Martin County, third year (with girls team) This season: Despite not having any seniors in its starting five, Martin County went 14-0 during the regular season, won the Kegel Tournament, won the District 12 tournament and finished third at the state tournament. It was the third consecutive year Martin County’s girls finished in the top three in the state tournament. Quotable: “They had an undefeated regular season and then they swept through districts pretty solidly and had a good showing at state. At state, we wobbled a little bit, but we made it into third. Overall, the season was fantastic. We don’t lose anybody. Hopefully, we can move forward and continue to get stronger.”
I’m very competitive. You just have to want it so bad that you can control your emotions. I don’t find it hard. I’m pretty much focused all the time. It comes a lot from tournaments.”

She (Goodwin) is very consistent and she can hit targets very well.”

STUART — Martin County High School junior Shelly Goodwin is used to competing against some of the best bowlers in the country. After bowling in some of the top tournaments in the nation — including the North Pointe Junior Gold and trying out for Team USA — high school matches seemed much easier. “Competing in those tournaments gives you a lot more practice,” Goodwin said. “It’s not as competitive (in high school) as the bigger tournaments because you don’t have high level of competition or stress. “The biggest was the Team USA tryouts. It’s the best of the best players and it was extremely tough. The biggest tournament (Martin County) had this year was when we went to state and, right away, I was used to the pressure. It wasn’t a big deal.” Goodwin handled the pressure all season. She finished the year with a 213.6 average in 30 games and was the state runner-up for the second year in a row. She also helped lead the Tigers to an undefeated regular season and a third-place finish at state. Goodwin is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newpapers’ All-Area Girls Bowler of the Year. It is the second consecutive year she has claimed the honor. “She is very consistent and she can hit targets very well,” Martin

SHELLY GOODWIN
Martin County High School junior Notable: Goodwin helped guide Martin County’s girls to a third place finish at the state tournament. She averaged 213.6 pins in 30 regular season games, was the District 12 runnerup and also the runner-up in the individual bracket at the state tournament. Coach Tom Baral: “She is just amazing. Her average increased by five pins and she did very well at state. She came from 15th all the way up to second. I think what got her was all the bowling she had to do. She is very determined and very competitive.”
County girls coach Tom Baral said. “This year, she really had a better understanding of her equipment and there’s also a really good chemistry between her and I. “She just had a fantastic year for us.” Baral praised Goodwin for her ability to quickly adapt to lane conditions and her uncanny ability to know how a ball likely will move. He also said she was able to block out distractions and lock in on each shot.
Goodwin admitted being focused is her biggest strength. “I’m very competitive,” Goodwin said. “You just have to want it so bad that you can control your emotions. I don’t find it hard. I’m pretty much focused all the time. It comes a lot from tournaments. “If I didn’t bowl in other tournaments, I don’t think it would be like that.” Goodwin’s strong mental game served her well at the state tournament. After breezing through the regular season and winning the District 12 tournament, the Tigers were hoping to repeat as state champions. And while Martin County wasn’t able to win its second consecutive title, Goodwin still had an excellent showing despite bowling in 54 games in the two-day tournament. “She bowled a lot in that tournament,” Baral said. “The girl she lost to in the final (Groveland South Lake’s Katie Stark) didn’t have to bowl team, so she was a lot fresher. Shelly was able to take a defeat and come back and win. That’s hard, because you have to keep persevering. You have to forget a bad shot and move forward and she does that well.” As much as she’s excelled the past two years, Goodwin still wants to do the one thing she has yet to accomplish — win a state title. “Finishing in second is frustrating,” she said. “I hate it. I am beyond motivated for next year.”
