For year 29, Best of Topeka grows and grows
S
ometimes, bigger is better. That’s certainly the case with this year’s Best of Topeka magazine and event. This is our 29th year celebrating our city and its myriad residents, businesses and services, and we just can’t contain our excitement. With the event growing ever bigger, we’re moving this year’s awards ceremony to the Exhibition Hall at the Stormont Vail Events Center. It’s the first time we’ve been in the bigger venue, and we’re looking to welcome some 700 attendees as we celebrate. As demand expands even more in years to come, we expect even more to attend. And we’re celebrating even more of you. This year, we’re welcoming nearly 40 categories to the Best of Topeka family. They reflect newer trends, such as Best CBD Shop and Best Vaping Store. Other additions include categories that just make sense as we reflect on all of the elements that make Topeka a terrific place to live and work: Best Winery, All Around Restaurant, Best Pawn Shop, Best Independent Used Car Dealer. The community stepped up in a big way to pick the winners, too. We ended up with 23,000 participants and some 400,000 nominations and votes for businesses. Those are some seriously awe-inspiring numbers. So we’re getting bigger, and that means we’re able to welcome more of everyone from Topeka, as well as reflect more of the best of our friends and neighbors. But we couldn’t do this alone. It’s the enthusiasm of local businesses that enjoy promoting what they do and participate every year that make the Best of Topeka possible. The cliche at times like this is to say everyone’s a winner. But in the case of this magazine and event, I happen to believe it’s true. All of the businesses who participate? You’re winners. And all of the voters and enthusiastic participants? You’re winners, too. What of Topeka, our namesake and capital city? It’s the biggest winner of all.

Best New Business nominee — Cyrus Hotel Cyrus Hotel in downtown Topeka is more than a destination for out-of-town guests. “We’ve created a unique venue for not only outof-town travelers, but also locals as well,” said Stephanie Gassen, director of sales. “Being a part of the revitalization of downtown Topeka has been amazing, and we look forward to helping Topeka grow even more.” The hotel is named after Cyrus K. Holliday, a founder of Topeka and adjutant general of Kansas during the Civil War. It’s Topeka’s first boutique hotel, also offering fine dining options. “The Weather Room Restaurant draws locals and travelers in for a nice place to eat,” Gassen said. “You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy the restaurant or coffee bar.”

Offering an ever-changing menu that’s based on what the executive chef can find in-season at the local farmer’s market, the restaurant is open every day for
breakfast, lunch and dinner. A full bar is available in the Weather Room Lounge, which hosts Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Wednesday
nights are sangria night, in partnership with the Pennant and Iron Rail restaurants. “It’s a great after-hours place to hang out and have some of our signature cocktails,” Gassen said. Unique appetizer offerings include street tacos and zucchini carpaccio. A patio was recently opened off of the lounge, and patrons there can order from an exclusive patio menu. On the west side of the lounge, pick up a cup of quality gourmet coffee from PT’s Coffee, a local fixture that has partnered with the hotel. PT’s trains Cyrus Hotel baristas to craft its signature blends and espressos. “They are incredible to work with,” Gassen said. “We’re really excited to have them as a local partner.”

Cyrus Hotel also presents live and local entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday Night Live performances are held in the Weather Room Lounge, while Saturday performances are part of Cyrus Hotel’s Rooftop Summer Concert Series. All featured performers are local artists, and performances are free to the public. Cyrus Hotel participates in First Friday Artwalk as well, with local artists, a band in the Weather Room, jewelry pop-up shops and yoga on the rooftop of the hotel. A portion of all proceeds from these events benefit Arts Connect. Local groups and businesses can use 5,500 square feet of combined meeting space inside of Cyrus Hotel that Gassen says is perfect for corporate meetings, retreats and holiday parties. This year, special additions to the holiday catering menu will be available. Opened this past January,

the Cyrus Hotel was nominated for the Best of Topeka: “Best New Business” designation. “We are extremely excited and honored to be in such
great company with the other new businesses that were nominated,” Gassen said. “We look forward to serving our guests and locals for many years to come.”

Best New Business nominee — Iron Rail Brewing Exciting plans are on tap for Iron Rail Brewing in downtown Topeka this fall as the brewery and restaurant prepares to celebrate its first year in November. “This has been an exciting year for Iron Rail Brewing. We want to thank Topeka for the support during our first year,” said Austin Neher, director of marketing for AIM Strategies, who represents the business. Neher said that patrons can expect to see some different menu items at Iron Rail in the future and will also be able to try new, small-batch beer offerings made at the brewery. “We have the most fun with our Small Batch Series releases,” Neher said. “We feature a VIP who is allowed to tap the Small Batch and enjoy the first sip. Guests are then able to purchase a glass of the Small Batch and give it a try.” In addition to its popular Growler option, Iron Rail recently introduced the Crowler, a 32-ounce sealed to-go option for customers who want to enjoy their craft beer at home. But as Neher points out, there’s so much to enjoy at the restaurant itself. “The atmosphere of Iron Rail Brewing has a great vibe, and we have become a prominent downtown destination place,” Neher said. “From our artwork to our craft beer, we are a great option as a professional place to meet for lunch, dinner, dessert and a nightcap for business professionals, legislators, family and friends.”

Iron Rail Brewing was named to recognize the contributions that early railroad expansion had on the development of Topeka. Cyrus K. Holliday was influential in bringing the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway through the area, and the menu’s CKH Wheat craft beer honors him. “We are proud of the history of Topeka and the legacy of the railroad, plus the part that Cyrus K. Holliday had, from our artwork to our CKH craft beer,” Neher said. In addition to the brewery, restaurant and bar, Iron Rail Brewing has recently introduced an event space called THE TAPROOM, which will accommodate up to 40 people and can be scheduled for holiday parties, business and conference meetings, team building, business after hours, graduation parties, birthday parties, small networking conferences, reunions and more. It also offers a catering menu and is available to cater almost any event, from small office parties to tailgates, reunions and corporate functions. “We are very proud, but humbled
to be included in the Top 3 New Businesses designation for Best of Topeka,” Neher said. “Iron Rail Brewing dreamed of playing a part in the excitement of what is making Topeka a great place to be and visit. We will continue to strive to make Topeka proud.” Neher encourages the public to follow Iron Rail Brewing on social media to stay informed about upcoming events, including details on the upcoming one-year anniversary celebration. “So much is on the horizon for Topeka,” Neher said. “We love our location. We love that we are downtown. We are excited to be across the street from the new Evergy Plaza. Come see us anytime, and circle November on your calendar to join us for our first birthday. You are all invited.”

Best New Business nominee — Onxy Salon and Wellness Spa

The North Topeka Arts District is well-known for antique stores and art galleries, but as the area expands, more service-related businesses are moving there as well. Onyx Salon and Wellness Spa opened its doors in November under the leadership of owner Heather DiDomenico-Graves. The spa is currently the only business of its kind in NOTO. “I’ve always loved NOTO,” DiDomenico-Graves said. “Ever since the beginning of it, when I moved to Topeka nine years ago, I really looked for something like NOTO, a whole arts district area. When NOTO started to form, I was so excited for Topeka. So naturally, I’m thrilled to be a part of it.” Onyx is a full-service salon and spa that uses organic products for all of its hair services. DiDomenico-Graves says she decided to use organic
“NOTO HAS A HEARTBEAT. IT’S A COMMUNITY THAT WORKS TOGETHER TO MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN, AND IT HAPPENS BECAUSE OF THE HARD WORK OF ALL OF THE BUSINESSES DOWN THERE, AND IT’S REALLY AWESOME TO BE A PART OF THAT COMMUNITY.” HEATHER DIDOMENICO-GRAVES ONYX SALON AND WELLNESS SPA OWNER

products to protect her stylists and customers from harsh chemical treatments. “Hair is shinier, healthier and less damaged without all those artificial chemicals,” she said. Natural nails, pedicures, massage, aesthetics, facials and body waxing — as well as a detox foot bath and infrared sauna — are also available at Onyx. The detox foot bath is said to use positive and negative charges to break up unhealthy plaque that binds cells together, resulting in a re-energizing effect that boosts metabolism and reduces inflammation. Customers can enjoy the infrared sauna, which is heated to a therapeutic 120 degrees. Users sit in the sauna for 30-minute sessions. Benefits are supposed to include natural antidepressant properties, relief of arthritis, muscle aches, and fatigue and detoxification of the lymphatic system. According to DiDomenico-Graves, each session also burns 360 calories.

“It warms you from the inside out, and it’s 100 percent safe and healthy,” she said. Onyx, along with restaurants that operate in the area daily, has filled a niche that encourages customers to visit NOTO on a regular basis, instead of only on weekends or during First Friday Art walks once a month. “It’s been awesome for people to have steady daily foot traffic down there,” DiDomenicoGraves said. “Some of the businesses have been trying to be open more often. Having businesses like restaurants and salons makes it easier for those smaller businesses to be open and know that they’re going to get foot traffic. Come down to NOTO as often as possible and support your local businesses.” Two other retail ventures operate within Onyx, including a boutique inside the salon that sells handmade jewelry and sugar scrubs, and Flint Hills Publishing, a local publishing company that operates a book nook, featuring
the work of local authors. “There are a lot of cool new businesses. It’s become more innovative and a little bit younger,” DiDomenico-Graves said. “I think there’s something for everyone.” Onyx Salon finished in the Top 3 of the Best of Topeka voting for Best New Business this year, which DiDomenico-Graves said she wasn’t expecting. “It was very emotional for me. I was blown away to make the top six, and was definitely floored that we made top three. We are absolutely honored,” she said. DiDomenico-Graves attributes the success of Onyx to the NOTO community and business owners who have worked to make the Arts District what it is today. “NOTO has a heartbeat,” she said. “It’s a community that works together to make it all happen, and it happens because of the hard work of all of the businesses down there, and it’s really awesome to be a part of that community.”
