T
he award-winning private island of Parrot Cay is distinguished as an ultraluxurious rendezvous destination renowned especially for the illustrious. But it just became easier to snap up a portion of this reserved paradise on one of the most exclusive isles the Caribbean region has to offer.
Dhyani House – a spectacular three-bedroom property occupying two acres of exceptional beachfront land – has undergone a significant price reduction bringing it a step closer to a proud new owner. Turks and Caicos, where accolades abound, rarely sees estates for sale of this calibre, and certainly not on such a revered celebrity playground. The route to Parrot Cay requires navigating the Caicos Bank, a briny sapphire expanse that circumscribes the Caicos chain and offers a quick and easy thoroughfare for those in need of space, silence and solitude. T
he West Shore’s nautical alias is ‘Mecham Beach’ of which Dhyani House possesses 535 linear feet; a frontage consisting of powdery, alabaster sands, arguably the pièce d’ résistance of this sprawling domain. The trade winds are a constant, erasing the meandering footsteps of the occasional beachcomber, creating a welcome mat for the homeowner’s excursions. Lapping at the shore is the majestic Caribbean Sea where onlookers can observe a symphony of colour in varying shades of turquoise. Its hypnotic effects, which first subdued the Taino of long ago, now sets its sights on the affluent at Como Shambala retreat promoting rejuvenation, revitalisation and reinvigoration. The near 5,000 square foot air-conditioned edifice provides a reprieve from the elements within its Brazilian 16 ISLAND GUIDE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
hardwood façade. The thoughtful design allows all three en-suite bedrooms maximum privacy. The exquisite interior flows seamlessly into outdoor spaces thanks to dramatic walls of glass that frame vignettes of the external amenities. The gourmet kitchen is replete with stainless steel appliances suited to the prowess of a private chef who is skilled at transforming the bounty of the land and sea into feasts fit for nobility, to be enjoyed alfresco on the ample teak deck or served in the formal dining room by an attentive private butler. With all the modern conveniences on hand including high-speed internet, residents can choose to stay connected or unplug and reconnect with nature, self and loved ones. All the amenities, too numerous to cite, conspire to create a resort residential experience that is unparalleled, uncomplicated and unobtrusive.

W
hile beach inspired souvenirs, gifts, art and accessories are all the rave in this shop, turquoise takes charge. Living up to the theme “Turquoise is the new black,” the star colour dominates on paintings, refrigerator magnets, beach wear, jewellery and other charming crafts. The distinctive colour, like the name Serene, evokes a calm, unruffled sensation – and that’s the main mood felt when you step into the space filled with elegantly simple handmade creations and handpicked gifts and accessories by owner Melissa Willcocks. Most of the products she makes are Caribbean and beach inspired. Her paintings feature beach sand, while the jewellery and other souvenirs have a nautical theme, or shells, anchors, fish, coral, seahorses and even sea glass. 24 ISLAND GUIDE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
In addition to her creations you can find beach bags and cover-ups and a few other local brands including Cheryl Forbes handmade dolls and Pepper Joy hot sauces. Melissa is no newcomer to creating souvenirs and mementos for sale but this newly opened gift shop, located at La Petite Place in Grace Bay, is her first venture into retail sales. Her love for scrapbooking led to the formation of her line, Orion Creations, which was launched only three years ago after she was encouraged by friends and family to create some ‘beachy’ handmade greeting cards. It was such a hit that she sold her first hundred cards to Beaches Resort and Spa, and as they say, the rest is history. The arts and crafts lover has been coming up with new, creative island mementos for sale ever since.
Painting simple seascapes is her signature thing, and can be found on picture frames, magnets, and paintings mounted on small easels. Fashion jewellery with little island inspired trinkets is also one of her specialties.

he Canadian native, who has now made Turks and Caicos her home did not imagine she’d have an art shop, she confessed, but always had ambition and knew she wanted to run her own business. Now, the new mom is enjoying her innovative venture and counts herself lucky to be able to do what she likes. Creating and purchasing is only a part of the fun. She prides herself in the incorporation of quotes and distinctive packaging of her products and attributes this to her marketing background. A peek behind a curtain that separates the displays from the back of her shop will reveal her work studio which she’ll gleefully allow you in – a space in which she’s continuously creating and designing new keepsakes and gifts for buyers to relish.

MEMORIES OF A TRADITIONAL
TURKS AND CAICOS
BY DAVID BOWEN
30 ISLAND GUIDE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
T
he celebration of Christmas in our islands has seen a dramatic change over the years. Traditional ways are slowly being replaced with more North American and European forms of celebrations due to increased exposure through travel, television, movies, music and the internet. However, we still retain some of our traditional ways. Every island in the Turks and Caicos had its own unique twist on how it celebrated the Christmas holidays but many would agree that Christmas in Grand Turk was a grand affair so let’s take a trip down memory lane and relive what Christmas was like back in the day, in the nation’s capital. Preparation for Christmas on Grand Turk started in early November. Everybody took great pride in having their homes repaired and spruced up. A fresh coat of paint was a must. Dressmakers would be inundated with orders to design and sew beautiful dresses in preparation for the various events and it was the popular Anglican Church Bazaar where all the young ladies wanted to go to showcase their fashions and compete with each other as this event launched the holiday season. Children would have saved all year in piggy banks to buy special treats there.
A
ll the stores on island were specially stocked for the Christmas season but it was Todd’s store that was the place where most people went to shop for gifts. If they happened to be employed by government, they would of course be guests at the annual Christmas cocktail party at Waterloo and you were expected to be formally attired, so a lot of time, effort and money was put into planning and preparing for this grand event. As a Christian nation attending church early Christmas morning is one tradition that is still very much intact in the Turks and Caicos. Eating and feasting is yet another Christmas tradition that is very much alive. After services most women would rush home to prepare breakfast for the many family and friends who would most definitely be stopping by. The Christmas turkey purchased live from Haiti would have already been plucked and dressed ready to be cooked in preparation for the big Christmas dinner later in the afternoon, not to mention the assortment of cakes made with raisins infused with rum over a period of months. Peas and rice, ham, chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese were also prepared and if you were fortunate to have relatives in the Caicos islands you would have received, by boat, a nice fat pig ready for slaughter.
C
hristmas day was an all day celebration. Christmas trees were home grown. The head of the family, days before Christmas Eve, would have walked through the bushes north of the island to select and cut down the perfect Christmas tree and brought it home by way of a donkey cart then left the rest of the family to decorate it with tin foil, ribbons, shells and whatever other colourful trinkets they could find. Presents of clothes, shoes, homemade toys, fruits and money were left under the tree. Santa Claus was not the larger than life figure he is today but children were still well aware of his contribution to the holiday and the gifts they found under the tree. ‘Maskanoo’ was not present back then but there was the ‘masses’, our Turks and Caicos style of Junkanoo. During the course of the day you could hear children screaming with fear or laughing with pleasure as ‘the
masses’ - a band of unknown persons dressed up in an assortment of colourful old clothes, scary handmade masks with covered heads - sang, marched and danced to the sound and rhythm of a Ripsaw band. They roamed the streets stopping at each and every house to perform their songs and dances. Everybody would run outside and often threw them money or gave them food, drinks and sweets. After all the Christmas food, cakes, pudding and treats were eaten, and all the punch, switcher (lemonade), ginger beer and other special beverages consumed, families would sit on porches enjoying the cool breezes, singing Christmas carols late into the night. A happy time was had by all - good clean fun, simple and joyous. It was all about family, friends and strangers celebrating the birth of Christ in the true spirit of the holiday. So as we count down the days ‘til Christmas 2015, let’s remember and be guided by our rich local Christmas traditions and be mindful to pass it on. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. With special thanks to my loving mother Pat Baker-Simms (a Lorimers / Grand Turk girl) for her wonderful memories.
