Unblockable
Central’s Jerandious Works tripled his production by working twice as hard in the offseason By Laurel Pfahler

FORT PIERCE — Jerandious Works admits he was feeling a little worn down by the end of the football season. Opponents seemed to be throwing everything they had into blocking the Fort Pierce Central senior defensive tackle, but he made it look effortless while finding ways around them. Works, nicknamed “Junebug,” finished with 88 tackles, including an area-best 32 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 12 games, while leading a Cobras’ defense that allowed only 12.3 points and 183.1 yards per game. After also helping Central to a second consecutive regional final and 11-1 finish, he is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ All-Area Football Defensive Player of the Year. “This season, it was crazy the attention I was getting,” Works said. “I always had two people on me and (opponents) were giving me different looks. It was neat they respected me that much, but at the same time I was like, ‘Come on.’ I was spent.” Central coach Josh Shaffer wasn’t surprised at how dominant Works became this season. Though undersized at only 5-foot-11, Works always

Fort Pierce Central senior defensive lineman Stats: 88 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 1 fumble recovery Coach Josh Shaffer: “With his presence on the field, his ability to control the line of scrimmage and control the game, he caused a lot of teams fits. He saw a lot of different looks. One team tried to cut him, other teams tried to double- and triple-team, one tried to trip him with a running back. He saw a lot of things normal defensive tackles don’t see and he found a way to handle whatever they gave him. He plays with great leverage, great speed and tremendous strength, and when he turns it on, he plays like a monster. There wasn’t anyone that could stop him.”
had the potential, but needed to put it together on a more consistent basis, Shaffer said. “He’s done a lot the last couple years to stand out, but the problem was getting him to play that way every play,” Shaffer said. “He bought
in. He had a fantastic offseason, fantastic spring and an even better summer. He put the work in and that led to a monster year.” Works said he focused on conditioning and improving his hands during the offseason. He knew it had paid off the first game of the season when he forced two fumbles and had an especially hard hit on a running back for a big tackle for loss. “After last year, my coach told me how good I could be if I committed myself, and I just thought, ‘What could it be that coach sees in me?’ ” Works said. “I committed to the offseason program, and my goal was to not get blocked by one person all season. The results were awesome. I felt healthier and like I was capable of making a lot of plays.” Works more than tripled his 2011 tackles for loss total and had almost four times as many sacks as last year, while nearly doubling his total tackles. “He was unblockable,” Shaffer said. “Sometimes at practice, I would have to take him out, just to get something done on offense. He would ruin my day as offensive coordinator, and he ruined a lot of our opponents’ plans too. Wherever he ends up for college is going to get a steal.”
