Lincoln Park, 11th year This year: The boys won their second consecutive district title, taking the crown with a display of strength and depth. Two relay teams, diver Demetri Demet and swimmer Aidas Kavaliauskas were district champs and the rest of the points came from young swimmers down the ranks. LPA compiled an impressive 8-1 regular-season record, with the lone loss coming to perennial power Martin County. Quotable: “I think this year was really special because a lot of these kids I coached, I taught to swim and have known since they were little kids … I taught them to swim and I’ve watched them become talented swimmers.”

STUART — About three weeks before the postseason began, Martin County High School junior Daniel Hartley had the top spot on the area swimming and diving honor roll in five different events. His talent played out during the postseason. Hartley won two individual titles at the District 11-2A championships and was part of relay teams that finished first and second. He then went on to win his second consecutive 100-yard butterfly title at the Region 4-2A meet, to go with a third-place in the 100 backstroke. Despite lingering thoughts that he could go faster, Hartley went on to put together the two best swims by any area boy at the FHSAA Swimming and Diving Finals. He took a bronze medal in the 100 fly, finishing in 50.48 seconds. It was his best time in that event by nearly two seconds. He then took fourth in the 100 back — despite entering the meet seeded ninth in the event. For his achievements in the pool, Hartley has been named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ 2012 All-Area Boys Swimming and Div-

Athlete of the Year

DANIEL HARTLEY

Martin County junior District 11-2A: First in 100-yard butterfly, first in 100 backstroke, on first-place 200 freestyle relay, on second-place medley relay. Region 4-2A: First in 100 fly, third in 100 back, on fifth-place 200 medley relay, on 12th-place 200 free relay Class 2A state: Third in 100 fly, fourth in 100 back Coach Jim McCombs: “He’s a race horse, no doubt about it. He gets in the water and he races. That’s what you saw at state. He got in there and did not quit until he was finished.”

ing Athlete of the Year. “It was a pretty good state meet, so I was happy with that,” he said. “Overall, I wasn’t very satisfied with my year. I don’t think I trained hard enough. So I want to step that up a lot.” Hartley is a familiar face at the state meet. He has qualified each of his three seasons, including his freshman year when he attended

Jensen Beach. This was his best state performance so far. Last year, he placed eighth in the 100 fly and fourth in the back. His time in the 100 back this year was just over half a second faster than last year’s. “It was my best state meet, so far, but I just wanted to go faster,” Hartley said. Hartley did achieve his prime goal, which was to earn his first individual state medal. He did that when he took third in the 100 fly. He considers that his favorite event. “I’ve been swimming since I was 4 and been doing all the strokes,” he said. “Probably when I was 11 or 12, I started going really fast in the butterfly.” Part of Hartley’s mixed emotions about state stem from the fact that he was the only Martin County boy to qualify. Each of the last two years, he was part of at least one relay team that went to state. In fact, he was part of the Martin County 200 medley relay that took second last year. “The relays are so much fun,” he said. “Plus, everyone can get into it. It’s not just me swimming. I do the back stroke in the medley and can do that pretty fast. (I’m first in the pool) and I like that role. I get to set the tone.”
