A complete player Chas Moody combined aggressiveness with athleticism to be a force for St. Edward’s

VERO BEACH — When opposing teams played St. Edward’s, the game plan always included this: Stay away from Chas Moody and don’t let him get the ball. Moody has been one of the area’s best lacrosse players the past three years, but his role intensified when he transferred from Vero Beach High School to St. Edward’s after his junior year. Switching to a smaller school and a team with less depth, Moody carried an even larger load his senior season, and he rose to the challenge. Despite being constantly doubleteamed, the midfielder scored 43 goals and added 16 assists. He is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year for a second time, adding to the honor he collected two years ago as a Vero Beach sophomore. “He is just so athletic and very skilled in the game of lacrosse,”

St. Edward’s senior midfielder Stats: 43 goals, 16 assists Coach Andy Scheffer: “He’s just on a different level from most players in this area. He’s athletically gifted, he has great stick skills. He is physically strong and competitive. He is the only player teams really have to game-plan for.”

St. Edward’s coach Andy Scheffer said. “He was the only player teams double-teamed, and he is competitive, so he thrives in those situations. Because we didn’t have a lot of depth, we needed him to be the go-to player we knew he was capable of being.” Moody said he transferred to St. Edward’s because he was looking for a change of pace and a different academic environment as he pursued a chance to play in college. The smaller class sizes and more personal attention helped him make the cut

at Salisbury, where he will join the 2011 and 2012 Division III national champions. The switch also enabled him some freedom with his playing style because the Pirates didn’t have as many strong players surrounding him. Moody is one of the few players at St. Edward’s playing lacrosse yearround. “Coach Scheffer gave us a lot of freedom in playing lacrosse,” Moody said. “We had a few set plays, but he really let us go out and just play lacrosse. It was fun.” Though his skills were raw early in his high school career, Moody’s aggressive play helped him stand above the rest his sophomore season and now he has developed into a more well-rounded player. “Athletically and with my stick skills and everything, throughout high school I’ve been pretty good, but I think I’ve improved most with my lacrosse IQ ,” Moody said. “My lacrosse IQ — reading plays, anticipating plays and understanding the game and what needs to happen — improved a lot.”

Team: Vero Beach Years with team: Fourth season This season: Guided the Fighting Indians to a seventh straight district title, first post-district win and a 16-5 finish. Vero Beach ended its season with an 8-4 loss to Jupiter in a secondround play-in game. The Indians had lost 12-3 to Jupiter earlier in the season. Quotable: “We are a maturing program where we’ve had our hands on the kids for a while, and it’s a consistent level of effort on everyone’s part. It’s just hard work and getting a group of kids to buy in to have success. It was a gratifying year, particularly with how the kids played their last game. They stepped up and closed the gap with a really good team compared to what we did earlier in the season and we are all looking forward to coming back strong next year.”
