Mark Green Inspired by ideas and concepts of psychogeography, my response to the ‘Sense of Place’ brief resulted in a collection of pictures of the (post)industrial landscape of Broadheath. I am fascinated by the ‘peri-urban’; places on the edge of town, where urban meets rural. One recurring feature in such environments is the electricity substation that takes the overhead lines from pylons, a predominantly rural feature, sending the power to the underground cables to continue its urban journey. Pylons feature in the series of photographs which concludes with the substation on Davenport Road. These peripheral and often overlooked locations are littered with discarded, lost and forgotten items that have served a purpose and inherently have a story to tell. It is this relationship between object and place that inspired my second project which I called ‘Peri-urban Sculptures’. This title references the series ‘Involuntary Sculptures’ by Hungarian French photographer Brassai who collected and photographed found objects and ephemera from the streets of Paris.

Richard Baugh Behind the Façade This group of photographs taken November 2019 to January 2020 were taken in Hale one of the wealthiest suburbs in England. The aim of the photographer is to show that behind the painted and glossy front of the independent shops on the high street which reflect the wealth of the area are the shabby backs of shops which could be found behind any shop in any area. This perhaps reflect the true image of the shop rather than the painted false façade of the front and which is hidden from the customer.

Michael Atherton My interest in photography began at Art College after leaving school where I became familiar with film photography and the now defunct dark room. I then completed a fine art degree where I continued to pursue my interest in photography by incorporating the said medium into my fine art practice. This multi-disciplinary approach then manifested itself in a number of self-directed projects over a period of years that incorporated collage, film and photography. In 2010 I returned to education and successfully completed an MA in Art History at the University of Manchester. Here again, my interest in photography became the focal point of my critical thinking. In addition to a detailed study of the Camera Obscura as a visual aid for drawing and painting in northern renaissance art, my MA thesis looked at the late work of Walter Sickert and argued that his use of photography as a visual aid for painting was a precursor to the pop art movement of the 1950s. My photographic interests then shifted back towards that of practitioner which led me to the UAL award in photography at Trafford College. More recently I gained a place at Manchester Metropolitan University to study an MA in Photography.

Callum Olive Due to the unusual times we are living through because of Covid I wanted to highlight the products that are now becoming part of our essential everyday lives. The images that I have taken I feel reflect this period, I wanted to display them in a way that elevated them from the hidden to the higher stature that they now command. A lot of my inspiration came from the masters of the seventeenth century who in their art demonstrated the importance of the products of their times and also Mat Collishaw from the present day who I found inspiring in his portrayal of the images he took.I hope I have shown in my images a feeling of isolation and darkness which is prevalent amongst us all at the moment, but equally with shards of light shining through which portray hope. 25
