Port St. Lucie, fifth year This season: Port St. Lucie went 14-4-6 and claimed its first district title since 1991. The Jaguars, who had a seven-game winning streak and a separate seven-game undefeated streak, won all three District 14-4A tournament games by one-goal margins. Port St. Lucie knocked off South Fork 1-0 in penalty kicks, beat top-seeded Royal Palm Beach 2-1 despite being down a man in the second half and upset Martin County 1-0 in the district championship game. Quotable: “It was an unbelievable year. We had a bunch of seniors and we had high hopes because the goal of the year was to win the district title. That’s what we talked about all year and when we won it, it was unbelievable. That’s something they can own. They actually got a banner for them in the gym with their picture. Words can’t describe how it felt when we won the district title.”

SEBASTIAN — Whenever Sebastian River High School’s boys soccer team played an opponent for the first time, forward Aaron Roberson knew he had only a couple of minutes before they realized what everyone else already knew. Roberson, blessed with outstanding speed and a finishing touch, has been one of the premier scoring threats in the area the past two seasons. The senior scored 20 goals, added six assists, helped Sebastian River go undefeated during the regular season and reach the regional semifinals for the third consecutive season. For his efforts, Roberson has been named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Boys Soccer Player of the Year. “When I saw a team wanted to mark me with one defender or I didn’t hear the other team saying, ‘Mark (No.) 17,’ I knew none of the kids knew my speed until after I blew by them and scored,” Roberson said. “If they put just one person on me, I knew I was going to score. “If it wasn’t just one person marking me and they put two or three people on me, I tried to focus on assists and opening up the field for others to score. It’s somewhat frustrating when you’re the man to mark,

REID MORTELL
Sebastian River High School senior forward Stats: Roberson scored 20 goals and had six assists for 46 points. An all-area selection in 2012, Roberson captained a Sebastian River squad which went undefeated in the regular season and reached the Region 4-4A semifinals. He had hat tricks against Melbourne and Vero Beach and scored twice against Port St. Lucie in the regional quarterfinals. Coach Kurt Bangert: “His athleticism is what sets him apart. One part of it is athleticism and the other part is his dedication to the game of soccer. He is just as good a goalkeeper as he is a field player. He compares to (former Martin County player and 2011 All-Area Player of the Year) Evan Greenbaum in that he can play anywhere on the field.”
but I loved that initial surprise because I had the opportunity to go in and score and get the team off to a good start.” Roberson’s abilities weren’t a secret to most. Despite the added attention from defenses, Roberson had hat tricks against District 13-4A champion Melbourne and District 6-5A runner-up/rival Vero Beach. He even scored a goal while on his back against Delray Beach-American Heritage, a Class 2A Final Four team in 2012. Many teams built their game plans around stopping Roberson and forcing others to carry the offense. Instead of getting frustrated, Roberson expanded his game and willingly accepted being a decoy that opened up the offense.
“He pulled defenders from where they needed to be,” Sebastian River coach Kurt Bangert said. “If he was our whole offense, we weren’t going to score enough, so we worked on that. When I named him captain, I knew it was something he could do because he puts the team before himself.” Roberson always viewed himself as a forward — it’s the position he plays on his club team — but played there sparingly for Sebastian River until this season. “Goals win games and we needed to score,” Roberson said. “I don’t mind midfield, but I really like playing up top. I like finishing — I know what to do and what I can do. I knew we were going to need goals and I was glad I got to score for our team.”
