The Trinity Ivy 1969 The Ninety-Sixth Year of Publication

We should begin by stating the significance of ed ucationa I enterprise. In the broadest sense the liberal arts college is the arena within which we work out the meaning of human experience . . . . To create the requisite atmosphere there must be openness: ope路nness to ideas, debate, and dissent. There must be commitment: commitment to the search for truth, liberty, and understanding. There must be concern: genuine concern for the individua I. This and the following quotations are excerpted from speeches made by President Lockwood during the 19681969 academic year.

Sometime in the future an historian will ask how well we responded to the realities of our times. We have every reason to hope for a favorable judgement if we retain our faith in the creativeness of the individual, in the expansiveness of his soul and the compassion of his heart. Good luck.

IN APPRECIATION Professor Clarence E. Watters joined the Trinity faculty in 1932. His concerts and recordings have made him well known throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Watters holds the Masters degree in Music which he received from Trinity in 1935. He has successfully directed the Chapel Choir and has been Chapel Organist for many years. It was an honor and privilege to have Mr. Watters at Trinity, and we would like to wish him the best of luck.

When Dr. Harold Dorwart was appointed as Dean of the College in 1967 he already had behind him an enormous backlog of academic credits and teaching experience. A graduate of Washington and Jefferson College (1924), he received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1931. He taught at Williams College and Washington and Jefferson before coming to Trinity. Perhaps one of the reasons for Dr. Dorwart's wide popularity was that he considered mathematics both a science and an enjoyable pasttime. Dr. Dorwart's contributions to Trinity, both academically and administratively, have been great and we would like to humbly say thank you and good luck.

IN MEMORIAM

Trinity's association with Dr. Alfred louis Peiker goes back to before he joined its faculty, for he first came here as a student. He received his B.S. and his M.S. from Trinity in 1925 and 1927 respectively. In 1930, upon receiving his doctorate from McGill University, he returned to Trinity as a professor of chemistry. leaving the College in 1943 to join the American Cyanamid Company, he went on to become Director of the company's Product Research Department and its Stamford laboratories; and he also served as Vice-President of Cyanamid European Research Institute. In 1963 he returned once again to Trinity, not only as a professor, but also as a contributer to Successful Commercial Chemical Development. He held several patents as well as memberships to such chemical and textile societies as American Chemical Society and American Association of Textile Chemists. Dr. Peiker died on February 5, 1969.
