Edgar Allan Poe

In an address entitled "The Priviledged Community" President Theodore Lockwood welcomed both old and new students at the convocation ceremony. Speaking on the Quad, Lockwood said, "Liberal education begins with the assumption that we are free to learn and inquire for a purpose, to make judgements based on the result of that inquiry, and then to act on those judgements."

FOOTBALL With an abundance of experience and spirit carrying over from 1974's 7-1 squad, the Trinity football team in 1975 approached the season with optimism. Led by cocaptains George Rose and Steve Thoren, the squad traveled to Williams for the opening game. The two teams struggled on a muddy field to a 3-3 tie, despite a great performance by the Trinity defense. The following weekend Trinity got its offense clicking and defeated Bates in Maine. Returning home to a torrential rainstorm and a Homecoming crowd, the Bantams were upset by the lightly regarded Engineers from R.P.I. 13-9. The team got back on the winning track with three consecutive victories over Colby, Middlebury, and Coast Guard. The Middlebury game saw Trinity come from a 20-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to win on a sixty yard scoring play by John Wholley on a pass from George Rose with under two minutes to play. Coast Guard was the victim of Trinity's most solid performance all year, a 16-0 defeat. The offense, defense, and kicking game gave excellent performances in New London. The Bantams then travelled to Amherst and were stunned 21-20 in a tightly contested game. Wesleyan visited Dan Jesse Field for the season's finale and consequently handed Trinity its third loss of the year 14-9. The squad posted four wins, three losses, and one tie mark, short of the early season goal, but still a respectable year. Special credit was awarded to the squad's seniors, led by the selection of Tom Melkus as the winner of the "1935" award. George Niland and Victor Novak shared the Obfuscator Award, and Tony Lapolla was the recepient of the Dan Jesse Blocking Award. John Connelly and Gerry Laplante were named co-winners of the Laser Award. Other graduating seniors included cocaptains Steve Thoren and George Rose, Mike Flis, Jeff Gove, Richard Trachimoicz, Gary Jones, John Wiggin, Mike Maus, Pete Silkowski and John Who/ley. Head coach Don Miller was assisted by Rick Hazelton, Mike Darr, Dick Taylor, George Sutherland and Bill Harmon.

The losses came at the hands of Eastern Connecticut twice, 60-49 and 58-52; Brown 59-45, Yale 64-50, and Williams 6352. Leading scorer for the team was Nancy McDermott, who ended the season averaging 19.6 points a game. Under the direction of coaches Gail Andrews and Robin Sheppard, the team showed signs of brilliance and looks forward to their next season. This year's squad loses two seniors, co-captain Meg McGrail and Dawn Eberhard. Their contribution to the team and women's basketball at Trinity will be missed, but with nine returning letter winners for next year, experience will be a key role in the future. Other members of the team were co-captain Nancy McDermott, Cilia Williams, Penny Sanchez, Spitty Dobbin, Sue Levin, Diane Gordon, Kathy Crawford, Beth Bombright and Debbie Kitz. 193

SWIMMING 199

/

SQUASH It was the best of times and it was the best of times. What better time can you have when your team has an undefeated season finishing fourth in the land behind Harvard, Penn and Princeton, who don't really count anyway? We fulfilled that cherished moment, that exalted ideal, that oft-sought-after goal that is only obtainable when you say to yourself that you will not quit even when the sweat begins to roll, when the knees and the muscles ache, and when the blister develops on your little finger. It seemed as if the longer the points became, the more intense was our concentration . And, in the end, the truth finally surfaced after three years of deepfelt knowing in our heart of hearts that there is no challenger to Trinity's squash team except the usual top three mentioned above. Again, they are of little consequence, and we forget easily that Ivy League colleges even exist in the squash world. Trinity topped its various rivals with scores of 6-3, 5-4, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, 54, 9-0, 9-0, 8-1 ' 9-0, 9-0, 8-1 ' 6-3, 8-1 . 200

WRESTLING The Trinity wrestling team began its initial season as a varsity sport on an auspicious note, defeating heavily favored WPI 26-15 in the first match of the year. This victory is all the more impressive when one takes into consideration the fact that two of last year's outstanding performers, Bobby Friedman and Brian O'Donoghue, had been lost for the season due to injuries. However, the Bantam grapplers seemed to have peaked a bit early, as the first match was the year's outstanding performance by the team. Coach Dick Taylor led his matmen to a 4-8 record, which is more than a respectable record for a first year varsity team. Trinity's other victories came against Tufts, 26-24; Holy Cross, 31-9; and Western New England College, 33-15. The Bantams were on the losing end in contests with Rhode Island College, 17-26; Williams 21-31; Hartford, 13-33; Wesleyan, 9-31; Southern Connecticut, 9-31; Central Connecticut, 11-33; the University of Connecticut, 6-43; and Amherst, 3-43. After this somewhat disappointing record, the wrestlers managed a resurrection of sorts in the New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships held at Williams. Trinity scored eighteen points with one fourth place and two sixth places, and finished thirteenth in a field of twentyfour teams. The outstanding performance of the year was turned in by "cautious, but overpowering" Dave Corrtti with a 144 overall record and a fourth place finish in the New Englands. Co-Captain Mike O'Hare and Chip Meyers both placed sixth in the New Englands and finished with records of 13-5 and 9-6-2, respectively. Co-Captain Dave Katzka was felled by an injury at midseason and missed the rest of the year. The other members of the team included Mark Zen, John Parker, Mike Sapuppo, Phil Meister, Rick Meier, Nick Benson, Scott Goddin, Chris "Chief" Mosca, Carey Doyle, Barry Dorfman, and Pete "the giant killer" Bielak.

TENNIS The question is, is this the tennis team of Trinity College from Hartford, Connecticut. or San Antonio, Texas? Trinity's tennis team this year began a turnabout from the past five dismal seasons and established itself as a tennis power in New England for years to come. There are several reasons for the squad's improvement. The varsity lineup included four new men who had never before played a match for Trinity: freshmen Eric "Radar" Matthews, Tim Jenkins, Jim "The Reach" Rice and senior Bob Purcell. Over spring vacation while most students were drinking banana daiquiris on the strip in Ft. Lauderdale, the team was training and drilling under the brutal Florida sun. The trip to Florida, which included twelve matches against such schools as Florida Southern and Florida International, gave the team much needed match competition. The trip brought the team closer together, gave everyone free car repair instruction, and provided plenty of practice time. Shouts of "go-touch", "radar overhead", and "nice buzz" could be heard during any of the victorious matches. And there were plenty of victories! The team owned wins over the University of Rhode Island 8-1, the University of Hartford 9-0, Connecticut College 8-1 , Amherst 81, the University of Connecticut 8-1, Springfield 9-0, and M.l. T. 9-0. The singles lineup was: Eric Matthews 7-2, Tim Jenkins 7-2, James Solomon 8-1 , James Rice 8-1 , Charles Johnson 7-2, and Andrew Verilye 9-0. The Doubles lineup was: Jenkins-Solomon 6-3, Rice-Matthews 7-2, Jon Porter-Bob Purcell 7-

TRACK Sporting one of the most talented collections of athletes ever to grace Trinity's quarter-mile cinder oval, the 1976 track team was repeatedly frustrated in its attempts to achieve a winning record. Defeated by narrow margins in three of their four losses, the Bantam harriers and weightmen managed impressive victories over perennial New England track powers Keene State and WPI. The numerous record-shattering performances recorded by the members of this year's squad accurately demonstrates the quality of Trinity's talent. In the hammer throw, John "you animal" Connelly broke a record established in 1914 by heaving the ball and chain 155'. Records were also set in the three mile run by freshman John Sandman and in the distance medley relay by a squad composed of Dan Howe, co-captain Don Baur, Rich "Third-leg" Lovering, and Jim "Avis" Forbes. The team's leading scorers were co-captain Vic Novak, Tom Lines, Dave "Moose" Poulin, Brett Macinnes, and Hobie Porter. The team was ably coached by Howie Barnes, Rick Hazelton, and Dick Taylor. The April 20 loss to Williams represents the first time a squad coached by Hazelton has experienced a defeat on the Jesse Field track. Varsity letters were awarded to: Vic Novak, Don Baur, Jim Forbes, Rich Lovering, Hal Smullen, Dave Poulin, Kip Martha, John Connelly, John Ziewacz, Brett Macinnes, Harvey Bumpers, Walter Champion, Rob Fernald, Hobie Porter, Tom Lines, Dan Howe, Dave Kyle, James Davenport, and Eric Wright. Other team members included: Gary Ankuda, Bill Epes, John Sandman, Pat Hallisey, Barry Dorfman, Don Grabowski, Marty Cogan, Tom Heslin, Rob Pawlick, John Goodwin, Uko Udodong, Mark Montini, and Rich Wang.

CREW My oar handle is clammy. It might slip on the recovery of a stroke so I wipe my hands hard. Not on my racing shirt which is nylon and no help against the drizzle, but on my trow which ooze water. No good. My hands are still clammy. I shiver in the cold and try to master my apprehension. All boats to the line. As we finish the warm-up an unsettling anticipation descends. The boat responds with terse, psyche-building comments. "We're gonna paste 'em." "We' II kick." "C'mon, now, let's do it." I laugh awkwardly. I'm anxious to start. water and that we're moving well. The starter has a raspy, calm voice. I latch onto it and shake off the shivers, sitting ready. This is a cramped position. It's still drizzling. I look at the cox. Her face is stoic, shouting commands. The seven man is behind me. His presence is loudly felt, determined and eager. The six man, too, is tense. The five man I can sense only vaguely. We are as tight as a bow string. Suddenly we've started and in the pressured commotion we react impulsively, pulling frantically to get the boat moving. Water rushes to the stern covering my feet. Blades splash, slide wheels drone, coxswains shout. A frenzy. Get it going is all I know. Stroke up. On the cox's command we settle our stroking rate. We are even with Lasalle and behind Marietta. The start was good, I tell myself, only for a milisecond. I then concentrate on kicking hard, rowing strong. I breathe fast, three breaths to the stroke, 35 strokes to the minute. God, we've gotta beat 'em. "We've got a seat," the cox suddenly announces, interrupting her barage of coaxing shouts. "We've gotta have another. Take a ten." The cox counts off ten power strokes and our blades enter in the cadence of the call. Under the boat I hear tiny bubbles gurgling, indicating that our bow is riding out of the 212

Pull, recover. Pull, recover. "Keep strong," I scream silently to myself. We complete a crucial bend in the course. From here on in it's straight-away. Without turning my head I can see the cox and two stern oarsmen of the Lasalle boat. We've got to catch Marietta. Nearing the thousand meter mark - half way. Now it becomes a race of attrition. The initial surge of energy from prerace uneasiness is spent. My stomach is acidic, my legs hot. My arms feel palsied and powerless. I know the rest of the crew feels the same. Keep it going, nice and strong. Stay with it. Leg drive, you bastard, kick. (Within me, fatigue is trying to smother the urgency of the race.) "Pull your guts out. Don't lag on me now." It's the cox. "I want this one. Burn it out. Here's the 1500 meter mark. Let's go through Marietta. Take a ten. This stroke. Ready. One. Drive the legs. Two. We're movin' on 'em. Yeah. Three. I got their cox. Give me their stroke ... " Pull, recover. Pull, recover. Breathe hard. We are half a boat length up on Lasalle. I can just see the cox of Marietta. We've got a seat. Now's the time to burn out. Find a further limit

of physical exhaustion. Stay controlled. 300 meters left. I'm straining with muscles rubbery and acidy-hot. It's crucial to keep control. It's crucial to put out totally. Now we sprint, taking the stroke rate up in ten second intervals. The stroke goes up two. "C'mon. Let's go through 'em." The cox is banging the steering pegs with woodpecker rapidity. Everything is hot and pounding. I hear the din of the

crowd at the finish line. The stroke goes up to a frantic rate. Pull, recover. Pull, recover. Here comes the line. I feel panicky, ecstatic, adrenalized, and generally incoherent. There's Marietta's stroke. He's off the corner of my right eye. I can't get enough air in my scorched lungs, but there's Marietta's stroke.

We've got a seat and we're movin' on 'em. Christ, the crowd's loud. We're at the line. It's almost over. Just a few more strokes. We're there. Yeah, Jesus, we're there. First across the finish line. God it's grand. Coach Norman Graf's Heavyweights finished the season with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses, the most spectacular race being a breathtaking win over their traditional arch rival UMass. His JV Heavies had a 4-7 season, and were coxed by Elizabeth Learned, the first woman at Trintiy to be honored with a varsity letter for her contribution to the sport. Coach Curtis Jordan's Varsity Lightweights had a successful 10-4 season, and the JV Lights struggled valiantly to a 2-6 record. Gary Caldwell's Freshmen Heavyweights showed great promise this season, with an 11-3 finish; his Freshmen Lightweights, however, surprised all, winning all of their 8 races. In the Dad Vail National Small Championships Regatta this year, Trinity made its finest showing ever, the team placing second over all. The Varsity Heavies finished second in their division, The JV Heavies placed ninth, the Varsity Lights sixth, the JV Lights fifth, the Freshman Heavies third, and the Freshmen Lights first. The Varsity Heavyweight boat was composed Jim Plagenhoef, Paul Wendler, Peter Van Loon, Harry Graves, Clark Patteson, Jim Chapin, Steve Berghausen, Char/is Poole, and David Greenspan (Cox). Members of the JVs were Mike Mackey, Scott Ramsay, Jamie Arnold, Dave Teichman, Tony Mazzarella, John Grous, Rich Friedman, Ted Pardoe, and Lisa Learned (cox). The Varsity Lightweight crew included Steve Steuck, Geoff Booty, Bill

GOLF •

The members of the golf team this year were Ed Staudinger (Captain), Jay Morgan, Chris Jennings, Tom Schultz, George Jensen, Nigel Mills, Bill Dodge, Larry Wells and Ted A/my. The golf team had a respectable season this spring, with 8 wins and 5 losses. Trinity lost three extremely close matches to Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams. In the University of Hartford Invitational we had a disappointing finish on a day interrupted by an electrical storm. We placed sixth in a field of fifteen teams. In the NESCAC Individual Tournament held at Taconic Country Club in Williamstown, sophomore Bill Dodge carded a 74 on the second day of this 36 hole contest and captured second spot.

Publication of the IVY is made possible, in large part, by the support of our patrons and advertisers. Trinity students spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in the Hartford community for goods, services and entertainment. On the following pages are the merchants and establishments who show their appreciation to Trinity, by supporting student activities such as the IVY. These are by no means the only firms that profit from Trinity, but these are the people who are willing to financially support our student projects, to show their good will and their thanks to the Trinity students. We hope you will continue to favor them with your business.

ENDPIECE When I returned to Trinity in the fall of my sophomore year 1 was still a bit skeptical about publishing a yearbook. My experience was limited (a semesters work soliciting ads for the business manager) and I realized that I would need a great deal of assistance from Trinity 's student body. Getting this help proved to be very frustrating . After glancing through various copies of the IVY from a few past years, and looking at the sizes of the staffs that previous editors had to work with I realized that I might be a bit handicapped. I also realized that the task of publishing a yearbook for the past few years at Trinity had been pretty much of a singular one, with a majority of the work being left up to the editor and a few loyal comrades that would stay at school after graduation for a week or two. I feel that the interest in a college yearbook has declined over the past few years at colleges both large and small. Some colleges have stopped having them completely. The cause of this lack of interest is due to the fact that fewer and fewer students are willing to spend the time and effort on a yearbook publication . No student will deny the value of student publications, but whereas a school newspaper is seen on a weekly basis and the achievments of its staff and contributors can be readily recognized, a yearbook takes a full year for completion and may never be appreciated except for one fleeting moment and then a decade or so later. I found it very difficult to organize a staff and to get people to help with this publication. Perhaps all student organizations have this problem but in the future I hope that a greater interest will be taken in the IVY. There is a great deal I owe to others for the completion of this task. First and foremost the publication of this book would not have been possible without the help of Karen Jeffers, Henry Reily, and Stephen Norris. Karen Jeffers was last years editor of the IVY. She patiently and consistently offered guidance and advice throughout the year. After spending countless hours on the publication of her own yearbook I could never understand why she wanted to spend more time on the preparation of the 1976 bo~k . She is a very good and generous person. Henry Re1ly was adamant about not accepting a position on the yearbook staff . He, with unfailing dedication carried out whatever task was asked of him . Equally as competent with an ektamatic machine as with a pica ruler, 1 made him the managing editor of the 1976 IVY for his efforts. To Stephen Norris I owe the greatest tribute. At the end of

There are numerous other photographers that are responsible for the photographic coverage in this book. Allan Moore and Mathew Quigley were the photoaraohv editors for the first semester. Other students 1wish to thank for submitting their work to the IVY are: George Griswold, Larry Papel, Dan Kelman, Howard Lombard, Margie Johnson, Betsy Becker, Hugh Mohr, Jody Scala, James Marsh, Steven Roberts, and Richard Ruchman. Gregg Loubier was our business manager and he kept us solvent throughout the year. The patron drive this year was the most successful in the history of the IVY. This success is due to Gregg and the many patrons who were kind and generous enough to assist th is student organization . The other members of the business staff who solicited advertisments are: Clement Ogi/by, Alex Moorrees, and Jean Beckwith. The 1976 Copy Editor was Nancy McCarthy. She prepared all the copy that went into this publication. Nancy Hayim was our layout editor and she, asssisted by Maggie O'Connell, was responsible for a great deal of the layout of this IVY. There are certain members of the administration who gave substantial assistance to the IVY: Bob Pedemonti, Trin ity's Treasurer, helped fill out income tax forms throughout the year. David Lowe and other members of the Central Service Staff deserve a warm thanks for filling out our requests quickly. President Lockwood opened up his slide library to us and several of the color shots that appear in the calender section can be attributed to him. Ralph Maddry also assisted us by submitting up to date lists of graduating seniors . Jim Findley, the representative from our publishing company also deserves a note of thanks. His knowledge of the business was invaluable. There are a number of other students, who although they have no title helped with the publication of the IVY. Among them are: Lucie Richards, Deborah Packer, Bennett Wethered, Katherine Mackey-SmitJ and Anne Brown. James G. Gregg Editor-in-Chief

December, after going through the number of photographs in the IVY office I seriously wondered if Trinity had had a fall semester at all. More than distraught, I was panicky, and quickly turned to Stephen for help in pulling our photography staff together. This he did with gracious ease while also taking a majority of the photographs that are printed in this book. I am indebted to him.
