the return of the internationally renowned adventures in motion festival sees onedotzero and BFI Southbank join forces once again to present a scintillating array of audiovisual and cinematic experiences. the festival permeates every space of BFI Southbank and the BFI IMAX, showcasing the most progressive new short film from around the world, feature previews, playful interactive installations, startling live audiovisual performances and talks, workshops, director q+as and this year for the first time at BFI Southbank, a gallery show. taking ‘utopian visions’, as a loose theme, we’ve endeavoured to transcend our immediate economic backdrop by embuing the programme with a sense of adventure, hope and creative positivity. with an emphasis on convergence and collaboration, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, from innovative education projects, the family friendly ‘sprites’ screening, new programmes exploring coding, robotica and new city visions. every bit as important as the programme itself is the sense of community that exists as artists, filmmakers and practitioners from all areas of technology and the moving image hang out, and this year we have even more lounges, parties and dj events providing opportunities to meet and mingle with like minded creatives. so come with an open mind and get involved. shane rj walter, director onedotzero stuart brown, head of events, BFI Southbank www.onedotzero.com

onedotzero has always been rather partial to our mechanical friends of the future, demonstrated over the years in the festival programming. this selection explores the ethics and social effects of a world shared with robots or androids, from spy messengers in snowy moscow [cannes lions 2010 grand prix winner - the gift / carl eric rinsch] to extraterrestrial robotic invasions of earth by way of uruguay [ataque de pánico! / fede alvarez].

creatives are increasingly using computer code as a raw material to create fluid and self-perpetuating moving image work. this brand-new programme showcases the most ambitious personal experiments and imaginative examples of generative films from a cuttingedge community demonstrating a completely alternative way of working and realising their creative visions.

a brand new programme of eclectic gems from female animation directors currently leading the way where both emerging and established practitioners in this multifaceted creative field are given a wider platform. highlights include george wu’s charmingly engaging kinetic sculpture-come-music promo and the 2d naïve imaginative style of rca student julia pott’s love story, ‘howard’, where early love’s passion heartbreakingly devolves into domestic humdrum.

interactive and screen-based moving image installations will be available throughout the festival. from playful interactive real-time animation and personal cinema pods to graphic mapping techniques and the one-off curated onscreen selection in the studio, there is plenty to keep festival goers of any age occupied in between screenings and events! 10-14 nov free, studio, foyer, delegate centre and atrium

quayola installation: topologies a bespoke multi-screen installation, featuring a brand new installment of the ongoing strata series, by regular festival contributor and artist quayola. following the trails of the previous series, pre-modernist paintings re-emerge from their sedentary stillness, evolving into complex and mutable formations. las meninas [d. velazquez, 1656] and immacolata concezione [g. tiepolo, 1767] become topographic maps, linear pathways and structures, which pulsate, diverging from the original to produce a living abstract landscape. topologies renews an interest in the calculative, generative and arrhythmical qualities that lie dormant behind the details of a masterpiece, organically transforming a recognisable reality into a colour-saturated, calculated fabrication. www.quayola.com 10-14 nov | 12:00 – 20:00 BFI gallery, BFI Southbank free

a selection of moving image installations will be presented on screens inside the ovei - a range of personal cinema pods, whose design would not feel out of place in the futuristic set design of kubrick’s seminal film 2001: a space odyssey. created by lee mccormack and engineered with mclaren applied technologies of formula one renown, the ovei original is a personalised entertainment capsule, which delivers digital media experiences. a unique opportunity to experience the festival from within your own personal cinema!

for the first time at the BFI, onedotzero presents a curated programme of linear moving image installations on the studio cinema screen. a free drop-in event available daily, where the audience can get a taster of the wider festival programme as well as experience moving image work designed for gallery screen. programme highlights include max hattler’s 1925 aka hell, an animation inspired by the work of french outsider artist augustin lesage, a recent d-fuse collaboration with electronic music artist hauschka and the special screening of bird 1, a floral tribute to life and decay by dylan kendle, inspired by the brand new underworld track.
