trying to determine where and how the student spends his leisure time, can only wonder where all those cars go on the weekend that were here during the week. As for the student, he feels that, generally speaking, his scholastic endeavors cannot be applied to "free" time activities, and even if they were, the tendency is to forget entirely the world of academics when on the outside, off campus. The majority of undergraduates who discussed this topic regarded "free time" as good parties, non-academic discussions, and skiing on neighboring slopes.

The question naturally arises of why the Trinity student cannot go beyond the routine forms of entertainment. According to administrators who have had opportunities to survey universities and colleges around the nation, the Trinity student is not attempting to place himself in a "collegiate" framework. The Trinity student is not pretentious. The problem of the student is that he is not "diverse" enough to allow for unusual interests to rub off on the usual sort of undergraduate. There is no strong influence on the contemporary level to reform, to redirect, to enlarge the scope which the student brings to Trinity. Thus, both the pragmatic direction and the lack of originality seem to be the product of a campus group that can enjoy itself within the traditional college framework but cannot within this framework benefit beyond the "norm." The Trinity student now would be generally intolerant of that diversity which the college would like to attract. That there are individuals with diverse interests cannot be denied, but that they are often lost in a seemingly uninspired group, too, must be considered. Yet, with the student's self-awareness, he is realizing his faults. He is becoming a part of a "moving force" which seeks more benefit from the total experience of his education. Though considered "dull," he has helped to guide the direction of a changing Trinity. His new awareness and his increased capabilities have enabled Trinity to rise from a "second or third choice school, with a good social life-a convenient place to go." Now, because of the students, the college is attempting to break away from its traditionally conservative ties as can be seen by the readjustments in the chapel requirements, renovations in the curriculum, and reassessment of antiquated campus social regulations.

40

41

This Trinity in a state of change is a Trinity of many paradoxes. It is the Trinity in which the spectrum of opinions concerning the fraternity system ranges from "absurd, atavistic, and adolescent" to "learning to live with others in the world," or an important part of "finding the sort of social experience the student needs." It is the Trinity where faculty "would like to see students required to take advanced courses outside their major area" and where students are limited to certain fields of study because of the "pre-requisites" needed to enter any sort of advanced subject. It is the Trinity which attempts to find ways to allow the student to participate in the social life of the college, but, in turn, forces the student away by the rigors of a somewhat antiquated understanding of what comprises the social life of the student. Trinity College is the community in which the individual is expected more and more to develop and grow by himself because he is "a man," and yet, as an institution it becomes more involved with every aspect of his college life. The student is told that he must work out the problems which the society presents to him, and at the same time, is shown the direction to which he ought to head. One cannot condemn Trinity for the seeming inconsistencies, for this is a college in a state of transition, for these are just the birth pains of a college determined to grow with the times.

The diploma, which the members of the Class of 1965 shall hang on their library walls, many years from now, will represent a Trinity different from that of 1965. The most profound change will be noticed in the type of student that Trinity will have. Although the facilities of the college will be enlarged, the individual student will be the most important aspect of the college life. Trinity College will contain a group of diverse undergraduates. It will be a melange of nationally and internationally scattered groups from varied social backgrounds. The group which the college administration foresees is comprised of "someone who's excited for something, who's looking to college as something big, who's going to college because there's four years of something that may change his life." The individual who looks for this "something" might be "a real strange one" or the "oddball." He might be the typically aggressive type who sees his college career as an immediate step to fulfill his ambitions of money and fame, or he might be the "dilettante" who cannot concentrate on one project for any length of time but is continuously involved with something that excites him. Equally as important, he might be one who "doesn't really belong in college", "who doesn't know why he's here and admits it." All these different segments will be distilled in a group that, on the whole, will be smarter than the one that graduated in 1965, and that will be more prepared for college before it arrives at Downes Arch. And most significantly, each individual will be a member of a society interested in his individuality-a society to which he will be expected, and will be able, to contribute.

The "new" Trinity student will be attracted by a college that appears to de-emphasize the present s路ocial framework . The cliques made by fraternities will have changed because the fraternity structure of 1965 will be unable to offer the new, interesting undergradute the complete diversification that he will desire. On the other hand, the undergraduate will not wander aimlessly, but will commit himself to some aspect of college life. The future student's extra-curricular activities will be enhanced by the new facilities on campus. However, his extra-curricular realm will, at the same time, extend beyond campus. A new community-oriented student will flnd his time divided between college activities and such projects as volunteer hospital participation, student teaching, and other communal activities. As the pressure of the "outside" is forcing the college to reconsider its position in the light of the modern world, so, too, will the Trinity student of the future feel intensely the need of being more concerned with the world which surrounds him. From the diploma on his walls, that world will recognize the concerned, dedicated, liberal, interested, and interesting person called the Trinity graduate.

Over the previous three years the freshman soccer teams had lost a total of only five games. Members of these three squads, united by spirit and teamwork, became the 1964 Varsity Soccer team, one of the most successful in Trinity soccer history. From pre-season toy blocks on the Alumni Hall floor, the squad went on to gain New England and National recognition. At the same time they became the 16th consecutive winning soccer team at Trinity.

FOOTBALL

Coach Jessee's pre-season prognosis claimed, " . . . it could be an interesting season." In the final analysis, however, injuries to key players forced untried sophomores to gain their experience in the games. There was a lack of depth and mistakes were made; games were lost. But against arch -rival Coast Guard, an alert defense stole the boll, intercepted passes, recoverd fumbls; we went on to sink the Coasties and their coach, former football great, Commodore Otto Graham. The welcome victory was the 140th varsity football win of Coach Jessee's career.

During the season, a feeling prevailed on the Fencing Team that no one at Trinity seemed to care about them. Attendance at their meets was sparse, and the athletic department provided little support. The result was a spotty record. At the New Englands, however, spurred on by a desire to bring back the first place trophy, all our representatives fought well. led by a strong sabre team, the fencers won the champ ionship, unsupported.

As proved at Trinity before, a winning swimming team needs depth, to capture the seconds and thirds, as well as the路flrsts. This year's losing season was no exception, for a lack of over-all strength easily outweighed individually strong efforts by team members.

During Spring Vacation, the Junior Varsity won the Cyprus Gardens Regatta against Florida Southern, Purdue, Jacksonville, and Tampa, U. Both Varsity crews lost to Rollins College in a dual meet after spending a week of practice on their course as guests of that college. Because of the recent over-all success of rowing at Trinity, however, the Athletic Department voted to change crew's status from an i nformal sport to a varsity team. A new boathouse is is under construction, and the revival of crew continues on the Connecticut River.

Even in the early spring the Varsity Lacrosse Team let it be known that they had no intention of returning the sport to the Indians. After winning their first four games on a southern exhibition rood trip, the Bantam stickmen went on to collect eight more victories to rank with Navy and Denison as the only undefeated teams in the nation. Individual and team records chased each other in a seemingly never:ending procession until the Wesleyan game when the season came to on abrupt holt. There was no question in anyone's mind, however, that this was one of the most formidable lacrosse teams in New England.
