Microsoft Excel & OneNote for the Building/ Strategic Planning We will be walking you through a step-by-step approach to create a Construction Industry Microsoft Excel is a common tool used by businesses large and small. It’s likely that you have learned to use Excel by yourself, knowing just enough to get the job done for the day. But with a bit a time you’ll be surprised at how much more you can do and do it better, faster and safer. This session starts with an overview of the core techniques needed to work efficiently with Excel and moves on look at best practices for designing your workbooks. With this knowledge we’ll start applying Excel to the multiple areas of Construction. We’ll see how Excel can be successfully used in areas such as: Estimation, Project Management, Financial Analysis and Expense Tracking. Next, we’ll turn our attention to OneNote, Microsoft’s “electronic notebook” and show how integrating these two programs can help you better manage your business.

Drawing on real world examples he has been teaching clients on getting the most out of Microsoft Excel to help manage their business. He also presents frequent seminars for the Chartered Professional Accountants and UBC Continuing Education on Microsoft Excel, Office and Crystal Reports. Igor Trninic, Managing Partner Igor started running a College Pro Painters franchise at 18 and quickly grew it to one of the top franchises in Canada. After finishing an honours degree in Accounting and HR at the SFU Beedie School of Business, he decided to leave the dull world of numbers and followed his passion of developing people and businesses. Working at College Pro as a General Manager for the franchisor, he tripled the revenue of his division in three years by hiring and leading great managers. Here, Igor saw the power of combining amazing people with strong systems to drive scalability. From there, he chose to test these principles on a new venture with the launch of Shack Shine, and together with the guidance of a highly experienced trades entrepreneur, they grew the company to a full scale franchisor within a year and a half. Shack Shine was eventually acquired by 1-800-GOT-JUNK to be scaled across North America and Igor launched the Breakthrough Academy to guide trades and home service entrepreneurs grow their businesses through proven principles. Since then he has given many presentations on various matters relating to the application of the GST/HST, most notably in connection with the implementation of and the elimination of the HST in BC.

Tackle Stress Before It Tackles You! Stress is an inevitable part of most people’s professional and personal lives and, if left unmanaged, it can result in both physical and mental suffering. Some of the results of unmanaged stress are: sleep and digestive problems, impaired judgment, sadness and loss of concentration. We also know that stress is a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Don’t get too stressed by this list! This interactive and practical half day workshop will help by clearly defining stress and acknowledging sources and types of stress as well as the role of anxiety in stressful situations. We will use real life examples to illustrate the impact of focusing on the ‘circle of concern’ rather than the ‘circle of influence’ and reframe the way we look at the presence of stress and anxiety in our lives. Finally we will explore practical strategies for tackling short term and long term stress in a variety of situations. This workshop will support you in: 1. Clearly identifying sources of stress in your life 2. Reframing your mindset towards stress 3. Identifying relevant stress management strategies

Sherri Calder

Sherri Calder is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. She holds a Certificate in Conflict Resolution and Mediation from the Justice Institute of BC and an MA from the Adler University of Professional Psychology. She draws on 18 years of experience working in the field of conflict resolution to inform her work as a therapist. In addition to her work as a Registered Clinical Counsellor Sherri is currently an instructor and coach at the Justice Institute of B.C. in the Centre for Conflict Resolution and the Justice and Public Safety Division.

Proposal Writing Writing proposals is an important skill in converting promising business leads into successful business. If you’ve often struggled with what to write, how to write it and how to respond to formal and informal requests for proposals you’re not alone. A lack of a proposal letter or a poorly worded or structured one can mean a lost opportunity. In this session you will learn: • Components of a proposal – scope, schedule, budget, payments and others. • What to ask clients in a pre-proposal meeting to get the information you need. • How to prepare changes or extensions to proposals. • Common proposal terms. • Types of proposals – letter proposals, responses to structured requests. • How to write clearly and prevent errors. This course will be for anyone who writes proposals in the course of their work. You will learn how to approach proposal preparation in a more organized and less stressful way.

Katya Wilson Senior Consultant, The Neutral Zone Katya Wilson is a consultant, small business owner, trainer and manager with over 25 years of experience. During this time Katya has worked as an owner/ manager and as a consultant for a wide range of organizations on a variety of technology, organizational change and facilities projects. She has owned small businesses ranging from one to 35 employees and worked for large corporations and small companies. She is knowledgeable in business management including planning, human resources, finance and development. Sue Wazny MSc., CRC MBTI Cert. Sue is a highly sought after speaker because of her energetic, humorous and engaging presentation style. She effectively pairs the subject theory with real life examples of how she has put her teachings into practice in her daily work. Sue teaches a wide variety of courses in the areas of Conflict Management, Communication Skills, Teambuilding and Leadership. Sue is a faculty member at the Justice Institute of BC in the Centre for Conflict Resolution, where she teaches a variety of courses. Sue maintains a clinical practice which includes workplace mediation, team facilitations, respectful workplace complaint investigation, performance coaching and critical incident stress management. She holds a Master’s of Science degree in Psychology, certificates in Conflict Resolution and Mediation, and is a certified Myers Briggs Type Indicator practitioner.

Einer Halbig has over 16 years of education and experience in residential construction. He specializes in practical solutions that make a house more efficient, safe and comfortable. Trained as a civil engineer, he has evaluated over 2000 existing homes across the Lower Mainland as well as hundreds of new homes. Einar embarked on a deep-green energy retrofit of his own house and now enjoys the many benefits of the end result. He brings an engineering background, technical sales expertise, and handson experience to the field of energy-efficiency and sustainable consulting.
