HEIGHTS STAR SITTING IN CATBIRD SEAT Shawnee Heights’ Wyatt Hubert realized a dream when he became the first member of Kansas State’s 2017 recruiting class — “That’s the only place I wanted to play,” he says — but the 6-foot-3, 260-pounder who is ranked by Rivals as the nation’s 17th-best strong-side defensive end has plenty of business to tend to this year for the T-Birds before he can turn his attention to the Wildcats. Before he realizes his dream of playing for K-State, defensive end Wyatt Hubert has prep challenges to tackle at Shawnee Heights

Swift says T-Birds must adjust to new playoff format By Rick Peterson

After recording 64 tackles and seven sacks in 2015, Shawnee Heights’ Wyatt Hubert enters his senior season ranked by Rivals as the nation’s No. 17 strong-side defensive end. Hubert, also a standout tight end for the T-Birds, committed to Kansas State in February.

CATBIRD SEAT By Rick Peterson

Wyatt Hubert has never been a settler. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Shawnee Heights senior tight end/defensive end decided early in his career that he wouldn’t settle for anything less than being a Division I football player. He also knew he wasn’t going to settle for anything less than playing for his favorite school, Kansas State. A few years and a lot of hard work later, Hubert has made those dreams a reality. Hubert is ranked No. 17 in the nation at strong-side defensive end by Rivals and, after landing the scholarship offer he coveted in February, he almost immediately committed to Bill Snyder’s Wildcats, becoming the first member of Kansas State’s 2017 recruiting class. “Probably freshman year is when I realized that I was blessed with the abilities to go far and take them far,’’ Hubert said. “Division I was just the top of the top and that’s what I Hubert, a 6-foot-3, 260-pounder, caught 29 passes for Heights from his tight end position last year. always aimed for. Not surprisingly for a coach whose team won six straight Class 5A district championships, Shawnee Heights football coach Jason Swift didn’t exactly welcome the new Kansas State High School Activities Association rule that eliminated district play for 6A and 5A schools. But Swift knows whether he likes the new system or not, it’s the way things are and it’s up to him and his staff to get the T-Birds prepared for what’s ahead. All 6A and 5A teams will play eight regular-season games and then open the playoffs in week nine, with playoff pairings and host teams being determined by regular-season records. That’s a change from the district system where a district champion always opened with a firstround home game. “Week one’s as important as district this year so we’ve been impressing on them that we need to be ready,’’ said Swift, who is starting his 14th season at Shawnee Heights. “No excuses. Let’s get ourselves ready to go and let’s go play week one. That’s the way we’ve trained this summer. “What it means is that every game is equally important so we have to attack it that way. It’s the state championship every Friday night. You can’t just build towards it, you’ve got to be ready week one.’’ Shawnee Heights posted a 3-7 record last year after reaching the 5A semifinals in 2014 and the T-Birds return a strong nucleus from last year’s team, returning six starters on offense and seven on defense. Heights did suffer a blow over the summer when senior two-way starter Cole Emerson suffered a season-ending knee injury, but Swift was pleased overall with the work ethic his team showed during the offseason. “It was a great offseason,’’ Swift said. “The guys wanted to commit early. As soon as last season got over they wanted to get in the weight room. They wanted to get in some agility work and springboard what we did during the spring all the way into the summer. We had outstanding numbers and it was one of the best years we’ve ever had.’’ Back to help lead the T-Birds is 6-foot-3, 260-pound tight end/defensive end Wyatt Hubert, a first-team All-City pick on defense a year ago. Hubert is ranked by Rivals as the No. 17 strong-side defensive end in the country and he committed to Kansas State in February. Hubert recorded 64 tackles, including 21 for loss and seven sacks last season. He also caught 29 passes for 235 yards and was the All-Centennial League firstteam tight end. Senior Trey Brown (5-10, 170) returns at quarterback for the T-Birds after passing for 883 yards and seven touchdowns and running for 206 yards and eight touchdowns. Other returning offensive starters include junior tight end Tanner Buckley (6-0, 200), junior offensive lineman Cade Holmes (6-4, 270) and senior offensive linemen Keegan Lebahn (6-2, 205) and Jackson Murray (5-9, 200). Defensively Holmes returns at defensive end and Buckley at linebacker, along with senior defensive back Christian Clark (5-11, 185), senior linebacker Gentry Fulks (5-11, 170), junior free safety Michael Hoffer (5-10, 150) and junior linebacker Dane Terry (5-8, 180). Brown, Buckley, Clark and Holmes all received All-City honorable mention last season. “They are kids who had success on Friday nights last year and they know what it takes to get it done,’’ Swift said of his returning group. “They know what it’s like to be successful whether it was when they were sophomores or last year when we won the district championship. Their expectation is, ‘Let’s be ready to go this year.’ “We’ve got to be able to mesh together. In district play you could build up to it and get better every single week. There’s still that measurement of getting better every week, but how quickly can we mesh and how quickly can we be the football team that we think we will be by week nine?’’ Shawnee Heights opens the season on the road Friday night, traveling to Manhattan. The Indians were 5-4 a year ago.

DREW BONES, OTTAWA

DYLAN AESCHLIMAN, HOLTON

JOVON BALDWIN, JUNCTION CITY

6-0, 180 JUNIOR LB/RB Plugged into a starting linebacker role as a sophomore, Aeschliman did not disappoint. Serving as a complement to All-4A pick Mason Barta, Aeschliman ranked second on the Wildcats in tackles with 111, 63 of them solo stops. The junior will also figure into the backfield mix offensively.

TIM BELL, JUNCTION CITY

DILLON BLAIN, WAMEGO

5-11, 198 SENIOR LB/FB Bell ranked fifth on the team in tackles last season with 41, 26 of those solo stops. He also picked off a team-high four passes and scored a pair of defensive touchdowns. He’ll be the leader of the linebacker corps this season and also will see time in the offensive backfield after getting limited action there a year ago.

SAM BURT, ABILENE

6-5, 275 SENIOR OL/DL A three-sport starter for the Cyclones, Bones emerged as a rock for Ottawa’s offensive and defensive lines last year, earning first-team All-Frontier League honors on offense and second-team honors on defense. The MVP of the Illinois State O-line camp this summer, Bones has verbally committed to the Redbirds.

class 4a division i 12-1

1. Miege Stags

2. Blue Valley Tigers

10-3

2. Andale Indians

With two titles in the last three years, Derby has risen from its doldrums to become the top program in 6A. The Tigers handed 4A I champ Miege its only loss last year. A strong defensive push late in the season carried them to the 6A title game.

3. Junction City Blue Jays

10-1

A second-round loss to Derby derailed the Blue Jays’ bid for an undefeated season. A strong returning defense could get the job done this year.

12-1

The Stags are so loaded the loss of two Top 11 picks shouldn’t hamper their bid for a third straight state crown.

9-3

State champs in Division II in 2014 and semifinalists last year, Andale moves up to Division I with a squad capable of reaching the title game.

3. McPherson Bullpups

5-4

A loaded district denied McPherson a playoff berth a year ago, leaving a talented Bullpup squad hungry entering 2016.

4. SM East Lancers

9-2

4. Buhler Crusaders

10-1

5. Free State Firebirds

8-4

5. Abilene Cowboys

9-2

East couldn’t quite make it three straight trips to the 6A title game, but has enough back to make a strong run this year. The Firebirds began last year 0-3. They finished it in the state semifinals, reeling off eight straight wins before falling to Derby.

OTHERS TO WATCH — BV North 8-2, Hutchinson 6-4, Manhattan 5-4, Olathe North 10-2, SM West 7-3, Topeka High 8-2, Wichita Northwest 10-1.

class 5a 1. Carroll Golden Eagles 2. Mill Valley Jaguars

A heartbreaking loss to Hayden ended Buhler’s bid for a second state title in three years. The Crusaders have some big holes to fill on offense.

The Cowboys were two points away from reaching the semifinals a year ago and even with Harley Hazlett gone, the pieces are there for another run. OTHERS TO WATCH — Andover Central 10-3, Atchison 8-1, Augusta 7-3, Independence 7-3, Louisburg 7-3, Maize South 8-3, Paola 9-2, Ulysses 8-2.

class 4 division ii 11-2

A repeat eluded Carroll a year ago after enjoying one of the state’s most dominating seasons in 2014.

12-1

The Jaguars might have been the best team in the state last year, beating 6A champ Derby on its way to the program’s first state title.

1. Holcomb Longhorns

11-2

The Longhorns captured the first state title in program history and will lean heavily on a strong defense to go after a repeat.

2. Hayden Wildcats

10-2

Runner-up in Division I in 2014 and a semifinalist last year, Hayden drops down to Division II for the first time.

3. Aquinas Saints

9-3

3. Wichita Collegiate Spartans 13-1

4. Eisenhower Tigers

7-5

4. Holton Wildcats

No returning offensive starters? No problem. The Saints are loaded enough on defense to move returning starters to offense. The Tigers enjoyed a breakthrough last year, reaching the 5A state semifinals. They have enough talent to go a step or two further this year.

5. Pittsburg Purple Dragons

9-2

Some big holes to fill on offense and a daunting schedule will be big hurdles for the Purple Dragons. OTHERS TO WATCH — Bonner Springs 7-2, Goddard 6-4, Great Bend 7-3, Lansing 6-4, Salina South 5-5, St. James Academy 9-2, Wichita Heights 7-4.

A fourth-quarter rally by Rossville denied Collegiate an undefeated 3A title a year ago. The Spartans move back up to 4A II this year.

9-4

After early-season inconsistencies, Holton put it together to reach the state title game. A loaded district won’t make the road back an easy one.

5. Frontenac Raiders

5-10, 170 SENIOR QB After missing his sophomore season, Wallace stepped in at quarterback last year and ran the Tigers’ flexbone offense efficiently. He finished with just 316 yards and seven touchdowns rushing, but directed a Tiger offense that averaged 225 yards on the ground. He also threw for 481 yards and four scores.

Following are The Topeka Capital-Journal’s preseason rankings for classes 6A, 5A, 4A Division I and 4A Division II (records are from 2015 season):

1. Derby Panthers

5-9, 165 JUNIOR FB Slayden started every game last year as a sophomore, finishing the season with 532 yards rushing, 23 receiving and 206 in the return game. After splitting time with Nick Kirmer at fullback a year ago, Slayden will become the Spartans’ backfield workhorse this season.

KADE WALLACE, CLAY CENTER

6-3, 195 SENIOR QB Trapp easily handled the jump to 6A from 3A last year after moving to Manhattan from Ellsworth. He immediately became the Indians’ best offensive player, rushing for 1,270 yards and 15 TDs and throwing for 825 yards and eight more scores. The strong arm is evident — he placed fourth in the 6A javelin at the State Outdoor.

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL’S RANKINGS class 6a

6-4, 220 SENIOR LB/TE Nordell led the North Central Kansas League with 21 tackles for loss last year and finished as the fifth-leading tackler overall with 90. He will become the quarterback of the defense this year and could be a bigger target in the passing game from his tight end slot. FCS schools South Dakota and Southeast Missouri have already offered.

SAWYER SLAYDEN, EMPORIA

6-3, 275 SENIOR OT A three-year starter on the offensive line for the Indians, Picou has simply been Mr. Consistent for the program. A two-time All-Centennial League pick, Picou’s agility, footwork and leverage should be of no surprise — he’s a three-time state placer in wrestling as well, finishing runner-up at 285 at last year’s 6A state meet.

IAN TRAPP, MANHATTAN

5-10, 175 SENIOR QB/DB Smith was the leader of the Atchison defense last year and his 104 tackles were 25 more than any other Redman. Smith also picked off four passes on his way to All-KCAL honors for the second straight year. A slotback on offense last year, he’ll move to quarterback this season to replace two-time KCAL MVP Wykeen Gill.

6-3, 190 SENIOR DB After leading the Blue Jays in interceptions in 2014, Jones saw his junior season cut short when he broke his leg in Week 8. His production before the injury (32 tackles, 2 interceptions) garnered him first-team All-Centennial League honors. Jones also recovered from his injury to go 22-0 in wrestling and capture the 160-pound 6A state title.

IAN NORDELL, CONCORDIA

6-3, 205 SENIOR QB After starting at quarterback for the Cyclones as a freshman and sophomore, McCullough missed all of last football season with a hip injury. He threw for 1,499 yards and 16 touchdowns and ran for 455 yards and six scores as a sophomore. His future, however, is on the basketball court where’s he’s led Ottawa in scoring all three seasons.

ELDON PICOU, MANHATTAN

6-1, 190 SENIOR LB/RB O’Neal led the Cowboys with 110 tackles last year on his way to first-team All-North Central Kansas League honors. The two-year starter also ran from the fullback spot a year ago, gaining 210 yards and scoring three times, but will probably move to tailback this year and take on an even bigger role in the Cowboy offense.

6-0, 205 SENIOR LB/FB In three years as a starter for the Bulldogs, Howard has spent time at various positions. An All-Frontier League pick on the defensive line last year, making 62 tackles (42 solo), Howard will shift back to linebacker this year. A blocking fullback for a pair of 900-yard rushers last year, Howard will carry a bigger load in the Baldwin offense.

ARYUS JONES, JUNCTION CITY

6-2, 240 JUNIOR OL/DE Johnson developed into one of Tonganoxie’s top defensive players last year as a sophomore, leading the team with nine sacks among his 65 tackles, which ranked second for the Chieftains. He garnered second-team All-Kaw Valley League honors for his performance and this season will also start on the offensive line.

ISAAC MCCULLOUGH, OTTAWA

6-3, 245 SENIOR OL/DL It’s not a coincidence that Holton’s late-season surge last year came about the same time Lenherr returned from injury. Lenherr stabilized both Wildcat lines and keyed Holton’s run to the 4A Division II state championship game. He wound up with 18 tackles in just six games, but his presence is a key for Holton’s success.

6-3, 297 SENIOR OL/DL Hastings has helped restore the physical style that was once a benchmark for the Chargers. A mauler who benches 355 and squats more than 500, Hastings is a two-time All-Pioneer League pick and was a first-team AllClass 4A Division II pick last year. MIAA schools have come calling and Hastings has drawn interest from Kansas.

JUSTIN HOWARD, BALDWIN

6-0, 265 SENIOR OT Carrying on Free State’s tradition of top-notch lineman, Houk was the Firebirds’ best up front a year ago and earned second-team All-Sunflower League honors. Strength is his biggest asset as Houk squats 555 and benches 265. He’ll be the anchor for an offense that will break in almost an entirely new cast of skill players.

LEEROI JOHNSON, TONGANOXIE

5-7, 145 JUNIOR QB/DB Jackson was a rare sophomore two-way starter for the Lions last year, earning honorable mention All-Sunflower League honors on defense. The son of Kansas strength coach Je’Ney Jackson, he’ll take his 4.5 40 speed and put it to use at quarterback this year after playing wide receiver a year ago.

6-0, 175 SENIOR QB/DB Stepping into the starting quarterback job a year ago, Dean led the Tigers to the Class 4A Division II playoffs. The dual-threat finished with more than 1,600 yards of total offense and delivered in the Tigers’ biggest game of the regular season, rushing for 302 yards in a district upset of Royal Valley. He is West’s lone proven skill player.

JAKE HASTINGS, SANTA FE TRAIL

6-2, 285 SENIOR DL/OL A two-time first-team All-KCAL selection, Haley was a stalwart for the Redmen defensively. Haley got to the quarterback for 13 sacks and finished with 64 tackles. With Atchison having to fill some holes on the offensive line, Haley will be pushed into double duty this season. He’s drawing attention from Division I and II schools.

CHASE HOUK, FREE STATE

6-2, 205 SENIOR LB/QB A first-team All-North Central Kansas League pick at linebacker last year after making 65 tackles in just seven games, Hettenbach will take on a bigger role in the Irish offense this season. The multi-sport athlete will move into the starting quarterback job as Chapman looks to fill some big holes in its backfield.

6-3, 185 SENIOR QB/FS Blain stepped into the quarterback job on a full-time basis last year and flourished, throwing for 1,666 yards and 17 touchdowns in leading the Red Raiders to the second round of the playoffs. His best sport might be basketball, where he averaged 21.5 points as a junior and is drawing Division I interest as a shooting guard.

HUNTER DEAN, JEFFERSON WEST

6-5, 235 SENIOR OT/DE A three-year starter for the Cowboys, Burt was an All-North Central Kansas League pick as a junior. He made 73 tackles and had four sacks last year and is drawing interest from Division I and II schools going into his senior season.

DAI COYE HALEY, ATCHISON

6-2, 225 SENIOR LB/OG The younger brother of former All-Stater and current Kansas linebacker Joe Dineen, Jay will follow in his family’s footsteps and play for KU in college — the fifth generation of his family to do so. Dineen formed a strong 1-2 linebacker punch with All-6A pick Sam Skwarlo a year ago, making 91 tackles.

5-11, 190 SENIOR RB Baldwin averaged of 14.2 yards for every touch a year ago. The speedy back who earned a Tulane offer over the summer led the Blue Jays in receiving with 607 yards on 38 catches out of the backfield. He’ll take over as the Jays’ feature back this year after rushing for 736 yards last year and also starting as a sophomore.

7-4

The return of standout quarterback Brandon Mlekus and a strong supporting cast make the Raiders more than capable of a deep run OTHERS TO WATCH — Columbus 11-1, Concordia 6-4, Hugoton 5-6, Santa Fe Trail 6-5, Scott City 10-1.a

Sept. 16 For a change, Holton will be the hunter instead of the hunted in the Big Seven League. When Nemaha Central toppled the Wildcats 27-13 midway through last season, it ended Holton’s 48-game league winning streak as well as their seven-year reign as league champions. The Thunder went on to post an undefeated regular season and win the league crown, while Holton rebounded from the loss to reach the 4A Division II state championship game.

MANHATTAN AT JUNCTION CITY Oct. 7 Last year’s clash between the long-time rivals just goes to show how nothing can be taken for granted in rivalry games. Manhattan endured somewhat of a down year last season, going just 5-4. Junction City was dominating for much of the season, going 10-1. Yet when they met in week six last year, Junction City had to claw and scratch for a 17-14 overtime victory over the Indians. Both have high expectations for 2016, making this year’s clash a potential doozy.

WAMEGO AT ABILENE Oct. 14 Wamego won back-to-back North Central Kansas League titles in 2012 and 2013. Abilene dethroned the Red Raiders in 2014 and won its second straight league crown last year. Not only could this year’s showdown be for the league title, but has arguably even bigger implications as the Class 4A Division I District 8 opener. The winner gets a leg up in one of the toughest districts in 4A-I, while the loser faces an uphill battle to make the playoffs.

PAOLA AT OTTAWA oct. 14 Ottawa could very well have the best team it’s fielded in years, returning most of last year’s squad and getting standout quarterback Isaac McCullough back after he missed last season with an injury. The Cyclones’ reward? A district loaded with programs who are fixtures in the postseason — Paola, Louisburg and Fort Scott, all of whom were playoff teams last year. If Ottawa wants to take make a statement this year, beating Paola in the district opener will go a long ways toward doing just that.

KC PIPER AT ATCHISON Oct. 28 Coming off a narrow 25-20 win over Basehor-Linwood in week eight a year ago, Atchison was on the verge of posting an undefeated regular season and returning to the Class 4A playoffs. All the Redmen had to do to make the postseason was beat sub-.500 KC Piper in the finale, or lose by less than 11. Instead, the Pirates knocked off Atchison 38-21 and an 8-1 season wasn’t good enough to get Atchison into the playoffs.

25 ARE A STARS [3A , 2-1 A , 8-MAN]

WORTH A LOOK

DALTON DULTMEIER, SILVER LAKE

The Topeka Capital-Journal | Thursday, September 1, 2016 | 5C

JACOB BOX, ROYAL VALLEY

JOSH BOYD, SILVER LAKE 5-10, 190 JUNIOR LB Given his last name, it’s no surprise Boyd led Silver Lake’s defense in tackles last year, finishing with 78 solo and 44 assists. Older brothers Jeremy and Zack were also standout linebackers and Josh is as hard-hitting as his siblings, adding 14 tackles for loss. Boyd was a first-team All-Mid-East League selection.

JACOB BRADSHAW, ROSSVILLE

WILL BRUNA, HANOVER

6-0, 169 SENIOR QB/DB Bradshaw did a little bit of everything for the Bulldawgs last year, finishing with a combined 932 rushing, receiving and passing yards and 11 touchdowns, while also picking off five passes for the defense. All eyes will be on Bradshaw as a senior as he has the huge task of taking over at QB for departed two-time All-Stater Tucker Horak.

DAWSON HAMMES, ROSSVILLE

5-8, 175 SENIOR RB/LB/DB An All-Eight-Man Division II first-teamer a year ago, Fowler made things happen whenever he was on the field. Accounting for more than 1,600 combined rushing and receiving yards, Fowler averaged nearly 8 yards per carry and 15 yards per catch, scoring 30 touchdowns. Fowler also led the Jaguars in tackles.

RYAN HASENKAMP, NEMAHA CENTRAL

6-1, 197 SENIOR LB/RB Son of Rossville coach Derick Hammes, Dawson has more than made a name for himself as a starter for both of the Bulldawg championship squads. Hammes led the Rossville defense with 159 tackles last year and established himself in the offensive backfield as well, rushing for 1,111 yards and 10 touchdowns.

HUNTER KIER, WASHINGTON COUNTY 6-0, 200 SENIOR RB/LB Kier was a huge reason Washington County posted the best season in program history, becoming a dominant force on both sides of the ball. He finished the season with a school-record 1,460 yards rushing and tied the school record with 19 touchdowns. Defensively, he led the Tigers with 89 tackles.

GREG MARTIN, MARYSVILLE

6-0, 180 SENIOR QB/FS A driving force behind Nemaha Central’s 10-1 season last year, Hasenkamp built on the success he began when he took over as the Thunder’s starting QB midway through his sophomore season. As a junior, Hasenkamp was a firstteam All-Big Seven League pick, throwing for 1,545 yards and 15 TDs, while also rushing for 567 yards and 12 scores.

DANEN KISTNER, HARTFORD

TRYSTAN PRINGLE, LYNDON

WIL SMITH, TROY

MITCHELL WERTZBERGER, WABAUNSEE

6-2, 175 JUNIOR WR/DB The Jefferson North passing game was in good hands a year ago with the emergence of Summers as a go-to receiver as a sophomore. He hauled in 38 catches for 703 yards, averaging 18.9 yards per catch. He was able to find the end zone once he got the ball, too, scoring 11 times, or nearly once every three catches.

6-1, 200 SENIOR LB/OL One of the most complete players Wabaunsee has produced, Wertzberger showed his versatility last year, moving from fullback to guard and helped the Charger offensive production more than double. His forte is defensively, where he’s a two-time first-team All-Mid-East League pick and has 217 career tackles, 89 last year.

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL’S RANKINGS 14-0

1. Spearville Lancers

13-0

2. Norton Bluejays

9-3

2. St. Francis Indians

10-1

3. Silver Lake Eagles

9-2

3. Burlingame Bearcats

11-1

4. Victoria Knights

12-0

Keeping Jace Ruder healthy is a key for a Norton squad which could be ready to get back to the state finals for the first time since 1989.

The Eagles are hungry after getting bounced from the playoffs in the first weekend — just the second time in 14 years they didn’t reach the semifinals.

4. Hoisington Cardinals

11-1

Hunter Hanzlick is the leading returning rusher in the state. The Cardinals have plenty to go with him, too.

5. Phillipsburg Panthers

11-2

The Panthers captured the program’s first state title a year ago. That came in 2-1A, but Phillipsburg has enough back to make a run in 3A as well.

The Lancers may not be as loaded as last year’s dominating title team, but enough parts return to go after a repeat. The Indians pitched five shutouts last year. But its the offensive firepower that returns that makes them a popular pick to dethrone Spearville. Even though they fell short of the state title game, 2015 was a dream season for the Bearcats. Making it a step further is a distinct reality.

Winners of two straight Division II state titles, Victoria moves up to Division I this year and is eager to prove it’s capable of winning it all there, too.

5. West Elk Patriots

10-1

Wisconsin signee Isaiahh Loudermilk may be gone, but the Patriots have enough talent back to continue its emergence as an eight-man contender.

OTHERS TO WATCH — Galena 7-4, Garden Plain 9-2, Halstead 12-1, Hesston 8-2, Neodesha 9-2, Nemaha Central 10-1, SE-Saline 7-3, Wellsville 10-3.

OTHERS TO WATCH — Argonia-Attica 12-1, Central Plains 9-2, Osborne 4-5, Rural Vista 7-3, Sedan 5-4, Solomon 10-2, South Central 8-2.

class 2-1a

eight-man division iI

1. Troy Trojans

10-2

A two-point conversion away from capturing the 2-1A state title a year ago, Troy hopes to ride the likes of Cuttar Huss and Wil Smith back to Hays.

1. Hanover Wildcats

Sept. 9 A 54-6 rout of Hartford in the 2015 season opener served as a springboard for arguably the best season in Burlingame history. The Bearcats rode the momentum of the victory to an undefeated regular season and Lyon County League title and wound up finishing 11-1, reaching the state Eight-Man Division I semifinals. Hartford rebounded from the loss to make the Division II playoffs. Both return key figures from last year’s team and the week two clash should be for the league title.

SILVER LAKE AT ROSSVILLE Sept. 30 There’s no better rivalry in the state than the War on 24 showdown, particularly when both teams are among the elite in Class 3A. After years of dominating the rivalry, Silver Lake has lost three of the last four games with Rossville as the Bulldawgs have rolled to two straight undefeated Class 3A state championships. No longer a district clash, the game will certainly have Mid-East League implications and after meeting only once last year, they could be on a collision course for another state semifinal showdown this year.

WASHINGTON COUNTY AT TROY

5. Hodgeman Co. Longhorns

8-2

4. Colgan Panthers

9-3

OTHERS TO WATCH — Centralia 5-5, Jackson Heights 8-2, Lyndon 8-3, Oakley 7-4, Olpe 9-3, Sacred Heart 5-5.

BURLINGAME AT HARTFORD

ROYAL VALLEY AT PERRY-LECOMPTON

3. Sharon Springs Wildcats

10-1

Sept. 9 The Flint Hills League rivals met twice a year ago. Mission Valley won the first meeting 26-20 — a victory that earned the Vikings a share of the league title along with Council Grove and Lyndon. Both also qualified for the Class 2-1A playoffs and earned a rematch in the first round. This time, Lyndon got revenge with a 48-32 victory.

6-3

10-1

Like Colgan, Washington drops down from 3A after posting the best season in program history last year.

6-3, 195, SENIOR, LB/OL Hanover’s leading tackler as a sophomore, Zarybnicky followed with another big season as a junior. After making 92 tackles as a sophomore, he jumped up to 115 as a junior, 75 of those solo stops. A late-season injury kept Zarybnicky from playing in the state title game and his absence was felt as Hanover gave up 62 points to Spearville.

4. Beloit-St. John’s Blujays

3. Meade Buffaloes

5. Washington County Tigers

ADAM ZARYBNICKY, HANOVER

It was an emotional end to last year for the Wildcats. Few programs can match their consistency over the past decade.

2. Otis-Bison Cougars

After two years in 3A, the Panthers drop back down to 2-1A and despite having big holes to fill will be a contender.

5-8, 175 SENIOR RB/S A two-time first-team All-Mid-East League selection, Staten logged his second straight 1,000-yard season last year, finishing the season with 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, he added 43 tackles and picked off two passes.

Oct. 14 Washington County downed Troy 36-18 in last year’s season opener on its way to the best season in program history as the Tigers went undefeated in the regular season and won its first-ever playoff game, finishing 10-1. Troy rebounded from the loss quite nicely, not losing again until the Class 2-1A state championship game. With Washington County back in 2-1A after two years in 3A, the Twin Valley League rivals are among the top contenders in the east and though they find themselves in different districts, the late-season clash will be a big momentum boost for the winner.

10-2

Standout quarterback Lawson Luetters nearly got Meade back to the title game last year and hopes to deliver this season.

12-1

Runner-up in Division I the past two seasons, Hanover drops down and will be tough to beat with record-setting QB Will Bruna back.

2. Smith Center Redmen

The Redmen haven’t been back to the title game since going six straight years from 2004-09. The drought could end this year.

6-5, 240 SENIOR TE/DL A three-year starter both ways, Renyer is about as wellrounded as they come — from ranking No. 1 in his class, serving as student council president and lead in every school play to being state-qualifier in track and basketball. Renyer has recorded at least 50 tackles each of the last two seasons and is getting in-state Division I interest.

LYNDON AT MISSION VALLEY

eight-man division i

Can the Bulldawgs pull off the three-peat without All-State QB Tucker Horak? Enough talent returns to make it a strong possibility.

6-0, 178 SENIOR QB/DB Mission Valley had a big hole to fill at quarterback entering the 2015 season and Phillips was up to the task, doubling his rushing total from his sophomore season. He finished with 1,177 yards and 15 TDs and also threw for 738 yards and 9 TDs in leading the Vikings to a 7-3 record, share of the Flint Hills League title and the playoffs.

five area games worth a look

Following are The Topeka Capital-Journal’s preseason rankings for classes 3A, 2-1A, 8-Man Division I and 8-Man Division II (records are from 2015 season):

1. Rossville Bulldawgs

5-9, 225, SENIOR DE/OG One half of Burlingame’s set of standout bookend DEs, Lee didn’t let a midseason ankle injury slow him. He missed only one game and finished with 105 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Lee was a first-team All-Lyon County League both ways of the ball and helped pave the way for the most prolific offense in Burlingame history.

GARRETT STATEN, RILEY COUNTY

5-9, 165 JUNIOR QB/DB If Burlingame coach Jeff Slater had any reservations about handing a senior-laden team over to a sophomore QB, Sporing eased them. Sporing turned in a prolific offensive season, throwing for 1,877 yards and 32 TDs and also running for 632 yards and 14 scores in leading Burlingame to the Eight-Man I state semifinals.

BRAYDEN SUMMERS, JEFFERSON NORTH

class 3a

6-0, 170 SENIOR WR/FS A dynamic playmaker, Huss took things up another level last year as a junior in leading Troy to a runner-up finish in Class 2-1A. On 107 offensive touches, Huss racked up 751 yards and 10 TDs receiving and 717 yards and 11 TDs rushing. The ball found him defensively, too, as Huss came up with nine interceptions, returning three for TDs.

ERIC RENYER, SABETHA

5-9, 175 SENIOR RB/NG/DE After serving as a solid backfield complement on Olpe’s 2014 state championship team, Redeker more than handled the role as the Eagle feature back last year, rushing for 1,276 yards and 18 touchdowns. Defensively, he was in on 50 tackles and had four sacks, rotating several positions along the defensive line.

DALTON SPORING, BURLINGAME

6-2, 210 SENIOR DE/RG Smith emerged as a dominating force on both sides of the ball in 2015, helping Troy to the first state championship game in program history. A two-way first-team AllTwin Valley League pick and first-team All 2-1A defensive lineman, Smith led the Trojans with 82 tackles, including 6.5 sacks and blocked five punts.

CUTTAR HUSS, TROY

CLAY PHILLIPS, MISSION VALLEY

6-2, 230 SENIOR MLB/RB In his first year in a starting role, Olivero thrived at the middle linebacker spot and led the Cyclones with 101 tackles (72 solo) and 14 tackles for loss on his way to firstteam All-Big Seven League honors. After rotating between fullback, slotback and tight end, Olivero will become the offensive workhorse after running for 694 yards last year.

DYLAN REDEKER, OLPE

6-1, 225 SENIOR OL/DL With Lyndon having to replace virtually its entire offensive and defensive lines from the 9-2 2014 squad, Pringle’s emergence as first-year starter was a huge key to the Tigers’ 8-3 mark last year. He was a unanimous All-Flint Hills League pick both ways and a major force defensively, making 101 tackles with 15 tackles for loss and six sacks.

5-1, 170 SENIOR RB/LB/S In a backfield filled with weapons, Hamilton became the Cobras’ go-to back last year. The result was a teamhigh 970 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and first-team All-Northeast Kansas League honors. Expectations are for the two-way starter to have an even bigger season this year.

TRISTAN LEE, BURLINGAME

6-1, 205 SENIOR QB/LB/DB As a transfer from Waverly a year ago, Kistner had no trouble fitting right into the Jaguar offense and leading the program to its first playoff berth since 2002. Kistner threw for 1,157 yards and 20 touchdowns — eight coming in win over Marais des Cygnes Valley — and also ran for 642 yards and 10 scores.

GAIGE OLIVERO, RIVERSIDE

6-2, 300 SENIOR OL/DL Martin played a big role, literally, in Marysville’s turnaround season a year ago. The massive lineman who is getting interest from Division II, NAIA and juco schools was a first-team All-North Central Kansas League pick both ways. He’s a weight-room junkie with maxes of 535 in the squat, 310 bench and 335 clean.

6-0, 170 SENIOR QB/DB Safe to say, Bruna was the right choice to step in and take over at QB for Hanover last year. All he did was smash state records for passing, completing a scorching 75.4 percent of his passes for a state-record 3,452 yards and eye-popping 56 touchdowns. For good measure, he also led the Wildcats in rushing with 646 yards and 18 scores.

MASON HAMILTON, JACKSON HEIGHTS

CLAYTON FOWLER, HARTFORD

5-8, 140 SENIOR QB Dultmeier didn’t start the 2015 season as Silver Lake’s starting QB. But when Cole Baird suffered an injury, Dultmeier stepped in and didn’t give the job back. He finished the season with 2,172 yards and 24 TDs passing and also ran for 491 yards and eight TDs. A standout wrestler as well, Dultmeier has two top-three state finishes.

6-2, 220 SENIOR OL/DE A three-year starter both ways, Box will be the anchor for the Panthers up front as they rebuild after graduation hit hard. Box was an honorable mention All-Big Seven League pick defensively last year after making 46 tackles. He’s state qualifier in wrestling and track as well.

8-2

The only losses for the Cougars last year came to eventual champion Victoria and Sharon Springs. A loaded offense can carry them a long way.

11-1

Injuries and a loaded district hampered the Blujays last year. All but one player is back and QB Davis Dubbert is one of eight-man’s best.

Also dropping from Division I, the Longhorns’ only losses last year came to champion Spearville and one-loss St. Francis.

OTHERS TO WATCH — Caldwell 5-6, Chase 9-1, Hartford 6-3, Minneola 7-3, Pike Valley 8-3, South Barber 6-3.a

Oct. 14 When the Big Seven League rivals met a year ago, it was in their Class 4A Division II district opener and Royal Valley took a 35-21 victory. Both teams make the drop to Class 3A this year and once again find themselves in the same district. With perennial power Silver Lake also in the same district, the winner of the game this year has an inside track to one of the playoff berths, while the other must knock off the Eagles to have a shot at the postseason.

STATE STARS

WORTH A LOOK

ANGEL DOMINGUEZ, AQUINAS

JAFAR ARMSTRONG, MIEGE

BEN ADLER, WICHITA TRINITY 6-5, 290 SENIOR OL/DL A stalwart on both Trinity lines since his arrival, Adler has the frame college coaches drool over. Sure enough, he’s already committed to Kansas State. The package goes beyond just his size with his combination of great hips, feet, strength, hands and speed helping him become a first-team All-4A Division II pick last year.

SIMON BRADLEY, SM EAST

HARRISON CREED, ULYSSES

5-11, 220 SENIOR LB The only underclassman to earn first-team AllSunflower League honors a year ago, Bradley provides the physical, nasty presence for the SM East defense. Last season, Bradley had 80 tackles and 12 tackles for loss for a defense which posted three shutouts.

JACOB GREEN, NORTON

6-4, 195 SENIOR QB/LB After shining for Beloit-St. John’s at receiver as a sophomore, Dubbert moved under center as a junior to replace his older brother, Trey, as the Bluejays’ quarterback. It was a seamless transition as Dubbert threw for 1,393 yards and 26 touchdowns, completing 54 percent of his passes. He also had 63 tackles after making 85 as a sophomore.

COLIN GRUNHARD, MIEGE

6-2, 230 SENIOR OL/DL/LB An impact lineman from the moment he hit high school, Green earned first-team All-3A honors as a sophomore. He repeated as an All-3A pick last year and over the past two seasons has a combined 57 tackles for loss. He will serve as the anchor for both lines and his athleticism could allow him to see time at linebacker as well.

PETER KLUG, BLUE VALLEY NORTH

DALLIN MARLNEE, AUGUSTA

Dominating in 2014, Carroll couldn’t quite pull off the 5A repeat last year, falling to Mill Valley in the title game. But the list of title contenders in 5A always starts with the Golden Eagles.

The Jaguars delivered on high expectations, capturing the program’s first state title and beating 6A champ Derby along the way. Graduation losses were significant, but Mill Valley is ready to prove its staying power.

3. Blue Valley Tigers

10-3

8. Free State Firebirds

8-4

4. Junction City Blue Jays

10-1

9. Aquinas Saints

9-3

A defense led by returning linebacker Michael Maffry keyed the Tigers’ run to the 6A title game a year ago. There’s plenty of offense back as well to keep Blue Valley in the hunt. The Blue Jays may have lost All-6A back Raye Wilson, but Jovon Baldwin looks ready to become an offensive star and Junction City’s defense is loaded.

5. SM East Lancers

9-2

After two straight trips to the 6A title game, East was bounced early from the playoffs a year ago. The 2014 champs might be the team to beat in the east.

An 0-3 start last year raised some eyebrows. But when the dust settled, Free State once again found itself in the 6A state semifinals for the fifth time in the last 10 years.

Aquinas doesn’t return a single offensive starter from last year’s semifinal squad. For most programs, that’s a problem. But with a stout defense and Coach Randy Dreiling, the Saints should reload.

10. Eisenhower Tigers

DILLON WILLIAMS, HOLCOMB 6-0, 222 SENIOR LB/RB Williams was the undeniable leader of a dominant Holcomb defense that shut out Holton in last year’s title game, leading the Longhorns with 145 tackles (92 solo) on his way to first-team All-4A Division II honors. As a sophomore, he had 128 tackles (73 solo). He also led Holcomb with 899 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns.

MIEGE AT BLUE VALLEY

1. Miege Stags

With a trio of Division I prospects in Peerlus Walker, Kenyon Tabor and Kai Lemons, Derby has enough talent to after a repeat in 6A and its third title in four years.

6-1, 250 SENIOR DL Usher-Pearson was having a dominant junior season before missing Independence’s regular-season finale and playoff game with a torn ACL. He recorded 68 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 6 sacks and was a first-team All-Southeast Kansas and All-4A Division I selection. Usher-Pearson has fully recovered from the injury.

five state games worth a look

Following is The Topeka Capital-Journal’s preseason ranking of the state’s top 10 teams, regardless of classification (records are from 2015 season): Winner of two straight 4A Division I titles, Miege must replace All-Staters Dawson Downing and Kaelin Key and is well-equipped to do just that with the likes of Jafar Armstrong, Collin Grunhard and Carter Putz back.

6-6, 330 SENIOR OG A three-star recruit who committed to Kansas State over the summer, Rivas has the agility to get out in the open field and demolish would-be tacklers. A tackle, Rivas could move to guard in college. Rivas was a sophomore starter for Hutchinson’s 2014 6A runner-up squad and helped the offense average 33 points last year.

PEYTON USHER-PEARSON, INDEPENDENCE

6-4, 215 SENIOR WR/TE One of the top-rated recruits in the state, Tabor has verbally committed to Kansas. He was Derby’s leading receiver in yards and catches last year, helping the Panthers capture the Class 6A state title and earning first-team All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail I League honors.

SAMMY WHEELER, ST. JAMES ACADEMY

6-1, 265 SENIOR DE The leader of Derby’s defensive line during its state championship run a year ago, Walker recorded 61 tackles and had 14 tackles for loss on his way to being named the defensive MVP of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail I League. A top-22 selection and first-team All-Class 6A pick, Walker is one of the top defensive recruits in the state.

6-1, 216 SENIOR LB Despite suffering a broken hand and compound dislocation of a finger in consecutive weeks, Maffry didn’t miss a game last year and finished as one of the top tacklers in the state, spearheading a defense that keyed the Tigers’ run to the 6A title game. Maffry finished with 172 total tackles, 100 of them solo, and was a first-team All-5A pick.

JOSH RIVAS, HUTCHINSON

6-0, 175 SENIOR WR/RB/S Murray was a jack of all trades for the Trojans as a junior, lining up at just about every skill position on the field. He finished the year with 53 catches for 780 yards and 7 TDs, while also rushing for 470 yards and 8 scores. A two-way first-team All-NCAA pick, Murray also had 63 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries.

KENYON TABOR, DERBY

6-3, 205 JUNIOR QB/DB Ruder had an immediate impact as a freshman, earning the starting QB job. Though that season was cut short by injury, Ruder bounced back and enjoyed a solid sophomore year when he threw for 1,407 yards and 11 TDs and ran for 384 yards. Already getting Division I offers from the likes of Kansas State, Toledo and Tulsa, among others.

6-3, 267 SENIOR OT On a Blue Valley offense loaded with talent, Kirby stood out from his tackle spot and helped the Tigers amass more than 5,000 yards of total offense in rolling to the 6A championship game. The first-team All-5A and All-Eastern Kansas League pick has turned heads at the FBS and FCS level, getting an early offer from Air Force.

MICHAEL MAFFRY, BLUE VALLEY

6-2 285 SENIOR, OL/DL A selection for the Blue-Gray All-American Bowl, Linn earned defensive MVP honors at their combine over the summer. Linn has earned first-team All-Tri-Valley League honors for multiple seasons, including both ways last year on his way to All-3A honors. He made 12 tackles for loss and finished with 61 total along with five sacks last year.

BEN MURRAY, SE-SALINE

6-4, 215 SENIOR LB Combining instincts with physicality, Marlnee became a big presence on the Augusta defense, leading the Orioles to their best season in recent years. He led the team in tackles with 89 on his way to All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail IV and All-4A honors. Division I schools have taken notice and Marlnee already has an offer from Wyoming.

5-11, 195 SENIOR RB/OLB No returning player in the state ran for more yards than Hanzlick a year ago in leading Hoisington to a 11-1 record. He rushed for 1,950 yards and 30 TDs to earn first-team All-3A honors. As a sophomore, Hanzlick ran for 1,381 yards and 21 scores, giving him a great shot at joining the state’s 5,000-yard club this year.

KIRRIAN KIRBY, BLUE VALLEY

6-5, 250 SENIOR TE/DE The top-rated recruit in Kansas by Rivals.com who already has committed to Northwestern, Kent will become a four-year starter at defensive end. Last year, he made 36 tackles and had three sacks while recording 12 hurries. Though not a target in the passing game from his tight end spot, Kent is a dominant run-blocker on the edge.

JORDAN LINN, NEODESHA

6-5, 255 SENIOR DL/OL After garnering a lot of Division I interest in the offseason, the pre-med major committed to South Dakota State. Klug earned All-Eastern Kansas League honors at defensive end last season, recording 72 tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Klug will also slide over to the offensive side of the ball at times.

6-4, 295 SENIOR OL/DL A tenacious run-blocker who plays through the whistle, Gilbertson was a big reason Wichita Northwest set a state record for yards per game (538) and averaged 49 points during the best season in program history. The first-team All-Class 6A pick has verbally committed to Kansas and will serve as the anchor for the offensive line.

HUNTER HANZLICK, HOISINGTON

6-1, 270 SENIOR C/DT The son of former Kansas City Chief Tim Grunhard, Colin has started at center for four years for the Stags, serving as a keystone for two state championship teams. The first-team All-Class 4A pick has offers from the likes of Air Force, Colgate and Northwest Missouri and is drawing interest from FBS champion North Dakota State.

TREVOR KENT, PITTSBURG

5-8, 160 SENIOR RB/CB Heskamp helped the Lancers to their first state championship last fall. In his career, Heskamp has averaged 10.5 yards per carry, racking up 3,124 yards and 56 touchdowns — 1,468 yards and 30 TDs coming last year. The first-team All-Eight Man Division I back could post bigger numbers this year as the team’s main returning offensive threat.

6-6, 320 SENIOR OT Not only did Kansas State like what it saw when it signed former Ulysses All-Stater Ian Rudzik, they thought pretty highly of his teammate as well. Creed’s frame left recruiters drooling. The first-team All-Great Western Activities Conference lineman runs well for his size and his long arms produce great strength and leverage.

JOEY GILBERTSON, WICH. northwest

DAVIS DUBBERT, BELOIT-ST. JOHN’S

6-4, 270 SENIOR DL A rare four-year starter for Aquinas, Dominguez has earned All-Eastern Kansas League honors of some kind each of his first three seasons, including first team last year. He made 40 tackles, including 10 for loss and five sacks to earn first-team All-5A selection. A team captain, Dominguez has committed to Iowa State.

6-1, 205 SENIOR WR Armstrong is poised to finish his career as one of the state’s all-time great receivers. After leading the Stags in receiving as a sophomore (53 catches, 1,205 yards, 9 TDs), Armstrong was even better as a junior with 65 catches for 1,262 yards and 15 TDs. The first-team All-4A pick will take his skills to Missouri.

7-5

The Tigers took a big step forward last year, reaching the 5A semifinals before losing to perennial power Carroll. They’re eager to back up their breakthrough season.

Sept. 2 One game separates Miege from entering the 2016 season riding a 26game winning streak. The only loss in that span? Last year’s 42-35 defeat at the hands of Eastern Kansas League rival Blue Valley. Miege is the two-time reigning Class 4A Division I champion, while Blue Valley finished runner-up in Class 6A a year ago. The Tigers have more holes to fill than the Stags and the season-opener will show whether they are capable of making another deep postseason run, and if Miege is indeed the best overall team in the state.

SHARON SPRINGS AT ST. FRANCIS Sept. 2 With 12 of the top 16 players returning off last year’s 10-1 team, St. Francis believes it has the makings of being a contender for the Eight-Man Division I title. What better way then to start the 2016 season than with a test against Sharon Springs, a program that year-in, year-out ranks among the best in Division II and is coming off an emotionally-charged 11-1 season.

WICH. COLLEGIATE AT HOISINGTON Sept. 9 Former league rivals in the now-defunct MCAA League, Collegiate and Hoisington combined to go 24-2 in Class 3A last year with Collegiate finishing runner-up after a loss to Rossville in the title game. Though the Spartans have moved up to Class 4A Division II, the showdown with Hoisington is big for both. Collegiate has holes to fill to be a contender in its new class, while Hoisington appears poised to make a serious run at the 3A title this year with the likes of Hunter Hanzlick and Landon Urban back off last year’s 11-1 squad.

DERBY AT CARROLL Sept. 30 It’s not often the two powerhouse programs in the Wichita area get together on the gridiron, so a clash between Carroll and Derby is one people have wanted to see for a long time. Derby is the reigning Class 6A champion and has won two of the last three 6A crowns. Carroll was runner-up in 5A last year after enjoying one of the most dominant seasons in state history in 2014. Both are more than capable of finishing the year as state champions this year.

PHILLIPSBURG AT NORTON

2015 file photograph/the capital-journal

After helping Hayden to a 10-2 record and a berth in the Class 4A Division I semifinals a year ago, quarterback Dallas Crittenden transferred to Free State and is expected to direct the Firebirds’ attack this season.

Oct. 21 Phillipsburg lost only twice on its way to capturing the Class 2-1A state title — the program’s first state crown. One of those defeats was a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to Norton in the second week of the season. Phillipsburg is back in 3A this year and returns a bulk of its title squad, but finds itself in the same district at Mid-Continent League rival Norton, which is loaded as well. The winner will get a big boost in its bid for the 3A title.

Numbers low, but hopes remain high All-City defensive lineman Heit returns to lead Hayden, but depth a ‘huge concern’ for perennial power By Rick Peterson

rick.peterson@cjonline.com

Hayden football coach Bill Arnold won’t use it as an excuse, but he is definitely concerned about the Wildcats’ low numbers as he begins his 10th year at the school. The Wildcats were 10-2 a year ago and reached the Class 4A Division I semifinals, but Hayden’s roster was right around the 50 mark (freshmen through seniors) when Hayden reported for preseason practice on Aug. 15. “That’s a huge concern because we’ve only got 47 kids out here,’’ Arnold said. “You can only play 11 at a time, but the reality of it is if somebody goes down what have you got to fill in for them? That is a big concern because instead of having a legitimate backup at that spot now you may have to move A to take B’s place and then you’ve got to put C in somewhere where they normally wouldn’t be. “You really have to do a lot of extra teaching out here because kids have to learn more than one position on each side of the ball.’’ There are likely a variety of reasons for why participation numbers at Hayden and many other schools are down, but Arnold thinks one of those reasons is because players/parents are concerned about injuries, particularly concussions and head injuries. However, Arnold, 142-44 as a head coach, believes a lot of things are being done to keep players safe. “Football’s a safe sport and I do believe that as coaches across the board, in conjunction with USA Football, we’ve done a great job of cleaning stuff up even more,’’ he said. “We’ve put a huge emphasis on how we tackle with heads-up tackling and the state has gotten on board with limiting the way you practice now and how many times you can actually have live contact going on and stuff. “I think the NFL has given us some resources that we didn’t have before and USA Football has done a great job. I still believe it has to be a physical game, but

Hayden fullback Tomas Stringer, left, and tight end Scott Wilson go through drills during preseason practice. Stringer and Wilson are among four key offensive returners the Wildcats will count on for production this season. there are some safety elements that I’ve made a conscientious effort to apply.’’ While Arnold’s overall numbers are lower than at any other time in his decade at Hayden, he and his staff still have their usual lofty expectations for the Wildcats this fall. “It’s not going to change,’’ Arnold said. “We had our senior meeting (recently) and when you’ve been somewhere 10 years they know what our team’s goals are every year. Nothing’s going to change. The goals are a league title, a district title and the state championship. It has to go in that order and it goes one game at a time.’’

The Wildcats graduated AllCity Top 11 picks Brooks Peavler, Connor Schumacher and Will Stringer off last year’s team, and last year’s starting quarterback, Dallas Crittenden, transferred to Free State. But Hayden returns several key players, led by defensive lineman Jake Heit, a 5-foot-9, 210-pound senior, who was an All-City Top 11 pick a year ago when he was in on 105 tackles, including eight sacks. Other top returners on defense include senior linebacker AJ Shaw (5-9, 180), junior linebacker Brent Peavler (6-3, 210) and senior defensive back Andrew Smith (5-9, 165).

Shaw was in on 111 tackles last season while Peavler was in on 64 stops and Smith 49 tackles with two interceptions. Offensively the Wildcats return senior lineman Keenan Flynn (6-1, 230), senior running back Connor Hobart (5-11, 180), senior fullback Tomas Stringer (5-10, 205) and senior tight end Scott Wilson (6-3, 205). Hobart rushed for 498 yards and six touchdowns last season while Stringer rushed for 316 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Wilson caught 10 passes for 127 yards last fall, scoring three touchdowns. “We’ve got some quality players out here and we’re going to

put a good product on the field that’s going to compete,’’ Arnold said. The Wildcats open their season at home Friday against Topeka High, 8-2 last season and a 6A playoff participant.

Kraft sees positive signs despite winless first year

‘‘

Highland Park coach’s message: ‘Go hard in everything you do’

If people expect us to all of a sudden be contenders in a year or two they’re mistaken. We’ve got a step and a process for the future that we’re aiming at.”

By Rick Peterson

rick.peterson@cjonline.com

The hill facing Highland Park’s football team is still steep. But Scots coach Faron Kraft, whose team was 0-9 in his first season at the school, believes Highland Park is taking steps in the right direction. “I thought we made progress last year, even though the wins and losses didn’t show that,’’ Kraft said. “Having a chance in three or four games to win, that was a big upside for us.’’ Kraft was pleased overall with the Scots’ work in the offseason, but overall numbers continue to be a concern, with Highland Park’s varsity roster listing 31 players for the start of the season. “We had a good summer,’’ Kraft said. “We had quite a few kids come in this summer in the weight room and got to a team camp and did some things like that, but we’ve still got to work on numbers. We‘ve got to find a way to get kids out and get them involved and keep them out.’’ The Scots return some experienced players on both sides of the ball, but some players that Kraft was counting on opted not to go out this fall. Top returners on offense include senior tight end Jaime Fernandez, senior offensive linemen

JAKE GATCHELL/ SPECIAL TO THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

Second-year Highland Park coach Faron Kraft admits the Scots’ rebuilding process will “take a while,” but Kraft is convinced his team is making progress. Isaiah Johnson, Alex Long, Zion Meadows, D'Andre Phillips and Ja’Onte Swopes and junior wide receiver Will White. On defense the Scots return Fernandez at linebacker, Phillips and Swopes on the defensive line and Will White at defensive back along with junior Tyree FlorencePatton at defensive back, senior Taveion Lamp at linebacker, junior Angelo Plakio at linebacker and senior Phil White at defensive back.

Kraft realizes Highland Park will be an underdog in most every game it plays this season, with the Scots’ schedule including four games against Class 6A teams that posted winning records a year ago, but the Scot coach just wants to see steady progress. “We have good kids and we’ve got some good athletes, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, so it’s going to take a while here,’’ Kraft said. “If people expect us to all of a

sudden be contenders in a year or two they’re mistaken. We’ve got a step and a process for the future that we’re aiming at and we’ve just got to get a little bit better each week and every year get a little bit better and eventually it will get to where it needs to be. “What we try to tell the kids all the time is, ‘Go hard in everything you do.’ Every kid’s got a goal and if every kid reaches their goal every game we have a chance to win the game. We want each kid to reach towards their goals every single game and then hope that’s enough for the team as a whole to get the win.’’ One of the biggest obstacles facing Highland Park is that the school sometimes lacks the numbers to field support teams. “One of the big problems I feel like for Highland Park in years past has been a lack of freshman and JV teams and a lack for those average kids that get playing time,’’ Kraft said. “Those are the kids that make a great football team, those average kids filling in the pieces. And we’re losing those kids because we don’t have enough out to compete at the JV level or the freshman level.’’ The Scots were able to field a freshman team in 2015 and Kraft

is hopeful that will be the case this fall. But while numbers are a concern, Kraft thinks he has some players who have the talent to go on and play at the college level. “I really think so and there’s a few of those guys that really bought in this summer and worked hard and they’re setting those goals so they can go to college, so they can try to play sports,’’ Kraft said. “All of those kids are getting good grades in school and that’s the important thing so there’s more opportunities for them in college.’’ Highland Park will open its season at home Friday against 6A Washburn Rural, which posted a 5-4 record last season.

Why show up if you don’t plan on winning?” glenn o’neil

Trojans coming off 8-2 campaign By Rick Peterson

First-year Seaman coach Glenn O’Neil compiled a record of 97-14 during nine seasons at Scott City, leading the Beavers to the Class 3A state championship in 2012.

O’Neil determined to bring winning mindset to Vikings Former Scott City coach brings state-championship resume to Seaman By Rick Peterson

rick.peterson@cjonline.com

The obvious goal for Seaman’s football team is to show improvement after the Vikings posted a 2-8 record a year ago. But new Viking coach Glenn O’Neil, who posted a 97-14 record with a state title in nine seasons at Scott City, is setting his sights much higher. “Why show up if you don’t plan on winning?’’ O’Neil said. “We know we’re going to be underdogs in three or four games and there’s a couple of games where it should be 50-50 and there’s going to be a couple of games where maybe we’re the favorite. “But we’re going to approach every game like we’re supposed to win and that’s the only way I’ve ever coached. I hope that kind of rubs off on these guys.’’ Seaman returns a solid nucleus from last year’s team that went to the Class 5A playoffs, and O’Neil said he used the summer to get to know the Viking players and let the team know what his expectations are for the coming season. “It was kind of a rollercoaster ride,’’ O’Neil said. “The core kids that are probably going to get the majority of the playing time, they were here every day for the most part. Their percentages in the weight room, their increases in the weight room were good and their seven-on-seven they picked things up. “For us it was the fringe guys, the guys that are going to be the JV guys and the young guys coming up that were the ones that were kind of on the bottom of the roller-coaster hill. Those are the ones that have got to buy in just a little bit better.’’ Offensively, senior quarterback Dalton Cowan (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) is a top returner for the Vikings, earning first-team All-City Top 11 honors as an athlete. Cowan ranked third in the city in total offense (regular season) with 1,517 yards and he ranked second in the city in passing, throwing for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns. The Vikings also return senior tight end Cale Beam (6-0, 205), junior wingback Janson Garman (6-1, 180),

Seaman senior quarterback Dalton Cowan was an All-City Top 11 pick as an athlete last year after throwing for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns.

senior wide receiver Nick Steiner (6-1, 175), senior slotback Simeon Sykes (5-8, 175) and senior center Jeremy Wells (6-1, 240). Steiner caught 38 passes for 501 yards and three touchdowns last year while Sykes caught 21 passes for 293 yards and four TDs. Sykes also averaged 35.9 yards as Seaman’s punter. “When we were working pretty steady during the summer, the skill guys I really liked,’’ O’Neil said. “They came out here and they learned the process and they learned the terminology and did a really good job. They had a good summer. “The line, it’s a little tougher on them just because since you can’t go full contact very much the line’s probably a little bit behind.’’ Defensively, Steiner and Sykes return in the defensive backfield and Beam is back at defensive end, while the Vikings also return senior linebackers Mike Latendresse (5-10, 185), Kevin Moranz (5-8, 160) and Devon Temmon (5-8, 205), junior defensive end Mitch Miller (6-2, 210) and senior defensive tackle Matt Schlossman (5-10, 160). O’Neil said he and his staff will stress consistent

improvement, while also trying to develop depth, especially in the line. “Every rep should be a little bit better because you’ve already got one more rep’s experience the next time you get up there,’’ O’Neil said. “Repetitions have to be key, effort has to be key. “We need more big kids. That’s one thing we don’t have a lot of. We’ve got some big young kids, but the older guys aren’t very deep so we’ve got to create some depth on the line and once they can play a little fresher I think things are going to pick up for us.’’ Although he’s making the jump from Class 3A to 5A, O’Neil said he’ll approach things the same way he has throughout his career. “Football’s football,’’ he said. “No. 1 it’s how dedicated you are. No. 2 it’s how much heart you have, and No. 3 are you coachable? For me the philosophy is pretty close to the same and I’m not treating it any different. “I know the speed of the game is going to pick up when we play your Manhattans and your Junction Citys, but as far as the level of competition there’s some good ballplayers in the west and there’s some good ball-

Sept. 30 Manhattan

players in the east. It’s just line up and play, and let’s see who’s better.’’ Although he’s still just getting started at Seaman, O’Neil said he’s having a good time thus far. “I’m enjoying myself,’’ he said. “I’m not looking back and wishing I was at Scott City. I’m happy where I am and I’m ready to go. I know there’s going to be some bumps in the road, but at the same time I hope there’s smiles on the faces, too. “I love coaching. I love being around kids and we’ve got good kids. We’ve just got to kind of change a couple of things. No. 1 is the expectation that we plan on winning and No. 2 is the work-ethic stuff. Don’t feel sorry for yourselves and let’s get ready to roll.”

A high school football team doesn’t graduate two Big 12 signees and its top defensive player without feeling it the next season. Topeka High coach Walt Alexander knows he will miss Mike McCoy (Kansas State), Teven Jenkins (Oklahoma State) and Jacob Anderson (Washburn) this fall. But after a string of strong seasons, including an 8-2 record and a share of the Centennial League championship last fall, Alexander has high expectations for his Trojans again this fall. “I think our kids (expect to be successful), for sure,’’ Alexander said. “For the last four or five, six, seven years, when we’ve lost the Raymond Solises and the Will Gearys and we’ve lost the (Alec) Beattys and we’ve lost the (Austin) Tillmans everybody said, ‘Oh, they’re going to be down,’ and every year it seems like we just kind of reload because we have really good kids that work tremendously hard. I feel like we’ll be OK this year. “I think our kids (are) focused on what their mission is and we’re just going to take it one game at a time and see where we end up. Half these guys played with those kids last year and we had a good year, but unless you win it all you’re never satisfied. I don’t know if we can ever do that (win the state championship), but our goal has always been to play every play as hard as we can and every game as hard as we can.’’ Alexander said the Trojans took a big step over the offseason to get ready for 2016. “We’ve done everything that you can possibly do,’’ Alexander said. “We’ve been to the KU camp, we’ve been to team camps, we’ve been to seven-on-seven and we’ve had practices and we had our team camp and we lifted weights four days a week. So there’s absolutely nothing more this group of kids could have done in the summertime. We had a great summer.’’ Back to lead the Trojans on offense is 5-foot-10, 184pound senior quarterback Corey Thomas, an All-City Top 11 pick last fall when he accumulated 1,932 yards of total offense, including 945 yards on 117 carries. Also back on offense are senior linemen Lee Jones (6-0, 290) and Billy Wagemaker (6-1, 247), junior lineman Tanner Mathias (6-0, 259) and senior wide

receiver Keaton Gage (6-1, 175). Defensively the Trojans return senior defensive back Stephaun Carter (5-9, 165), senior defensive lineman Bryce Cooper (5-6, 176) and senior linebacker Jyucshi Williams (5-10, 178). Carter was the city defensive newcomer of the year last fall and Carter, Jones, Matthias, Wagemaker and Williams all received AllCity honorable mention. “Defensively we’ve got a lot of unproven guys but we have a lot of seniors, a lot of upperclassmen that have waited their turn,’’ Alexander said. “Offensively I think our offensive line is probably as big if not better than last year and we’ve got Corey back and we’ve got speed in the backfield and two really good receivers.’’ Alexander is a fan of the new postseason system in place for 6A and 5A schools, which eliminates district play. Teams will play eight regular-season games before week nine opens the playoffs. “We kind of get a bad rap because we’ve won eight games, eight games, eight games, seven games, eight games and we get in the playoffs (and get beat),’’ Alexander said. “But if we’d had the new playoff system in the last five years we’d have had the No. 1 seed and we wouldn’t have met a Derby or a Free State until the third round. So we’re excited about (the new system).” Topeka High will open its season Friday at Hayden in a matchup of the two schools that posted the top records in the city last fall. Topeka High and Hayden, which was 10-2 and a 4A Division I semifinalist last season, have not played since 2013. “We’ve got nothing but respect for Hayden, what they’ve done and the quality program that they’ve had,’’ Alexander said. “They’ve had it longer than we have and they’ve done it better and longer than we have. Even though I think we’ve been pretty good for the last six or seven years, they’ve been good for the last 20 or so years.’’

Buhler, Rural still looking for marquee 6A victory By Rick Peterson

JAKE GATCHELL/SPECIAL TO THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

Washburn Rural’s Steve Buhler has compiled a record of 132-69 during his career, but Buhler enters his fourth season as Junior Blues coach still seeking a signature victory against Class 6A competition.

Unlike past seasons, Washburn Rural’s football team won’t be required to beat some of the state’s top Class 6A teams to make it to the postseason, with all 6A and 5A teams making the playoffs under the new Kansas State High School Activities Association system. But new system or not, Junior Blues coach Steve Buhler said proving Rural can compete, and beat, 6A’s best is still at the top of the to-do list. Washburn Rural bounced back from a tough 2-7 season in 2014 to post a 5-4 record last fall, but the Junior Blues were 0-4 against 6A competition. “The big thing for us in our program is trying to get over the hump of beating a 6A school,’’ said Buhler, who is starting his fourth season at Rural. “We’ve struggled over the years, even before I was here, with that so that’s our next step, trying to get that signature win against a good 6A program like Topeka High, Manhattan or Junction City.’’ With seven returning senior starters on offense and six on defense, the Junior Blues could be in position to take that step forward this fall. “The year before we kind of took a step backwards and I think we took a step back forward again (last year),’’ said Buhler, 13269 as a head coach. “We got some valuable experience when you look at this year’s team and the number of kids that have playing experience off of last year’s team. We do have a lot of experience coming back. There’s a couple of positions where we don’t, but for the most part this is probably the most mature group that we’ve had as far as playing juniors and seniors. “That’s been kind of our goal. To be able to compete against the Manhattans, Junction Citys and Topeka Highs we need to play with juniors and seniors and upperclassmen and not filling in sophomores. I think we’re finally to that point where the upperclassmen are in those spots for us.’’ Offensively Washburn Rural returns running backs Hunter Browning (5-foot11, 195 pounds) and Ben Harrison (5-10, 180), wide receivers Jacob Martens (6-0, 170) and Colin Wilson (6-2, 175) and offensive linemen Je’shon Edwards (6-0, 255), Caleb Locke (6-0, 265) and Danny Shields (6-3, 260). Shields earned All-Centennial League honors last season and was an All-City pick on offense while Browning rushed for 413 yards on 59 carries and Harrison picked up 324 yards on 58 carries. Defensively the Junior Blues return line-

backers Nolan Brewer (5-11, 190), Braeden Ingold (6-2, 195) and Luke McKenzie (6-3, 185), defensive lineman Patrick Thompson (6-0, 270) and defensive backs Cody Ladson (6-1, 200) and Chandler Rogers (5-11, 185). Brewer earned All-City and All-Centennial League honorable mention last season. Buhler also believes the Junior Blues took the steps they needed to take during the offseason to get ready for the upcoming season. “I thought this has been the best summer we’ve had as far as consistency, having numbers in the weight room and their work ethic,’’ Buhler said. “And, more importantly for us, we had a good-sized freshman group that was in there all summer. I think the kids are really buying in to coach (Tyler) Pfitzenmaier’s program out here with strength and conditioning. “We had such a good summer that where we used to do two-a-days and do our conditioning in the morning we’ve backed away from that. The kids have come in in pretty good shape from the summer so we’re just going with afternoon practices.’’ The biggest question mark for the Junior Blues entering the season is deciding who is going to be Rural’s starting quarterback, with last year’s starter, Mitchell Schurig, graduating. Mitchell’s younger brother, junior Michael Schurig, is vying to take over as the starter, as are sophomores Jordan White and Preston Williams. “It’s been a battle since day one,’’ Buhler said. “We even talked about it after Christmas break last year that between the three of them this is going to be an open thing and that we’re going to grade you out on everything you do and whoever is playing the best at the time (will play). “It may be a situation where they’re all about even and we just try to give each of them a chance in a game and see what they can do in a game situation.’’ The Junior Blues open the season on the road Friday night, traveling to Highland Park. Washburn Rural will play its home opener on Sept. 9 against Manhattan.

Topeka West’s Tetuan preaching patience, progress By Rick Peterson

rick.peterson@cjonline.com

John Tetuan enjoyed outstanding success throughout his playing career. Tetuan was part of state championship teams in football and baseball at Hayden and earned All-State recognition in both sports before going on to earn All-America honors in baseball at Wichita State and play minor league baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization. Success has been harder to come by for Tetuan as Topeka West’s head football coach, but he believes progress is being made. Tetuan’s Chargers have posted an 8-28 record in his first four seasons as head coach, but Topeka West was 3-51 in the previous six seasons before he took over, including three winless campaigns. “I feel like we are (improving),’’ said Tetuan, whose Chargers were 2-7 a year ago. “We went to Emporia State’s full-contact camp and the coaches there gave our kids compliments, saying it was the best we’ve been since we’ve been going there. There’s been comments like that throughout the summer and it just helps hearing somebody outside of the program saying that. “You feel as a coach you’re getting better, but when other people see it, it feels good. Our participation this summer was good and I think we’re getting better.’’ Tetuan admits it sometimes is hard to be patient, but he also realizes that rebuilding the Charger program is a step-by-step process. “I do want things to happen right

now, but I also understand the steps we have to take to get there and each year we just work our hardest,’’ he said. “You come in with a certain mindset and then, just like anywhere you go and from year to year, you get a different group of kids with a different mindset themselves so you’ve just got to find a way to get in touch with those kids and find a way to make that group that you’re working with that year better. “Overall I think it’s working in our favor and we’re doing some good things and our kids are buying in a little more. You can see that year after year. The participation in the summer’s been up and that’s a huge thing for us.’’ Competing in a Centennial League that includes four Class 6A schools that all posted winning records a year ago, Tetuan knows a big step for his team is to be able to compete on a night-in and night-out basis. “When I first got here we weren’t in many games at all to even have a chance,’’ he said. “Last year we played some pretty good teams and found ourselves in positions to make some plays towards the end of the game to give ourselves a chance to win and that’s what we’re asking. “Anything can happen in high school football, but you have to give yourself a chance to win at the end and that’s what we’re getting better at. As soon as we can do that on a consistent basis and find ourselves a few Ws here and there it will just build our confidence and we’ll build on that.’’ Topeka West returns five starters on offense and four on defense, led by senior quarterback/free safety/punt-

er Zach Shima (5-foot-10, 161 pounds), the city offensive newcomer of the year and an All-City pick on defense last season. Shima led the city in total offense (2,081 yards), passing (1,764 yards, 17 touchdowns) and punting (36-yard average). Also returning for the Chargers is junior running back/wide receiver/ cornerback Chris Ellis (5-10, 157), who caught 28 passes for 364 yards and two TDs in ’15, earning All-City and All-Centennial League honorable mention. Senior lineman Blake Hartke (5-11, 248), junior lineman Kaleb Ayers (5-11, 27) and junior wide receiver Elliot Mehrens (6-1, 159) also return for the Chargers on offense. Defensively Shima and Ellis return in the secondary, Hartke on the defensive line and senior Brandon Shughart (5-7, 148) on the defensive line. West returns 19 lettermen overall. Topeka West opens its season on Friday at Hummer Sports Park against Seaman. The Chargers and Vikings were traditional district opponents before the Kansas State High School Activities Association eliminated the district system for 6A and 5A schools. Teams in 6A and 5A will play eight regular-season games before opening playoffs in week nine. The state is divided in half (east and west) with first-round playoff pairings and host schools being determined by the regular season. The Chargers will compete in the western half of the state for the playoffs. “I like the mindset it puts kids in,’’ Tetuan said of the new system.

rossville bulldawgs, silver lake eagles

Rivals each have something to prove Dawgs: Sans Horak, Rossville setting sights on Class 3A three-peat

Eagles: Early playoff exit a major motivating factor for Hamilton, Silver Lake

By Brent Maycock

By Brent Maycock

ROSSVILLE — Fresh off capturing its first state football championship, Rossville entered the 2015 season with some big questions hanging over its collective head. Could the Bulldawgs follow it up with another championship-caliber season wearing the role of the hunted rather than the hunter? And could All-State quarterback Tucker Horak come anywhere close to duplicating the huge numbers he posted as a junior after graduation claimed a healthy number of skill players around him? Starting with a 48-13 romp of Clay Center in the season opener, Rossville had an emphatic answer. Not only did Horak and the Bulldawgs back up their breakthrough 2014 season, they did it in historic fashion. Horak produced a season for the ages and Rossville once again ran the table, capping a second straight 14-0 state title with a come-from-behind 20-19 win over Wichita Collegiate in the Class 3A championship game. “I think the fact that we were able to validate ourselves last year, it proved it wasn’t an accident the first time,” Rossville coach Derick Hammes said. “It shows we’re doing some pretty good things here. The second one, personally, might have been a little more satisfying, but gosh how can you take away from the breakthrough and the things we were able to do the first time around? “What we tell the kids are the odds are really against you to actually win it. You can have an injury or a bad game or something unlucky can happen. Really, it’s a lot of good fortune to put it all together and get it done.” Riding a 28-game winning streak as it begins its quest for a third straight state title, Rossville once again has some big question marks as the season begins. Namely, how in the world do the Bulldawgs replace Horak and some other key figures from both title runs? The void Horak leaves is a monstrous one. After amassing 3,740 yards of total offense and 50 total touchdowns as a junior, Horak took it to a level unseen in Kansas history as a senior. Becoming the first player in state history to rush and throw for more than 2,000 yards in the same season, Horak racked up 4,929 yards of total offense and 77 touchdowns. The standout finished his career ranked sixth nationally in career total yardage with 12,834 yards. Mighty big shoes to fill indeed, and a task that will fall to senior Jacob Bradshaw, who spent most of his time at receiver a year ago. Bradshaw ranked third on the team with 405 receiving yards and four scores, while also rushing for 394 yards and six touchdowns. In backup duty to Horak, Bradshaw completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 133 yards. “I’m not really feeling that much pressure,” Bradshaw said. “It’s going to be a team thing this year. Tucker did a lot last year, and this year the entire team will be trying to fill his shoes, not just me. He definitely showed me a lot and I was lucky to have him show me the ropes.” Bradshaw will have a luxury of having some big weapons to work with. Senior back Dawson Hammes ran for 1,111 yards and 10 touchdowns as Horak’s backfield complement. Senior receiver Cole Schumacher led the Bulldawgs in receiving yards (682) and touchdowns (11). As big a hole as Horak left, an even bigger one could hold the key to Rossville’s success this year. An overlooked strength of the Bulldawgs a year ago externally were big and experienced offensive and defensive lines, led by the likes of All-3A pick Gabe Marney and state wrestling champions Isaac Luellen and Kole Davoren. Rossville graduated four starters across the offensive front and the entire defensive front, leaving senior Jackson Reeves as the lone returning starter to either unit. “That’s where it happens,” Hammes said. “Establishing the line of scrimmage is where you win football games. Replacing that group is going to be extremely difficult. We feel we’ve got some pieces and maybe more depth developed at this point than what we thought we would.” An All-3A pick at linebacker after making 159 tackles, Dawson Hammes will lead a defense that will be strong in the back half with Bradshaw, Schumacher, Wyatt Dyche and Trevor Balch all returning in the secondary. The bar has been set at Rossville, which has won three straight Mid-East League titles. Now it’s up to this year’s group to keep it going. “We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished, but at this point, we’re far, far removed from that,” said Hammes, who is 40-1 in three years at Rossville. “It’s how to get this team ready, but having the success of the last two years gives us a barometer. We know the way and understand what it takes and now it’s a matter of putting it all together.”

SILVER LAKE — The feeling was quite simply different. One week into the 2015 Class 3A playoffs, Silver Lake’s season was done. A 34-28 loss to Sabetha bounced the Eagles from the postseason in the second round. How premature was Silver Lake’s exit? It marked the first time since 2009 and just the second time in the past 14 seasons the Eagles hadn’t advanced to at least the state semifinals. “It was a weird feeling that we didn’t go beyond two games in the playoffs,” Silver Lake quarterback Dalton Dultmeier said. “I think it’s been a motivation for everyone on this team to get back into that state championship game and go a lot further than we did last year. ... We didn’t have any saying (in the offseason), but we made it a priority to push each other and come together better as a team.” By most standards, Silver Lake’s 9-2 season was pretty successful. The Eagles opened the season with thrilling overtime victories over Holton and PerryLecompton and the only regular-season loss came to eventual 3A state champion Rossville. But the standards at Silver Lake are considerably higher than most programs. So losing to an archrival and not making an extended stay in the postseason fell well short of the lofty expectations that come with donning the maroon and gold. “It’s not what we’re used to, but at the same time we understand that we’ve got a target on our backs the same way Rossville has a target on their backs,” said veteran coach C.J. Hamilton, who enters his 41st season as the state’s winningest coach. “You have to play well and if you turn the ball over six times like we did against Sabetha, you don’t deserve to go on. The better team won that game and that’s just the reality of it.” There haven’t been many times in Hamilton’s legendary career where Silver Lake didn’t enter the season capable of meeting expectations, and the 2016 team certainly has the look of another contender. Though graduation claimed a strong senior class, a nucleus of starters return on each side of the ball that will allow the Eagles to enter the season a bit ahead of where it did a year ago. For starters, Dultmeier wasn’t even the starting quarterback when the 2015 season began, sitting behind senior Cole Baird. But when Baird suffered an injury in the opener with Holton, Dultmeier stepped in and never let go of the starting job, finishing the season with 2,172 yards and 24 touchdowns passing as well as 491 yards and eight touchdowns rushing. He’ll return two of his top-four targets in junior Keenan Baird (35 catches, 667 yards, 8 TDs) and senior Ryan Wagner (26, 372, 4) as well as three starting offensive linemen in senior Thad Madere and juniors Josh Dallman and Tyler Griffin. “Being able to watch guys like Dalin Kruger and other quarterbacks in the past helped me learn from what they’d done,” Dultmeier said. “This year I feel like we’re ready to go and I’ve got a good handle on my receivers and they have a feel for what I’m going to do.” Hamilton said the Eagle defense, which allowed just 16.9 points per game last year, was maybe even ahead of the offense. Six starters return on that side of the ball, led by junior linebacker Josh Boyd. The first-team All-Mid-East League pick led the Eagles in tackles as a sophomore with 122 tackles (78 solo) and 14 tackles for loss. Baird was second on the team with 79 tackles from his safety spot and tied for the team lead with two interceptions. Also returning defensively are senior ends Trace Henderson and Joey Clark, senior lineman Timmy Williams and junior safety Mason Jones. “We should be pretty stout if we have all 11 guys doing their job,” Boyd said. “As far as our personnel, especially our first-teamers, we’ve got a pretty good pulse on what these kids can do,” Hamilton said. “We get pretty young pretty quick because our senior class isn’t very big, so that’s a concern.” After opening with Holton the past two seasons, Silver Lake’s schedule gets a new look and the Eagles will open 2016 at Class 5A KC Washington. The showdown with rival Rossville falls in the middle of the slate and the Eagles have a new-look district that includes Royal Valley and Perry-Lecompton, both making the drop from Class 4A Division II to 3A this year. Hamilton enters the season needing just 10 wins to reach 400 victories in his storied career. “It will be more of a community thing than a C.J. Hamilton thing,” he said. “If I accomplish that, it will all be at one school and that’s what I’ll take the most pride in. Our football program is about more than me and the coaches. It’s about the community and the kids.”

new playoff format for Class 6A, 5A At the conclusion of Week 8 of the regular season, the KSHSAA will seed all Class 6A and 5A schools from 1-16 in both the eastern and western sections of the state. Once seeding is completed, the teams will be placed in a playoff bracket. PLAYOFF BRACKET SEEDING CRITERIA: 1. Win-loss percentage in all games played from Week 1 to Week 8. 2. Head-to-head games if all teams tied for a seed played each other during the current eight-game schedule. 3. Twenty-One Point (21) Tiebreaker Procedure: n A 21-point tiebreaker procedure will be used to determine seeds when

there are two or more teams still tied after criteria Nos. 1 and 2 are not able to break the tie. n The total margin of points each team had in all games through Week 8. Marginal points are the point differences in final game score. No team will add or subtract more than 21 points in any game. No team will add or subtract more than one point for any game which was tied at the end of regulation time and the winning team was eventually determined in overtime. n If more than two teams are tied in win-loss percentage and there was

no common winner between those teams, then marginal points will be used to establish the first seed from those tied. The tiebreaker process will begin again with the remaining teams. This process will continue until all teams tied have been seeded onto the bracket. 4. Total number of wins against teams within their classification or higher. 5. Win-loss percentage against teams within their classification or higher. 6. Drawn by lot (KSHSAA will draw, with at least one witness from the KSHSAA).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs took pass rusher Tamba Hali off the physically unable to perform list Monday, though the team said he will practice on a limited basis. Hali had surgery in the offseason on his balky knees, which forced him to miss nearly every practice late last season. He was still able to play in games but hardly looked 100 percent. Hali has spent training camp working out with trainers, but his removal from the PUP list means he can begin working out with the rest of the team. Still, it is unlikely he will play in the Chiefs’ remaining preseason games against Chicago and Green Bay. The 32-year-old Hali played in 15 games and had 61/2 sacks last season.

Despite a number of off-field incidents, coach Jim Grobe and the No. 23 Baylor Bears could still make some noise this season.

Washburn softball announced Monday the addition of seven players for Brenda Holaday’s first season as WU head coach, including two players who will return to the team after sitting out last season. Junior outfielder Jordan Erickson and sophomore infielder Savannah Moore will rejoin the team after taking a one-year hiatus from softball. Erickson has started 89 career games for Washburn, earning honorable mention as a sophomore. Moore, who played under Holaday at Washburn Ru-

Kelsee Henry is a transfer from Johnson County, where she went 15-4 in the circle with a 1.28 ERA last season. She spent her freshman season at Emporia State, posting a 6-2 record with a 3.30 ERA for the Hornets.
